1SOR® 1500 Series Mechanical Level Switches

Application: Separators Multipleseparatorsareacommonsightinthenaturalgasindustry.Evenwithrawgaswells,thereisalwayscondensate, water, or some other NGL that needs to be separatedpriortotransportingitforprocessing. Thereareanumberofseparationtechnologiesandall of them require collection of these liquids after separation.Somearesimplegravityseparators,somecan be quite elaborate. Regardless of the separation method, SOR 1500s fit the application.

SOR 1500 series mechanical level switches and a generic, horizontal separator process.

Inlet separatorAsrawgasfromthefieldenterslargevesselsintheplantcalled“inletseparators,”condensate(naturalgasoline)andwaterisremovedfromthemaingasstream.AnSOR1510levelswitchismountedinaseparator at, or about, the same elevation as the inlet pipethatbringsincombinationsoffluidssuchasoil,water,gasandcondensate.Ashut-offvalveisinstalledintheinletpipingthatisusuallykeptopenbyairpressure and allows the fluid mix to enter the vessel. Whenliquidreachesthefloatonthe1510,theswitch actuates. Uponactuation,asignalissentto(forexample)asolenoidvalve(sometimesviaaPLC)thatblockstheairnormallyroutedtothevalve.Withtheairsupplycut off, the valve closes and fluid flow to the separator comes to a halt. WhenanSOR1540isused,theairsupplyreachesthe shut-off valve via the pneumatic level switch. When actuated,theairisblockedandtheshut-offvalveclosesbecauseofalackofairsupply. Inbothcases,aseparatelevelcontrollerworksincon-junctionwithadumpvalvethatdrainstheliquidfromthe separator.

Blow case separator Anotherspecificseparatorapplicationwhere1500serieslevelswitchesexceliscontrollingablowcaseseparatorupstream from a compressor. Ablowcaseseparatorisessentiallytwovesselsconnectedvertically.Gasflowsintotheuppervessel(compressor)andgravitypullsliquidsdownintothelowervessel(blowcase).Whentheblowcaseisfull,a1500seriesswitchtripsandclosesavalvebetweenthetwotanks.Asecondvalveopensandallowsthecompressedgasfromabovebackdownintotheblowcase. This forces the accumulated liquids out into the pipeline – downstream from the compressor. Asecond1500seriesswitchisoftenusedasalowleveltoresetthesystemwhentheblowcaseempties.Boththe1510and1540maybeusedwithequaleffec-tiveness;theoneyouchoosedependsonlyontheapplicationandyourpreference.

The 1500s are not restricted to collection tanks. They may also be used to control the level of sour applications and/or “sweetening solutions” with NACE certification.

Glycol dehydratorOften,aglycoldehydratorisnecessaryforremovaloftinywaterdropletsfromnaturalgasifthewaterwasnotcompletelyextractedwiththeseparator.Theprocessinvolves“dehydrating”thenaturalgasandusuallycallsforoneoftwoprocesses:absorption or adsorption.The1500seriesswitchesfallintotheabsorption process. Glycoldehydrationinvolvesputtingglycolincon-tactwithastreamofnaturalgasthatcontainswater.Theglycolabsorbsthewaterfromthewetgasstream,becomesheavierandsinkstothebottomofthecontactorwhereitisexpelled.Thenaturalgasistheneasilyroutedoutofthedehydratorandtheglycol/watersolutionissenttoaspecialboilerthatsteamsawaythewaterallowingtheglycoltoberecycled. AnSOR1500seriesmechanicallevelswitchisinstalledontheinletscrubber/contactor/absorbertomonitorglycol/waterlevels.Whenmountedbelowthewetgasinlet,itpreventstheglycol/waterlevelfrom

risingaboveit.Ifthelevelreachestheswitch,asignalissenttoasolenoidthatworksinconjunctionwith a dump valve which drains the liquid from the scrubber/contactor/absorber.

Flash tank separator-condenserWhenabsorbingwaterfromthewetgasstream,theglycolsolutionwillsometimespickupsmallamountsofmethaneandothercompounds.Flashtankseparatorsdecreasethelossesofthesematerialsbeforetheglycolsolutionreachestheboiler.Theprocessvirtuallyeliminatestheburningandsubsequentventingofthesecloselymonitoredcompounds.SOR1500seriesswitchesareapopularchoicetomonitorflashtanklevelsandtopreventthemfromreachingacriticalpoint.

The original 1500 was born from customer input and SOR continues the tradition by offering a manual check option for the 1510 electric level switch.TheoptionalManualCheckallowstheusertoverifyswitchintegritywithoutremovingthe1510fromthevesselorincreasingordecreasingliquidlevels.Thisisparticularlyusefulforsystemstestinginsafetyapplications,suchasamanualoverride,wheretheswitchisnotcalleduponveryoften.Itmayalsobeusedasamethodtomanuallytriggera valve or activate the normal function the switch. Manycustomersaremandatedbyregulatoryauthoritiestoincludethistypeoffunction.OthersjustliketheaddedfunctionalityandpeaceofmindtheManualCheckprovides.

The1510ManualCheckoptionisactivatedbyturningtheknoblocatedonthesideoftheswitchbody.When the “N” or neutral indicator is oriented towards thepermanently-stampedguidemarker,theunitisinnormaloperatingmode.Turningtheknobclockwiseorcounterclockwise(dependingonwhethertheswitchisperformingahigh-orlow-levelfunction)manuallymovesthefloatandchangestheswitchstate.NOTE:alwaysre-turntheknobtotheneutralpositionbeforeleavingtheswitch.
