ABSTRACT

“From Rugs to Riches Flycatcher Pad”, a homemade agent in lessening those

irritating flies. The Rugs to Riches Flycatcher Pad aims to kill flies using rotten

fruits and vegetables which is eco-friendly, affordable, useful and reliable.

The flycatcher is composed of rotten materials together with the

sticking agent which is made of the honey and sugar solution. The product wasfirst made by mixing all rotten fruits and vegetables. The solution of honey and

sugar were boiled to a casserole. The boiling of sugar and honey made some

bubbles that goes and goes up. The rotten materials were also heated. All

materials were mixed up to make a sticky and smelly product. The mixtures of

all materials were spread out to three sets of pad. Pad A contains 5 ml of

mixture; Pad B contains 10 ml; Pad C contains 15 ml.

The flycatcher pads were hanged out to a place with garbage and

constant flies. Pad A which has the smallest amount of solution attracted 46

flies and stuck 15 flies, Pad B attracted 27 and stuck 12 while Pad C with the

biggest amount of solution attracted the lowest 15 and stuck 3 flies. Attraction

and the sticking of flies were confusing. The testing was again repeated. The

result was the same as the first trial. The pad with the smallest amount of

agents attracted and stuck more flies.

Therefore, it was concluded that the lesser solution, the greater

number of flies would attract and stick. The reason is that the flies are not

attracted with too much honey.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The Aristotle-7 would like to thank and acknowledge the

following in the making of the Rugs to Riches Flycatcher Pad; Ms. Anna

Micah Decio for delivering the materials in making the product.

Damalerio family and Afable family for giving a space in making the

flycatcher. Also for the residence of Brgy. Payatas B, Quezon City for

letting us to test the product. Aristotle would also like to acknowledge

Ms. Michelle Gupit for giving us the right to make a product that is worth

fit to people.

Flies. Irritating flies that comes when we do something like

eating. Those icky flies also cause malaria to people. Those flies must be

lessen. An environment-friendly, reliable, and affordable flycatcher pad

was invented. Flies are one of the common problems in the community

and so that the Aristotle-7 developed the “From Rugs to Riches Flycatcher

Pad” generally aims to catch and stick flies environmentally and

affordably. The flycatcher invented has two major parts; the attracting

agents and the sticking agents. The attracting agents are composed of

the rotten fruits and vegetables. Sticking agents are composed of the

honey and sugar.

“From Rugs to Riches Flycatcher Pad” ingredients could be

found in our homes which is very affordable. The coverage of the testing

was made around the area of Payatas B, Quezon City where those flies

enjoy the garbage.

Hopefully, the said invention would like to reach the goal of

having a clean environment without flies. But even this product was

tested, it needs further investigation.

METHODOLOGY

In the preparation of “From Rugs to Riches Flycatcher Pad”,

honey with an amount of 75 ml. and sugar with 250 g. were mixed with a

5 ml of water then heated in a big-sized casserole. The solution of honey

and sugar made some bubbles that go up as it was heated. The stove was

off and the sticking agent which is the solution of honey and sugar were

cooled down.

The solution was then cooled. Meanwhile, a small casserole

was prepared and the rotten fruits and vegetables such as squash, apple

and banana were mixed. The mixture of the two was added by 7 ml of

water and was heated in the fire. The rotten fruits and vegetables served

as the attracting agent.

The honey-sugar solution was mixed to the rotten fruits and

vegetables thoroughly. A sticky and attractive mixture for the flycatcher

was ready. Three sheets of brown paper with constant sizes were

prepared. The sheets or pads were labeled as ABC. The mixture of the

ingredients was spread out to the three sheets with different amounts.

Pad A contains 5 ml of mixture, Pad B contains 10 ml, and Pad C contains

15 ml respectively.

The sheets or pads were hanged out to a specific place

around the area of Payatas B, Quezon City where flies always hover.

Every two hours, the numbers of flies attracted and stuck to the flycatcher

were recorded faithfully.

Every two hours also, 5 ml of mixture was added and spread out to each

of the sheets constantly. The numbers of flies were also recorded again

truthfully.

THE FINDINGS

After hanging the flycatchers with different amount of solution, the effect of

those to flies were recorded. The smallest amount of solution got the most

number of flies attracted and stuck. It was found out after that flies are not

attracted with too much honey. The effects of the three flycatchers were

presented in a graph.

The evidence at the right side shows

the effect and the result of Pad A to

the flies. The dark spot were the things

and organism stuck at the pad. This

pad stuck 15 flies.

The black dots specified by a red color are the flies caught by the flycatcher.

The yellowish-dark lines were the mixture of attracting and sticking agent.

The pad on the other side is the

Pad B. The pad stuck 44% of the 27

flies it had attracted.

9

The Pad C at the right, attracted 15 flies and

stuck 3 of it. Pad C got the lowest attraction

and sticking of flies of all the three pads.

Therefore, it was concluded that the less amount of

honey, the more effective the product is .

11

The Recommendations

In the near future, the product would be more effective as more idea and

knowledge will be suggested by the people. This product will surely help

you in lessening those irritating flies. All people who like to add some

agents to make this product more effective, have a right to do what they

like to improve in this product. This flycatcher is “a reliable, environment-

friendly, reliable, and affordable flycatcher of the community”.
