8 Week Categories
Based on EPA Food Waste Hierarchy
The tiers to the hierarchy are:• Source Reduction• Feed Hungry People• Feed Animals• Industrial Uses (i.e. used for biofuel)• Composting
Food Waste
Earn up to 5 points for waste minimization activities.For example:• Reusable to-go containers• Back-of-house waste measurement system• Front-of-house food waste awareness campaign
Once the competition has begun, schools must submit weeklyweights:• Food donated to people• Food fed to animals• Food used as biofuels• Food and/or compostable service ware composted
Food recovery actions that are higher up on the EPA’s Food Waste Recovery Hierarchy receive a higher score. Ex: 100 lbs of food that is donated to people will receive more points than 100 lbs of food that is composted.
