North American School Rubik’s® Cube

Championship April 28-29, 2018

Rules & Eligibility Eligibility:

1. Open to students enrolled in a K-12 school or homeschool program in North America, age 8 through 17.

2. Limited to competitors who can solve a 3x3 Rubik’s Cube in 2:00 (2 minutes) or less. 3. Competitors will compete in one of three divisions based on the grade level they are

enrolled in at school during the 2017-2018 school year. a. K-5th grade: Division 1 (Minimum age 8) b. 6th-8th grade: Division 2 c. 9th-12th grade: Division 3 (Maximum age 17)

Registration:

1. Each competitor must be enrolled via the online registration form and paid in full by the deadline of APRIL 15, 2018. www.HasbroGamingChampionships.com

2. There is a $50 fee for registration. 3. Competition is limited to 200 competitors total.

General Rules:

1. The competition will have four rounds to determine six finalists for each of the three divisions. A final round of three consecutive solves will determine the North American School Rubik’s Cube Champion for each division.

2. The competition should be a positive experience and all competitors, teachers, and parents are expected to conduct themselves in a manner considerate of others at all times during the competition. We reserve the right to remove any competitor or audience member who is not acting in a positive, sportsmanlike manner.

3. No items whatsoever are allowed on the competition table(s) at any time including Solution Guides, notes, cell phones, or any other electronic equipment.

4. The Head Judge will make final decisions. 3x3 Rubik’s Cubes:

1. Only 3x3 Rubik’s® brand cubes with the following logos will be allowed at this event:

2. Competitors must bring and use their own 3x3 Rubik’s Cube(s). 3. Cubes must be in reasonable working order. 4. Lubricating and/or sanding cubes is acceptable to make the cubes twist smoothly. 5. If a competitor’s Rubik’s Cube encounters a defect during a solving attempt(e.g., popped

parts, twisted pieces, or detached tiles), the competitor may choose to repair the defect and continue the solve while the timer is still running, or to stop the solve and take a score of DNF.

a. If a competitor chooses to repair the cube, they must repair only the defective parts, no tools may be used, and any repair made cannot give the competitor any advantage in solving.

Competition Procedure:

1. Competitors must be ready to submit their cube for scrambling when requested. 2. Competitors’ Rubik’s Cubes must be fully solved when submitted for scrambling. 3. Scramblers will apply a computer-generated random scrambling sequence to the Rubik’s

Cubes. The same sequence will be used for all cubes in a heat, but a different sequence will be used for each heat.

a. Scrambling sequences will not be available to competitors before or during the competition.

4. Cubes will be given back to competitors at the time of their solve. 5. Competitors will have 15 seconds to view/handle the cube before starting their solve. No

moves or adjustments may be made to the cube at this time. The table judge will use a stopwatch to monitor the 15 second time period.

6. At the end of the review period, the judge will prompt the competitor to begin their solve. At this time the competitor must put down the cube and place their hands on the timer.

7. The competitor will then immediately begin the solve by removing their hands from the timer.

8. At the end of the solve, the competitor will stop the timer. Once the time has stopped, the competitor may not touch the cube until the time is recorded on the scorecard.

9. The table judge will check the cube and note any penalties, see below, if the Rubik’s Cube is not in the solved state.

10. The table judge will complete the scorecard and the competitor will verify the time is correct by signing the scorecard. Any disputes regarding the time/penalties should be brought to the attention of the Head Judge before leaving the table.

Solved State:

1. The solved state is when each of the six sides of the cube have one solid color per side. 2. A cube is considered solved if two adjacent sides are aligned (less than 45 degrees

discrepancy) and less than a 45 degree move is required to align the third (see photo examples).

3. If one move is required of more than 45 degrees to align the sides there is a 2 second penalty.

4. If more than one move is required, the cube is considered not solved. 5. See examples:

Scoring:

1. Each competitor will have 4 attempts to solve, which will occur during 4 different rounds over the course of Saturday and Sunday.

2. For determining the 6 competitors from each division for the final round, each competitor’s worst heat time will be removed, and the arithmetic mean (average) of the 3 remaining times will determine the competitor’s ranking.

a. If an attempt is unfinished or the competitor is otherwise disqualified during a heat, a score of DNF (did not finish) will be recorded for that heat.

b. If a competitor is not present during their scheduled heat or is otherwise not able to compete, a score of DNS (did not start) will be recorded for that heat.

c. For calculating the times to determine competitor rankings, DNF and DNS are the worst possible results.

d. If a competitor has more than one DNF/DNS score, it will be counted as 2:01.000 for the purpose of averaging the remaining scores, after dropping one of the DNF/DNS scores.

3. In the event of tie of average times, ranking will be determined by the affected competitors’ best solve times.

4. The top 6 competitors in each division, as determined by ranking after the 4th round of solving, will compete in a Championship round.

5. In the Championship round, the top 6 competitors in each division will have 3 consecutive attempts each to solve. The final ranking will be determined by the arithmetic mean (average) of the three solves.

a. If a competitor has a DNF and/or DNS score, as previously described, a time of 2:01.000 will be counted for each DNF/DNS in their final 3 solves.

Awards:

1. Competitors must attend the winner’s ceremony to be eligible for awards, which will be held on Sunday afternoon, April 29th.

2. All participants will receive a certificate of participation. 3. If there are a minimum of 50 competitors in their division, the 1st place winner in the

division will receive a prize of $5000. 4. Winners should be prepared to talk to any media professionals covering the event.
