It’s not too early to start thinking about and planning your shopping for the holiday sea-

son. We all have those friends and family members who are a challenge to shop for or are

among the growing number of people that prefer that you honor them by helping others.

The Rumple Missions Committee invites you to join us for our second Alternative Gift Fair

on Sunday, November 8 from noon until 2pm. The event will be held in conjunction with

the Second Sunday lunch. Our “gift” opportunities will benefit the Community Care Clin-

ic, the Hunger and Health Coalition, WeCAN, and Wine to Water. We will also have Norma

Suddreth’s beautiful Rumple cards for sale.

We hope to see you at the event. Even if you don’t have any shopping, it is a wonderful

opportunity to learn about each of these agencies and how you, as an individual or a

member of Rumple, can be a part of their efforts in our community and around the world.

A Challenge from your DCE Many people say contemporary Christians are “biblically” illiterate. While this

is not true of all individuals there is a trend in this direction. The Bible is the basis of our faith. As God’s written Word for us, it communicates the knowledge of Christ and God’s will for our lives.

Do you wish you knew more of the Bible but are unsure of where to start?

Does the idea of a year long Bible study with meetings and classes not fit your schedule? Do you travel or maybe live away from Blowing Rock part of the year? Are you looking for ways to grow spiritually? Join with me in 2016 for

The Year of the Bible.

This is a program of daily reading you can do in your home individually or with your family. Scriptures are suggested for each day of the year, so all of Rumple is reading the same verses. Can you imagine what God could do with all of us

in unity in this simple yet powerful event?

Advent Workshop – Sunday November 29, 5:30 p.m.

All are invited to our Second Advent Workshop on the first Sunday in Advent. We will be making individual Advent wreaths for our homes or to give to a friend and

we will also enjoy a Stone Soup Supper. Cost is $6.00 / wreath and RSVP is needed so we order enough candles. You are asked to bring an item for our Stone Soup. Sugges-

tions include, canned vegetables, potatoes, beans…any item you would like in a vegetable soup. Also, those who have greenery or holly berries in their yards

are asked to bring clippings to decorate the wreaths.

Need a Babysitter? In September Rumple hosted an American Red Cross Babysitting Certification

Course. 17 students from the Blowing Rock Community participated in the eight-hour course and 15 completed the class and are now certified babysit-

Grief Support If you are interested in being a part of a small group that will offer support during a

time of grieving and loss please contact Natasha Schoonover by email

Natasha Schoonover will begin a new Sunday School class November 1st that will

meet in the fellowship hall. Though we will begin at 9:45 we welcome “latecomers”

and “part timers” with open arms. This class will study the Old Testament beginning

with Genesis and work through the bible to the New Testament. We will strive to

make this a casual and safe space to study and read scripture; a place that wel-

comes and encourages all questions. This is a discussion-based class that acknowl-

edges the value of diversity as a necessary component for healthy Christian growth.

Participants of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged and needed for fruitful dis-

cussion and growth.

FALL MEETING OF SALEM PRESBYTERY

Salem Presbytery will meet on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at Clemmons Presbyteri-an Church. The meeting will begin promptly at 9:00 am with worship and celebra-

tion of the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper. The packet, which includes the Docket and Committee reports may be found online at salempresbytery.org - Read and be

aware of the work of Salem Presbytery.

Pastor Charlie and Alice Salthouse, commissioner, will attend this meeting of Salem Presbytery.

Rumple is excited to announce that a new ministry called “The Gathering”

will meet Friday November 13th from 7pm to 8pm at the Town Tavern. Childcare

will be provided at Rumple Presbyterian church for those who may need it. This is

a unique opportunity for Rumple members to meet for fellowship and bible study

outside the walls of the church. Facilitated by Joan and Robert Shirley, this study

aims to be a place that “church” happens out in the community and welcomes

those in the community who may be uncomfortable in a church environment. The

gathering is open to anyone so come as you are, bring your bibles and join “The

Gathering”

Circle News and Meetings

Circle I will meet Monday, November 2 at 6:00 in the Rumple House.

Circle II will meet Tuesday, November 17 at 2:00 at the home of Mary Lentz.

Circle III meets May through October and will return next spring.

Circle IV will meet Monday, November 9 at 1:00 at the Rumple House with our hostess

Bonnie Ewing. Our program leader is Janet Stout and we will study Chapter 12 in Strong

Was Her Faith: Women of the New Testament.

Circle V will meet Wednesday, November 4 at 9:30 in the Rumple House. All ladies are

invited even if you do not have a circle. If you have any questions, please call Linda

Mauldin at 295-3327.

Calling all cooks! Our freezer is empty. Please help us provide casseroles and soups for those who have been ill or hospitalized. You can place your labeled

items, including any directions for cooking or reheating, in the freezer in the back

of the Fellowship Hall. Thank you.

Please remember Blowing Rock Cares Food Pantry. Canned meats, peanut

butter, toothpaste and toiletry items are always needed.

Look for the grocery cart located inside the back door on Sundays and

place your donations there.

The members of Rumple have been especially generous for

many years in helping provide Christmas cheer to those chil-dren and families who are in special need of our love and

care. The Angel Tree with the names, ages, and clothing sizes of children needing our help will be displayed in the church

lobby beginning on Sunday, November 22. We hope you will choose an angel, purchase and wrap gifts, and return the gifts to the upstairs classroom #4, (Grades 3 and 4) by

Wednesday, December 9 so that they can be distributed to families. You will also have the opportunity to buy a food/

grocery gift card for a family. Please be sure to sign your name and phone number on the clipboards beside the name

and number of the child and/or family you choose.

Elderberry Tree 2015

The Elderberry Tree was started in 2011 to address the needs of the elderly in our com-

munity during the holiday season. It started with just a few elderly but has grown and

the Elderberry Tree hopes to help 30 individuals during this Christmas Season.

Salt Shakers—Lunch Bunch Sign-up

Do you enjoy good food, meeting new friends, and wonderful fellowship? If so you will

want to sign up for winter “Salt Shakers”. You will start by filling out the form that will be in the pew pads during the month of November and first two weeks in December.

You may choose between the “Lunch Bunch” and the “Dinner Group”. The “Lunch Bunch” meets at noon in various restaurants each month and the “Dinner Group” meets in the evening on the weekends or Sunday brunch in homes each month. There was a

large summer Lunch Bunch that enjoyed fellowship at area restaurants. There have been inquiries about Winter Lunch Bunch so please join us. If you will not be at church

on these Sundays please call Ellen Gregory 263-0610 so you will be included on a list.

Summer Salt Shaker Groups Update.

There were four Salt Shaker dinner groups. I hear lots of positive feed back from indi-

viduals in the groups. I think it is important to let our church family know what a vital and

important ministry this activity is to our church. I would like to share reports from the

groups.

Group 1 – Leader – Ellen and Max Gregory – The first meeting was at our home

with chicken on the grill with appetizers on the deck. Next, George and Mary Ann Bishop,

new attendees in our church, had a gourmet dinner prepared by her daughter and son-in-law.

Kitty and Bill Taylor inspired us with a dinner with a Latin flair, Karen and Jim Clabough

with Cajun chicken and accompanying dishes, and Donna and Fred Whitt with Mediterranean

chicken. So you can see our delicious entrees were very diverse representing other cultures.

Incidentally, all of our members have Tennessee ties except Don Saunders. Don said I rigged

it, but I plead innocent. Anyway, we enjoyed the Tennessee- Florida game at the Clabough’s

home until the last play of the game when Florida scored a touchdown.

Group 2 – Leader - Mabel Davis – Our group enjoyed good fellowship and wonderful

food. Everyone was very congenial and very gracious. The attendance was good. One of the

best times was at the Thorn’s home. Bill played the piano after dinner and we sang favorite

hymns. Pastor Charlie was with us and after enough hymns; he requested some “good old

rock and roll”. We ended our summer Salt Shakers with a foot-tapping time.

Group 3 – Leaders – Jean and Dave Baskin – David and I were the host couple for

our 2015 summer Salt Shakers. We had a great group with 12 in all. We had such fun catch-

ing up on everyone’s winter activities. Weddings, births, graduations, children and grandchil-

dren, and of course, how each of us were doing health wise were shared.

New menus were tried from hot dogs and hamburgers to formal dining. Old friendships

were renewed and new friendships formed.

And to top the year off, in November David and I will host one last dinner and prepare a

Brunswick stew dinner with all the fixings. Members of our group are asked to bring food

items to share with the Rumple Food Pantry.

David and I have been involved in Salt Shakers for 20 years. The first time we visited

Rumple we were told “You must join Salt Shakers” and we did. A wonderful ministry! If you

have not experienced it; you must.

Group 4 – Leaders – Drew and Vernon Dunn - A member in this group said, “This

is the best group we have ever been in”. This group took a casual route and used paper plates

and everyone was pleased. Adrienne and Dick Washer initiated a worthy project for their

group. At their last dinner they prepared the food for the dinner. They asked members to

bring canned and boxed foods for Blowing Rock C.A.R.E.S. They collected a large amount of

food to contribute.

Hope you have enjoyed the news from Salt Shakers. We encourage you to consider be-

An update from…

It’s nearly November and the PNC (Pastor Nominating Committee) has been working

diligently with the Mission Study Team (MST) to complete the Mission Study. This will

be available for prospective pastors to review and learn more about our church. The 25

plus page document has been submitted to Session for their initial review and for re-

view by our church committees for completeness. This thorough study, and church

snapshot, has allowed us to begin completing the Ministry Information Form (MIF)

which we hope to post on the PCUSA website in January. At this point we will be

matched with pastors desiring a call and we will also receive Pastor’s Information

Forms (PIF) from others who find us to be a good fit for them. Then, the work really be-

gins. We will review an anticipated 100 PIFs and begin to narrow our search to a small-

er group. We will visit churches, conduct phone interviews, Skype others, hear ser-

mons in a neutral church, and interview face-to-face. Please pray for our Committee

that we will discern the person whom God has selected just for us. It is our desire to

call a Pastor who will embrace us all, nurture our faith, and lead us well into the fu-

ture.

Session Digest – October 2015

At the October 26 Stated Meeting of the Session, your ruling elders, in addition to regu-

lar monthly committee items:

- Opened with a devotion by Bill Thorn. He discussed the importance of music in wor-ship and highlighted a few well-loved hymns, like "Just As I Am" and "Take My Life and Let It Be." He included the background stories of both hymns from the book Songs in the

Night. He closed with prayer; - Approved minutes of the September Stated Session meeting and the October 4 Congre-gational meeting;

- Heard an update from sessional subcommittee working on committee structure for 2016;

- Heard a report from the Teaching Elder on activities for the prior month and approved vacation time for Charlie February 1-17; - Heard a report from DCE Cameron Womack regarding participation in the Hallelujah

Festival and Wednesday afternoon activities - both having 20 youth participants; the pic-torial directories which should arrive mid-November; work with the Christian Education

Committee to plan a challenge to the congregation to read the Bible in a year with guid-ance and follow-up throughout - the motion was made, seconded and unanimously ap-proved to support this effort; efforts by Natasha Schoonover to plan and lead a Sunday

School class on how to read the Bible, to lead a grief counseling group, and to explore a the possibility of dinner meetings at restaurants for faith based discussion; - Heard a report from the Properties Committee on recent efforts to address the skunk

smell in Rumple House, elevator repair work and the addition of a communication device to the elevator, and consolidating all communication systems in the church with one

vendor and one bill; - Approved a motion to apply to Salem Presbytery for a Relief of Conscience (Charlie will share information with congregation on this);

- Received information from Salem Presbytery on use of church and presbytery funds; - Received a draft of the first section of the PNC Mission Study document for sugges-tions;

- Approved Alice Salthouse as commissioner to the Salem Presbytery meeting on Novem-ber 7;

- Selected Jim Ruff to accompany Charlie to serve home communion to members on No-vember 1; -Shared Congregational concerns;
