Economic Impact of withdrawal of SPC Ardmona from Greater Shepparton
Woolworths deal supports SPC Ardmona and Aussie growers
“Woolworths is proud to support fruit growers from the Goulburn Valley in Victoria with a $70M deal for Woolworths Select canned apricots, peaches, apples and pears. This will move supply from overseas and bring it home to SPC Ardmona in Shepparton”. The company said the agreement to supply local fruit, tomatoes and beans was recognition that "consumers really do care where their food comes from".
Woolworths are also sourcing three canned pineapple products from Queensland. These products replace Select canned fruit lines that were previously imported from South Africa and Thailand.
Shepparton council cans Andrew Fairley Avenue closure plans
“SPC Ardmona's $100 million upgrade of its Shepparton headquarters is on hold after its request to close a street that cuts the plant in two was rejected on Tuesday 10th June.”
'The decision by the Greater Shepparton Council not to grant SPC the ability to consolidate on one site, to make crucial efficiency improvements, is extremely disappointing,' the company said on Wednesday.
Shepparton mayor Jenny Houlihan, who voted to close the road, said it was disappointing that SPC was being forced to 'go back to the drawing board‘… 'We're all up in the air ... as to what it means for SPC and 2000 jobs in our community.
Modelling showed the road closure would have little to no impact on most road users.
Minister’s Task Force comes to Shepparton
The Agricultural Competitiveness White Paper task force visited Shepparton on the 9th April to discuss the proposed White Paper with 15 local Shepparton farmers. The Minister released the issues paper in February this year was seeking public comment. “Farming is the backbone of our region. We have a large range of different farms, from dairy farms, to orchards, sheep stations to crop farms, we have the lot…”

No budget fund for Shepparton Rail
• A $172 million investment in new rolling stock will not improve Shepparton’s much-criticised train services.
• The funding for new carriages will cover an existing gap in the $4.3billion Regional Rail Link, which excludes the Seymour and Shepparton lines.
• Shepparton RAILS had hoped some Goulburn Valley train service improvements would be included in May’s Victorian Budget, expecting it to at least implement a timetable review to allow for a Shepparton train to arrive in Melbourne before 9am.
‘‘All we can do is keep campaigning because our rail services will remain insufficient until the government spends money to improve them’’
Pental is the largest manufacturer of soap in Australia. For decades it has operated out of Shepparton.
Shepparton to get new $73 million courthouse
The new court complex will replace ageing and degraded facilities housing the present Magistrates’ Court and sittings of the Supreme Court and County Court.
Some 150 jobs will be created during construction and there will be 14 more permanent jobs once the complex is complete.
Proposed design for the new Shepparton courthouse.
