Wild Side Charitable Trust (WST) has just purchased the Arapohue Bush Camp—22 acres of land with buildings and native bush, located 16km south east of Dargaville, and 58km west of Whangarei. WST now needs to repair, restore or replace some of the buildings and establish a residential sanctuary for those who need rest and respite.

The most urgent need now is to employ part-time and project based builders to oversee the initial property development plan (see Appendix 2).

A holistic respite retreat where issues of the mind, body, spirit and whanau are addressed (te whare tapa whā) is urgently needed to help the addicted and broken in Aotearoa. This approach brings healing to not only the guest, but also to the wider family (whanau).

This is a big vision and we need initial funding partnership from those who can see the urgent need for this facility in Northland while we get up and running and become self-funding.

Would you want a safe haven for your son or daughter, niece or nephew if they were struggling with life issues?

A Northland psychiatrist recently said that the latest governmental

inquiry report into mental health and addiction services in NZ can be summarised as saying,

“The New Zealand health system sucks at holistic healing.” See Needs Analysis here

There are not enough support systems; and even

the way the support is delivered, needs looking at.

Arapohue Rural Retreat will be a faith-based community where the lost, the broken and the lonely find hope, healing and love.

You’re invited to help us restore the accommodation and create gardens and facilities for the equine mentoring programme in this new haven, for those needing rest and respite.

WST believes dysfunctional life-controlling issues are primarily driven by pain and trauma, in many cases, by cycles of generational dysfunction and poverty. Our programme will deal with healing these root causes (including shame and rejection), working towards family restoration, plus learning work and life skills.

Healing Horses: We intend to develop an equine mentoring programme where at-risk youth (rangitahi) are welcome to participate in a programme designed to build up their confidence and self-worth by engaging with healing horses and ponies. See Appendix 3.

Work Skills: Arapohue guests will get back into a work routine by making woodwork and cottage industry products. Any products made and sold will help to top up their residential cost shortfall as we work towards developing a self-funding model. Residents can also help make walking tracks through the native bush and cultivate the veggie gardens.

Weekend Huis: We envisage running weekend huis for the unemployed and young people (rangatahi) to teach work skills and encourage them to get connected with employers or study / training pathways.

Arapohue Rustics: Arapohue Rural Retreat will cater primarily for guests who can learn woodworking skills by producing a range of rustic timber products for the facility and for sale. These may include rustic cabins, outdoor furniture, bird boxes, children’s toys and gift boxes (crates) for a cottage industry gift box range. We aim to teach gardening, sustainable living practices and permaculture—and to train young people to prepare them for work in the forestry industry.

Arapohue Cottage: We plan to develop a cottage industry with a range of produce and products so guests can learn new skills. Eg. producing a range of food and sewn goods, eg. jams, honey, chutneys, fruit preserves, infused oils, ginger beer, fudge, tea towels, tablecloths, pillows, greeting cards, flax woven items, rongoa healing balms etc.

The work programme will run concurrently with the healing and recovery programmes.

WST has a wide, faith-based worldview, and cares for people of every faith, creed and race.

HOW WE ARE DIFFERENT

Unlike commercially driven providers, we are not-for-profit, and therefore intend to work with many other agencies such as Te Ara Oranga, Te Hā Oranga, Timatanga Hou (Dargaville detox), NDHB, and the Salvation Army... because TOGETHER, WE HAVE THE ANSWERS.

There will be a major emphasis on learning work skills, work ethic and general life recovery. Many people have lived their entire lives outside of normal society and need intensive help learning how to write a CV, get a driver’s licence, insurance, car, bank account etc.

WST recognises Māori

philosophy towards health (te whare tapa whā); based on a holistic health model seeing health as a four-sided concept

representing four basic beliefs of life:

Te Taha Hinengaro (mental health), Te Taha Tinana

(physical health), Te Taha Whānau (family health)

and Te Taha Wairua (spiritual health).

GOVERNANCEWild Side Charitable Trust has a solid governance structure which includes an experienced advisory council and board of trustees. See here

WST are employing a qualified mental health management team to supervise and run the respite and recovery programmes.

We do not seek to be in conflict with any medical or psychiatric practices, any church or its religious doctrines, beliefs or practices. Our programmes will work hand-in-hand with any

prescribed medicine or psychological treatment; we will be working closely with the Dargaville Mental Health team and the Dargaville Medical Centre for advice or

treatment of specific medical conditions or disorders.

F U N D I N G N E E D S : P R I O R I T Y P R O J E C T SUntil Arapohue Rural Retreat is up and running and accepting paying “guests” and equine mentoring clients and is self-funding, we need your (tax deductible) donation or grant NOW, to kick-start the restoration and renovations.

2. The Cottage will be the first building for wahine (women) needing respite accommodation. It needs a repaint, insulation and furnishings. Will you contribute towards the Cottage restoration which will be at least $10,000? (eg. 20 people contributing $500 each, or maybe you can contribute a smaller amount on a monthly basis?)

3. We need to employ part-time and project-based builders and handymen (and volunteers) to do cabin maintenance, excavation work, develop the veggie gardens and orchard, build walking tracks through the 8.7ha of native bush, and 101 other projects! Would you contribute toward the first six months of this work starting at $20,000? (eg. 20 people contributing $1,000 each, or maybe you can contribute a smaller amount on a monthly basis?)

4. We need to purchase seaweed (natural) fertiliser for the grazing paddocks plus construction of the facilities needed to set up the Equine Mentoring Programme. Will you help? $10,000 required in the first 12 months (Appendix 3) (eg. 20 people contributing $500, or maybe you can contribute a smaller amount on a monthly basis?)

1. The Centre Directors’ accommodation requires urgent roof repairs and has plumbing issues. The home’s structure is sound, but it’s old and needs immediate repairs. Will you contribute towards the repair costs which start at $10,000? (eg. 20 people contributing $500 each, or maybe you can contribute a smaller amount on a monthly basis?)

1 GIVEALITTLE: Arapohue Rural Retreat - a place of rest and respite

Please tick one of the following:

[ ] Please use my donation/grant to further the work of the WST developing up the Arapohue Rural Retreat helping those in need throughout Aotearoa.

[ ] Please send me a tax receipt at the end of the financial year.

If you wish to receive a tax receipt, please complete the form on the next page—scan this page and the next—and email to [email protected] or post to Ray Curle, Wild Side Charitable Trust, PO Box 33, Ruawai 0549.

1. Corporate Donors / Angel Donors We are looking for major funding organisations, corporate entities and generous philanthropists

to consider making substantial donations to see this much-needed respite/retreat centre up-and-running. There are major capital injections required initially for the rebuilding/restoration/replacement of the existing facilities, however, once we are up-and-running, our model incorporates drawing income from the guests working for themselves, their families and the Retreat, so that we are not reliant upon donations / grants down the track. See the WST 3 Year Forecast, Appendix 1.

WST Chairman, Ray Curle, and Treasurer, Gary Shuttleworth of Shuttleworth Chartered Accountants are happy to discuss any queries you may have.

Bank details over page. Please contact: Ray p. 09 4392 713 or 027 254 6778, [email protected] Gary p. 021 2265441, [email protected]

2. Individual Donors (one-off donations) Please complete the form overleaf, scan and email to [email protected] OR go to our

Givealittle page.1

3. Individual Donors (regular contributors) to the ongoing costs of caring for guests and their families. There will always be ongoing costs of caring for guests (outside of the corporate funding) including the need for gifts of food, clothes and other items for the families. Northland is a VERY high-need area, and our model seeks to take into account how we can care for the guest’s spouse or partner and children.

If you would like to set up a regular monthly automatic payment (or a one-off donation), please complete the form overleaf.

Vania Lamont, proposed Equine Mentoring Manager:My desire to mentor alongside community stems from the mandate in Micah 6v8, “He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” My equine mentor practice will be influenced by my core personal values. The family is important. “Value human relationships and work to promote, restore and maintain the wellbeing of individuals and communities.” (Connolly, 2009. p55).I have a Certificate in General Animal Science and credits from 2yrs Social Work Degree. From experience working with people and horses, I have found that the positive effects of equine mentoring teaches responsiblility, aids personal growth by mirroring behaviour, builds relational confidence, establishes understanding of cause and effect, and encourages communication, love, respect and acceptance. Initially I want to introduce a similar programme to that has been developed by other organisations which helps young people through difficult times in their lives and has also proved to be an effective intevention for high-risk students experiencing suicidal ideation or other risk-taking behaviours. Families needing to improve their relationships would also benefit from this program. The benefits of this programme can be introduced to our respite guests as part of their healing journey.

I will be providing: Five horses, all gear and tack for all ponies and horses, fencing standards and tape, solar power electric fence unit, harness and cart, horse float, current mineral and hay stock on hand.

LETTER OF SUPPORT

This letter of support is intended for the purpose of giving tautoko to the Rehabilitation Centre application by Ray and Janet Curle. I have known Janet all of her life and also am aware of the excellent work her and her husband have been involved in over the years, supporting people into recovery and offering advice and support to those in need.

Janet and Ray are well known and respected community members. I wish them well in this venture as this is a facility with a difference and unfortunately these types of facilities are required within communities today. The location is perfect, situated amongst the ngahere and within the Kaipara and rohe of Te Uri o Hau / Te Roroa, offering a perfect setting to recuperate and restore ones wairua.

Thank you Janet and Ray for the vision of restoring ones mana.

Letter of endorsement - Wild Side Charitable Trust for the Arapohue Healing & Recovery

Centre

I welcome the enterprise of our Kaipara people, especially when they’re endeavouring to enhance the

well-being of Kiwis.

The Wild Side Charitable Trust aims to do this by supporting people through their addiction to be well,

live well, and contribute back to society.

To fulfil their vision the Wild Side Charitable Trust needs to purchase and establish a residential

rehabilitation centre on a designated 22 acre site near Dargaville, calling it the Arapohue Healing &

Recovery Centre. This is a long term project which requires funding to begin.

I have personally know Janet Curle all my life, growing up in the Dargaville area. It’s lovely that Janet

has chosen to come back with this venture to the Kaipara district.

Our Council’s vision is ‘thriving communities working together’ and I feel the Wild Side Charitable Trust

will contribute greatly to this, will enrich whanaungatanga, and will strengthen our Kaipara mana.

Yours faithfully

Dr Jason Smith

Mayor

To Whom It May Concern,

Re: Proposed healing and recovery centre in Arapohue

I would like to express my support for Wild Side Charitable Trust and their vision for a residential healing and recovery centre in Northland.

It is the kind of project that addresses what I see as a deep need among Northland communities. The human suffering of drug and alcohol abuse is significant, and also has a social and economic impact across our region.

I applaud Wild Side Charitable Trust’s effort to help those suffering from the effects of addiction and I am impressed by the Trust’s plan, which includes purchasing the land at the old Arapohue Bush Camp near Dargaville, restoring or replacing the camp buildings, and establishing a centre for the recovery of people struggling with addiction and related issues.

They have my full support in whatever applications for funding and assistance they make.

Yours sincerely
