The Importance of Reading and Writing
Reading and writing are life-long skills and essential to success in
real life. The support you give your child in reading and writing at
home is critical to his or her growth during the school year. Don’t
depend on school alone to be your child’s only teacher. You will
always be their first and most influential teacher.
Here are some things you can do to promote reading and writing
skills at home.
1. Read to your child daily.
2. Ask questions about the stories you are reading together.
3. Answer some of your child’s questions in a letter or a note.
4. Introduce your child to the public library with his or her own
library card.
5. Notice when your child is reading or writing for enjoyment
and offer encouragement and praise.
6. Give your child time to tell you stories.
7. Read and write yourself. The strongest teaching is through
modeling.
8. Give books as gifts.
9. Nurture an interest in writing by providing novelty paper,
notebooks, pens, pencils and markers to use at home.
10. Ask them to read their stories to you.
11. Send stories they have written to grandparents, aunts and un-
cles.
12. Secure a quiet spot in the house for regular reading and writ-
ing activities.
Your children will thank you; not only for the learning, but for the
time they get to spend with you.

We have been encouraging fitness at school while practic-ing for the physical fitness tests. We hope students are trying to maintain or even improve their fitness scores from last year. First graders are learning the joy of fitness! As of Fall 2011 fitness scores ARE a part of your child’s Phy Ed grade, students are required to participate and encour-aged to do their personal best. As in the past, the fitness testing results will be included with the report card in De-cember. Students will be graded in the following fitness areas: Curl-Ups, Push-Ups, Sit & Reach, Pacer Endurance Run (1-4
th Graders) or Mile Run (5
th and 6
th Graders).

HEALTH NOTES:
Brrr… it’s getting cold outside!!!
It is getting cold and winter weather will soon be upon us. Please listen to the weather reports and send
your children properly dressed for the elements. Students go out for recess daily unless the temperature
or wind chill is minus five degrees or lower. The health office no longer provides outdoor clothing. An
extra pair of socks and mittens to be kept in student lockers may be helpful. The lost and found is al-
ready growing; please label your child’s belongings
If you are unable to provide outdoor clothing due to finances please contact the school social worker for resources.

Many Volunteers were busy making a difference at Rush Creek in October!
Hats Off! to our PTO Board members and Fundraising Chairs, who have all been
busy coordinating the fundraising efforts for our school. A HUGE THANK YOU goes
out them for the time and efforts they put into raising funds for our school. And,
thank you to all the families who have supported these events. Without your efforts,
our students would not enjoy many of the extra programs PTO has to offer.
Although the weather didn’t cooperate well, our volunteers were here to keep the All-School BBQ
on track. Thanks for making it a special day for our students. And, parents were a huge help in
keeping picture day and vision/hearing testing moving smoothly this month. We could not have
done this so well without you!
We have received a tremendous amount of support from awesome parent volunteers who have
agreed to support our teachers and students throughout the school year. These parents are
helping with prep teams, reading groups, classroom monitoring, and much more!
The Staff truly appreciates all that our volunteers do for our school.
Thank you!
For information on how you can become more involved at school, please contact the

Where in the World is Rocky Raccoon?
Welcome back to another year of traveling with the Rush Creek mascot, Rocky Rac-coon! During the month of October, Rocky traveled over the Atlantic Ocean to the coun-try of Sweden. Students had all month to read the clues, do research and submit their an-swer. We had so many correct guesses this month - congratulations to all you students that guessed right and learned a little something about the beautiful country of Swe-den! The winners of a $5 Barnes and Noble gift card are:
1st - Jack Roach - Mrs. McBride
2nd - Alex Koshiol - Mrs. Williams
3rd - Yousef Mahayni - Mrs. Hritzko
4th - Sydney Hockett - Mrs. Prin
5th - Jacob Valerius - Mrs. Potvin
6th - Lydia Willaert - Mrs. Albrecht
Way to go Rush Creek students! Check out the map and clues in the media center during November to find out where Rocky is traveling to next!

Rush Creek Media News
September and October were eventful months in media. Students and staff were busy checking out books.
We have about 1000 students. In two months they checked out a total of 18,998 books. Because it’s
easier for students to find books if they are on the shelves, and our staff alone can-
not keep up with the demand of putting books back on the shelves, we are in des-
perate need of volunteers! As a perk, volunteers are able to check out books. If you
can help, even for an hour a week, please contact our volunteer coordinator Marla
Kryzer at [email protected].
Thank you to all the volunteers who have been helping us so far this year!
Your child may have mentioned that his/her name tag is also his or her library card.
Please be sure if your child wears it home to return it to school the next day. If it is lost or damaged there is
a small fee to have a new one made.
If a library book is damaged or lost please tell the media center staff right away. We will assess the dam-
age and if a replacement fine is needed, we will send a note home. We collect these fines to replace books
with library bound copies which hold up much better than items purchased at local retailers.
We will continue to be e-mailing overdue book notices to parents. If you do not have an e-mail address
your child will receive a paper copy reminder.
This year I’ve made a goal to read a book each day during the week. I post the book
title, tell if it is a picture book or chapter book and then tell a short blurb about the con-
tents on Twitter. You are welcome to follow those titles. You do not need a twitter
account to read it. You can simply do an internet search for “ohlgrend twitter” or visit
https://twitter.com/ohlgrend and it will show you my posts.
I’m looking forward to another fantastic year. Your child is welcome to get books here every day. My
motto is “Every day is Library Day.”
