El abutilón recién plantado, lasbuganvillas y las plantas engrandes macetones.

“Cada año somos más vecindones”, bromea José María Ruiz sobre la peculiar relación de los residentes,que viven este patio con el mismo espíritu de aquellas casas de vecinos de antaño. Aquel jazmín especta-cular con ramas de 20 metros se ha perdido, hay más especies veteranas y de color y se ha plantado unabutilón para mirar al futuro. Un sello del patio son sus guiños culturales y la exposición de la entrada.

Every year we become better neighbours“Every year we become better neighbours,“ José Mª Ruiz jokingly remarks about the rela-

tionship between the residents who enjoy this patio in the same spirit as their ancestorsdid. The 20 metre high jasmine bush has now gone and in its place there are older, morecolourful plants and an Indian Mallow has been planted with the future. The trade-mark of this patio is its cultural subtleties and the display at the entrance.

Es el campeón a batir, el más ga-lardonado en el último cuarto desiglo y el mejor candidato al pre-mio especial que se ha restituidoeste año: la Mención de Honor.Siete callejones laberínticos com-ponen este minibarrio que diseñóhace un siglo Enrique GarcíaSanz como casa de vecinos en laque llegaron a vivir 23 familias,de las que quedan una veintenade residentes y varios talleres.Este año siguen apostando porplantas clásicas y alguna sorpre-sa, como una nueva glicinia.

La fuente mozárabe o lascolecciones decorativas depiezas rurales.

LA PLANTA

Este año ha incorporado un rosaltrepador. Lástima que la gliciniano suele llegar con flor a mayo.

Es el recinto más pequeño en concurso aunque el porche interior se integra perfectamente en el patio,donde se combinan plantas y colecciones decorativas rurales con una concepción museística y todos los de-talles cuidados al centímetro, desde la gran campana de 1880 a la fuente de inspiración mozárabe o, encuestión de plantas, el naranjo central, el jazmín, la buganvilla, las cintas, las calas, especies tradicionales...

THE PLANTSA climbing rose has been added.It is a shame the wisteria doesn’tnormally flower in May.

The small grand championThis enclosure is the smallest patio and yet the porch integrates with the patio, whereplants combine with collections of rural decoration. It has a museum style to it andevery inch of every detail is meticulously tended to from the large 1880’s bell, the mo-zarbic inspired fountain, the central orange tree and the array of traditional patioplant species: the buganvilla, the jasmine, the spider plants and Callalilies.

El rosal de flores de tres coloresy algunas que son tan raras queaún no ha podido identificar.

“Deslomada”, así se confiesa Juana de tantos viajes entre la azotea, donde florece su reserva de plantas, y elpatio, plagado de piezas singulares (sorpréndase con el pequeño cañón del siglo XVII, el ánfora o la cerámi-ca). Juana comenzó a arreglar el recinto algo desanimada porque los premios los últimos años no hacenjusticia al esfuerzo. Eso sí, conforme se acercaba el concurso ha ido, un año más, entusiasmándose.

Beauty from hard work“Worn out“, Juana declares, by so many trips back and forth from the roof-top, wherethe reserve flowers and plants are kept, and down to the patio. Inundated with uniqueitems. Juana was rather disheartened when she started to arrange the enclosure, due tothe last years’ prizes not justifying the amount of work she has to put in.

Isabel’s patio has over 40 diffe-rent varieties of Chinese gera-niums. This interesting patio pro-vides a contrast of classical (thecolour in the upper gallery or thegreen plants in the lower part)and modern (a discreet retracta-ble roof, that helps regulate sun-light, humidity and temperature.This is the 13th year that the pa-tio has taken part in the competi-tion and has won a prizeevery year. El antiquísimo suelo irregular de cantos,heredero de un inmueble de 1590.

LA PLANTA

La esparraguera ya tiene 5 metros y esteaño hay hortensias y geranios enormes.

En este patio se crió el premioPríncipe de Asturias de las LetrasPablo García Baena. Y no extrañaporque en este patio se respira ymama poesía. El propio recinto,que se remonta a 1590 y que fueparte de un cuartel, luego hospi-tal y después convento, es unpoema. Chari Cantillo está másanimada este año gracias al calorde sus hijos Rafael y Javier, aun-que cada rincón del patio echede menos aún a Juan Antonio Lu-cena. Ojo a la esparraguera de 4metros, premiada en el 2010.

The ancient cobblestoned floor inheritedfrom a resident in 1590.

THE PLANTS

The asparagus plant is now 5 metres tall.There are hydrangea and big geraniums.

This patio created the prize “Prin-cipe de Asturias de las Letras Pa-blo García Baena” and, not surpri-singly, it has an air of poetryabout it. The enclosure itself wasrebuilt in 1590 and made up partof a barracks, later a hospital andthen a convent- it is like a poem.Chari Cantillo is more enthusias-tic this year thanks to the kind-ness of her children Rafael and Ja-

vier Lucena although everycorner of the patio stillmisses Juan Antonio Luce-

El patio de los arcos y las ganas de vivir

El lavadero, del siglo XVIII,incorporado al recinto, o losarcos que configuran el patio.

LA PLANTA

El rosal ya estaba espléndidohace un mes, pero el laurelcentral es el símbolo del patio.

El laurel central recuerda a Juan Aznar en este patio moderno pero con elementos del siglo XVIII, como ellavadero. Y es que cada planta tiene su significado en la casa de Francisco y Milagros, este año un poco de-sanimados, pero que siguen luchando y volcándose en un patio en donde el rosal está este año increíble,por no hablar de la flor de la gamba, un rododendro de 25 años o las dizhigothecas, entre sus 550 macetas.

Patio arches and the joy of lifeThis modern patio contains reflections of Juan Aznar and traditional patios, with its centrallaurel tree and 18th century wash basin. Each and every plant is significant in Franciscoand Milagros’ patio. They have been a little disheartened this year but continue to fightfor the patio, where the rose tree is spectacular, not to mention the main attraction :the 25 year old rhododendron dizhigothecas amongst their 550 flower pots.

Los pendientes de la reina son el sello dela casa. Ojo al abutilón.

Concursa por 19° año consecuti-vo un patio en donde la familiaGonzález tiene claro que es la de-pendencia principal de la casa.No es un recinto-museo, sino queestá concebido para ser vivido ydisfrutado con intensidad. Elabutilón está magnífico, confiesaToñi Lucena, y, por supuesto, lospendientes de la reina, que es elsello de identidad de este patiosin que falte la variedad. Pórticoy arcos y la galería de maderaresponden a la arquitectura po-pular del principios del siglo XIX.

Participating for the 19th conse-cutive year a patio. The Gonzálezfamily are very clear that theirhouse’s main priority is to be li-ved in and enjoyed : it is not amuseum. “The abultilon is mag-nificent“ says Toñi Lucena, and ofcourse the fuchsias, which are thehallmark of this patio along witha vast variety of other plants. The bull fighting district of Santa MarinaSanta Marina has a long history of bullfighting. It is found within the historic part of town but does not experience thefloodof tourists inotherareas.

The Memorial Statue of Manolete and the Santa Marina ChurchThis statue is one the most renowned in the district and one of the reasons tourists venturefrom the Jewish quarter. Manolete was from this neighbourhood, and after being gored todeath in the bullring in Linares, Cordoba paid homage to him with this statue. In the back-ground is Santa Marina, one of the most renowned churches of the Fernando reign.
