TRANSCRIPT
Newman is in the East Pilbara region of Western Australia, located about 1,186km north of Perth and 9km north of the Tropic of Capricorn, it can be reached by the Great Northern Highway.
Newman sits on the traditional lands of the Nyiyarparli people and the Martu people are the current custodians of the land. Newman was built in the 1960s by the Mount Newman Mining Company, following the discovery of rich iron deposits on nearby Mount Whaleback, now the world’s largest open-cut iron ore mine. It is a well-resourced town, with a shopping mall, several hotels, bars and restaurants, an airport and, importantly, a town swimming pool. There are childcare services, a recreation centre, sports ovals and clubs, medical facilities and a hospital.
Newman is also the gateway to some of Australia’s best outback 4WD tracks and some of Western Australia’s most beautiful National Parks. The surrounding landscape is picturesque with the blue, green and red colours of the outback, natural waterholes, ancient Aboriginal art sites and an abundance of Australian flora and fauna.
East Pilbara Arts Centre
Opened in early 2016, the East Pilbara Arts Centre is the home to the magnificent and unique Martumili Artists. The Martumili Artists Group was established by Martu people living in the communities of Parnpajinya (Newman), Jigalong, Parnngurr, Punmu, Kunawarritji, Irrungadji and Warralong.

Cape Keraudren National Park
Cape Keraudren Coastal Reserve is located 179kms north of Port Hedland on the Great Northern Highway. The reserve comprises an area of approximately 4,800 hectares and was vested in the Shire of East Pilbara in 1985.
Cape Keraudren is a haven for marine, terrestrial and oceanic animals and although it can sustain a certain amount of recreational pressure impacts must be minimized.
Wildflowers
Each year from July to September the countryside comes alive as the dusty red earth and golden spinifex grass of the Pilbara contrasts with the vibrant colours of its native wildflowers. The countryside is blanketed with flowers of all colours, sizes and shapes, like the unmistakeable Sturt’s Desert Pea, fluffy Mulla Mulla, the tall majestic Ashburton Pea or any number of the 65 species of Acacia (wattle).
Outback Waterholes
Five beautiful waterholes can be found in areas surrounding Newman. They include, include Kalgan’s Pool, Eagle Rock Falls, Wunna Munna, Three Pools, and Weeli Wolli. Some of these pools are fed by natural spring water and others with flowing waterfalls. An abundance of native Australian wildlife can be found frequenting these waterholes.
