Deepsea 2003

• ...a response to the increasing exploitation of high-seas deepwater fisheries and the need to identify effective means of regulation to protect those fisheries and their environment. Technological development and market demand has both exacerbated these problems while increasing the opportunity and desire to exploit deepwater fisheries at increasingly unsustainable levels– Assessment and management of deepwater

fisheries; – Management of small-scale deep-sea fisheries;– Conservation and management of deepwater

fisheries; and– Bioprospecting in the high seas.

Expert Consultation on Deepsea Fisheries in High Seas

...to the concerns and suggestions made at the twenty-sixth session of COFI and took place from 21 to 23 November 2006 in Bangkok, Thailand. Experts from a range of disciplines and geographic areas were brought together to analyse four main aspects of deep-sea fisheries in the high seas: the overall resource, management of the resource, legal issues, and high seas marine protected areas.

International Guidelines for Management of Deepsea Fisheries in the High Seas

• Sustainable utilization of the deepsea fishery resources in consideration of minimizing short- and long-term impact to the deep sea marine environment, with proper management regimes

SEAFDEC-JFT: Development of Demersal Fishery Resources Living in Un-trawlable Ground in the SEA Region

• Deep-sea Fisheries Resources Exploration in the Southeast Asian Waters, 2007~2010– Investigate/explore deep-sea fishery resources

and fishing ground in SEA waters

– HRD on deep-sea fishery resources exploration

• Sustainable Utilization of Potential Fisheries Resources and Reduction of Post-harvest Losses. 2006~2009– Survey/analyze potential fishery resources in the

un-trawlable grounds in SEA waters

– R&D on the reduction of post-harvest losses for fish handling at sea.

Overall Objectives

• Encourage SEAFDEC MCs on deep-sea fishery resources exploration

• Support research survey of the MCs using MV SEAFDEC2 and their national research vessels

• HRD on deep-sea exploration
