What is Rwanda-VCP?
• A community based project
• Made possible by the participation the community, local and international students
• With a common goal of improving health and living standards in underprivileged communities and developing skills and knowledge of participating students.
RVCP History
• R-VCP was initiated in 2000 by a partnership between medical students of the National University of Rwanda ,the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) and huye district community.
• VCPs are a series of developmental projects initiated by students world wide and they follow the guidelines of the village concept project document, established in 1998 by IFMSA and WHO in Geneva.
• VCPs are intersectorial and multidiscinary

Needs addressed• 98% were settled in the villages after the genocide• The majority are women and children• Gender imbalance• Common diseases: Malaria (cause 94% of mortality),
Diarrhea, respiratory infections, Kwashiorkor, HIV/AIDS• Poverty( most of the people earn 150-200$ US per year) ,
98% are small scale farmers• Lack of sanitation facilities (water, latrines, etc.)• Over 36% cannot read and write • High child mortality and maternal mortality• High fertility rate
Objectives• Improving the village’s general sanitation situation.• Reduction of the prevalence of malaria.• Educating the community on prevention of HIV/AIDS,
