How Students Benefit from Global Health Experiences?

o Knowledge of Other Health Care Systems.

o Interaction with other Cultures.

o Practice/Master other Languages (e.g., Medical Spanish, Medical Mandarin)

o Learn to provide culturally sensitive care to the diverse populations in the US/Canada, including domestic underserved populations (e.g., New Brunswick Latino immigrants)

o Sharpen physical examination skills, understanding of cost-constrained care, and importance of public health.

o These experiences improve the ability for future physicians to advocate for the needs of the most underserved patient populations in the world. They stimulate enthusiasm for medical careers that focus on the health needs of developing countries.

STUDENT COMMENTS http://rwjms.umdnj.edu/global_health/ihig/experiences.html

o “Wonderful experience. I definitely have plans to go back for a global health rotation during my fourth year of school to continue with the experiences that I begun in the summer”.

o “I feel that a moment that best summarizes my global health rotation was having had the opportunity to deliver a baby; This was a life changing, intense and humbling experience”

o “On the whole, we were exposed to experiences that would not be possible in the United States”

o “This was such a great clinical experience. I learned how to use an otoscope to look in a patient’s ear, practiced how to palpate for abdominal pain, how to figure out if an infection is viral or bacterial by looking at the back of the throat with a penlight and tongue depressor”

o “I am now able to appreciate the differences in healthcare between US and another country as well as understand the major public health concerns.”

o “It made me appreciate the power of a good history and physical exam, without the aid of labs or fancy diagnostics. It also gave me an appreciation for public health and nutrition programs!”

o “This experience was truly amazing, not only does it change your outlook on healthcare but it changes your outlook on life.”
