Stylistic Traits

• Invented a technique where he developed solid forms by created small, closely packed dots

• Technique called “pointillism or “Neo-Impressionism”• Used a perfect blend of colors to create his piece• Often painted pictures with sailboats on the water• Used contrasting colors to create image• Some paintings like “Invitation to the Slideshow”

among others “shimmered” b/c of the pointillism technique

• Hard to see the individual dots in his paintings

Vital Statistics

• Born in Paris, Dec. 1859• Born into a middle class family• Father not around a lot--mother had to

raise him and his siblings alone• At the end of his short career had

completed 7 major paintings, 40 smaller paintings/sketches, and 500 drawings.

• Died in 1891 of diptheria

Major Personal Events• Uncle introduced him to art at a young age• 1878, attended the Ecole des beaux-Arts, the official Paris art school in

1878• Started with small drawings--drew fields, the poor, and the circus• First paintings were small, drew scenes of Paris landscapes• 1880, returned to Paris and shared a studio with 2 friends• 1881, traveled with friend to the island of La Grande Jatte-- this became

the inspiration for many future works• 1883-4, created his first major piece Bathing at Asnieres, refused by the

Salon jury• 1886, exhibited La Grande Jatte -- picture created scandal b/c of the

geometrical structured base the dot-like technique gave• 1887, lived with model Madeline Knobloch• Had one son• 1890, created final painting Le Cirque

• 1879 served in the military in Brest: drew scenes of the beaches and sea

• Influencd by Rembrandt and Goya• While at Ecole des Beaux-Arts School,

discovered Essai Sur Les Signes Inconditionnels de L’art (which means Essay on the Unmistakable Signs of Art)

• Book was about the relationship between lines and images -- shaped his career as an artist
