PRESIDENT’S REPORT

J. Dunlea P. Moujalli C.A. McCarthyGeneral Manager

E. GillonD. Petkovich

Dear Member,

By the time you receive this report the festive season and New Year will have passed, and on behalf of the board, management and staff may I sincerely wish that all Members had a safe and joyous Christmas and happy New Year celebrations.

With 2013 now upon us, your Board and Management are looking to the coming months to begin implementing the changes the Federal Government introduced with their National Gambling Reform Bill

2012, which passed through Parliament in late November 2012.

The Bill has enacted that Voluntary Pre-Commitment will commence in 2018 for Clubs such as ours, and although this timeframe seems some years away it will mean that Clubs have to work with manufacturers and technology experts to ensure that compliance is as painless and affordable as possible. We have to start this process in the immediate future to achieve the best outcome for our Club.

For those Members who may not fully understand what the above scheme entails, in brief, it means that players may, if they wish to, obtain a Pre-Commitment card to use on any machine they wish to play and this Card will determine how much they can play up to their pre-determined limit on any given day. When that limit is reached they will automatically be stopped from playing further on any machine in NSW (while they have the card in the machine). Whilst this scheme seems simple, it may require extensive research to achieve the anticipated result. Players who do not wish to participate in this scenario can continue to play with cash as they now do, so it is up to the individual to decide what they wish to do. We will leave you, the member, to decide whether the new legislation will be effective in actually curbing problem gambling. It’s important to note that Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club offers its own voluntary Pre-Commitment option and has done so for the last few years. If you require more information on this option please ask one of our gaming staff when next in.

Another part of the Bill relates to cash withdrawals from ATMs on licensed premises where gaming machines are available, and from February 2014 the limit will be set at $250 per day. This may affect some Members who want to take greater amounts out, but at least it is a better outcome than was fi rst suggested when it was put forward to ban all ATMs in Club premises.

Your Board and Management will hold a Strategic Planning session in the early part of 2013 to revise our current plan to take in the many proposed changes to the regulations and to look at all options in regard to future developments in and around the Club. Any decisions will also hinge on the outcome of the L.E.P. (Local Environment Plan) for the City of Ryde, which is still before Council.

Finally, the Council has indicated that the site specifi c DCP for the “Hawks on Second” site should be fi nalised by May, and this will give us an agreed outline of what will be allowed in terms of development on this site.

So, for now, I hope that all Members had a relaxed and happy break and you continue to support your Club as you have so in the past.

FOOTBALL REPORT

With season 2013 fast approaching, the

Ryde-Eastwood D.R.L.F.C. has agreed to

sponsor the Wests Tigers State Cup team

for the coming year.

This sponsorship has come about

because our former team, namely the

Balmain/Ryde-Eastwood Tigers, will

not be competing this season, which

has left Ryde-Eastwood with the option

of competing in another competition

or linking up with the Wests Tigers as a

Sponsor. This arrangement is for Season

2013, with future plans to be resolved

over the next year.

The Wests Tigers State Cup team will be

coached by Paul Fletcher who has guided

our former team to two Grand Finals in

the last few years, and indications point

to another good Season ahead with Paul

at the helm.

Trials have been set for early February in

line with the Wests Tigers NRL schedule,

and dates and times will be advertised

when they come to hand.

This year’s State Cup will see some

additional teams

entered and the

full draw will be

published when

available.

CAMERA CLUB Another year has come to an end and we looked back over 2012 at our annual Christmas Dinner. This was a most enjoyable evening. Good food and special company. As well as the presentation of awards for outstanding photography, many of our new members received awards for their enthusiasm and club spirit. We thank the Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club and the directors for their ongoing support and especially for the refreshments that they so kindly provide for us at each of our Monday night meetings. A wonderful night was had by all. We look forward to 2013 and the friendships, new creations, presentations, and outings that will be there waiting for us. Among our outings there is a bus trip to the Lithgow Ironfest, and bus trip to the Goulburn Railway Museum. Whether you are a photographer or just enjoy visiting these places, come, relax and join us. Among the many roles that the Camera Club plays, the support of you as a photographer is one shared by us all. We enjoy capturing images and are always striving to capture that special moment, that special image where we marvel at that moment in time. Our fi rst meeting for 2013 will be held at the RELC on February 11th at 8.00pm. Come and join us. You can fi nd out more about out club and its activities at – www.pbase.com/relccc - John Maynard

CHESS CLUB In 2012 Frank Pacey won our club championship at his fi rst attempt, losing only to many-times champion, Bill Gletsos. Frank joined our club in 2011, but too late to play in that year’s club championship. Our 2011 club champion, Donato Mallari was second with Bill, Egon Cardenas, and Stephen Liu sharing third place. Shane Dibley was sixth. Congratulations to all the preceding for making the Final. Our Ryde-Eastwood Classic was won by Arthur Huynh. Alan Marton and Ivan Mitrovic tied for equal fi rst in Division 2. The Bobby Fischer Cup (a rapid play event with each player having to make all moves in 20 minutes plus 5 sec. per move from the beginning of the game) resulted in Lorenzo Escalante capturing fi rst place ahead of three players tied for second: Christopher Ball, Shane Dibley, and Rob Watson. The under 1600 prizes went to Les Mikolajczyk, fi rst ahead of Greig Edwards, second with Vince Chiara, third. Our annual dinner and prize-giving was held on Wednesday, 12 December. Our long-serving patron, Leagues Club Vice President Harry Bell generously supported the evening with a substantial donation. Les Mikolajczyk awarded his President’s Award to Alan Marton for his assistance with various club matters. Donato Mallari won the most-improved player award. To their surprise, Les Mikolajczyk (President) and Dennis Hale (Secretary) were each presented with an Achievement Award by the Leagues Club “in recognition of outstanding service to the Chess Club”. As always, new players of whatever standard are welcome on Wednesdays at 7.30pm. Visit our website at www.rydeeastwoodchessclub.blogspot.com. Contact Les Mikolajczyk (0412 970 059), Greig Edwards (0412 248 223) or me, Dennis Hale (9484 1435).

EUCHRE CLUBThe Euchre Club celebrated the festive season with a dinner in the Ryedale Room. Forty six members and their partners attended and a great night was enjoyed by all. Our patron Paul Moujalli attended with his wife Dianne and he presented the yearly prizes to 1st Ivy Hitchens and Ray Stewart, 2nd Rhonda Fekete and 3rd John King. Congratulations to our monthly winners in September; 1st Ivy Hitchens, 2nd Fiona Arndell, M Campbell, N Coffi ll,Jim Marshall. In October: 1st Jim Marshall, 2nd Rhonda Fekete. In November: 1st Don Baillie and Tyrone Fisher, 2nd John King and Marita Dann. We extend a warm invitation to experienced Euchre players to come along Wednesday evenings in the Willandra Room. Games commence at 7.20pm. The Euchre Club Committee and members wish to thank Managementand staff for their help and assistance during 2012 and wish all a healthy, happy and safe new year. Information regarding membership can be obtained from Don Baillie (President) 98692857 or Mary Griffi th on 98885874. Aces Up. Pierina Dick (Publicity).

THE FISHING CLUBThe new fi shing year is now upon us. We ended last year’s outings in November on a high, with 43.9kg being caught. Flathead was the main catch. December was also a good outing, with 131 fi sh being caught, with Winnie Lo a personal catch of 10.6kg. The results for the year’s fi shing were as follows: The LJ Hayes trophy for the heaviest weight of edible fi sh was won in 2012 by Winnie Lo, with 48.3kg. Runner-up was Michael Chang with 44.2kgs. Gary Lee fi nished in third place with 34.9kg. The winner of the Keith Agget trophy in 2012, as Fisherman of the Year was George Varga with a 1.4kg mowong. George was also the runner-up, with a 1.39kg snapper. Third place went to Michael Chang with a 1.3kg mowong. Congratulations to the winners. The fi shing club organises monthly deep-sea charter boats fi shing trips on the fi rst Sunday of most months. Any interested club member should contact Nic Ceh on 9858 2412 or attend the monthly fi shing club meeting on the third Thursday of each month at 8pm. Upcoming outings are on Sunday 3rd February, Sunday 3rd March, and Sunday 6th April. Fishing Club President - Trevor Fahey.

GOLF CLUB Blackheath hosted round 3 of the championships and for the majority a net 70 was a popular score. Our winner on the day was Valery P on countback from Alan Henderson both with a 70. Windsor was the battle fi eld for our fi nal round of championships, Congratulations to winners on the day, Tony Campbell A grade and Steve Jeffery B grade. The silver medal on the day went to Rick Beves A grade and Edwin Kwong B grade. It was a close tussle in A grade between Tony Campbell and Rick Beves but the 2012 Championship goes to Rick Beves with 209 and Tony Campbell a close second just 2 shots behind. B grade was even closer with Mark Irwin winning with 221 and Alex Sokolov 1 shot behind on 222. Steve Jeffery just missed out with 223. Congratulations to all winners. Muirfi eld was a team event, multiplier at that, but it didn’t bother Kaye Henderson and Peter Armson who took out the day with 75 points. 10 points behind in second place was Alan Henderson and Edwin Kwong. Massey Park was the home of the President’s Cup which was nearly won by the President himself with 39 points but he had to settle for 2nd place with Kaye Henderson taking the honours with 41 points (our fi rst female winner of the cup). The Guzzlers Cup was contested at Penrith in the heat, but this didn’t bother the winner Dave McCullum. For the day’s event, A grade winner was Tony Campbell with Robert Wood runner-up and B grade was Dave McCullum and Slava Sokolov runner-up. Congratulations Tony Campbell on an eagle at the 17th. Hams Day at Lynwood had its usual challenges and happy feasting goes to Ulla Wood and Colin Cope on countback from Mark Irwin and Dave McCullum both on 67 points. Lucky for the winning couple one had a good front nine and the other a good back nine. The hamper winners were Steve and Steve. Next year kicks off at Bexley mid-January Don’t forget to check the website for full results: www.relgolfclub.com Good golfi ng til next time! Annika

INDOOR BOWLSOur presentation dinners for 2012 were very successful. The Wednesday Luncheon was well catered for by Sidney Ho and his staff. Our Consistency Winner this year was a tie with Doris Zammit and Claire Grebert and the runners-up, a tie between Irene Mulcahy and Narelle Waldock. Well done ladies. The Thursday dinner was held in the Dining Room and again thank you to Sidney for the excellent menu. The Men’s consistency was a tie between Jim Corcoran and Jim Harvey, and the Ladies Runner-up was Narelle Waldock with Shirley Robertson a very surprised winner. Presentations were given to Shirley and Merle for their work for indoor bowls. Mr Jack King, our Patron, attended both dinners and we thanked him for his support of indoor bowl, and asked him to thank the Board on our behalf. We have a happy lot of people at indoor bowls and new members are always welcome. Wednesday Ladies at 10.30am and Thursday nights, mixed at 7pm. SQUASH CLUBWe have completed the Spring Competition for 2012. This comp we had 2 teams competing a Div 5 and a Div 7 team. Unfortunately, neither team made the fi nals this comp. It has been a tough comp for many players, with many injuries ravaging many of the teams. Hopefully next comp will be better for all concerned. On a social note, the Annual Presentation dinner was held on Sat 17th November at the Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club and a great night was had by all. It was great to see all the happy faces there again this year. Anyway, Happy New Year to all and we will see you all in the New Year (2013!!!!). I can believe it.... Remember, we are always looking for squash players, so if you are interested please contact Ernie Speed on 9807 3348. Just a Thought:“Life just is. You have to fl ow with it. Give yourself to the moment. Let it happen.”

TRAVELLING BOWLS CLUBHello members. We hope you all enjoyed the festive season with family and friends and didn’t stretch the waistline too much. TRAVEL CLUBA New Year has commenced and with it we hope to enrol new members who will enjoy our Club’s activities. Our A.G.M will be held on Tuesday 4th February, also the renewal of our membership which is $5 per annum. The Club’s three day trip to the Hunter Valley Gardens was well attended and we witnessed a spectacular display of Christmas lights, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed, also we had a very good Christmas meal. On Tuesday 11th December approximately ninety members attended our Christmas party. We wish to thank Sidney for the delicious meal he provided us. A special thank you to our President, Shirley, for her most attractive table decorations, considering she only left hospital the day before after another operation. With the help of her family, everything was in place for Tuesday. A boat trip around the Harbour plus lunch on board is our February outing, which we anticipate will be well attended. I hope you all had a good Christmas and are refreshed for the coming year. If you are interested in joining the club, we meet on the fi rst Tuesday of each month at 2pm and you may contact the Secretary, Margaret Dollar on 9898 3332 for further information.

JOE HOWARD CALLS IT A DAYAfter 14 years of swimming instructing at Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club, Joe Howard has decided to retire from swimming teaching at the age of 82.

He will be sadly missed, as he was a big part of The Fitness Edge Swim School from the early days of its opening until now. He was awarded Austswim Swim Instructor of the year in 2003 for his dedicated work in the industry. He taught a lot of our adults through the years, providing swimming lessons at the Denistone East Public School Pool for 12 years.Joe also ran swimming lessons at Narrabeen whilst on family holidays. Joe would often support his swimmers by attending their school swimming carnivals and would also lend a helpful hand at our Swim Club on Friday nights, encouraging swimmers with technique and times.

Some of our Swim School parents remember him from their own high school days when Joe used to teach Industrial Arts and then Science at Ryde High.

After 56 years teaching swimming Joe will not only be sadly missed by the Swim School staff, parents and students, but also his retirement is a sad loss for the local community. Well done Joe!

FEB MAR APR 2013 23

Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club has recently presented several Sub-Club Achievement awards to members to recognise their outstanding contributions towards the clubs they have served. The Awards were presented recently and were given to (from left to right): Dennis Bainbridge – Camera Club, Coral Staff – Seniors Club, Marie Weston – Seniors Club, Les Mikolajczyk – Chess Club. Absent was Dennis Hale – Chess Club.

ACHIEVEMENTS AND MILESTONES

PASSING THE BATON!The club’s oldest employee (or so we thought!) Joe Howard (82) retired recently as a swim instructor from the Fitness Edge Swim School (see page 18). But before leaving Joe took time to hand over the “oldest employee” baton to Maurie Cousley, a spritely 77. Maurie started with the club as a “young” 59 year old on our poker machine coin count (and is still counting money in our safe reconciliation area). During the “handover” ceremony it came to light that both Joe and Maurie started their careers with the railways, Joe in the carriage building section and Maurie in the offi ce at Wagga where he learned to do shorthand of 80 words per minute, a very rare skill these days.

STOP PRESS!We nearly went to print with this article unedited but fortunately realised that we had made a BIG MISTAKE. Joe was not our oldest employee and Maurie can’t claim the baton! “Hidden” away on Saturday afternoons is our old time dancing convenor, Syd Twist, who is 90 years young and still on the payroll!

Syd joined RELC as a “young” 68 year old and despite some ill health in recent years has been entertaining and organising the old time dance group since then. We apologise to Syd for this oversight. Maurie had enthusiastically taken the baton from Joe but in his own words, at 77 he is “a very poor second”, and will have to go back to waiting in the wings for the

baton to come his way.
