To keep NISA supporters abreast of on-going rescue needs; I now have twopuppies at my house. Spirit and Nikiwere all of maybe 3 months old whenMacon County Animal Care and Controlpicked them up as strays onJune 8th. (And, just how doesone lose track of 3 month oldpuppies I ask?)

Unclaimed strays suitablefor adoption are safe aslong as they remain healthyand space is available. Shel-ter life is very stressful forall animals–more so forpuppies.

On June 30th, with just adays notice, Jim Cooleyheaded South to Decatur tobring these innocent soulsunder NISA’s protective wing. Listed asSammie/Shepherd mixes I believe wecan find loving families to treasure themfor the gifts they are. They have facescould melt a heart of stone!

While it’s common for incoming tobring along some baggage I have to saythese two brought in more than most.Just three days after they arrived sloppystools emerged. Stress? Am I over-feeding? Is the food too rich?

Rescue Report… By jean Gilles

A fecal float/smear revealed tape, whipand hook worms plus a heavy dose ofcocidia, giardia and campylobacter werethe culprits. Oh heavenly days!! Twopups and four adults to medicate at all

different doses is not myidea of a good time.None the less, we didsurvive and triumphedover the parasites. Thatcompleted, the puppiesare growing like weedsand quickly regained theirlost weight.

(The vomiting and diarrheawould have been their deathsentence at the shelter. Under-standably, shelters can notrisk an outbreak of communi-cable diseases.)

Three more individuals contacted NISAfor assistance in finding their Fuzzy bestfriend/s a new home. Heavy sigh…

NISA will try to help, however the own-ers will need to hold onto their Samo-yeds until a home is found.

Sarabi (fostered at Bev Stewarts) is fullyrecovered from her respiratory infection,(Kennel cough/pneumonia), and islooking for a family to love. Bev reportsSarabi needs to (Continued on page5)

Who’s who and where you are...Just a thought – some Members who are on the boundary of 2 different Regions mayselect to volunteer in both Regions.

NISA is always being invited to attend many events scattered in all directions. Nextmonth I will try to list some of these events. At least the ones I know of.

This will show you how many events would possibly come to your Region in thefuture. Maybe the list would help you decide to be a permanent volunteer andmaybe even a Region Manager.

Being a manager is not going to be difficult. With the event list, you will know whatevents are in your region. If a new one pops up, a call or e-mail comes in to informyou of the new event. Since you already know your volunteers. a call or e-mail tothem is all it takes to start the process. After the event, you send (to the PO Box)the donations, a list of volunteers and a short report of how the day went.

Easy as pie, or riding a bicycle.

I’m waiting for your call—847-639-6774. Help us, help them!!

Jazzy sez, thanks! Donna too!!!!

Happy Dog Barkery…by Patty O’Neil

Greetings from one of your rookiemembers and one of the fewmembers to share her home with aGolden Retriever, instead of aSamoyed. I became involved withNISA last winter, just beforeChristmas, when my neighborsrelinquished their 1 year oldSamoyed to me. They no longerwanted him – too much trouble orsome such nonsense. Anyway, I

contacted NISA for help and withina few days they had arranged foster care for him in a-to-adopthome. His name is Rugby and he was adopted by Jackie &Shad Shadinger not long after they took him in as a foster. The wonderful and compassionate people I met during thattime made me want to join NISA and do more to help out.Over the past 7 months I have met more members of thegroup and I admire each and every one of you and all thatyou do in the name of Samoyed rescue!

Earlier this spring I received an email from Beth Staley, ofHappy Dog Barkery inDowners Grove. Beth and hersister, Cheryl, are co-owners ofthe Barkery. On Saturdaysduring the summer they offerthe use of their storefront torescue groups to set up a tableand get the word out abouttheir group. I knew that NISAhad done similar visits atanother dog bakery so I askedJean Gilles if she wanted me to

work with HDB in planning a visit. Of course Jean said to gofor it and that she would help recruit volunteers.

Our visit was set for Saturday, June 30th and luck was with ussince it was a beautiful sunnyday and not too hot. Beth &Cheryl were kind enough tohave a kiddies wading poolfull of cool water as well as awater dish ready and waitingfor our 4-legged friends. That combined with someshade throughout the daykept us all comfortable.

Even though I have volunteered to work at rescue/shelterevents in the past, this was the first time I had been involvedin the planning of an event from the very beginning. I wantto thank both Jean Gilles and Donna Sharik for guiding methrough the whole process and educating me on the location

set up including the merchandise table, informational hand-outs, donation jar and raffle basket. And thanks to Jean forputting the call out to round up volunteers. She managed toput together two shifts ofvery enthusiastic volunteers. The morning shift consistedof Vivian and Curt Joneswith Quincy and Ally andalso Pat Jacobson with Carly. The beautiful dogs attracteda lot of attention frompassersby that morning.Vivian, Curt and Pat wereable to answer a number ofquestions about our groupand the Samoyed breed in general. The afternoon shiftconsisted of Char Kepler and Rusty, Donna Sharik andJazmyn and Ellen West with her foster, Button. Jean was alsoplanning on being there but duty called and after handingLexie off to me, she was off to pick up the pups - Niki &Spirit. The afternoon group also drew crowds of people - all

wanting to touch and petthe fluffy white dogs andfind out how to take careof Samoyeds.

All in all I think our firstvisit to Downer’s Groveand the Happy DogBarkery was a completesuccess. I am sure thatbecause of our visit, thereare now more people inthe Downers Grove area

that know what a Samoyed looks like and what NISA is tryingto accomplish. We found the people we talked to that day tobe warm and friendly andvery generous with theirdonations. No one passedby without at least smiling atour 4-footed friends andmany people stopped to askquestions about our breedand chat about the dogs.Very few people left withoutputting some money in thedonation jar or buying araffle ticket for the basket ofdog goodies. Some even did both! The dogs themselves arethe best publicity for our group and all the dogs there thatday behaved wonderfully and set good examples. We handedout brochures and answered plenty of questions. I amkeeping my fingers crossed that (Continued on page 9.)

Danny looks and acts like he might be a Samoyed-Husky mix but his personality ispure Samoyed all the way. He’s estimated to be about 2 years old, weighs about 63#,current on inoculations, and Heart worm negative.

No one can say with any conviction what Danny’sbreed combinations might be so let’s just say, “he’s aDesigner Dog like they sell in New York pet bou-tiques for thousands of dollars. You’ll never find an-other one like him” No matter what breed he is, he’syoung, sweet, gentle, eager to please and a big marsh-mallow of a goof.

Koda is a large female at 67#and still very much a puppy atheart. Still needs supervision toprevent chewing and mischiefwhen out of her “house” orcrate. As with any young dog,Koda would benefit greatly withprofessional obedience classes.Foster Mom recommends a tallfence for this very agile and

curious youngster. She’s crate trained, compatible withother dogs although she does play very rough. Toorough for kitty-cats. Koda’s estimated age is 1 to 1.5years.

DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH

Rascle is a Sammie/Shepherd mixwith gorgeous caramel splotches in hiscoat. Came to live with 5 other dogs, 2cats and 2 kids. Loves to chase and re-trieve balls or toys. Often when wecome home he runs to find a toy tocarry in the hope someone might like toplay. He loves his cats, his kids andwould really do best as an only dog.

He’s a big food beggar and has, in fact, fallen asleep with his chin on the tablewaiting and hoping for a crumb. Alwaysa gentleman and never helps himselfthough. Rascal is a great eater and unlike

most dogs he actually chews his food.

He loves agood nap onthe couch, also enjoysbeingcombed andwill let youcut his nailswithout afuss. He justlikes to hangout as a buddy. He can be quite a goof andhas us laughing often.

Radar at the age of 4 is an awesome dog at 80pounds of rock hardmuscle. He’s a high en-ergy boy and often doeslaps around the yard toburn off energy. He’scrate and house trained, okay with cats under su-pervision and would dobest with a female play-

mate. Still extremely fearful of strangers.

Button is nearly 2, spayed, cratetrained, great with kids and ready toroll out the door. Sadly, this sweetiemissed out on 3—yep, 3 very won-derful homes by just a day or soafter other plans were made so she’sstill in the system. As her name im-plies, she is as cute as a button.Found as a stray late last fall Buttonneeds someone to love and some one to love her back. A securefence is a must as she is a Houdini.

SAVING LIVES, ONE SMILE AT A TIME

Crosby: FM (foster Mom) Carol, says,Crosby ismakingwonderfulstrides inimprovinghis over-allmanners.FM feelsthat

Crosby’s former family wasn’t always niceto him and some of his behavior stemsfrom mistrust issues. But, she says we’llcontinue to work on that! “I can’t imaginewhy anyone would ever want to hurt such a

wonderful dog. Crosby is truly a luv-bugdeep inside and he’s so mellow about lifein general. I think with a bit more workand lots of patience Crosby will be a de-lightful addition to any adult home.”Crosby loves long leisurely walks and willchange directions on command with noproblems. “He does have very good leashmanners and understands many verbalcommands exceptionally well!” The twolargest hurdles are toy possessiveness andhis dislike for being groomed. Again, FMfeels these are taught behaviors. Asidefrom those two issues Crosby is one of theeasiest dogs to live with.

Lexie is a true gem of all gems. All she wants is a home of her own where she canbe loved and pampered as every little princess should be.She barks or rings a bell to go outside, however it’s wise tokeep her company as she will eat feces. Kitchen garbagemust be secured or this chow hound will help herself. Camein at 78# and lost 5# poundsin the last two months.

The spot on her left rear leg isactually a lick granuloma andis healing quite nicely with the

use of a chew deterrent. She;s good with kids, cats anddogs. Can be food aggressive with other dogs. Prefersto be “top” dog with her human. Currently housedwith multiple dogs and a cat.

Cosmo—A svelte, well conditioned and healthy 5 yearold was adopted in August of 2002by a retired gentleman. A perfectmatch; both needed someone to loveand fuss over. Time passes and thingschange —

Cosmo came back to NISA the endof April and is now busy teachingDuchess the ways of the world. Sofar lessons include: “how to open thebread drawer for a snack; how to

reach tonights dinner from the counter; how to block thefridge door with both feet until a treat is offered; and lastlyhow to reach into the sink for meat-cicles!” With his PrinceCharming personality I know he’ll find a home with some-one and until then he’s loved by his foster.

From Bev Galbraith, Bake Sale Chairperson

I thank all you wonderful, generous, generous people whobrought items and bought items for our Second Annual"Bake Sale at thePizza Party".Many of youbrought morethan 1 item whichwas gratefullyappreciated. Lastyear we madeover $103 and Ihoped to doublethat this year. Thanks to yourgenerosity, we made $240 PURE PROFIT! I thank you forbeing so giving to NISA’s Fur-Kidz.

So, on to the Picnic. Please be as generous to our foodbooth as you were at the bake sale. If you have any ideasabout what you would like to donate, please call me (phone708-868-2849).

Also, we need everyone to bring at least one bag of ice.

Again I thank you for being so generous with the bakedgoods and the Pop Cans. Start saving the cans now andbring them to the picnic (rinsed and crushed). Remember, this is Pure Profit for our fuzzies. See if your family, friendsand fellow employees will help too. Maybe a carton at work, would influence people to participate especially if they aredog lovers. If everyone brought a leaf bag full of cans, imag-ine how much money we could bring in for the furkids.Only the sky is the limit.Bev, Yettie and Starr Galbraith and Jaz Sharik too.

we will get some new recruits to help out at variousevents, foster a homeless dog or better yet even adoptone of our gorgeous fur-kidz.

Many thanks to the great group of volunteers we hadthat day! We certainly appreciate all of you for makingthe effort to be there and for making the day a hugesuccess. Obviously, without volunteers we can’t makethese types of events happen. Without you and yourfriendly 4-legged friends we never would have been ableto talk to so many people. Plus most of us went homewith at least a bag of homemade treats for our dogs fromthe Barkery so they were rewarded for their hard workalso!

Beth and Cheryl recently opened up a 2nd Happy DogBarkery in Elmhurst. In addition to freshly baked treats, they also sell toys, dog care items, specialty foods and

even items for ushumans like t-shirts,cards, etc. If you areever in the area, stopby - I’m sure you willfind something forboth you and yourdog.

AND, next time thecall for volunteerscomes out, pleaseconsider responding ifyou are available. Ithink you’d have agreat time at an event

like this (or at any of our events). While volunteering Ihave met many friendly and interesting people. Whatfun to be able to talk dogs for a whole day and exchangeinformation and swap stories! We hope to scheduleanother Happy Dog Barkery visit for next summer (ifnot before). Please let Jean know if you would beinterested in helping out at any future events. I’m sureshe would appreciate having a list of volunteers she cancount on to participate in our different activities. I havevolunteered to help with the registration at the picnic inSeptember so hope to see you there!

The Humane Society of the United States

George Bernard Shaw once quipped, "Science … neversolves a problem without creating ten more." Well, micro-chipping pets hasn't exactly created ten previously unknownproblems, but the important new technology has left somepet owners scratching their heads like dogs. Particularly nowthat microchip manufacturers have developed competingtechnologies.

The brave new world of microchipping has left pet ownerswith questions. In this section, the experts at The HSUS an-swer them.

I have heard there are problems with microchippingpets. What are the issues surrounding microchipping?

Microchipping is a great tool to help you reunite with a lostpet; however, it is not foolproof. When a lost pet is picked upby an animal control officer or is taken to an animal shelter orhumane society, the professionals there will scan the animalusing a handheld scanner, which will let them know if a mi-crochip has been implanted. The microchip implanted underthe skin reflects the signal given by the scanner to provide aunique alpha numeric code, which is picked up when the ani-mal is scanned. Microchips implanted in 2003 or earlier aregenerally readable by most shelters and veterinarians. Micro-chips that came into use in late 2003 are generally not read-able by most shelters and veterinarians because the chips re-quire different scanning technology. Microchip manufacturershave not yet provided shelters around the country with ascanner that reads all different types of microchips (called a"universal" scanner).

What is the problem for animal shelters and humanesocieties with different types of microchips available onthe market?

Each company that manufactures microchips has its ownscanners, and some of these scanners can only "read" theirown microchip. In other words, in some instances, the scan-ner of one company may not be able to detect the microchipof another manufacturer, which would indicate to the shelterstaff that the lost animal is not microchipped. Without theability to use one scanner for all types of microchips, shelterstaff would have to scan the animal, who may be fearful anddifficult to handle, multiple times with each manufacturer'sscanner. Additionally, some companies provide their scannersfree to shelters, some do not. Without sufficient numbers offree scanners available to equip all animal control vehicles aswell as shelters, microchipped animals may go unscanned byagencies, which can't afford to purchase multiple scannersfrom multiple manufacturers.

My animal has already been microchipped, how do Iknow if my local shelter will be able to read the informa-tion on it?

Common Questions about Microchips … Contributed by Joanne Skidmore

The only way to know for sure if your local animal care fa-cilities have the ability to read the microchip implanted inyour pet is to call them. Visit www.pets911.com, or checkyour local listings to find your local shelter.

My animal has not yet been microchipped. If I pur-chase one, how do I know if my local shelter will beable to read the information on it?

This is the responsibility of the business or group providingthe microchip. Ask whether the chip being implanted in yourpet is compatible with the readers in place in your commu-nity. If there is any question, call your local animal shelter tobe sure.

What do I do if my local animal care facility cannotread the chip that is implanted in my pet?

Call the microchip manufacturer and ask that they send atleast one scanner to your local facilities free of charge.

Why isn't there a scanner that can read all the differenttypes of microchips?

Prior to late 2003, there was a universal scanner that couldread all the chips in use in the United States. However, inlate 2003, companies began selling chips with a new technol-ogy that could not be read by the previous universal scanner. To date, no microchip manufacturer has provided a truly"universal" scanner to read all currently available microchips. The technology to do this is available; the various companiesmanufacturing microchips must agree to share their technol-ogy to make this a reality.

What is The HSUS doing to help?

The HSUS has appealed to the microchip manufacturers todevelop or modify existing scanners (Continued on page 13.)

Page 12 RESCUE REVIEW

Last September, I put in abrief note about TheStillman Nature Center inSouth Barrington. Tom andI took our son, Andrew, and of course, Daisy Maeseveral weeks ago, and hada great day!

On Sundays, you arewelcome to bring yourfuzzers to Stillman.

It was beautiful andpeaceful walking throughthe forested areas where theinsects were happily

singing, on our way towards the main building. Andrew had a lotof fun running on the paths and pointing at different butterfliesand smelling the flowers. Daisy had a “field day” sniffingEVERYTHING she could get her nose in…you know all newsmells.

When we got to the pond (I think it’s more like a small lake), wewere greeted by Lifetime NISA Member, Mark Spreyer, and NISAmember, Sue Allman. Mark is the Executive Director, naturalist(when teaching a group of 2nd graders), and caretaker (whenmowing the trails), and Sue is the Board President. They were kindenough to tell us all about the different areas and habitats thecenter had to offer, how best to navigate around the pond, andwhere the permanently injured raptors were housed. Because webrought Andrew in his stroller, we weren’t able to go on all of thepaths like we wanted to :o(

We were also treated to some of Mark and Sue’s personal storiesabout Mark’s two boys, Jamie and Talus (formerly Dallas) andSue’s two females, Laika and Allie. Jamie and Talus landed in dogheaven because Mark lives on the fenced property. In Talus’younger days, his favorite place to play around in was the cattailmarsh in the warmer months. During the winter, he was quitecautious about going onto the ice in the winter, but his “brother”Jamie likes nothing better to tear across the ice! Before he learnedto apply “ice breaks”, Mark said he looked like a cartoon dogscrambling for traction, (I laugh just picturing that!)

Blue-eyed Laika has perfected the arctic fox leap. She loves tolisten for critters in the tall grass. When she hears something, shesprings in a perfect arc, and sometimes actually pins a volebetween her paws! Allie, the smallest of the pack, is convinced thatthere is something living under the bird blind. On every walk I’mtold, she is needles her muzzle under the building in hopes ofFINALLY getting the woodchuck or chipmunk, or WHATEVER

Traveling “Tails” By: Marilyn & Daisy Mae Frankit may be! Mark and Sue both say that not one of their fuzzers iswhite, but more light gray with a minimum of stickers in their fur!!!

Alexander Stillman donated the property, which used to be a formerestate, for the sole purpose of establishing a nature center. StillmanNature Center, as stated on their web page, is a private, not-for-profit center for environmental education located on 80 beautifuland diverse acres of woods, lake, and prairie lands. The variety ofhabitats there, offer food, cover, and nest sites for many animalsand birds. Stillman is a volunteer run nature center that is alwayslooking for eager people to help out! If you are interested involunteering or for more information on Stillman Nature Center, please feel free to call Mark at (847) 428-OWLS or visit theirwebsite at www.stillmannc.org Stillman is open to the public at nocharge on Sundays. They are located at 33 Penny Rd., SouthBarrington, IL. Their hours are. and April-October 9a.m.-4 p.m.November-March 11a.m.-4 p.m

I hope all of youtake a day and goout to StillmanNature Center! You’re sure tohave a wonderfultime. You arewelcome to bringa picnic and eat inthe picnic area. Please rememberto keep yourfuzzer(s) on aleash and clean upafter them. Checkthem for woodticks in thesummer beforegetting into yourvehicle. They areeasy to spot onyour white fuzzer, and are harmless.

Tom and I are planning on bringing Andrew and Daisy Mae back inthe Fall (my favorite time of the year) and again in the Winter (I’llhave Daisy Mae in her harness, pulling Andrew in his sled)! I’d loveto hear about your “Traveling Tails” to Stillman, or any other tripyou take with your fuzzer(s).

Until next month, “Happy Tails to youuuuuuuuuu!

Common Questions about Microchips… Conclusion

Quote from a serviceprovider’s newsletter:

“Friendship founded onbusiness is a good deal betterthan a business founded on

friendship”

to make them capable of detecting all microchips, regardless of brand. The HSUSwill continue to monitor the situation and assist in developing a long-term solution.

Given the present issues surrounding microchipping, should I microchip mypet?

Yes, microchipping provides an important safety net for your pet. However, beforehaving a chip implanted, talk to your local shelter and/or animal control agency tomake sure the type of microchip your vet is implanting can be read by the scannerbeing used by your local shelter.

How long do microchips last? Do they ever need to be replaced?

Microchips are designed to last the lifetime of a pet—a chip typically lasts at least 25years. Chips do not need replacing. Once the microchip is implanted, it will remainthere and active for the life of the pet.

What else can I do to ensure that my pet will be returned should he or she be-come lost?

All pets should wear identification tags at all times. Tags should include a local con-tact number, as well as a number for a friend or out-of-town relative. Proper identifi-cation tags are your pet's first ticket home if he becomes lost. Microchips provide animportant extra level of protection in the event your pet becomes separated from hiscollar and tags. Providing your pet with both tags and a microchip can help ensure ahappy reunion if the unthinkable happens: your beloved pet gets lost.

Rescue Report… conclusion

I am hoping and praying for a fabulousturnout of attendees at this years Sam ORama picnic fundraiser. We need tooffset the loss of income we’ve beenexperiencing this year.Borrowing an idea from StCollette’s church bulletin,Donna pulled together acomparison chart of incomevs expenses to show NISAsupporters just howimportant they are to savinglives.

As you can see in the table on the rightNISA is running in the red for 2007.Income is $2,267.93 less than ourexpenses. How can we turn this around?

NISA could cut back on expenses, whichwould mean eliminating some of ourstandard vetting practices. Or NISAcould raise yearly dues. What aboutrecruiting more supporters? In doing soNISA would also have a larger pool ofvolunteers.

Another option is to step up the numberof fundraisers NISA has each year or wecould trump up what we have to draw abigger attendance and larger profit tocover yearly expenses.

One idea that immediatelycomes to my mind is tochange Sam O Rama to atwo-day event in 2008. Toaccomplish this NISA willneed a much largervolunteer base. Interested? Are you available ? Call mefor more details.847-392-5000.

Whether it’s promoting NISA’scause to stimulate adoptions, washing shelter windows, educating the public, fundraising, caring for the animals, pullingweeds, cleaning kennels, orstuffing envelopes it all must bedone by volunteers or progressstops.

NISA is still very much a grass-

Volunteers are reallyawesome people!

roots organization by which I meanthat NISA is 100% dependant on askeletal crew of volunteers. This is theimage that needs to be changed. NISAmust have more hands-on volunteersto fill crucial leadership positions inorder to build committees. Then andonly then can Leslie Allison-Seeistructure a campaign to solicitcorporate funding. Speaking of theDevelopment Committee, perhapsYOU have some expertise in this fieldand would like to call Leslie tovolunteer. 630-530-9165.

Sam O Rama is justaround the next corner andwith all that’s been happeningon the rescue front I sure hopelast years volunteers will stepup to volunteer again this year.

Call 847-392-5000 if you canhelp with set-up/break downand/or work at a booth.
