CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES AND HEARTS AND HANDS

WILL BE OUR GUESTS FOR REACHING OUT SUNDAY NEXT WEEKEND, FEBRUARY 10/11.

Hearts & Hands of Indiana, is a ministry that celebrates its mission and vision of helping families and individuals by transforming abandoned houses into homes in our near west-side community. From our beginning 9 years ago, our commitment and success have been sustained by the generosity we have found in our community, our partners , our volunteers, our donors, and the families we serve. We are proud of our short and successful history, completing and selling 11 homes making a sig-nificant difference in the area of St. Anthony and Holy Trinity Parish. Our families have often lived in cramped quarters; or maybe they don't have a home at all. But once they move into a Hearts & Hands Home, great things begin to happen. The families now have a safe, quality home- and because of that, they feel financial stability and peace of mind. The neighborhood is strengthened, children do better in school, and the fami-ly has a more promising future. Please contact us at www.heartsandhandsindy.org or call 317.353-3606 to get involved.

During Lent our St. Barnabas community will participate in CRS RICE BOWL, a faith-in-action program that invites us to encounter our neighbor, as companions on the journey, through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. We will reflect on how an encounter with our neighbor can be transformative. We will see how our prayers, fasting and alms can support those worldwide who are forced to flee their homes to find safety or better opportunities.

Archbishop Daniel M. Buechlein, OSB, 79, monk and priest of Saint Meinrad Archabbey and arch bishop emeritus of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, died January 25, 2018, in the monastery infirmary. Archbishop Buechlein served as the fifth archbishop of the Archdio-cese of Indianapolis from July 14, 1992 until his retirement on September 21, 2011. During his 19 years as shep-herd of Indianapolis, Archbishop Daniel worked to strengthen the archdiocese’s pastoral, spiritual and financial health. He was especially interested in promot-

ing Catholic education, young adult ministry, and vocations to priesthood and the religious life.

NEXT WEEK, we will take up the COLLECTION FOR THE

CHURCH IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE. This collec-

tion supports the Church in over 25 countries that are still struggling

to recover in the aftermath of communist rule. Funds from this col-

lection support pastoral care, catechesis, building renovations, and

seminary formation. Your support restores the Church and builds

the future in this region. Please prayerfully consider how you can

support the collection next week. More information can be found at

www.usccb.org/ccee. Checks made out to St. Barnabas.

Outreach Ministry, Small Church Communities, and

St. Vincent de Paul are collaborating to offer SOUP

SUPPERS again this year during Lent.

Lent is traditionally a time for prayer, fasting and alms giving. It is a time when we look at our lives and consider making a sacrifice to bring us closer to the sacrifice made by Christ to atone for our sins. But many also look for a way to do something positive, to take on a new habit or change an old one. PLEASE CONSIDER joining us for the Soup Suppers as a positive step in learning how our parish is living the gospel of Jesus in Mathew 25: 40-43 “For I was hungry…”.

For 3 evenings in Lent we will share a simple meal of soup and bread and learn more about how St. Vincent de Paul is address-ing the needs of the “those who are hungry, thirsty, and na-ked”. We will learn about Catholic Charities’ Refugee Resettle-ment Program and how we are “welcoming the stranger” who come to our country and how our parish is ministering to those in prison. Following each presentation there will be an opportunity for discussion and questions.

Put FEBRUARY 22ND, MARCH 8TH AND MARCH 22ND on your calendar now and make the Soup Suppers a part of your Len-ten efforts this year. All parishioners and guests are invit-ed. The program is appropriate for junior high students and older. Supper will be served starting at 6pm and the program will start at 6:40. The suppers will be in the cafeteria of the school. A free will offering will be collected.

RSVP in the narthex

after all masses next weekend.

Invitation to All Men - Prison Ministry

A new Kairos men's team is forming to go into the Put-

namville Prison the weekend of April 26-29 to put on a 3.5

day Kairos retreat for about 42 male prisoners. The retreats

are similar to CRHP and Cursillo and afford an opportunity

for the prisoners to develop or renew a relationship with

Christ. We need about 45 men for the Kairos team and in

the past we have had 1-3 men from St. Barnabas join a

Kairos team. Each Kairos team is comprised of fellow Chris-

tians who unite and focus on what we have in common to

bring the Gospel into the prison. Each weekend is a power-

ful and impactful experience.

There will be five team formation meetings before the week-

end and each meeting is on a Saturday from 8:30am to

about 2pm in Gosport, IN, about 40 minutes south of St.

Barnabas. Later, we will ask all parishioners to help support

the weekend with prayer and the baking of cookies to take

into the prison.

1. YOUNG ADULT BOOK STUDY- Please join us for the study which will incorporate Scripture and a book. We will meet weekly for prayer, reflection and discussion on how God is call-ing us to live. The study will be designed in a fluid way that anticipates people coming and going whenever they are able. Outside of our time together, read as much or as little as you’d like! We will meet Monday evenings from 6:30-7:45 in the Parish Hall at St. Barnabas beginning February 5.

2. YOUNG ADULT BREWERY NIGHT - Relax. Drink Beer. Build Community. Join the young adults from St. Barnabas at Mashcraft Brewery for a night of fun on Wednesday, Febru-ary 21 at 7PM! Mashcraft Brewery, 1140 N St Rd 135, Greenwood, 46142

With a grant and other support from our Indianapolis Council, the ST. BARNABAS CONFERENCE OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL will be partnering with the St. Anthony Conference and welcoming 14 individuals into the CHANGING LIVES FOREVER PROGRAM THIS SUMMER, STARTING MARCH 6.

They will come to St. Anthony once a week for e i g h t e e n w e e k s t o “investigate” how they can have a better life. They will work hard during this time, assessing their resources and creating a plan for their future. Graduates from this program will be ready to work toward the plan they have cre- ated but will still need help and encourage-ment as they are m a k i n g changes in their lives.

We will need support from the St. Barnabas parish as well the St. Anthony parish. If you have been considering how you might act on our Indiana Bishops’ Pastoral Letter on Poverty and are drawn to personally making a lasting difference in the life of someone working toward a better life, please prayerfully con-sider helping out. We need mentors, lunch preparers, prayer partners, graduation gift makers and transportation assis-tance for the investigators. We are even looking for facilita-tors for next year.

SOUTHSIDE PARISH FAMILY On behalf of the

Opel and Bartram families, we would like to extend our most sincere gratitude and appreciation for the outpouring of support, love, and prayers in memory of our beautiful girls Mallory and Meredith. Whether you attended the visit-ation and/or the funeral Mass, provided prayerful sup-port, provided food or assisted with the mercy meal at Ron-calli, we thank you for the care and support of many, many south side “family” members. Thank you all so much from the bottom of our hearts for all you have done and for your con-tinued prayers.

Shadow at Cathedral High School Come be a VIP—“Very IRISH Person”—for a day! We invite all 8th grade students to spend a day in the life of one of our stu-dents, meeting teachers, attending classes and experiencing what being IRISH is all about! Camp Cathedral runs from June 4-July 27 and includes half-day single camps and all-day combo camps. Before and after care are available. Families can choose from over 35 sports camps and nearly 60 enrich-ment camps. Camps are grade specific with offerings for Kindergartners through 12th graders. Make new friends and new memo-ries! But hurry, as popular camps fill up quickly. Find more information and to sign up go to www.campcathedral.com.

High School Placement Test Summer Academy

Current 7th graders who want to maximize their potential for success on the High School Placement Test should consider Cathe-dral’s Placement Test Summer Academy. For an early bird price of only $85 for students who register by May 15, students can take a practice placement test on a Monday, receive direct instruction from Math and English teachers for three days, and take another practice test on a Friday. Plus, students receive a free test prep book ($20 value) at the end of the course! Prepare for success on the test, and earn scores that can be used for admission and/or merit scholarships during 8th grade. Choose from mornings or afternoons during one of the two weeks—June 18-22 or July 9-13. Visit www.gocathedral.com/hsptacademy or call (317) 968-7370 to learn more!
