TRANSCRIPT
BELLWORK Today we will be reading an article titled “Beetle
Turns Itself into a Wheel (That’s How it Rolls)”. Write 2-3 sentences predicting what the article is about and what you will learn.
What do you already know about animals/bugs that “roll”? Give examples of things you have seen in real life, heard about, or watched on TV
Write 1 question you have about today’s article, based on the title.
INTRODUCTION
The southern beaches of Cumberland Island, off the coast of Georgia, USA, are part of a national park. To protect the area, only residents and staff are allowed to drive their vehicles on the sands. But there are plenty of wheels nonetheless – small, living ones.
STRATEGY: TWO WORDS-TWO SENTENCES For each “chunk” of the article we read, we
will write a two word title & two sentences summarizing what we learned.
EXAMPLE:National Park
There is a national park in Georgia where most people are not allowed to drive. However, there is some other kind of “wheel” you can find on the island.

If you were an ecologist at this national park, how would you test out this new finding?
If the tiger beetle is one of the best studied species in America, why wasn’t this discovered until recently?
Now that you know what the article is about, what questions do you have?

BACK OFF! The beetle has several
strategies it uses before rolling: threatening with its jaws, playing dead, throwing up…
How might each of these strategies help the beetle scare off a predator or threat?
Why doesn’t it just roll away to begin with?

THINK-PAIR-SHARE
Why did the rolling strategy evolve in so many species?
What could this imply about the history of life on Earth if there are species on different continents that have similar strategies?
Why haven’t any species evolved real wheels?
