Alternative Sort: Can You Wear It?Remove the picture card for six. Lead children to re-sort the remaining cards into two piles, placing things people can wear in one pile and things people cannot wear in another pile.
ELL English Language LearnersUse a word from this week’s sort in a sentence. Show the picture card to children as you use the word. Then have children form sentences using the same word. Repeat with other words from the sort.
Vocabulary Building VocabularyUse a group of pencils or other small objects to demonstrate the number six. Count the objects aloud and have the class repeat after you. Label the group. Then encourage children to find groups of six objects in the classroom.
Teacher TipEncourage children to brainstorm other words that begin with s, h, or sh. Invite them to draw pictures of the words and incorporate them into the sort.
Introduce/Model Small Groups
• Read a Rhyme Read “On Our Ship” several times until children become familiar with the rhyme. Call on volunteers to track specific words, such as sail, ship, and Hold. When children have shown they can track accurately, have them search the rhyme to find words that begin with the sound of s, h, or sh.
• Model Use the whiteboard DVD or the CD picture cards. Explain that children will sort the pictures by the beginning sounds of their names. Demonstrate how to sort horse, shirt, and saw. Help children sort and explain their sorts.
Practice the Sort Independent/Partner
• Have children use the Student Book or whiteboard DVD to name the pictures and use the grid to sort the cards by their beginning sound.
• Have children check and explain their sorts.
Apply Independent/Partner/Small Groups
• Read aloud the directions on Student Book p. 152. Have children work independently or with a partner to write words and draw pictures of things whose names begin like sun, hand, and shovel.
• Game Allow time for children to play Find the Pairs, which is on the CD.
• Little Book Read She Said with children. Have them identify words that begin with /s/, /h/, or /sh/.

Alternative Sort: Animals, Actions, or ObjectsHave children re-sort the cards into three groups: pictures that show animals, pictures that show actions, and pictures that show objects.
ELL English Language LearnersDisplay a picture card and use the word it represents in a question. For example, “Do you have a hat at home?” Have children form sentences using the word to answer the question. Repeat with other cards from the sort.
Vocabulary Building VocabularyDivide the class into three groups. Assign h, ch, or sh to each group. Provide old magazines, and ask the groups to look for and circle words that have their assigned letters. Have groups point out the words they find and read them aloud together.
Teacher TipBe sure children understand that the sound of ch is different from the sound of c or h and that the sound of sh is different from the sound of s or h. Write and have children read these words with you: cat, hat, chat, sip, hip, ship.
Introduce/Model Small Groups
• Read a Rhyme Read “Watch Out, Sheep!” several times with children. Call on volunteers to track specific words, such as Sheep, chugs, and hump. When children have shown they can track accurately, have them search the rhyme to find words that begin with the sound of h, sh, or ch.

Alternative Sort: What Is Alike?Remove the pictures for thirteen and thick. Have children take turns looking at the remaining pictures and finding two or three of things that are alike in some way. Examples: shoe and shirt are things to wear; chin and whisker are found on a face; wheel and chain are found on a bike.
ELL English Language LearnersTo help children remember the four digraph sounds and spellings, discuss and draw a whale, a shirt, a chain, and a thorn with labels such as whale, and post these outlines in the classroom for reference.
Vocabulary Building VocabularyUse whistle in a sentence as a noun, but explain that whistle can be an object, action, or sound. Model for the class how to use whistle in sentences with the other meanings. Invite children to use whistle in their own sentences.
Monitor Progress Spell Check 4After completing Sort 42, administer Spell Check 4. See page 35 in this Teacher Resource Guide for instructions.
