As is clear from the above chart, unlike Lord Esher Princess Beatrice did not structure her

transcription around the original volumes; nor did she indicate on what dates the volumes were started

and finished. It is therefore impossible to determine the final number of Queen Victoria’s journal

notebooks, or to guess at the size, length and format of those which were destroyed (although the

surviving notebooks suggest that, at least initially, the intention was to give the journal a uniform

appearance on the bookshelf).

In the lists below the content and binding of each of the 141 volumes are summarized. In addition, all

insertions (both loose and fixed) are briefly listed.

The volumes are kept together in the Royal Archives, Windsor Castle.

A. Thirteen notebooks (the last partially destroyed), comprising vols 1-13 of Queen Victoria’s

original journal (1832-1837)

These twelve complete notebooks (A1-A12) and one incomplete notebook (A13) are all that remain

of Queen Victoria’s original journal volumes, and date from before her accession to the throne. The

first, bound in half red leather, was a gift to the youthful princess; the second is similarly bound in red

leather. The subsequent volumes are all bound in half brown leather and brown marble boards, with

leather labels affixed to the front boards identifying them as the property of Princess Victoria. There

are no stationers’ marks, and the volumes were probably made, rather than purchased, for the Princess

expressly for her journal. Similarities in the binding of A3-A13 group their manufacture as follows:

A3 & A4; A7 & A8; A9 & A10; A5, A6, A10, A11 & A13. The volumes are of matching size, and

later numbering attached to the spines of A2-A13 further emphasizes that they form a series.

All volumes have distinctive loops attached to the front and end boards which cover the fore-edge

of the text block, so that a pen or pencil threaded through them would fasten the covers together

(although the loops in some cases no longer meet).

The journal entries are in Queen Victoria’s hand throughout. A2-6 also have brief pencil notes by

Lord Esher on the back endpapers.

B. Thirteen bound volumes containing a typed transcript of Queen Victoria’s journal, vols 1-28

(1832-1840), commissioned by Lord Esher

This transcription of the first 28 volumes of Queen Victoria’s journal, covering the period from 1 Aug

1832 to 16 Feb 1840, was typed in purple ink on loose foolscap paper, usually on the recto only, but

sometimes on both recto and verso. At the top of each page of typescript is a pencilled date range, and

the place where the last entry on that page was composed (rubber-stamped for frequently occuring

places, otherwise in pencil).

Every page of transcript (but no title page or blank page) is paginated in type. Numbering sequences

are confined to the original journal volumes, thus transcript volumes which cover two or more of the

originals have two or more sets of page numbering.

There are ms. amendments and marginal markings throughout.

The typed sheets were at some later date commercially bound into 13 volumes by F. Vaughan.

C. 111 bound volumes containing an edited transcript of Queen Victoria’s journal (1837-1901)

by her daughter, Princess Beatrice

The transcription of Queen Victoria’s journals occupied Princess Beatrice from sometime after the

Queen’s death in 1901 to 1940. She worked in reverse chronological order, one year at a time, using

hardbacked and spring-bound copybooks of ruled paper. These copybooks are of three types:

1. A single, suede-bound books (C110), forming the penultimate volume of the transcription (18 Dec

1899 – 16 Aug 1900).

2. 42 matching leather-bound books (C68-109), forming volumes 68-109 of the transcription (1 Jan

1878 – 16 Aug 1900).

3. 68 cloth-bound books (C1-67, C111), forming volumes 1-67 , and – surprisingly – the final (111th)

volume of the transcription (1 Jan 1837 – 31 Dec 1877; 17 Aug 1900 – 13 Jan 1901). These were

supplied to Princess Beatrice by the Royal Librarian, Sir Owen Morshead.

Within each volume Princess Beatrice employs the same method: a margin is ruled in pencil on each

page, in which the date of the entry is written in red ink; the body of the entry is then written in black

ink; finally, a rule in red ink separates this entry from the next. The end result is thus extremely

consistent and easy to navigate. Often Princess Beatrice used two volumes to cover a year,

presumably because one volume would not have been sufficient. This method resulted in a large

number of unfilled pages.

The transcription is almost entirely in Princess Beatrice’s hand, but sometimes a second hand can be

discerned, belonging to her niece, Princess Helena Victoria.

Throughout, passages are marked to indicate that they appeared in print. This adopts the following

system:

Marked in red: Sir Theodore Martin, The Life of His Royal Highness the Prince Consort (5 vols.,

1875-1880)

Marked in green: The Letters of Queen Victoria, ed. A.C. Benson, Lord Esher and G.E. Buckle (9

vols., 1907-32)

Marked in purple: Lord Esher, The Girlhood of Queen Victoria (2 vols., 1912)

Marked in blue: Queen Victoria, Leaves from the Journal of our Life in the Highlands (1868) and

More Leaves from the Journal of a Life in the Highlands (1885)

D. Drafts

D1. A single notebook containing the Queen’s notes for her journal (1855 and 1857)

This hardcover pocket notebook contains rough notes by Queen Victoria which she later used as a

basis for journal entries. It has since been rebound. The contents are outlined in a typewritten note

pinned to the front free endpaper:

Queen Victoria’s Diary, Notes for 1855, 1857

Pages 1-12 Visit of Emperor Napoleon III & Empress Eugénie to Windsor

Apr. 16 – May 1, 1855.

Pages 12-29 The Queen’s visit to Emperor Napoleon III, Paris.

Aug. 18 – Sept. 4, 1855

Pages 29-47 Visit of Pce. Fredk. of Prussia to Balmoral & his engagement (unofficial) to Princess

Royal.

Sept. 5 – Oct. 18, 1855

Pages 48-57 Visit of King Victor Emmanuel II of Sardinia to Windsor.

Nov. 30 – Dec. 10, 1855.

Pages 59-60 Visit of Emperor Napoleon III & Empress Eugénie to Osborne.

Aug 9, 1857.

(Some of these notes do not appear in the Queen’s diary, for instance compare page 52 with Dec.

4/1855 in the Diary.)

There are no other notebooks in the Royal Archive containing notes by the Queen for her journal.

If they once existed, then perhaps they were destroyed by the Queen once she had completed the

subsequent journal entries. This would make the present notebook an accidental survival.

Content: 80 leaves (v + 59 + 16 blank); fols. 1-59 paginated in pencil. Light-blue wove paper, no

watermark; leaf 175 x 113 mm.

Binding: Black embossed leather (boards 175 x 112 mm). Spine: stamped vertically (bottom to top)

in gilt: ‘QUEEN VICTORIA’S DIARY. NOTES. 1855 – 57’ and horizontally along bottom ‘Z / 263’.

Pencil in pencil holder incoporated into back board. Edges of text-block marbled.

Insertions: None.

Reference: Z.263

D2-4. Three bound volumes containing narratives composed by the Queen in or after 1872,

from journal entries written in 1843, 1844 and 1845

The leaves contained in these volumes were originally loose bifolia. Queen Victoria wrote

systematically on the recto and verso of successive folios and foliated them in the top-right corner.

The texts are adapted from her earlier journal entries, and were perhaps made for publication in the

manner of her similarly composed Leaves from our Journal of our Life in the Highlands (publ. 1868)

and More Leaves from our Journal of our Life in the Highlands (1884). The uncharacteristically

legible handwriting and the plain binding of the volumes suggested that may have been intended to

serve as printer’s copy.

D2. Later ‘copy’ (with revisions) by Q Victoria of journal entries written from 2 Sep 1843 (‘On board

the Victoria & Albert, off the French Coast, on our way to Eu’) – 7 Sep 1843 (Brighton Pavilion).

Content: Original bifolia, [ii] + 1-10 foliated by the Queen, now sewn and paginated in pencil 1-39

(p. 40 blank). Watermarks: Britannia emblem, and ‘J. Green & Son / 1872’. Laid paper; leaf (folded

and trimmed) 320 x 202 mm. Holes from an earlier (wire?) binding, top and bottom.
