Last week’s powerful Gospel reading may have le% some open ques$ons and perhaps provided some discomfort. Our Lord was addressing marriage and divorce which is an emo$onally charged topic. Our Lord spoke in defense of marriage even commen$ng on divorce that is permi&ed in the Mosaic Law due to the hardness of people’s hearts. There are many beau$ful and profound reali$es that we can take from this, however, the ques$on remains about the meaning of marriage and the op$ons for a divorced Catholic person. We have to begin by expressing care and concern for people who have suffered a divorce and a&empt to offer compassion and direc$on. It has to be said that divorce is a serious sin but like any other sin, it can be forgiven in the Sacrament of Reconcilia$on, therefore, a divorced person is free to receive the Sacraments. Difficul$es will arise when a divorced person enters into a new rela$onship or remarries because the Church does not recognize divorce, which means that a civil divorce cannot undo the sacrament. There is hope in the annulment process for divorced persons wishing to par$cipate in the life of the Church. In the annulment process, the Church inves$gates the validity of a marriage based on the very beginnings of that marriage. Unlike a divorce which says that a marriage soured, the annulment declares that the couple a&empted marriage but due to those missing or defec$ve elements, it is to be considered as having not been a marriage. This sounds harsh but it will free both par$es to enter into future marriages. Children born out of this union are fully legi$mate. The essen$al elements of Marriage that are considered in an annulment case include the following three. Number one, the couple intends to fully consent to a life together to be separated only by death. Number two, the couple is capable of and fully intends to be open to having children. Number three, the couple is fully aware of the rights and du$es of marriage and is freely and wholeheartedly intent on accep$ng and fulfilling these. In the end, the purpose of marriage or a juridical process in the Church, such as annulment, is for the salva$on of souls so whatever the outcome of an annulment we accept it as an aid for salva$on. Please pray for marriages and the welfare of divorced persons.

El mensaje del Evangelio la semana pasada fue uno fuerte que quizás causo cues$ones o inquietud. Nuestro Señor estaba hablando del divorcio que es un tema di'cil. El Señor estaba defendiendo el matrimonio comentando que la ley de Moisés permi$ó el divorcio solamente por la dureza de corazón del pueblo. Hay bastantes y profundas realidades que podemos cosechar de esto, pero resalta la cues$ón sobre el significado del matrimonio y las opciones para una persona católica y divorciada. Tenemos que comenzar expresando cuidado e interés por los que han sufrido el divorcio. Se debe decir que el divorcio es pecado serio, pero como cualquier otro pecado puede ser perdonado en el sacramento de la reconciliación así que la persona divorciada puede recibir los sacramentos. La dificultad resalta cuando la persona divorciada entra en nueva relación o se casa porque la Iglesia no reconoce el divorcio, esto significa que el divorcio civil no $ene poder de deshacer el sacramento. Se ofrece esperanza en el proceso de anulación en el cual la Iglesia inves$ga la validez del matrimonio desde sus principios.
