It was in the early spr i ng; the gras s was just be ginning to appear, tha strea.mlets wore f lowing , the weather wasn 1t sultry , and a green thicke t was visible. The shepherd's horn was not yet sound­ing sonorously. In the pine grove a t hin fern was still only a small curly frisette.

It was in the early spring, in the shadow of a birch tree, that you smiled at me, and lowe red your eyes. This was your answer to my love ---you lower ed your eyelids .

O, life! O, fores t! O, sun and earth ! O, youth! O, hope ! And I cried before you. It was in the early spring, in the early part of our life.
