As I sit here and look out my window at the snow and the ice-covered lake, it is hard for me to believe the boat launch will be opening in less than 40 days. Just the thought of getting the boats out of storage and back on the wa-ter gives me a good feeling. I always get one or two things for Christmas that are lake related and I don’t get to try them out until the warm weather. This year it’s a slalom ski with dual boots. I hope I can get up on the thing. I also got an anchor to replace the one I damaged last summer. Not as exciting as a ski, but it can be very enjoyable to just anchor out on the lake, enjoy the sun, and imbibe in a beverage or two. I know many Association members have enjoyed ice fishing and snowmobiling, but for me, the summer is when Lake Sherwood comes alive. I have received numerous calls and emails this winter regarding snow removal on the neighborhood streets. I sym-pathize with the difficulty this can cause. The cost for private plowing of the neighborhood streets would be signifi-cant and paying for something that we already pay for in taxes does not seem the best use of the Association budget. Please contact the Road Commission for Oakland County Department of Citizen Services at (877) 858-4804 be-tween 7:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. weekdays, or at 248-858-4895 after hours/weekends with your concerns. You can also contact them at http://www.rcocweb.org/AboutUs/Contact_Us.aspx. There are times when they miss streets and don’t realize it. The more people that contact them for our subdivision, the better response we usually get. They also indicate in one of their publications “The reality is if we have several heavy snowfalls in rapid succession (requiring our trucks to stay on the main roads), it could take four or more days to get into all subdivisions in Oak-land County townships.” If you have some additional information regarding this subject, please forward it to me or attend the Lake Sherwood General Membership Meeting scheduled for Wednesday, April 22nd at Oak Valley Mid-dle School and we can discuss it at that time. At the April General Membership meeting we will be discussing the progress made on the new Association entrance signs. I look forward to seeing where the committee is and hope we are able to come to conclusion on a design so that we can install at least one sign this summer. The entrance signs will be replaced over several years to limit the impact on our annual budget. Another significant project for 2009 will be work done to minimize erosion on the shoreline along the south side of Commerce Road. These types of projects are important to maintain our Associa-tion properties and continue to keep Lake Sherwood a nice place to live. In addition to the water ski and anchor mentioned above, I’m looking forward to trying out a new putter and golf shoes. These will come in handy when the Lake Sherwood Men’s Golf League starts up in May. I joined the league last year and really enjoyed golfing with Association members I had not met and others I have known for years. The league is always looking for more members or substitutes. The league plays nine holes on Sunday morning at Hickory Hills in Wixom. Let me know if you are interested and I will make sure you get all the infor-mation. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you have regarding the Lake Sherwood Association. I can be reached by email at [email protected] and by phone at 248-684-2074. Remember that you can also con-tact any Board member, including your area representative with any questions or concerns.

Lake

Sherwood Landcare Winter hit early and hard and there may not be an end in sight, but Landcare is gearing up for Spring. Each year we do one ma-jor project to keep ahead of the repairs, last year was island seawall repair. This years project is a breakwall along Commerce Road at the North end of the main lake. Over the years the wave action along that shoreline has been eroding away the land. The in-crease of boat traffic and jet skis near the shoreline, along with muskrats and natural erosion have taken its toll along the Com-merce Road shoreline. The project was started about 4 years ago with the renovation of the Commerce tunnel boulder project. That construction secured the hillside and created a more stable path across the top of the bridge to allow for safer foot traffic. The next phase will secure the remaining shoreline, update the trees and plants, provide a habitat for fish, turtles, and other wild-life, and give a much more esthetic look to that end of the lake. We are working with Village Landscape (Stone Work), the RCOC, and the DEQ to come up with the best possible plan. We hope to accomplish this before the end of Spring. The continuation of tree trimming will resume soon. If you are aware of dead, damaged, or dangerous trees, on Lake Sherwood property, please notify me as soon as possible. A couple of residents did contact me in late Fall, but unfortunately I lost the phone numbers. Please contact me again. I prefer to do work like this by lumping as many sites together as possible to make it more cost effective. The island trees will be trimmed this year as well. I have asked my grounds cleanup crew to do a mapping of the plants that we have at the Ledgewood Bridge and Commerce Bridge locations. This will be to determine what plants are doing well and where we need to replace some. The entrance burning bushes will be cut back to sign height to see if we can use them with new signs. They are beautiful bushes that would cost a lot to replace at their size. The sign committee will resume in late April. We are not budgeted for the project this year, but we would like to finalize the plans. If we have funds left over at the end of the boating season, we may start the construction project. We will provide three complete designs and landscape proposals at the August/September member meeting for vote and approval of one by the mem-bership. Please join us for this exciting design process. We welcome your input.

Last year several buoys were damaged or destroyed. They will be replaced this year at your expense (the budget). Please remem-ber, when the boating season resumes, that the buoys are for your protection and safety. They are not to tie up to or as ski obsta-cles. Please respect the property of Lake Sherwood as you would your own private property.

The water level remained unusually high this year, but we are still hoping survey the inside of the dam liner to determine its valid-ity. The dam will have another inspection this year and we will make a decision about renovations at that time.

We are all looking forward to the warm weather returning and the boating season resuming. Please use caution as the lake thaws and take the time to cleanup the shoreline before the water rises. A clean shoreline benefits all of us. As always we strive to make our Lake Sherwood community THE place to live. We take pride in our parks, a-lots, and shoreline and this happens when we all work together. Even in tough times we can get the job done and keep Lake Sherwood a beautiful place to live. I am always looking for neighbor involvement. I am looking for people to organize island and/or park clean-up days. These are one day events. Come join us and meet new people.

Take Care,

Sandy Weber/Landcare Chairperson

By the time that you read this, I am anticipating that there will still be ice on the lake as we have had a particularly deep freeze this year. This can be a dangerous time to be working or playing around the lake. The ice can appear to be safe but may give way at anytime. The good news is that you should be afforded a second opportunity for a beach cleanup, as the shoreline is still exposed as long as the ice doesn’t melt. Once the ice melts the water level may be rising, depending on how many boards are in the dam. We advise that you rake any leaves or debris that are on the exposed part of your beach and rake the loose sand, which has moved down the bank, back to where it was. Also, check for damage to your docks as the winter was so se-vere this year. Any damage should be repaired before people start going out on the docks. This is also a good time to start planning for your summer activities. That includes planning on sending your children to a boating safety class, especially if they will be expecting to drive a pwc this year. If you have access to your boat, you should check out your safety equipment. This includes replacing fire extinguishers if necessary. Check with you local boating store for replacement frequency. You might also check on maintenance intervals for mechanical equipment on your boats so that you summer fun is not abruptly interrupted. For instance, water pump impellers on outdrives and outboards can be an unex-pected party spoiler if the recommended replacement interval is not adhered to. Batteries are also a chronic problem that only seems to crop up when you are having several of your friends out to the lake in early summer. A number of stores have spring deals on new batteries. But above all get ready to enjoy the best summer in Michigan history. I don’t know if we’ll get it, but we certainly deserve it.

Lake Quality Report for 2008

Our 2008 lake was submitted by Dr. Wally Fusil-ier, our limnologist. Dr. Fusilier has been collect-ing data on our lake since 1994 and includes total phosphorus, total nitrate nitrogen, total alkalinity, pH, conductivity, chlorophyll a, Secchi disk depth, and in summer, temperature and dissolved oxygen. (Jim Boggs collects spring water sam-ples, Rob Biondo records summer Secchi disk readings, Nanette Winowiecki & Linda Tucker join Dr. Fusilier for the fall Mapping). In 2008 dissolved oxygen saturations ranged from 89 to 99 percent which is good. Conductivity, measured with a meter, detects the capacity of a water to conduct an electric current; higher the number, the more particles in the wa-ter. Lake Sherwood ranges from 360-600 mi-cromhos per centimeter which is on the high side for a Michigan moderately hard water inland lake. Alkalinities are usually higher than 100 mg/L, indicating the lake is a moderately hard water to hard water lake. Lake Sherwood nitrate nitrogen concentrations range from 5 to 621 micrograms per liter but are generally less than 200 ug/L. These data indicate Lake Sherwood is probably nitrate limited in both spring and summer and no fertilizers containing either nitrogen or phosphorus should be used on near lake or canal areas. Chlorophyll a, reported in micrograms per liter (parts per billion) generally gives an estimate of algal densi-ties. Best is less than 1 microgram per liter. Lake Sher-wood had algal blooms almost every time it was sam-pled (chlorophyll a concentration range = 0.4-12.5 mi-crograms per liter). Sherwood pH values ranged from 7.1 to 8.9. These are low pH values for a lake with high chlorophyll a con-centrations and may occur because of the lakes ground-water springs. Lake Sherwood has phosphorus concentrations in the 14 to 98 micrograms per liter range, with an average of 25 micrograms per liter, best is less than 10 micrograms per liter. The Secchi disk readings showed the average lake clar-ity decreased from 1980 through 2000 and then until 2005, the clarity was for the most part, getting dramati-cally better. In 2006, 2007 and 2008 the clarity was not as good.

LWQIs (Lake Water Quality Indices) are generally bet-ter in spring than in summer. The overall lake indices are good. Mapping of plants for the main lake showed a lot of bushy pondweed, Najas flexilis and some muskgrass (Chara spp.). The southern end had a lot of native mil-foil (Myriophyllum spp.) The east canals had small clumps of muskgrass (Chara sp.) and native milfoil (Myriophyllum sp.) One area had white water lilies (Nymphea odorata) and another had Phragmites. The Wildwood canal had few plants. A full report can be found on the Lake Sherwood web-site. Click on Lake Care at the top of the home page; the click on “click here” 1984-2008 Water Quality Study.

Keeping our lake healthy and weed growth under control requires a group effort of volunteers and out-side services. We are always looking for new volunteers to assist with weed control monitoring and pro-gram assessment. If you are inter-ested in volunteering please email:

Lawn Care

Failure is Success if you learn from it!

Dear Lawn Care Professional: The homeowners of the Lake Sherwood Association are very concerned about our lake quality. We ask that you please be diligent when caring for our lawn for the sake of the environment and ecology of our lake. Specifically, please comply with the following rules, regulations, and expectations:

1. When cutting or trimming our lawn near the shoreline, please instruct and remind your staff to do their best to prevent grass clippings from entering the lake:

Ø Aim discharge chutes away from the lake Ø Sweep or blow clippings out of the streets as all drains lead to the lake

In addition to the ecological issues, grass clippings are very difficult to remove from the water. Deliberate blowing into the lake or carelessness is not accept-able.

2. When using applications of fertilizer or weed control chemicals, please ad-

here to these regulations:

Ø Avoid applying fertilizer within 15 feet of the lake, per the Commerce Town-ship ordinance.

Ø Avoid applying pesticides and fungicides within 20 feet of the lake, per the State of Michigan law.

Ø Avoid use of phosphates, per the Commerce Township ordinance. Ø Sweep or blow fertilizer out of the streets and driveways.

3. When raking or blowing leaves and yard waste during fall/spring clean-ups, all

leaves and yard waste must be disposed of properly.

Ø Avoid raking or blowing debris into the lake. Ø Use yard waste containers or disposal centers.

If you have any questions regarding these or other environmental issues, please con-tact the homeowner who has hired you. We appreciate your cooperation to keep Lake Sherwood a beautiful place. Thank you, ________________________________ Lake Sherwood Association Homeowner

For the last two years, I have not been running the Fishing Contest, instead focusing on the Fishing Tournament which we have held the last couple years in the Fall (and will again this Fall sponsored by the Kaitschuck family). At this time I am reinstituting the Fishing Contest. Remember, this is where you use the form on the LSA website that asks the type, size, date caught and on what, and a witness to confirm your catch. There are two divisions, adult and youth, for this contest that runs from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2009. Any type of fish that is caught in our lake is eligible. As in the past, the association will furnish trophies and/or lures for those anglers that partici-pate. These prizes will be distributed at the General Membership meeting early next year. This is truly a good method to help understand what is going on with our fishery and I encourage adults and kids to participate. Addi-tionally, this is a great opportunity to get the kids excited about fishing and to provide some recognition for their ac-complishments. I am curious about some of our lesser know species, as well as the pike, bass, walleye, bluegills, perch and crappie that I am hoping you will submit. Who is catching carp, golden shiners, bowfin and mudpuppies? I look forward to your entries. Dan Devine [email protected]

It’s been a long cold winter and many of us are ready to get off the ice and get out in the boats. But without a break in sight, we remain on the ice enjoying every minute of it. It beats

watching fishing on TV! In fact, I have seen more people on Lake Sherwood ice this year than any other year I can remember. It is nice to see so many residents enjoying the outdoors. Bluegills remain the primary quarry. Moving around and finding the right location can put some nice ‘gills on the ice. While fishing for bluegills, there often are some nice perch and crappie as well, with the crappies often turning on right at dusk. I got my biggest perch ever right after Christmas; bigger than all those caught on a score of trips to Lake Simcoe in Ontario, bigger than all those caught on hundreds of trips to Lake St Clair and Erie - the biggest of my life in my own backyard! I have been amazed with how many bass we have caught this year through the ice. Remember, after December 31, they are out of sea-son and must be immediately returned to the lake. A good friend showed me up and caught and released 6 nice walleyes over the course of a couple hours from 17 to 25 inches. Truly amazing! I have heard reports of several very nice pike coming on tip-ups. I understand one angler has been leading the KD Outdoors big pike contest for some time with a fish from Lake Sherwood. I would highly recommend that these trophy fish be returned alive to the lake. An additional few words that boarder on preaching and for which I apologize in advance: It is our collective obligation to be involved with the people we allow to fish our lake. Introduce yourself and ask about their association with the lake. The official rules state that the resident must be with the guest angler/s. I know there are times where this is not practical or realistic, but at the minimum we should know when we have guests using our resource. We should make sure that our guests are not keeping more fish than for a meal. We should make sure that our guests have our cell phone numbers with them so they can call us if they are questioned. It is probably not a good idea to post on the various fishing websites, fishing experiences that occur on Lake Sherwood. Naming a private lake and detailing “another great day” only tempts more fishermen to come out and see if they can get on our lake. Wishing all residents a great season on the lake, Dan Devine

Lilah Patchett, age 95 Our sympathy to the Tucker family of 5131 Surfwood Drive. Lilah Patchett, age 95, mother of Linda (Harry) Tucker died Saturday, Jan. 17th at the Angela Hospice. Visitation was Wednesday, Jan 21st, 1pm to 9 pm at the Harry J. Will Funeral Home, 37000 Six

Mile Rd., Livonia. The funeral service is Thursday Jan 22nd 10:00am at the funeral home. The family requests no flowers. Memorials may be made to an organization of your choice.

Remo Nino Caringi of 4022 Sleeth Road passed away on Satur-day, January 31, 2009 at the age of 84. Born in Castelliri, Italy on February 6, 1924, Remo at the age of 10 came to America with his family. They set-tled on Detroit’s East side where his education was interrupted with work to help support the Caringi house-hold. In the throes of WWII, he enlisted with the United States Army and was assigned immediately to

active duty. He fought bravely in Normandy and was wounded in Saint Lo before being reassigned to Material Transport for the remainder of his service. He was awarded 5 medals for his bravery in service. Remo returned home from the war and resumed his studies to obtain his high school diploma. On September 25, 1948 he married the love of his life, Angeline Scarpone at St. Elizabeth Parish in Detroit and began his lifetime career in transportation engi-neering. Remo enjoyed early work with Timken Axle (later known as American Axle) and Paragon Bridge and Steel in Novi. He was with Paragon for thirty years, briefly with Mod-ern engineering and eventually recruited to Chrysler where he remained for over twenty-four-years until his official re-tirement at the age of 84. Beyond his unwavering dedica-tion to work, he was most dedicated to his wife and five chil-dren. Since 1958 he has enjoyed his home on Lake Sher-wood and caring for Remo’s Island, now officially known as Remo’s U-Turn. (Remo’s U-Turn island is the most Southern Island on Lake Sherwood and is in near view of Remo’s Sleeth home). Remo also took care of the Lake Sherwood dam for many years. With the help of his family, he used weekends for home and neighborhood improvement projects. He enjoyed landscap-ing and gardening, reserved special attention to his rose bushes and could be found most times tinkering about his home shop. If something was broken, chances were, Remo could fix it. When he wasn’t building or bettering some-thing, he enjoyed many memorable hunting and fishing trips with his sons. He taught his children how to snow and water ski and was happiest on the occasions that brought his fam-ily together. A loving and devoted husband for over sixty years, at the heart of all his joy was his beloved wife, Ange-line. Joined by her children, numerous family members and dear friends, she mourns his passing while giving thanks to God for Remo’s wonderful life among them. In addition to his beloved wife and children, Joseph, Tom (Paula), Angela Caringi, Karen (Gary) Freida, Rich (Sherry), Mr. Caringi is survived by his 5 grandchildren: 2 step-grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; brothers August (Betty), Mario (Rosaline); sister, Maria (Frank) Fortuna; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and loving friends.

Mom passed away on Jan 17th after 95 years of an extremely wonderful life. And the days that sur-rounded her passing was filled with wonderful friends and neighbors of Lake Sherwood who sent cards, at-tended the service, and even provided refreshments at the funeral home. We have to say that Lake Sherwood is not filled with friends and neighbors, it is filled with “family”. Thanks to all. Linda and Harry Tucker.

One sure sign of spring is the emerging POT HOLES in the street. If your street has pot holes, call the Oakland County Road Commission to get them repaired at:

(248) 858-4804

Also, there is a email complaint form on their website

www.rcocweb.org. If the hole is small and you don’t want it growing larger — there is also a do it yourself solution. Buy a bag of asphalt repair at the hardware store to fill the hole. That will do the trick and keep the small hole from becoming a big problem.

Thanks for being a good neighbor.

I just received this recipe from a friend on the east coast: Mr. Punxatawney Phil

This recipe is here for a couple reasons. One, this will help keep everyone warm after 6 additional weeks of cold weather. Also I was a at lose for more conventional recipe. In the future send in some family favorites to share.

Waco Groundhog in Sour Cream Recipe By: "Indian Cookin'", compiled by Herb Walker, 1977 Amount Measure Ingredient Preparation Method 1 Groundhog, skinned & cleaned 1/2 cup Vinegar 1 tablespoon Salt 2 quarts Water 2 teaspoons Soda 1/2 cup Flour 1 teaspoon Salt 1/2 teaspoon Allspice 1/2 cup Bacon fat 3 small Wild onions 1/2 cup Water 1 cup Sour cream Skin and clean the groundhog. Wash and dry and put in an earthen crock. Cover with water and a half cup of vinegar and 1 T. of salt. Let stand in a cool place overnight. In the morning, remove from brine, wash and pat dry with a damp cloth. In a large soup kettle combine 2 qt. of water and 2 T. of soda. Bring to a boil, lower the heat and simmer for 15 minutes, removing the scum as it rises to the surface. Cover with a lid. Drain and rinse the groundhog meat and cut into serving pieces. Combine the flour, salt and allspice and dredge the pieces of meat in the mixture. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Melt the bacon fat in a heavy iron frying pan until smoking. Brown meat on all sides. Transfer the browned meat into a greased 4 qt. casserole. Arrange sliced onions on top, add water, cover and bake in a preheated oven for 2 hours or until the meat is tender. Transfer the meat to a heated platter to keep warm. Put the casserole on top of the stove over medium heat and spoon in the sour cream stirring constantly. Do not let the sauce come to a boil. Put the meat back into the casserole and simmer for about 15 min-utes. Delicious served with creamed dandelion leaves.

Upcoming Events… Children’s Easter Egg Hunt This year’s Children’s Easter Egg Hunt will take place at 1 p.m. (sharp) on Sunday, April 5 in Kendall Park (Ledgewood at Stumpwood). Candy-filled plastic eggs will be scattered throughout the park for eager children and grandchildren to collect. Children are reminded to bring a container to collect the eggs. As always, all plastic eggs need to be returned for recycling. Other activities include an Egg & Spoon Race and the popular Raw Egg Toss. Don’t forget to guess the number of jelly beans in the container to win a prize! Adult volunteers are needed to stuff plastic eggs approximately one week before the event. Call 685-0631 to volunteer. Sponsoring this event is neighbor and Realtor Randy Wilcox of Keller Williams-Wilcox Realty Group. Perennial Exchange Gardeners and those who wish to adopt a plant, please attend the annual Lake Sherwood Perennial Exchange on Sunday, May 24th fro 3 to 4:30 pm in Kendall Park (Ledgewood at Stumpwood). A raindate is set for Sunday, June 7. Come share gardening stories or ideas. Mingle with your neighbors and enjoy munchies and beverages. Don’t hesitate to come if you don’t have a plant/flower to bring. Always there are plenty of plants/flowers that need adoption. It is suggested that plants & flowers be labeled with the name and preferred light. Most often residents place a plant in a shallow baggie with small amounts of dirt. Once again, we will have a drawing for a perennial basket (value $80) from Bogie Lake Greenhouse. Unable to attend but have a plant donation? Call 685-0631 and we will pick up your plants/flowers Annual LSA Garage Sale Talk to those shoppers who tried Craigslist only to find it’s a scary way to buy or unload your unwanted items. Participate in the annual Lake Sherwood Garage Sale from 9 am till 4 p.m., Thursday, June 4th through Saturday, June 6. Ads will be placed in the local newspaper advertising this event. Night of Lights Boat Parade Stock up now on those miniature lights and stir up those creative juices so as to participate in the Night of Lights Boat Pa-rade on the eve of the Fourth of July Fireworks (July 3rd). The parade of vessels will begin in the large bay off Winewood and Tamwood and continue throughout the main lake (wind permitting). Remember that the light display must fit under the bridge at Ledgewood for those who may use flag poles. Be a part of this colorful display. It is a great way to entertain friends and relatives the night prior to the festive fireworks. Fourth of July Fireworks This year’s firework display will be at dusk on Saturday, July 4 (rain date: Sunday, July 5). As always there will be no docking or picnicking on Higgins Island throughout the day so that the pyrotechnicians can set-up. Past Events…… Holiday Light Contest Winners Hopefully Lake Sherwood residents toured the neighborhood throughout the holiday season to view the colorful display of lights. No one can doubt that residents on Surfwood Drive rallied to provide a spectacular light display. However, many Lake Sherwood residents weathered the early freezing temps to spread the spirit. Sadly, the judges can only select three home-owners to be awarded temporary display signs for their yard and bountiful gift baskets. The 2008 Holiday Light Contest win-ners are the Golles family on Surfwood for first-place, the Richards family on Ledgewood for second-place, and Lee family on Surfwood for third-place. Honorable mentions go to the Barr family on Ravinewood, Soest family on Surfwood, and Bud & Ruth Hughes on Trentwood (his lights glistened brightly along Surfwood as well). Again, thanks to the all LSA residents who braved the cold and provided a beautiful display. Halloween Party Highlights Although the annual Children’s Lake Sherwood Halloween Party was held just days past the deadline of the last newsletter, the dedicated volunteers who helped set-up, work the game stations and tear down the tent and tables need to be recog-nized. These dependable neighbors include Ted Ziegler, Tom Martin, Jeff Bristow, John Petersmark, Tom Hughes, Dave and Michael Schei (set-up & tear-down); Vicky Schei, Cathy Brush, Nalani Hewitt, Audrey and Lauren Ziegler, Megan Doyle, Kaylie Kaitschuck, Lindsey Biondo, Bobby Tamm, Brooke Martin, Nicole Hall, Nolan Hughes (game stations). Unexpectedly, the weather turned windy and blustery cold with a light shower. The costume parade was moved up a half hour early to accom-modate the eager participants. Winning the costume parade were Sarah Nelson as Martha Washington, Christopher Wagner as Count Dracula, and Savannah Herning as Little Chickedee. Winners were awarded a gift certificate from Milford’s Stucchis Restaurant. Special thanks to our generous sponsor neighbor and Realtor Susan McFarland of Century 21-Town & Country.

Lake Sherwood Island Use Permit Form To Lake Sherwood Island Goers: The Association implemented a policy for residents wishing to utilize the islands for late night use. This policy asks all resi-dents who wish to use any of the islands between the hours of 11 PM and 8AM to acquire a permit prior to doing so. The ability to reserve an island will allow families or other groups sole usage during the specified time. Please contact Gloria Hughes at (248) 685-0631 if you have questions or to submit your Permit Form. This application is a requirement for any persons occupying any of the islands after 11:00 PM and before 8:00 AM. This ap-plies for weekday and weekend activity. This application is good for one use only. Should a person wish to use the island again, another application must be completed. Failure to obtain a permit will result in a $100.00 fee. If this fee is not paid within 30 days, the applicant's residence would be tagged with a lien as done with unpaid association dues.

Permit Application for After Hours/Camping for Lake Sherwood Islands There are three islands on the main lake that offer dockage for persons to picnic, socialize and camp. Lake Fast-Traffic Direction We continue to see residents using outdated locations for starting points for pulling up a skier/wakeboarder. The four starting points are: South of Higgins Island South of Castaway Island East of U-turn/Remo Island North of Skier’s Island This does not mean that if your skier/wakeboarder falls, that you have to go back to one of the starting points, this only means that if you are changing skiers, please drop off near one of the starting points so that the next skier can start at a starting location. All too often, we see skiers sitting in their boats, blocking the traffic lane for others. This is especially true at the north end where the lake narrows. At one time, the north end was a good starting point, but not any more; start up skiers cannot see well down the lake for northbound lake traffic coming into the north end. And we encourage boat traffic in this north lake area to reduce weeds and algae. Also, the north end has the best smooth water for ski because of the shoreline being all beach and no seawalls.

Another violation seen often is no “spot person” in the boat with the driver. Always have a 3rd person in the boat or on a PWC when towing.

Be safe. Enjoy the lake.

Lets All Do Our Part To Keep Michigan Alive!

You can download and printout a list of Michigan products at the following website:

www.BuyMichiganNow.com Hi LSA Residents, In short this was a shortened email I received. Here is a fantastic idea from Hour Detroit Magazine ......we could all do this...... think instead of moaning about how bad things are in Michigan . . . we could do something to make it better. LOTS BETTER..... Please not only pledge to act yourself but pass it along to your contacts and get them to Pledge to Act and to pass along also . . . don't wait for others to fix things....we can fix things.... 'If we all spent $10 a week on Michigan products, we could put $36 million every week back into the state's economy'. Every day people bemoan the state of Michigan's economy and here was a simple way for each of us to make an impact. The idea is to shift $10 per week of your grocery budget to products that are from Michigan companies. I wanted an easy to use list of Michigan products that I could find at my local grocery store. (listed on website) There are a lot of Michigan owned grocery stores that are supporting other Michigan businesses on their shelves. Spartan stores are a cooperative; this means that if you buy a Michigan made product from a Spartan affiliated grocery store, you are getting a 'triple dip.' The product is made in Michigan, the grocery store is inde-pendently owned by a Michigan family, and Spartan Stores headquarters is located in Grand Rapids. Other independently owned stores are a 'double dip'. This in-cludes stores like Randazzo's and Westborn mar-kets. Meijer is based in Grand Rapids, so they also count as a double dip. Garden Fresh located in Ferndale. They make the BEST salsa (Jack's Special medium hot is my fave!)! They also donate a portion of their proceeds from the sale of their chips (in the big orange bag) to the Chil-dren's Hospital of Michigan!

Take the Pledge! Go to www.buymichigannow.com to the bottom of the page

We can do something about it. You can even register you Michigan Business in their Blue Pages.

If we all work together we all become stronger!

Let’s show them what we got! Don’t just think about it, do it!

We CAN Make it happen

In searching the Commerce Township Offices site for a Yard Waste pick-up date I came across a recycle link. This flyer from Republic is all of the recycling that they will pick-up curb side. Our family have separate bins for each type of recyclable product and we were loading it in our car and taking it to Royal Oak Recycling on M-59 when we were driving in that direction. They do give you cash for your recycling there, and we’ve gotten as much as $2. Now, knowing that Republic will take all of these same items, and the driving/time it will save, we’ll be putting it curbside. One note, if you have personal infor-mation that you do not want to put in the recycle bin, a good idea is to shred it, bag it and place it in the recycle bin. Here is the site for more information; http://www.commercetwp.com/refuse_collection They also will take chairs, couches or furniture. You need to call in advance, check the site. Let’s do our part, if you have any household items that are salvageable donate them don’t toss them. Many people nowadays are searching the resale shops and Salvation Army for goods. There is a lot of trash being thrown out, that can be reused or recycled—let’s all do our part and make the effort to teach the next generation how important this is. Take the pledge to yourself, to your family, to your community! We did! Please note the items in lower right corner that are unacceptable. TREATMENT NOTICE RESIDENTS IN THIS AREA ARE PLANNING TO HAVE THE WATERS IN THIS AREA TREATED WITH HERBICIDES AND

ALGAECIDES FOR CONTROL OF AQUATIC WEEDS AND/OR ALGAE. This notice is being circulated as required by Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) rules. A permit for the treatment has either been secured or will be secured from the MDEQ before the work is begun. In some cases a permit is not required. You are receiving this notice if you are in the proposed treatment area, or if you are within 100 feet of the proposed treatment area. In some cases, we also provide this notice to persons in adjacent subdivisions as an informational courtesy to advise persons who may have beach rights but are not lakefront residents. We usually work with groups of homeowners or their elected representatives through homeowners associations, or with the owners of apartment or condominium units. Please try to contact any of these in your situation if you have any questions about the proposed treatment plan.

Aqua-Weed Control, Inc. does two types of treatments: algae control and weed control. Algae Control - If we are doing only an algae control treatment using only copper based products then no water use restrictions apply. We will post the shoreline with 14 x 11 inch yellow signs informing you of this work as required by the MDEQ.

Lakes – Typically lake shorelines are treated twice during the summer. Ponds - Expect several algae control treatments during the summer beginning in late April thru Septem-

ber. Weed Control / Water Dye - If we are treating for weeds or using blue dye, then there are restrictions on the use of the water, and we will post the shoreline with 14 x 11 inch yellow signs before these products are applied to the water body as required by the MDEQ. We treat each water body according to a schedule or seasonal plan worked out between the persons in charge and an aquatic manager. A typical plan will include multiple treatments from May thru August and possibly September. However, due to the differences in season plans and the uncertainty of weather please watch your shoreline for the posting of the 14 x 11 inch yellow signs throughout the summer. Typical lake weed control treatment patterns:

If your lake is to be treated with Fluridone then you can expect treatment in late April or early May and then again in mid May.

If your lake is to be treated for weeds using other herbicides then you can expect two treatments a summer. The first being in late May or early to mid June. The second application typically is done in mid too late July or early August depending on weed growth patterns. In a few cases a third touch-up weed application may be required.

Ponds are typically treated for weeds twice each summer. IN MOST CASES YOUR WATER BODY WILL BE TREATED MORE THAN ONCE EACH SEASON; CHECK THIS WITH YOUR ASSOCIATION. The posted signs will indicate the date of the treatment, the product name, the active ingredient and any restric-tions as to the use of the water for swimming, watering lawns and the consumption of fish taken from these waters. We use NEW SIGNS for each treatment. Only products which have been registered for use in the aquatic environment by the Michigan Department of Agri-culture and the US Environmental Protection Agency are used. We anticipate using one or more of the products listed. Please be aware of the restrictions on each product. If the MDEQ changes any restrictions they will be noted on the signs we post.
