Vor- denberg and Avila represent over 500 Souhegan students who chose, studied, memorized, and recited poems as part of this school-wide poetry recitation project. ursday night, 18 students com- peted for the opportunity to win a $15,000 merit scholarship and the chance to move on to the NH State semi-finals. Souhegan Finalists in- clude: Derek Avila, AJ Newell, Mat- thew O’Dowd, Erin Heaney, Saman- tha Prue, Lucas Nevrla, Alli Mensh, Olivia Vordenberg, Dalton Colen, Haley Brannelly, Doug Lens, Han- nah Emery, Brooke Carlson, Bobby Graham, Johanna Griffin, Matthew Yetto, Andi Aiken, Saralyn Carlen. Olivia Vordenberg, School Cham- pion, and Derek Avila, runner-up, will advance to the NH Regional Semi-finals on March 8th at Keene State College. e competition, presented in partnership with the NH State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Poetry Foundation, is part of a na- tional program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance, and competition. Poetry Out Loud uses a pyramid structure. Beginning at the class- room level, winners advance to a school-wide competition, then to Regional Semi-Finals and State competitions, and ultimately to the National Finals in Washington, DC. At Souhegan, students recited works they selected from an anthol- ogy of more than 600 classic and contemporary poems. Judges evalu- ated student performances on crite- ria including articulation, evidence of understanding, level of difficul- ty, and accuracy. Teachers intro- duced poetry recitation in the class- room using materials created by the NEA and the Poetry Foundation, including a standards-based teach- er’s guide, a website, a ‘best perfor- mances’ DVD, and a CD featuring poetry recitations by well-known actors and writers such as Anthony Hopkins and Rita Dove. e NH state champion will re- ceive $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC, to com- pete for the national championship, April 26-27, 2010. e school of the state champion will receive $500 for the purchase of poetry books. 2011 NH Scholastic Art Award Winners Announced Submitted by Martha Rives Congratulations to all of our Souhegan High School winners of the 2011 NH Scholastic Art Awards competition. is year there were more winners than ever. Lauren Conti of Amherst recently had the opportunity to meet Senator Jeanne Shaheen at the Senator’s Washington D.C. office. Lauren is a junior Political Science Major at the University of New Hampshire. She is currently spending the spring semester in our nation’s capital enrolled in the internship program at The Washing- ton Center in cooperation with UNH. In addition to taking a course on International Human Rights, Lauren is interning with The Peace Alliance, a non-profit organization whose mission is to empower civic engagement toward a culture of peace. By a close margin, Souhegan defeated BG and has qualified to go to the National Mock Trial Compe- tition in Phoenix, AZ in May. Teams from Connecticut, Geor- gia, and New Hampshire competed. e NH teams present were Pros- pect Mt. from Sunapee, Milford, Derryfield, e Academy of Sci- ence and Design from Merrimack, Phillips Exeter Academy, Bishop Guertin (three teams), and Souhe- gan High School. e Souhegan team competed against a BG team and Phillips Exeter. Souhegan and BG were the two top NH teams by a very close score. e two teams faced off in a final Championship round, in which Souhegan earned the Championship. is year’s case was a civil trial in which a doctor was being sued for negligence after a tragic auto- mobile accident. After working 30 hours straight, Dr. Hill was on his way home when he was called back to the hospital. As he was driving back to the hospital, his SUV col- lided with a 1963 Corvette owned by Paris LaQuinta. Paris and her friend, Nicole, were returning home from an evening out celebrating the end of college finals. Dr. Hill’s vehi- cle struck the Corvette causing it to roll over. e two passengers were thrown from the car and Paris did not survive. Paris’s parents are su- ing Dr. Hill for negligence. e mock trial students prepared roles of prosecuting and defense lawyers, as well as of witnesses. In the process, students learned about relevant aspects of the law. Hours and hours of work went into prepa- ration for the tournament. Since the NH Bar Association no longer sponsors a state competi- tion, the President of the Yale Mock Trial Association, Kyle Skinner, has been designated the NH Mock Trial Coordinator. e National Mock Trial Association has allowed the NH winner of the Yale tournament to qualify for the National Tourna- ment in Phoenix, AZ. e members of the Souhegan team are: Captains Jill Parolin and Paige Brooks; Anna Ballard, Mike Cinque, Alyssa Peterson, McKen- zie St.Germaine, Emily Koloctro- nis, Kelly Ferguson, Sam Janson, Pia Marciano, and Madison Ad- ams. e team is coached by Rich- ard Vassar. e Souhegan Mock Trial team is currently seeking corporate spon- sorships to help defray the cost of the trip to the National Mock Tri- al Tournament in Phoenix, AZ this spring. AMHERST —Souhegan High School announces the winners of the school contest for Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Con-test. The student winners are Oliv-ia Vordenberg, School Champion, and Derek Avila, Runner-up. Vor-denberg and Avila represent over 500 Souhegan students who chose, studied, memorized, and recited poems as part of this school-wide poetry recitation project.

Thursday night, 18 students com-peted for the opportunity to win a $15,000 merit scholarship and the chance to move on to the NH State semi-finals. Souhegan Mock Trial Team Wins State ChampionshipAMHERST - On Saturday, Febru-

ary 19th, the Souhegan Mock Trial team competed at the Yale Mock Trial Tournament in New Haven, Ct. By a close margin, Souhegan defeated BG and has qualified to go to the National Mock Trial Compe-tition in Phoenix, AZ in May.
