From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto ...

MARCH 5, 2017

My Dear Friends, Our Lenten season has started. Today is the First Sunday of Lent. Let us make it holy by our sacrifices and prayers so that on Good Friday, when we kneel down to kiss Jesus on the Cross, we will feel that we have fulfilled His command: “If you want to be my disciples, pick up your cross everyday and follow me.” Remember that daily Masses are at 7:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., Noon

and 5:30 p.m. each weekday. Stations of the Cross during Lent are Fridays at 9:00 a.m. in the church immediately following the 8:30 a.m. Mass.

The Gospel today is presenting how the Devil tempts us followers of Jesus: 1.Through our body’s weaknesses (hunger, alcohol, sex, drugs). 2.Through doubts about God’s power. 3.Through an inversion of divinity: asking us to have material abundance by selling our souls to the devil through satanic or magic cults.

With Jesus it is easy to say NO! Temptations are occasions either of failure, when our relationship to God is cold, or of triumph, if we stick to Jesus! Let us triumph with Jesus over the devil; and if we fail, let us joyfully receive Jesus’ forgiveness in confession (Sunday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to Noon, at the Church entrance; Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Reconciliation Room.)

One of the Lenten sacrifices is spending less money on ourselves…. and giving it to Catholic Relief Services (CRS) through Operation Rice Bowl, which is a program of prayer, fasting, education and alms giving, an opportunity to pray, share and be united with all of God’s people. Of the money collected through Operation Rice Bowl, 25% remains in the diocese - the rest is used by CRS to support programs “that give hope to a world of need.” Please pick up your Rice Bowl in the Church.

Today, the members of the St. Martha RCIA group will be “sent forth” by me at the 10:30 a.m. Mass to join Bishop Dewane and all our sister parishes for the Rite of Election at the Cathedral at 2:30 p.m. I ask that you remember these candidates for the Sacraments of Initiation and their families as they journey toward the Easter Vigil where they will complete their initiation into our Catholic Faith.

I have once again found a chain prayer in our pews. A chain-prayer is a superstitious practice used by idolaters who do not believe in God as our supreme Lord and Lover; nor do they believe in the all powerful gifts given to us in the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist. They believe that they for sure receive special favors from God by saying certain prayers in succession for a set number of days, usually on a certain day of the week, plus some other fanciful practices resembling pagan practices of the time of Jesus. Our good Mother Church condemns all chain prayers, reminding all Jesus’ followers of Jesus’ admonition: When praying, do not rattle on like pagans, who think they are listened to by mere repetition of formulas; your Father in heaven knows what you need even before you ask…

By the way, these chain prayers or chain letters are

PSALTER WEEK I

different from approved prayers, like the Rosary, which was a time-keeping device used in those ages when personal watches did not exist; so for example, the third Joyful Mystery of the Rosary invites us to mediate on Jesus’ birth “for the space of 10 Hail Marys.”

If you have not made a donation or pledge to the Catholic Faith Appeal yet this year, we need your help more than ever! Last year , St. Martha had less than one quarter of all households in our parish donate to the Catholic Faith Appeal. Although we finally reached our goal at the end of the campaign, it was difficult with so few households participating. With your help, we can do better this year. Please consider make a monthly pledge or a lump sum donation. Our goal this year is $332,000, so we really need your help. Our parish receives full credit for your gift and once we reach our goal, St. Martha receives all of the donations that exceed this goal. Your generosity will help many people and agencies who need assistance, as well as providing for the essential needs of our parish.

On Wednesday, March 8 we will celebrate our Annual Feast of Abraham with Rabbi Brenner Glickman of Temple Emanu-El and Imam Mohamed Benkhaled of the Islamic Society of Sarasota and Bradenton. The service, highlighting faith in one God and creator, and mutual respect and understanding, will be in Fausto Center at 6:00 p.m. followed by all joining in a communal meal. Unfortunately, tickets are sold out, but add your name to the list at the front desk in case of a cancellation. We thank you for your continued support of this annual event!

This celebration is an almost insignificant token to put our religions together. Since I became a Knight of the Holy Sepulcher, in 1982, I was very much in pain in seeing the plight of the Palestinian Christians, combined by the hatred and fratricide terrorist war between our Jewish and Muslim brothers and sisters in the Holy Land. Only prayer and God’s help can do the miracle of peace in the land of the Prince of Peace. But I also thought, what could I do in my little corner of the world.

So together, St. Martha Parish and Temple Emanu-El with Rabbi Simon started to pray to God for peace while sharing a friendship kosher meal. A couple of years later, Hassan Hammami of the Greater Sarasota Muslim Association joined in. And now the three great religions, so much interconnected, are together to beg God for peace and forgiveness of our hatred.

When we pray and celebrate together, we, who claim Abraham as our father in the faith, are just a tiny seed of joyous peace in a world taken by insane rivalry and self destruction. As Cardinal Lecroix well said: “Men and women of dialogue: This is what we are called to be. Full of respect and truth. Like Jesus, let us be mindful of the needs of those we live with. Let us learn to know them and to advance with them. We have a lot to gain from listening, meeting and living together.”

Let’s consider what Vatican II said some 50 years ago: “The Church has also a high regard for the Muslims. They worship God, who is one, living and subsistent, merciful and almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth, who has also spoken to men. They strive to submit themselves without reserve to the hidden decrees of God, just as Abraham submitted himself to God’s plan, to whose faith Muslims

eagerly link their own. Although not acknowledging him as God, they venerate Jesus as a prophet, his virgin Mother they also honor, and even at times devoutly invoke. Further, they await the day of judgement and the reward of God following the resurrection of the dead. For this reason they highly esteem an upright life and worship God, especially by way of prayer, alms-deeds and fasting.

Over the centuries many quarrels and dissensions have arisen between Christians and Muslims. The sacred Council now pleads with all to forget the past, and urges that a sincere effort be made to achieve mutual understanding; for the benefit of all men, let them together preserve and promote peace, liberty, social justice and moral values.” Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Christian Religions, Vatican Council II

ST. JOHN OF GOD MARCH 8

Born in Portugal, he was taken to Spain as a child. At age forty, wracked by guilt over what he considered a wasted life, he sought the counsel of John of Avila, a preacher and missionary, who helped him find a new purpose. He dedicated himself

to the care of the sick and the poor. Others joined him, and they formed the Order of Brothers Hospitallers. He is a patron of hospitals and the sick. Like John, may we be willing to change our lives and dedicate ourselves to helping those in need. Living with Christ

The traditional practice of "giving something up" for Lent is self-denial, to say No to ourselves and Yes to God and others. This reverses the pattern of sin, which says Yes to ourselves and No to God and others. In our

culture, the most violent No to God and others is abortion. More than 3,200 times every day in our nation, people say No to a little child so that they may say Yes to their fears or their plans. This Lent, as we practice self-denial, let's think of these children. Let's offer our sacrifices for them, and reach out to them in love. May all say Yes to God and Yes to the unborn.

I have consecrated my entire self to you, O Lord, and you have led me with your counsel. But in my human frailty I have sinned against you. Therefore, accept my prayer together with the tears I offer you. Purify me, so that on departing toward you my passage may be hastened. Amen.

Seven Deadly Sins/Seven Lively Virtues A Catholic Spiritual Study presented by Fr. Robert Barron

Through Word On Fire Catholic Ministries Join us for a four part video series with Fr. (now Bishop)

Robert Barron as he enlightens us in his study on sin and virtue. Over the course of this study we will be taking a look at what Catholic tradition calls the Seven Deadly Sins and contrasts them with the Seven Lively Virtues.

Lent is a perfect time to assess and enhance our lives as disciples of Jesus Christ. Barron offers much spiritual guidance and relevant examples of how to live more fully our lives as Christians.

The sessions include videos of Fr. Barron on each of the sins and virtues. There is ample time for study and discussion for the group. The facilitator is Dr. Elizabeth Johnston of St. Martha Parish. We will meet Mondays (March 20, 27 & April 3, 10) from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and offer the same materials Tuesdays (March 21, 28 & April 4, 11) from 9:15 to 10:45 a.m. Study materials will be provided.

There is no profession or social condition, no sin or crime of any kind that can erase from the memory and the heart of God even on of his children. Pope Francis

A Message from our Bishop… Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The Season of Lent is marked by many traditions among Catholics in the United States. Symbolized by its ubiquitous cardboard box, Catholic Relief Services, (CRS) Rice Bowl has become a tradition for generations of Catholics. Beginning in 1975 as a response to a growing famine in Africa, CRS Rice Bowl today shines a light on the Catholic community's commitment to poor and vulnerable families - our brothers and sisters. CRS Rice Bowl is global in its reach, bringing tangible goods and services and hope to people in need around the world.

For over 40 years, it has provided resources for families, parishes and Catholic schools to incorporate into their Lenten Season. This year, CRS Rice Bowl provides a path for Catholics in the United States to build what Pope Francis calls "a culture of encounter". By following the daily Lenten calendar, sharing the weekly stories of hope, and making meatless meals, the Faithful! follow a personal journey that leads to us seeing ourselves in the faces of our neighbors, cultivating a spirit of global solidarity and encountering God's love.

Please give generously to Catholic Relief Services' Operation Rice Bowl. While portions of your aid goes to CRS, twenty-five percent of all contributions stay in the Diocese of Venice supporting hunger among families through food pantries and soup kitchens. Thank you for your generosity!

I take this opportunity to extend to you my continued consideration as well as my prayers throughout this Lenten Season.

Sincerely yours in Christ, + Bishop Frank J. Dewane

Bishop of the Diocese of Venice in Florida

POPE FRANCIS PRAYER INTENTIONS MARCH 2017

That persecuted Christians may be supported by the prayers and material

help of the whole Church.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
