PREFACE
The Year 2009 – hard times, but no increase in Festival fees! . . .
In the current financial climate, many organisations – including charities – are facing the prospect of a
few difficult years. You will be encouraged to know that our Festival is relatively well-placed to weather
the storm, in that we have in recent years been able to meet our overheads, and – thanks to the generosity
of our Friends, Sponsors, Advertisers and other donors – have managed to put aside small amounts for a
rainy day. However, we still have to find at least £1,000 per day in order to continue running the Festival
and this figure is unlikely to decrease! We are extremely grateful, therefore, to be in receipt of a very
generous bequest from the estate of the late William Bishop – following a Committee decision, prompt
investment action by our Treasurer has secured a relatively high return on this money for 12 months. We
have therefore been able to avoid yet another increase in entry/admission fees this year, and have even
reduced the admission charges, which will be as follows:
- Admission per session: £1.00 (as last year)
- All-day admission: £1.50 (new - covers all sessions in a day – usually three)
- Season ticket: £5.00 (reduced from £8 last year – covers entire Festival).
At this point, it is worth drawing your attention to the fact that, if you are a Friend of the Festival (annual
fee £8 for an individual or £10 for two members of a family), you will receive a voucher entitling you to a
free copy of the Syllabus and a free Season Ticket. Please see the Application Form in this Syllabus or

Welcome . . .
This year, we are delighted to welcome Jena Pang as Section Secretary for Strings. Jena will be known
to many of you as a highly-regarded Strings and Piano teacher – but has also in the past been a very
successful competitor! He therefore brings a wealth of experience to our Committee and we are very
pleased that he has agreed to join us.
Last year’s Festival . . . The November 2008 Festival ran from Saturday 15
th – Saturday 29
th inclusive, with our Prize Winners‟
Concert on Sunday 30th. Our grateful thanks go to all those who helped to make it yet another successful
and enjoyable event, with good entry and attendance figures and the very high standards of performance
that we have come to expect. There were many highlights during the Festival fortnight - we again hosted
the Freda Parry Scholarship Award Competition (at Crowstone Christian Centre on Saturday 29th); the
winner was Tiffany Redman, to whom we offer our congratulations and every good wish for the future;
our Prize Winners‟ Concert was a great success, and those of you who attended will have enjoyed many
wonderful performances, including a memorable rendition of “Miss Hooligan‟s Christmas Cake” given
by one of our most stalwart supporters, Walter Tee!
Special thanks . . . As I have already mentioned, we are so grateful to our Festival Sponsors – who either support individual
classes or contribute on a more general basis towards our running costs. We should acknowledge in
particular Alfred Music for continued sponsorship of the Piano section; ABC Music, who enable us to
publish our Syllabus and results on-line at www.MusicInEssex.info; KeyMed for our stocks of
certificates and stickers; Peter Parsons for his help in meeting the costs of medals; Allegro Music for the
prize vouchers they are donating to several classes in the music sections; and the Piano Pavilion for their
continued sponsorship of the Senior Recital prize.
The November 2009 Festival - 14th
to 28th
. . . This year‟s Festival will take place at our two regular venues - the Council Chambers for Piano and
Crowstone Christian Centre for the other sections. The dates for the individual sections are on the
cover of this publication. Our PRIZE-WINNERS’ CONCERT at Crowstone Christian Centre, will
be on Sunday 29th
November from 2:30 – 5:00pm. We will not be hosting the Freda Parry
Scholarship Award Competition this year. The scope of the competition has been extended, to cover
the whole of the County of Essex. It is unlikely that our Festival would have sufficient time available to
accommodate the hoped-for increase in entries, so the competition will be run as a separate event, which
will take place at Westcliff United Reformed Church (Kings Road) on Saturday 12th
September
2009, starting at 6.30pm.

New and changed classes this year . . .
Singing:
A new Operetta and Light Opera class has been introduced in the adult Singing section (please note
that Gilbert & Sullivan solos should be sung in this new class, rather than in the Show Songs class). The
Boys‟ Solo (set piece) 13 – 17 years class has been omitted (due to the unpredictability of boys‟ voices in
this wide age range), but be assured that there are still plenty of classes for boys to enter.
Piano:
Two new Impressionist Solo classes have been introduced; there is now a set piece for the Junior
Classic class; the Duet classes have returned to the 4-class format used in previous years (Grade 1/
Grades 2 – 4 / Grades 5-6 / Grade 7 and above); and new Scale Playing classes have been included.
Strings:
Following last year‟s experiment in making the Sight Reading classes non-competitive, it has been
decided to return to a competitive format.
Speech & Drama:
Two new classes have been introduced for Pre-School children – in other words, those who are not yet
attending “Big School”! One class will be for Dance Drama / Mime to Music and the other for Choral
Speaking. Of course, teachers will be allowed to assist the children during the performances.
New awards . . .
We are very grateful to those who have donated new awards to the Festival. Following an appeal at last
year‟s event, a trophy has been given by Mrs Gilbey and Mrs Pollitt for Choral Speaking (10 years and
under, 3-15 voices); our Printers, The Cambridge Press, have given a trophy, which has been assigned
to one of the new Impressionist classes in the Piano Section; Mrs Pearl Bailey has given a trophy in
memory of her son, James Frost, which will be awarded for a young Group Mime to Music/Sound class
in Speech & Drama; and a new Joy Family trophy for Concert Ensemble has been donated by Mr & Mrs
Gibbs.
And finally . . .
We will be supporting a new initiative – “Believe Festivals” – launched by a partnership between the
Federation of Festivals and Barnardo‟s, which is designed to raise the profile of the country‟s talented
young performers, raise public awareness of both Federation Festivals and Barnardo‟s, and assist
Barnardo‟s in raising essential funds for their invaluable work. The first pilot regional festivals (covering
the North East, South West, Scotland, Northern Ireland and London/South East) will be held from May to
September 2010. Entries are invited from group performers (usually involving five or more members),
who are awarded a mark of 84 or above by a Federation Adjudicator.
More details of the above initiative will be available at our Festival in November, to which we are looking
forward very much. Do come along and join us – if not as a performer, then as a teacher, supporter,
interested spectator – or as a helper (we are always on the look-out for new faces – do give me a call on
01702-341195 if interested).

OBJECTS OF THE FESTIVAL
When our Festival was founded in 1911, the first Syllabus set out the Objects of the Festival, which are
repeated below. These timeless sentiments have been, and continue to be, honoured during the Festival's
long and happy life:
1. To encourage the study, performance and appreciation of good music by
holding Annual Public Competitions.
2. To afford the Competitors the opportunity of having their qualifications
tested by eminent musicians.
FESTIVAL HELPERS AND STEWARDS
To ensure the smooth running of the Festival, the services of at least six stewards are necessary at each of
the three-hour sessions on each day; we also need helpers to provide refreshments during these sessions.
There are several other positions which need to be covered, not all of which require you to be present at
the Festival itself. We would welcome any offer of help, however much time you have to spare. The
work is rewarding and the company is congenial!
The Honorary Secretary, Annette Forkin (01702-341195), would be only too pleased to chat to you about
ways in which you may able to help.

ADJUDICATORS
SINGING – Christopher Field, JP, MA, ARAM, LRAM, ARCM
Christopher Field has enjoyed a varied musical career. As a boy, he sang at the Coronation of HM Queen
Elizabeth II in Westminster Abbey and played double bass in the London Schools Symphony Orchestra.
He was a Choral Exhibitioner at Trinity College, Cambridge and a scholar of the Royal Academy of
Music, and later won an Arts Council of Great Britain scholarship for postgraduate studies with Frederick
Husler in Switzerland.
After becoming established as a baritone soloist, he joined the music staff of Dulwich College, retiring as
Deputy Master in 2000. Throughout that time he continued to sing, conduct choirs, play the double bass
and compose. Several of his teaching works have appeared in the singing and double bass graded
examination syllabuses of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and Trinity Guildhall.
Christopher Field is an experienced adjudicator member of the British and International Federation of
Festivals and an Associated Board diploma examiner; he conducts the City of London Chamber Choir,
teaches singing and double bass, runs choral workshops and give singing masterclasses. From 1985 to
2005 he was a member of the Council of the Royal School of Church Music. He was appointed an
Associate of the Royal Academy of Music in 1993.
PIANOFORTE – Anthony Williams, M.Mus, Dip.RAM, GRSM, LRAM
Anthony was born in Rochford, Essex, moved to Leigh-on-Sea and spent much of his youth (when not
practising) climbing over the cockle shells in Leigh Old Town. Anthony then moved to Rugby at the age
of 12 and studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Alexander Kelly. Following success in several
international competitions, he has gone on to give recitals, broadcasts and concerto appearances around
the world. He is also an experienced accompanist, performing with soloists such as Peter Cropper and
Ann Murray.
As a piano teacher, Anthony has established an international reputation, his pupils achieving notable
competition success (including a concerto finalist in the BBC Young Musician) and many going on to
become professional musicians. Having taught at the Royal Academy of Music and Reading University,
Anthony is now based full-time at Radley College as Head of Keyboard and Instrumental Studies,
combining this with a busy freelance career. He has written numerous articles and books on piano
teaching and regularly presents lecture-recitals and seminars on repertoire and the art of teaching, most
recently on piano performance and repertoire to teachers and students throughout the UK (including the
RCM), SE Asia and China.
Anthony is an Associated Board Examiner (both jazz and classical), Trainer and Senior Moderator, a
Piano Mentor on the CT ABRSM course and a former course tutor on the Mtpp (Reading) course. He is
an experienced and busy adjudicator and President of Chipping Norton Music Festival.
WOODWIND AND BRASS – Deborah Brittain, ARCM
For as long as she can remember, music has been a very important part of Deborah Brittain‟s life. She
started playing the piano at the age of five and became a Junior Exhibitioner at the Royal College of
Music at the age of 11, before becoming a full time student in 1961, studying piano with David Parkhouse
and clarinet with Thea King, having been awarded a Major County Award.
On leaving, she joined the BBC, but on marrying and starting a family, embarked on a very rewarding
teaching career. She became an Associated Board Examiner in 1982, examining extensively in the UK
and overseas. She is also a mentor for the CT ABRSM Professional Development Course.
In the past few years, she has resumed performing in and around Oxford as well as being asked to
adjudicate at Music Festivals, becoming a member of the British Federation of Music Festivals.

STRINGS – Viviane Ronchetti, B.Mus, GRSM, ARMCM
Viviane Ronchetti won a Junior Exhibition to the Royal Manchester College of Music to study the violin
with the international concert artiste, Endre Wolf, at the age of 13. She became a member of the National
Youth Orchestra of Great Britain a year later and ultimately, the NYO‟s sub-leader. In 1966, Viviane was
awarded a place to study music at Manchester University and the Royal Manchester College of Music
concurrently. She was a pupil of Professor Alexandre Mouskovsky at the RMCM and graduated with
Bachelor of Music Degree with special Honours awarded in Performance; GRSM and ARMCM with
Distinction.
After graduating, Viviane studied with Manoug Parikian and started on a career combining teaching with
free-lancing with the major London chamber orchestras. She took part in concerts with the English
Chamber Orchestra at the Aldeburgh Festival as well as televised performances by ECO of “Falstaff” and
operas by Benjamin Britten.
She was selected to be a founder member of the violin teaching staff at the ILEA Centre for Young
Musicians at Pimlico School, and from 1986 to 1991, she was a member of the Park Lane Sextet playing
chamber concerts on the South Bank, at the Wigmore Hall and on BBC Radio 3.
Viviane has held Head of Strings posts at Harrow School and Queenswood School and has been a
professor of violin at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama Junior department for five years from
2003 to 2008.
She is Director of the National Youth Strings Academy – founded in 1995 to promote the string orchestra
repertoire and to develop the ensemble-playing skills of talented young string-players aged 9 to 21.
As a specialist Strings adjudicator for the British and International Federation of Festivals, she travels
extensively in the UK and was invited to Hong Kong in 2007 to adjudicate at the Hong Kong Schools‟
Music Association Festival.
SPEECH AND DRAMA – Philip John Thrupp,
LGSM, LLAM (Hons), NDD, Cert.GSMD, Hon.FIEMS, FRSA, FSTSD
Philip Thrupp trained at Exeter College of Art and the Hartly Hodder Studio and has taught speech and
drama to pupils of all ages and public speaking to adults. He has been Tutor of Voice and Speech at
Wesley College, Bristol and regularly adjudicates at festivals in the British Isles, Ireland, the Channel
Islands, Sri Lanka and Hong Kong.
In 1995 he was appointed International Examinations Co-ordinator for the London Academy of Dramatic
Art and worked extensively on the development of overseas centres. In the last five years his work has
taken him to Sri Lanka, Los Angeles, Zimbabwe, Spain, Kenya, Singapore, Cape Town, New York, The
Netherlands and Australia, where he has examined and presented workshops.
In Bristol, he was an adjudicator for the Regional competitions of the English Speaking Union and a
judge for The Rose Bowl Awards for Amateur Drama, a competition involving the whole of the West
Country.
Philip was one of the team of adjudicators chosen for the British and International Federation‟s Festival
of Festivals at Warwick and was invited to become the patron of IEMS, the largest speech and drama
institute in Asia. Philip is pleased to be examining for Trinity Guildhall and in the last four years has
examined in Sydney, Melbourne, Baltimore, Johannesburg, India and Canada. He has recently been
awarded a Fellowship of the Society of Teachers of Speech and Drama.

Please note that Federation Adjudicators working at our Festival will allocate marks using the following
guidelines:
90+ An exceptional performance, both technically and artistically
87 – 89 An excellent performance technically and artistically
84 – 86 A convincing performance technically and artistically
81 – 83 A capable performance showing some artistic appreciation and/or technical ability
78 – 80 A performance showing development of technique and/or communication
75 – 77 A performance limited in its communication.
Awards will continue to be made according to the Southend Musical Festival scheme (please refer to
General Conditions for Competition in this Syllabus). Any performer wishing to know more about the

2. Child Protection Policy
Guided by the British & International Federation of Festivals, the Festival has implemented an updated
Child Protection Policy in accordance with the principles set out in the Protection of Children Act and the
Children & Vulnerable Groups Act. The CPP is printed at the end of this Syllabus.
It is of the utmost importance that the parents / guardians / carers and teachers of competitors under the
age of 18 (or vulnerable adult competitors of any age) make themselves aware of our CPP and their part
in its implementation. It is also particularly important that, where parents / guardians/ carers are not
personally attending with their children, they should be satisfied that they will be accompanied to the
Festival and adequately supervised by responsible adults acting on their behalf.
3. Festival Policy on the use of Cameras and Video/Audio Recording Equipment
Please note that we do NOT allow cameras, video recorders or audio recorders in the Performance Hall;
the presence of such equipment would make it impossible for the Festival to guarantee adherence to the
following rulings:
(i) Child Protection: the permission of the parent or guardian of every child under 18, or vulnerable
adult of any age, must be obtained if a photograph or recording is made of that child/vulnerable
adult;
(ii) Copyright: every person recording would have to have an appropriate current licence from the
Mechanical Copyright Protection Society – this licence would have to be checked by the Festival
on the day; every person recording must have the permission of the owner of the venue and of
ALL performers; adjudicators‟ words are copyright and written permission must be obtained
before they can be reproduced; the Festival is always responsible for upholding copyright and
would therefore be ultimately liable for any breach.
In addition to the above, the use of cameras and/or recording equipment can be disruptive and off-putting
for the competitors, to the detriment of their performance – a significant amount of hard work will have
gone into their preparation for this performance and it is only fair to them that we do everything to ensure
that we provide the best possible platform for them on the day.
4. Time Limits
Competitors are reminded that spoken introductions count towards their use of the time limit.
5. Adjudicator Copies of Own Choice Pieces
Competitors are reminded of the importance of providing a copy of their own choice piece(s) for the
Adjudicator. The copy(ies) should be brought to the Festival and handed in at the appropriate time (with
the exception of own composition pieces, which should be submitted in advance, according to the
instructions in the Syllabus). Failure to provide an Adjudicator’s copy may result in a loss of marks;
there are no photocopying facilities at the Festival itself.

1. The Competitions are intended for amateurs except where marked “A or P”. Conductors and accompanists may, of course, be professional musicians.
2. No competitor may enter a class to be judged by an adjudicator from whom he or she has received private tuition in the previous twelve months.
3. Competitors in Piano, Woodwind/Brass and Strings classes may not enter more than seven solo classes (excluding accompanist and original composition classes) on the same instrument.
4. OWN CHOICE titles, composers, authors and publishers etc. must be given on the entry form. Competitors failing to give this information, or offering a different piece on the day, will be adjudicated, but not marked. A copy of own choice must be provided for the adjudicator at the time of the performance – failure to do so may result in a loss of marks. Competitors may not perform the same piece in more than one class.
5. The use of RECORDED ACCOMPANIMENTS is NOT PERMITTED in music sections. 6. SCRIPTS of dramatic excerpts to be used in Acting Classes 500-502, all Duologues and all
Dramatic Scenes must be sent with the entry form. 7. TIME LIMITS MUST BE STRICTLY OBSERVED TO AVOID LOSING MARKS; competitors are
reminded that spoken introductions count towards their use of the time limit. 8. The Committee reserves the right to amalgamate classes at its discretion. 9. At the end of each class, ALL TROPHIES, PRIZES AND MEDALS will be awarded and all
Certificates and Criticism Sheets will be distributed. ** Please note that trophies, prizes and medals will only be awarded if the first place winner achieves an honours mark of 85 or above.

11. OFFICIAL ACCOMPANIST fees per class are as follows: £4 for competitors aged 15 years and under, £6 for those aged 16 and over and £10 for all
recitals. This fee covers the cost of one rehearsal and the festival performance; competitors must meet the cost of any further rehearsals themselves. A copy of Own Choice music piano score must be sent with the Entry Form; the accompanist should be telephoned as soon as possible to arrange a rehearsal (see page 2). Please also see note (i) below.
PLEASE NOTE: (i) Competitors are allowed one free solo (non-recital) entry out of every five entries submitted.
Where applicable, this concession extends to the Accompanist Fee. Members of the same family may add their entries together to benefit from this concession.
(ii) Where “age” is pertinent to determining the appropriate class/fee, this should be the age of the competitor(s) as at 1
st SEPTEMBER immediately preceding the festival (any exceptions to this
general rule will be stated against individual classes). (iii) NOVICE CLASSES – Signature of Parent, Guardian or Teacher must be given as guarantee that
the competitor has not been learning for more than the time specified for the class entered. Please send all correspondence relating to ENTRIES to the ENTRIES SECRETARY (see Entry Form). Parents/guardians/carers and teachers of competitors under 18 and vulnerable adults of any age must make themselves aware of the Festival’s Child Protection Policy (at end of Syllabus) and their part in its implementation. Southend Musical Festival complies with the data protection principles embodied in the Data Protection Act. Information submitted on the Entry Form will be held and processed on a computer system, solely for the purposes of Festival administration. Completing and signing an Entry Form constitutes acceptance of this practice; any queries in this respect should be addressed to the General Secretary.

The Music Publishers Association has recently issued a revised code of practice on copying
copyright works:
“When an Own Choice work is selected from a publication containing several different
works and which is not published separately, one copy may be made for the use of an
adjudicator at a competition or festival provided that the competitor or participant has
already purchased his/her own copy and that the copy made is retained and destroyed
immediately after the event. The accompanist should always be given a printed copy.”
Candidates are reminded that they should use specified editions where indicated. Songs
may not be used twice. COPIES OF OWN CHOICE must be provided for the Adjudicator
(failure to do so may result in a loss of marks).
TIME LIMITS must be strictly observed; candidates are reminded that spoken
introductions count towards their use of the time limit.
Please note that PROMPTING from the audience is not allowed under any circumstances.
With the exception of Oratorio and Sing & Play classes, competitors are expected to sing
from memory.

the Authors‟ Licensing and Collecting Society whereby entrants do not have to seek copyright
permission for any poetry, prose or solo dramatic items* performed, to a limit of 10 minutes.
Performers and teachers will be delighted to know that this Agreement ensures that authors will
be directly reimbursed as a consequence of their work being performed at this Festival.
*Footnote: Solo dramatic items must be announced with title and author at the time of
performance to qualify for copyright indemnity, and the performer must not change the words or
gender of the character.

THE THOMAS CRANMER SCHOOLS PRIZE CLASSES

THE CRANMER AWARDS are designed to encourage young people to become familiar with
the Book of Common Prayer (1662). All participants in this Southend Musical Festival heats
must select and read passages from the 1662 Prayer Book of not less than three and not more
than five minutes‟ duration. The winners of these two classes will be eligible to compete in the
appropriate age group class at the National Final, which takes place in London next February,
and at which the passages must be recited from memory. The prizes - £250 to the winner and
£250 to his/her school or church – are presented by a distinguished figure (in the past, this has

Passages should be selected from the following:
- a selection from Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer or Holy Communion (omitting any
priestly words – absolution, consecration, blessing);
- a suitable passage from services of Baptism, Marriage or Burial (again, no priestly words
to be included);
- a suitable passage or selection from elsewhere in the BCP – e.g. the Litany, Special
Prayers and Thanksgivings, the Catechism, Commination, Forms of Prayer to be used at
Sea;
- a selection of Psalms;
- the Collect, Epistle and Gospel for any Sunday or Holy Day (or part therefrom).
Judges will take into consideration: diction and clarity, pace and phrasing and intelligent
communication of meaning and understanding of the passages.
* The candidate’s age at 1st February next year should be used to determine which of
the following two classes to enter:

Southend Musical Festival is proud of its collection of cups and trophies which have been donated over the years,
since the Festival began in 1911, by public figures of the Borough and by music lovers and drama enthusiasts
involved in the competitions in one way or another.
Presentation of the cups or trophies is made at the end of the appropriate class, and the winners hold the cup for a
period up to the end of September of the next year, when it (or they) are returned to:
Clive Rogers, Southend Sports Trophies, 536 Sutton Road, Southend-on-Sea SS2 5PW (01702-616046).
Clive is responsible for the care and maintenance of the cups and trophies and also offers an engraving service.

PRELIMINARY STATEMENT: The safety of children and members of other vulnerable groups is paramount and all, without exception, have the right to protection from abuse. All suspicions and allegations of abuse will be taken seriously and responded to swiftly and appropriately and all the charity’s trustees and volunteers have a responsibility to report concerns.
Throughout this Policy, where “children” are mentioned, this also includes members of other vulnerable groups.
1. The objects of the Festival are to encourage the study, performance and appreciation of good music and drama by holding Annual Public Competitions, and to afford Competitors the opportunity of having their qualifications tested by eminent professional adjudicators.
2. The Festival is run entirely by volunteers and is held in two venues, both of which are public buildings open to people other than those attending the Competitions. We seek to inform and involve Parents / Guardians / Carers and Teachers in partnership with us to ensure, as far as it is reasonably practicable, a safe environment at the Festival.
3. This Policy relates to children under 18 years of age, and those vulnerable adults of any age who are identified to the Organisation prior to their arrival at the Festival. This should be done by contacting the address or telephone number at the foot of this document *. In recognising the needs of children from all ethnic groups and children who are disabled, the Festival actively seeks to meet needs notified to it by Parents / Guardians / Carers and/or Teachers.
4. All Festival Committee Members, and non-committee members carrying out jobs which require it, will undertake an enhanced disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau. All Stewards and Helpers are recruited by personal recommendation and are issued with job descriptions, a copy of this Policy and associated procedures; the General Secretary maintains a register of all Festival volunteers. All Stewards are identified at the Festival by ribbons with name badges. The Officer in charge of each session will be a Committee Member, and will wear an identifying red ribbon. If any concern arises for a child or vulnerable person participating in the Festival, then the Officer in charge should be contacted so that the matter can be discussed in a quiet area. Every problem will be taken seriously, and will be documented and dated in a Festival Incident Book, which is held at each venue during the Festival and retained by the General Secretary thereafter.
5. The Festival will make every effort to ensure that Parents / Guardians / Carers and Teachers are informed of its current Child Protection Policy. The Festival therefore urges that all parties make themselves aware of this Policy and their part in its implementation.
6. This Policy is sent out, and printed in the Festival Syllabus and Programme, to inform Parents / Guardians / Carers and Teachers that all children under the age of 18 and vulnerable adults of any age must be accompanied by one or more responsible adults when attending the Festival. Under no circumstances will the Festival act in loco parentis.
7. Practice/rehearsal rooms and public toilet facilities are available but are not supervised by Festival personnel. Parents / Guardians / Carers and Teachers are responsible for ensuring that their children under 18 or vulnerable adults of any age are adequately supervised in these areas.
8. No cameras or video recorders are allowed in the performance hall. The Official Press Photographer may visit the Festival from time to time. If any Parent, Guardian, Carer or Teacher has any objection to a child or vulnerable adult being photographed by the Press, they must inform the Organisation in advance of the Festival, using the address/telephone number below *.
9. Please note the legislation and guidance that supports this Policy: The Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974; The Children Act 1989; The Police Act 1997; The Data Protection Act 1998; The Human Rights Act 1998; The Protection of Children Act 1999; The Criminal Justice and Court Services Act 2000; The Children Act 2004; The Vulnerable Groups Act 2006.
10. The Organisers will constantly review this Policy, revising and enhancing it as necessary. In doing this they will look to the British & International Federation of Festivals for support and that body in turn will look to other agencies for good practice, most notably the NSPCC and Arts Council of England policy guidelines.
WHERE PARENTS / GUARDIANS / CARERS ARE NOT PERSONALLY ATTENDING WITH THEIR CHILDREN, WE DRAW THEIR ATTENTION TO THE 10 POINTS OF THIS POLICY AND REQUIRE THEM TO BE SATISFIED THAT THEIR CHILDREN WILL BE ACCOMPANIED TO THE FESTIVAL AND ADEQUATELY SUPERVISED BY
RESPONSIBLE ADULTS ACTING ON THEIR BEHALF.
