Welcome back Dolsen fam-ilies to the 2017-2018 school year! We also send out a spe-cial welcome to our new fami-lies both from Kent Lake and from other districts. We have had a very busy opening this year. Our build-ing had extensive renovations over the summer and we are happy to start the year with these new changes including air conditioning in all our classrooms. We are beginning the year with an opening enrollment of 450 students. This is less than last year as some of our fami-lies were redistricted to Pear-son Elementary which just opened for this school year.

This edition of The Dol-

sen Discovery will be the only edition this year as we convert to a weekly communication that will be sent electronically via Skylert. Please carefully read through all of the infor-

mation in this newsletter and keep it for reference so that your experience throughout the year is a successful one. We are looking forward to a wonderful year! As we welcome our fami-lies back, student achievement remains our highest priority. We have a very dedicated staff, and very active and sup-portive families and communi-ty members. It is a pleasure to open another year at Dolsen. Dolsen Elementary is proud to be an NCA/AdvancED Accredited school. We utilize research based best practices in all of our class-rooms. We Are Dolsen!

At Dolsen we work hard to be a community of learners. We are all part of a

team. As a team member, it is important for every student to work collaboratively for the

benefit of our school community. Therefore, we have common rules and expectations for

all students at Dolsen. Our school rules are:

We are Dolsen

We take care of ourselves.

We take care of each other.

We take care of our school.

We are ready to learn!

These rules allow us to learn, help to keep us safe, and are part of a common language

that we use. They are being taught and modeled in each classroom. All staff members

are responsible for enforcing these rules and will assist students that need reminders.

If a child has difficulty understanding or cooperating with these rules, we take time to

teach behaviors that support caring for ourselves, others and our school.

As staff and parents work together to create a healthy learning environment for all

children, we appreciate parental support in reinforcing these school rules at home.

Please take time to discuss the Dolsen school rules with your child(ren) at home.

We appreciate your continued support!

Morning Procedure Please review our morning procedure in

order to ensure a smooth start to each day.

8:47 a.m. Doors unlock and students enter

the building, walk to their classrooms, and

have a seat by their lockers. Parents are

not permitted to walk students down to

their classrooms.

8:52 a.m. 1st bell rings, students may get

their supplies ready for the day and enter

the classroom. We ask that students do not

enter their lockers prior to this time.

8:57 a.m. 2nd bell rings, and students

should be in their classroom.

Instructional time begins.

Students are marked tardy after 8:57 a.m.

Please do not drop off students prior to 8:47

because there will be no supervision.

If you must drop your child off before 8:47,

please enroll in before school childcare.

Dismissal Procedure Please also review our dismissal

procedure for all students at Dolsen.

Parents who are picking students up line

up at the gym doors in the cafeteria hall-

way. On half days, parents will enter the

gym at 11:41, and full days at 3:50.

Upon entering, parents present ID to staff

and sign out their child(ren). Parents will

wait in the middle of the gym until they see

their child(ren) arrive at the designated

grade level spot. Parents will then meet

their child(ren), and exit the gym. We

have support staff stationed throughout the

gym area during this time. Please note en-

tering and exiting are at marked doors only

and photo ID is required. If someone other

than a parent is picking up a child, this

person must be on the emergency card, or

written communication with the office must

be made prior to pick up.

Thank you for your cooperation with our

dismissal procedure. This allows a smooth

transition at this very busy time of day.

Parking Reminder

As part of our renovations, we have added additional parking at Dolsen. Howev-

er, we only have one bus look and still have limited parking here at Dolsen.

Please remain aware of our buses who need to safely transport students to and

from school each day. During this time, cars are prohibited from entering and

exiting the front bus loop. Thank you for your cooperation in ensuring the safety

of our students.

Thank You Volunteers!

We would like to thank all of our volunteers for their “behind the

Skylert Communication System The South Lyon Community School District uses an exciting District-wide notification system called Skylert. Skylert provides the District with the ability to send instant communication via phone, SMS text message, and email to parents and staff. Our goal is to utilize this effective and efficient communi-cation system as part of our continuous effort in keeping staff, students and parents informed and safe! In order for Skylert to be as effective as possible, we ask you to review and update your contact information and notification preferences in your Skyward Family Access account. We highly recommend updating your information, as we will be relaying important District updates throughout the 2017-2018 school year. To make changes to your Skylert preferences, log in to Skyward Family Access (if you do not know your family access login and password, please contact the office). Once logged-in, click on Skylert on the General Information menu on the left navigation bar. Your Skylert settings will display. If you desire to make changes, click on Edit on the right of the screen. Please contact the office staff if you have questions regarding changes to your Skylert account. Note: Only Primary Guardians are able to update the Skylert primary contact information via Family Access. The Skylert notification system allows South Lyon Community Schools the ability to disseminate in-formation to parents and staff by way of three notification types: Emergency, General, and Attendance. Emergency notifications will reference events such as school closings, safety related incidents, and oth-er emergency notifications determined by District administrators. General notifications are for informa-tional purposes only and will reference various District and school events and information. Attendance notifications will only be generated if your student has an unexcused absence for one or more periods during an instructional day. Again, we encourage you to visit Family Access and update your contact information and notification preferences. If you have further questions regarding our new messaging system, please contact the of-fice.

Reminders Regarding SLCS Security System: Thank you for helping to keep our school safe.

Please remember:

Never open the door for other visitors.

Report any concerns to the office immediately.

Make sure your child gets to school between 8:47 and 8:57 a.m.

Schedule appointments with staff prior to arriving at school.

Whenever possible, try to avoid picking students up early from school.

Have your photo ID available prior to pressing the call button at the front door.

Once at the main entrance-

1) Press the call button.

2) The office staff will respond.

3) State your name and purpose for your visit.

4) Extend a photo ID towards the camera each time for recording purposes.

Once inside, go straight to the office to sign in and receive your visitor/volunteer

badge. Visibly display your badge during your entire stay at the building.

Remember to return your badge and sign out in the office at the end of your visit.

Contingency Plans Occasionally, school systems have to send students home early due to weather

conditions, power outages, boiler failure, and so on. Although we try to avoid

sending students home early, there have been times in the past and there will, no

doubt, be times in the future when this action is necessary. Please discuss this

possibility with your child(ren), and devise a plan for them to follow. Your plan

might involve going straight home and calling a parent at work. It might involve

going to the neighbor’s home, if the neighbor agrees. It might involve a high

school child staying at home with the younger children. Whatever plan is decided

upon, make sure your child(ren) know it and follow it, for their safety and your

peace of mind. Whenever possible, students at the elementary level will not be

released unless a contact has been made with a parent, guardian, or other indi-

vidual listed on their emergency card. Please continue to keep emergency contact

information up to date for all students regardless of their ages.

Healthy Habits at School

Hand Washing Please review with your child how to wash his/her hands appropriately.

Proper hand washing is the most effective tool we have for halting the spread of illnesses. General

guidelines are as follows:

Make sure you have lots of bubbles (but generally, one squirt of hand soap will do the trick! Too much

soap, improperly rinsed, dries out young skin).

Medication Policy The school district policy on medication requires a medication form (available in the office) be filled out

by a doctor and kept on file in the school office. The medication must be kept in the office also and is

administered by two school employees. The instructions must include the name of the student, name of

the medication, time to be administered, route of administration, and duration of administration. The

language also pertains to refills. Medication must be brought to the school by a parent or guardian. All

medications must be kept in a labeled container as prepared by a pharmacy or pharmaceutical company

and labeled with the dosage and frequency of administration. This language applies to refills. Please

be aware that medication includes cough drops, Tylenol, over-the-counter medication as well as any

kind of prescription medicine. Children are not allowed to have medication of any kind with them in

school. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the office for a copy of the district policy.

Hearing & Vision Screening The Oakland County Health Department will host Vision Screening for grades 1, 3, and 5 beginning

March 13, 2018 through March 21, 2018. They will also host Hearing Screening for grade K, 2, and 4

beginning April 16 2018 through April 19, 2018.

Head Lice Advisory Due to the close proximity of children in elementary school we do occasionally have students with

head lice. Head lice do not discriminate—anyone, no matter how clean or well-educated, can get

head lice. Teach your child the importance of not sharing hats, brushes, and other headpieces.

Please make a habit of checking your child’s hair regularly; you are Dolsen’s first line of defense! If

you find nits or insects in your child’s hair, it is extremely important that parents let the school

know so that we can alert other parents to check their own children.

Head lice are insects which are easily transmitted either by direct contact, or sharing clothing or

personal items like combs. They are 1/8” long and light to dark tan in color, and they can crawl

fast. The eggs, which are commonly called “nits,” are smooth, plump, and grayish white in color—

they almost look like bits of sand attached to the hair shaft. They are hard to see and remove. New-

ly laid eggs are found within ¼” from the scalp, and are often found around the nape of the neck

and behind the ears. It is the district practice that a child with head lice must be excluded from

school until one treatment at home has occurred. A student may come back to school provided the

parent/guardian documents the treatment and upon examination by the school’s designee that any

remaining nits are farther away than ¼” from the scalp. It is recommended that all nits be re-

moved.

If your child contracts head lice, your doctor or pharmacist can help. In addition, questions about

conditions such as head lice, scabies, ringworm and other minor illnesses may be routed to the

Oakland County Health Division’s Nurse On Call service. Call 1-800-848-5533 or 248-858-1406.

Nurse On Call is an immediate resource for general health questions and community resource in-

formation.

TRANSPORTATION CODE OF CONDUCT

Bus Rules must be followed for safety of students In order to guarantee all children riding the bus the safe transportation they deserve, certain rules have to be followed. Parental support is essen-tial to a safe transportation program. The prime responsibility for the application of these rules is with the parent. The schools will assist parents in any way possible. We are publishing the rules so that the district’s expectations are clear. Responsibilities of Students 1. Students must be on time as designated bus stops. Buses cannot wait, so students should leave home in time to arrive at the bus stop about 5 minutes before the bus is due. Unless there are unusual weather conditions or he bus has an emergency situation, the established schedule should be accurate. 2. Students must stay off the roadway at all times while waiting for the bus, and conduct themselves with courtesy and consideration for others. The safety and conduct of the students at a bus stop is the responsibility of the parents. 3. Students are required to cross in front of the bus when crossing a roadway, NOT in back of the bus. 4. Students must wait until the bus has come to a stop before attempting to enter or leave the bus. 5. Students should be seated immediately upon entering the bus. Students may be expected to sit three (3) in a seat. Personal belongings are to be held on the rider’s lap. Only items fitting on students’ laps will be accepted on the bus. The aisle must be kept clear. 6. No pets or other animals may be transported on the bus. 7. Students are expected to conform promptly with directions of the bus driver. 8. Students must inform the driver when absence from school is expected. 9. Students must help keep the bus clean and orderly at all times. 10. Students must report to the driver at once any damage to the bus. Any student disfiguring or mutilating a bus will be suspended from riding until a satisfactory adjustment is made. 11. Loud, boisterous, or profane languages, indecent conduct, scuffling, or throwing of object will not be tolerated. Student causing trouble after they have been warned will lose their privilege of riding the bus. 12. No windows or doors are to be opened except by permission of the driver. Students are required to enter and leave by the front door ONLY, except in case of an emergency and then the back emergency door may be used. 13. Students must keep hands and head inside the bus at all times. 14. Smoking, eating, or drinking will not be permitted on the bus. 15. Only students registered to ride the bus are permitted to ride. We do not carry a commercial license. This prohibits us from carrying students not listed on the original registration sheet. Students may not ride any other bus to homes of friends or places of employment. 16. Students must not leave the bus without the driver’s consent, except at home or at the school. 17. Students are expected to be picked up and dropped off at one (same) bus stop only. 18. Students may be assigned a seat by the bus driver. 19. Complete silence at railroad crossings is required. 20. No use of cell phones on the bus. Failure to observe bus rules may result in the issuance of a bus conduct report. Students are reminded that bus riding is a privilege. They are expected to observe bus safety rules and failure to do so may result in the bus driver issuing a bus conduct report, which will be reviewed by a school administrator. The administrator reviewing the report has the right and responsi-bility to reprimand according to the student's disciplinary history. In instances of severe bus misconduct, administrators may invoke any or all of the corrective measures listed for each offense. If a bus misconduct results in a suspension from school, the student's suspension from the bus is effective upon return to school. The following is the district procedure with regard to bus conduct reports: 1. Warning Notice: At the bus driver's discretion, and based upon the severity of the offense, issues may be addressed through verbal warnings. In these cases, a copy of the Transportation Code of Conduct may be provided to the student as a reminder of the transportation expectations. 2. 1st Conduct Report - the student receives a warning that further conduct reports could result in suspension of bus riding privileges; however, a student may be removed for 1st conduct report in case of serious offences, such as fighting. 3. 2nd Conduct Report - the student is suspended from riding the bus for five (5) school days. 4. 3rd Conduct Report - the student will be suspended from riding the bus for up to thirty (30) school days. 5. 4th Conduct Report - the student will be suspended form riding the bus for the remainder of the school year. Note: If a student’s misbehavior is serious, the bus may return to the school so that the student can be removed. If this happens, he/she will be removed form the bus a minimum of five (5) days. Bus Suspension Appeal Process- Elementary: 1. Parent/Guardian may appeal bus suspensions of less than ten (10) days to the principal. 2. Bus suspensions of ten (10) or more days shall follow the appeal process outlined below: a. If a parent/guardian disagrees with a suspension, an immediate appeal must be made to the building principal. Immediate is defined as by the end of the next school day. If the principal is not in the district, the parent will be directed to the assistant superintendent of CITA who will be the first and final administrator in the appeal process. b. If a parent/guardian disagrees with the principal’s decision, an appeal must be made to the assistant superintendent of CITA within twenty-four (24) hours of the principal’s decision. Within twenty-four (24) hours is defined as the next school day. The decision made by the assistant super-intendent of CITA is final. LUNCH Elementary students may buy lunch for $2.95 and breakfast for $1.35. Milk is

sold for $0.50. If you feel your income would qualify your student for free or re-

duced price meals, please fill out the application available in the office.

Menus are available on the slcs.us website under Departments/Food Service.

Each family has a lunch account and if you wish to put money in the account you

are able to do so by writing a check payable to SLCS or paying online. You can

pay weekly, monthly, by the semester or yearly.

We use a computerized system, via Skyward, to manage student payments for

lunches and breakfasts. The lunch accounts with SLCS are a “family” account.

Any money put into the account can be accessed by all students in the family. Al-

so, when cash is used in line, the change will be applied to the account. If the

student has a ten dollar bill for lunch, the change will be put into the account for

use in the future.

Your student’s five digit food service number will follow them year after year as

long as they are in the SLCS. Money left at the end of the year will still be there

when school starts again. You can access your student’s food service account by

logging onto the school’s website at www.slcs.us. Then choose the link for Sky-

ward Family Access. That will take you to another page where you choose Sky-

ward Family Access again.

Through Skyward, you can view your elementary aged children’s lunch accounts,

attendance, health, and demographic records. You can also select an option to re-

ceive email notifications when your food service balance is under $5.00. Last but

not least, there is a link for payments on Skyward Family Access.

Passwords and log-ins for families can be obtained by contacting the school office.

Video Surveillance and Electronic Monitoring In order to protect Board property, promote security and protect the health, wel-

fare and safety of students, staff and visitors, the Board of Education authorizes

the use of video surveillance and electronic monitoring equipment on school prop-

erty, and in school buildings and school buses. Information obtained through vid-

eo surveillance/electronic monitoring may be used to identify intruders and per-

sons breaking the law, Board policy, or the Student Code of Conduct

(i.e., it may be used as evidence in disciplinary actions and criminal proceedings).

Lunch Recess Parents, please note: Visiting parents

are not permitted on the playground

during lunch recess. This is for the

safety of your children, as well as the

safety of all of the students at Dolsen.

This is a very busy time of day, and

lunch supervisors are responsible for

monitoring all Dolsen students.

Important Information Regarding

Free/Reduced Lunch Applications

Please read the following information regarding free/reduced lunch

applications and how they affect support services for Dolsen students.

Free and reduced lunch applications must be submitted annually.

It is important that all families who qualify, or even think they may qualify

submit an application each year. These applications are used to obtain

accurate free/reduced lunch numbers. Obtaining accurate numbers is criti-

cal because they directly relate to how students at Dolsen receive addition-

al academic support services. It is important to note that additional ser-

vices are provided for students who qualify based on assessment data. This

means services benefit Dolsen students working below grade level expecta-

tions, and not exclusively students who qualify for free/reduced lunch.

Free/reduced lunch percentages are used to determine which schools in the

district are identified as Title 1 schools. Title 1 schools receive additional

funding for support staff positions. These support staff positions include

additional Reading Recovery teachers and Title 1 teachers. Reading Recov-

ery is a first grade intervention program, but Reading Recovery teachers

also conduct literacy support groups for students in other grades, based on

caseload numbers. Title 1 teachers can provide interventions services in

reading, writing, and math for students in Kindergarten through 5th grade.

Based on assessment data, they support students through push in (to the

classroom) and pull out (of the classroom) services.

In the past, Dolsen qualified for Title 1 Targeted Assistance.

Currently, Dolsen no longer qualifies.

We are including this information in order to notify parents and ensure

that all families who qualify submit their forms annually. We appreciate

your support with obtaining accurate numbers.

Forms are available in the office and can also be found on the district

website under Departments/Food Service. All applications are

confidential and can be submitted directly to Food Services if families

prefer this option.

If you have any further questions, feel free to contact Mrs. Goodemoot

directly.

Parent-Teacher Conferences During Curriculum Night teachers will post sign up sheets for parent-

teacher conferences. Fall conferences will be held in November and more

information will be included in future communications.

Dates and times to be determined (November 14 through 16th)

Please note: SLCS only hold fall conferences. If you would like to meet

with your child’s teacher throughout the year, teachers are

always available to meet by scheduling a conference.

Electronic Communication Devices The SLCS Policy Committee approved student use of Electronic Commu-

nication Devices on buses. However, if students bring an ECD on the bus,

ECDs are not permitted to be used at school. In addition, Dolsen Elemen-

tary is not responsible for any ECD that is brought to school. Should fam-

ilies choose to allow their child to use an ECD on the bus only, we encour-

age families to have a conversation with their children about appropriate

use. ECDs may not be used in school, ECDs brought to school from the

bus are secured at the families own risk, and students must adhere to the

use of appropriate content while using an ECD on the bus.

Allergies

Each year your child shares a school with several students who are

severely allergic to different food items. In an effort to provide a safe

environment for students who have food allergies, we will need your

help. At Dolsen we want to create a supportive environment for chil-

dren who are learning to manage their food allergies.

We would like encourage you to speak to your child about being sup-

portive of children with special needs, including those with food al-

lergies. We would like you to consider packing snack items that

have fewer food related allergens such as fresh fruits and vegeta-

bles. Your child’s classroom teacher will notify you if there are spe-

cific allergens that need to be avoided during snack time in the class-

room, such as nut or dairy.

Thank you for helping us create a safe learning environment for all

students.

Volunteer Appreciation Basket We would like to thank our volunteers for all that they do throughout the year to

support Dolsen students and staff. We have set up a volunteer appreciation bas-

ket in the main office to show our appreciation throughout the year. Please stop

by to pick up a little something as a token of our gratitude.

Volunteer Background Checks

The South Lyon Community School District greatly appreciates the support of

our families and the involvement of parents/guardians as volunteers through the

CHEERS program. While we welcome parent/ guardian volunteers, it is im-

portant that we follow Board Policy 9230 (District Volunteers) which states that,

“Any person who volunteers to work with the District shall be screened annually

through the Internet sites for the Sex Offenders Registry (SOR), the Internet

Criminal History Access Tool (ICHAT) criminal history records check and/or the

Offender Tracking System (OTIS), prior to being allowed to participate in any

activity or program.” This screening process is to ensure the safety and security

of our students and staff in each building.

It is also important to remind all volunteers that they shall agree to abide by all

Board Policies and District Guidelines while on duty as a volunteer. This in-

cludes, but is not limited to, following the sign-in procedures established at each

building, wearing proper identification while volunteering, maintaining confi-

dentiality of each student, remaining in a location visible to district staff when

working with students, reporting all behavior concerns to the lead teacher and/or

building principals, and refraining from disciplining or touching students in a

corrective manner.

Volunteers are covered under the District’s liability policy, but are not covered

by its health insurance policy nor are they eligible for Workers’ Compensation.

If you would like to serve as a volunteer at your child’s school, you are required

to complete the Volunteer Background Check Authorization form which can be

found on the district website www.slcs.us under Parent/Community.

This process must be repeated annually. Names of approved volunteers will be

maintained in a database and shared with building office staff and CHEERS co-

ordinators. Buildings may only utilize approved volunteers, including for the

chaperoning of field trips. Buildings will follow their own established processes

for contacting approved volunteers throughout the school year. Thank you again

for your support and willingness to serve as a volunteer with South Lyon Com-

munity Schools

Shared Involvement Process

The South Lyon Community Schools has adopted the following mission statement: In

support of our community, the mission of the South Lyon Community Schools is to pro-

vide the highest quality educational process so that all students can excel as individuals

and become productive contributing members of society.

To accomplish our mission, the South Lyon Community Schools endorses the concept of

Shared Involvement Process (SIP) as the necessary and appropriate means by which all

educational decisions of the highest quality are most likely to be achieved at all levels.

The following are examples of the many benefits of the Shared Involvement Process:

Improving the morale of the staff

Focusing accountability for decisions

Bringing resources in line with school’s goals

Nurturing and stimulating new leaders

Increasing quantity and quality of communication

Increasing ownership into decisions to be made

Placing decisions at the closest level to those affected

Promoting input of a greater and more diverse nature

So what is Shared Involvement Process (SIP)? SIP is a process for soliciting, collecting,

evaluating and using information and the expertise of educational partners for the pur-

pose of making and implementing decisions that will improve or enhance student

achievement.

The building SIP committee may implement decisions that do not impact other build-

ings in the District, do not require the expenditure of more funds than are available in

the approved budget and do not conflict with District goals, procedures, policies, collec-

tive bargaining agreements or federal or state laws and requirements.

Building Committee:

Each building will have a committee consisting of the building principal, a minimum of

two elementary teachers and, at the secondary level, a minimum of three teachers or a

ratio of 1:500 students. Teachers will be chosen in a manner acceptable to the staff. Also

on the committee will be a minimum of one support staff member and, when possible,

representation from the community. Parent representation will equal the number of

teachers and will be chosen by the SIP or by other parents in the school. At each middle

school, two eighth grade students may be members when deemed appropriate. At the

high school level, a total of four students, one from each grade, will be selected under

the direction of the student government.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the SIP are to review and/or approve, when appropriate, the

school improvement efforts, e.g., each phase of the credentialing and NCA process,

MSTEP outcomes, AYP goals, Ed. Yes/MI Plan requirements and outcomes, and school

climate and safety issues. These items will be included on the SIP agendas when appro-

priate.

Page 17: S O U T H L Y O N C O M M U N I T Y S C H O O L S 2017 Dolsen Discovery.pdfBadillo, Amani Reading Specialist A3C 8407 badilloa@slcs.us Archer, Andrea ESL A3A 2728 archera@slcs.us Crandall,

Duration of Terms

The duration of terms will be implemented to ensure continuity of membership. Pro-

spective members should be made aware that a commitment of time will be necessary to

effectively deal with these building issues and responsibilities.

How do I learn about my school’s SIP Committee?

SIP committees meet monthly, and each school’s agenda and meeting minutes are post-

ed on the South Lyon Community Schools website at www.slcs.us. Minutes are also

shared in newsletters and at PTO meetings.

The schools’ SIP committees would like to provide parents and community members the

opportunity to share questions, comments, or concerns. Feel free to contact a SIP mem-

ber or your school Principal.

The District and SIP committees encourage all members of the school community to

learn about the Shared Involvement Process and support our mission to increase

achievement for all students.
