Remember the men and women in the Armed Forces and all who protect us and put themselves in harm’s way on our behalf; may they be shielded from danger;

and for their families and loved ones. In particular, Andrew Anderson, Christopher Blasius, C. J. DelVaglio, Samantha Krom, Christian Legaspe, Steven Nolan and Jeffrey S. Wilson Jr.

Congratulations to the children of our Parish who have been diligently and enthusiastically preparing for their special day and received their First Holy Communion on Saturday.

I ask your continued prayers for them and their families as they welcome Jesus into their hearts in Holy Communion for the first time. This is such a special day and I am truly blessed to celebrate their day with them. Thank you also to Sandra Kluun, the catechists and Joe Vitti and the choir for making their day even more special.

Thank you to all who participated in the in-pew weekend for the Annual Catholic Appeal. Your pledges will help reach our goal. Thank you! Just a reminder… A gift of $100.00 is only 25 cents a day. To all who benefit from your generosity I thank you.

Continued Easter Blessings, Fr. Fred

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER "I have called you friends." Authentic friendship can seem hard to come by these days, especially in our transient society. We move away from family, change jobs, switch parishes, and end up in entirely new places with entirely new people. When we look for new friends, we all have different qualities we're looking for. While we may think of certain standards of behavior necessary to be a "good" friend, we would hardly refer to them as rules or "commandments." In fact, if a friendship or romantic relationship--new or old--becomes characterized by imposed obligations, we would rightly be suspicious. Friendships, we understand, ought to be characterized by freedom. We love the person, even sacrifice for them at times because, within ourselves, we want to maintain the friendship. So why does Jesus use the language of command as he calls the Apostles his friends? "You are my friends if you do what I command you." Jesus is radically transforming the concept of commandment. In the Jewish heritage of the Apostles, they would hear the word "command" and immediately think of the strict Levitical law and distance from God. In introducing the language of friendship, Jesus ties "commandment" to inner freedom of heart. The disciples have this freedom precisely because they know "what [the] Master is doing." Jesus has invited his followers into intimate friendship all along. He shares openly with them. He has patience with their flaws. He isn't scandalized by their failures. He celebrates their successes. We, too, have been called by love and invited into a relationship with Jesus. It is you and I that Jesus chooses and appoints. He does so personally, not from a distant mountain shrouded in clouds. This "new commandment" to "love one another" is received around the shared table in the breaking of the bread.

We are at 65% toward goal!!! The 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal is currently underway throughout the Diocese of Bridgeport. Our Appeal goal is $60,000. To date, we have raised 119 pledges in the amount of $39,065.00 bringing us to 65 percent of goal. (This amount does not include in-pew weekend pledges.) To all who have made their pledge, I thank you! During this Easter season, please consider making a pledge to the appeal to help reach our goal. A pledge of $100.00 is only 25 cents a day. Every pledge is important and needed to help reach our goal. We are hoping for increased participation. Remember… no gift is too small or insignificant. On behalf of all whom the Appeal benefits, I thank you.

Family Mass Thank You A joyful celebration was held at the 10:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday, April 29. Members of the parish pre-K, K, and first grade classes hosted the Mass assisted by members of upper grades. To honor Mary in a special way, the young parishioners processed to the sanctuary carrying flowers. After Mary was crowned with a band of flowers the children placed their flowers at Mary’s feet. We thank all of the children and their families who helped in the celebration. Also, our thanks to: Tyler Denison and Ruby Montanez, our readers; and Mia Calorossi and Nicholas Gelineau, our crowning queen and crown-bearer, respectively. We also thank the catechists, Aida Palmer, Eileen Heaphy, Carolyn McNerney and Danielle Viesto, as well as Joe Vitti and the adult choir for sharing their gifts.

First Eucharist Congratulations to the 13 young parishioners who celebrated the Sacrament of Holy Communion for the first time on Saturday, May 5, 2018. May God bless you always!

Family Scripture Reflection (from Sadlier): Reading 2 1 John 4:7-10 We can safely say that the writer of this letter has love on his mind. In fact, he uses the word in one form or another ten times. What he wants all of Jesus' followers to be absolutely certain of in their hearts is that God is love. And before we ever thought of loving God, he loved us first. It is his love in us that we share with one another. In this joyful Easter season, we are celebrating the greatest proof of God's love for all people. Question of the Week: What are the signs of God's love alive in your life?

LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK "Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love." So many people hunger for love. All of us desire to be intimately connected with others, God, and our world. Many things can work against this and cause us to feel alienated and even profoundly sad. Pope Francis tells us that our "infinite sadness can only be cured by an infinite love." We have been touched by God's love. We are called to bring that love to others so that their sadness and wounds can be healed. We must do this even for those we do not particularly like or who have hurt us. We cannot let anything stand in the way of love.
