In this issue weonce again not only celebrateour successes andaccomplishments but alsoprovide a bit of the backstories of the individualsresponsible. We are proud ofour people and invite you toread these stories and get toknow us better.

Featured on the cover arethree Hill and Levene facultymembers – Bruce Anderson,Shelagh Campbell, andAndrew Stevens –representing our primaryactivity areas of teaching andlearning, research andscholarship, and service to ourcommunities. Experientialeducation is key to the Hill | Levene School’s visionand Bruce Anderson is aleader in putting this visioninto action. Under Bruce’sleadership, Levene studentsworked with United Way ofRegina on two “live cases”where the client received realbenefits and the studentsgained real experience.Relevant research is also keyto the Hill | Levene vision.

Shelagh Campbell’s academicwork has been focused onunderstanding the world ofwork and how the quality oflife in that world can beimproved. Commitment toour communities is central towhat we do. Andrew Stevens,in addition to being anaccomplished teacher andresearcher, has deep roots incommunity involvement.Andrew has taken thisinvolvement to a new level asCity Councillor.

Students are the focus of whatwe do. Students, past andpresent, are the focus ofseveral stories in this issue.Hill School teams have animpressive track record incase competitions. We presentthe stories of our teams at the2018 Inter-CollegiateBusiness Competition (ICBC)in Kingston and at theOrganizational BehaviourCase Competition (OBCC) inToronto. Women as leaders isa theme shared by ourfeatured Hill student, OliviaArnal, and Levene student,Kirandeep Kaur. The storiesof Jason Drummond, a Hillalumnus, and Sheree Ortman,a Levene alumna, show howour graduates make adifference.

The Hill and Levene Schoolsof Business have strong ties tocommunity leaders. We arefortunate to have Dr. MuradAl-Katib as a supporter,including chairing the LeveneAdvisory Board, and he isfeatured in a story of his manyaccomplishments. Pat Youzwais completing her term as theRBC Woman Executive inResidence and her time in thisrole is profiled in anotherstory.

I am blessed to have beenpart of this great Faculty ofBusiness Administration formore than a quarter of acentury – the last year in therole of Acting Dean. It’s fittingthat I write this Dean’sMessage in Horizons becausesoon the sun will be setting onthe horizon for me. Howeverthe daily cycle also includes asun rising on the horizon – inthis case Gina Grandy whowill become the Dean of theFaculty of BusinessAdministration on July 1,2018. I’m very confident thatthe future of the Hill andLevene Schools will be in verycapable hands. We get toknow more about Gina in thisissue.

I’ll conclude with twothoughts.

I’m grateful for theopportunity to have been partof the lives of so manyfabulous students, staff,faculty, and communitypartners. We haveaccomplished much and theHill and Levene Schools havea very bright future.

Dr. Gina Grandy’s decision toapply to be Dean of BusinessAdministration at theUniversity of Regina waspartially driven by the need topractice what she teaches.

“One of my areas of researchand teaching is women inleadership,” she says. “I knowwomen have a tendency tomore often say, ‘This isn’twhat I want,’ ‘Not right now’or, ‘No, I’m not ready,’ andpass by these types ofleadership opportunities,often for very good reasons.Working with other women,talking about these types ofstatistics, and knowing howimportant it is to step forward,I realized that my actionsserve as a role model forothers. It is important to havewomen in these types ofpositions, and I feel privilegedto be able to do this.”

As Dean, she says, “I canspeak to issues that areimportant to me, and moreimportantly I can give voice tothe issues that are importantto others.” As a woman in aleadership role, she hopes shecan be “a catalyst, anintermediary, a channel, tofoster new opportunities forour students.”

Dr. Grandy’s five-yearappointment takes effect July 1. She is currently theAssociate Dean of Research &Graduate Programs, Professorin Strategy and Leadership,and RBC Women inLeadership Scholar. As acurrent faculty member,Grandy has been able to takeadvantage of an extendedtransitioning time, workingclosely with Acting Dean, Dr. David Senkow.

Ensuring that the studentexperience is of exceptionalquality, both in and out of theclassroom, has always beenimportant to Grandy and sheintends to lead as Dean withthe same intent. “With thesupport of committed facultyand staff, our studentscontinually excel at a nationallevel in case competitions andvarious other events.Enhancing what we alreadydo very well, specifically as itrelates to our academicprogramming andextracurricular possibilities toenrich the student experience,is certainly on my mind.Working closely with thebusiness and broadercommunities will be critical increating new experientiallearning opportunities and

preparing our students fortheir future careers.”

Another priority will be toassess the progress made onthe strategic plan, inparticular with regard tointernationalization. Althoughthe school has a number ofinternational partnerships, shefeels “there are a lot ofopportunities we haven’tleveraged yet for our studentsand faculty.”

Another focus will beindigenization. “We have anindigenous lead on the facultywho has done remarkablework,” Grandy notes. “Weneed to see what kind ofimpact we are making andwhere we would like to directour efforts.”

Accreditation will be apriority, not only to enhancewhat the Hill and LeveneSchools offer, but raise theirprofiles and reputations.“Accreditation is a longprocess that requires asignificant commitment by theFaculty, but it is important forour sustainability.” Grandynotes that the University ofSaskatchewan’s recentaccreditation by AACSB “putsa certain urgency” on the

U of R. Grandy also believesthat doing more to profile theresearch excellence of facultymembers is part of building astronger regional, national andinternational reputation.

A dedicated building for theHill and Levene School is alsoon her list. Space is always at apremium, and a new buildingwould mean more space fortheir growing student groupsand activities and to bring thecommunity to students. Itwould also free up space inthe Education Building forother Faculties. She notes,“such an endeavour will onlycome to realization with thesupport of our partners in thecommunity.”

In many ways, Grandy says,her job is to be an advocateand champion of the many“excellent, amazing things”happening within the Facultyof Business Administration.

“Part of the reason I wantedto take this role is that thereare fantastic students, faculty,and staff and a very supportivebusiness community,” sheconcludes. “I feel grateful andproud that they selected me tobe their champion in movingtheir school where they wantit to go.” H

Hill students have numerousopportunities to competeagainst students from otherbusiness schools, and haveenjoyed much success overthe past six months. Here aresome of the highlights:

Enactus Regina: Under theguidance of faculty advisorDr. Lisa Watson, EnactusRegina placed first in League Bof the Capital One FinancialEducation Challenge at theEnactus Regional Expositionin Calgary in March 2018.They placed for their projectcalled Financial Foundations,which is a project that isdesigned to teach financialliteracy to high schoolstudents in an engaging andhands-on way.

This is the first time that theteam has placed first in achallenge at regionals. Theteam will now be one of fourteams representing the Westin this national challenge atthe Enactus NationalExposition in Toronto in May.

Hill Case Competition:Award recipients for the HillBusiness Students’ Society’sHill Case Competition inNovember 2017 were asfollows:

• 1st Place from the HillSchool of Business: KendallJohnson, Rebecca Taylor,Kaylyn Veresh, PaigeZiemer

• 2nd Place from the HillSchool of Business: CassidyRath, Jessica Tresek

ICBC: Under the guidance offaculty advisor Dr. PaulSinclair, the Hill ICBCAccounting team of OliviaArnal and Amanda Kostur,

with faculty coach NolaJoorisity, made it to the finalround of the Inter-CollegiateBusiness Competition (ICBC)at Queen’s University inKingston, Ontario based ontheir submissions in thepreliminary round in lateOctober 2017.

Olivia and Amanda took homefirst place in the ICBC finalround in January 2018.

OBCC: Under the guidanceof faculty coach Justin Feeneystudents from the HillHuman Resources Clubattended the the 13th AnnualOrganizational Behavior CaseCompetition (OBCC) at theTed Rogers School ofManagement in Toronto inJanuary 2018. The Hill teamof Francis Odum, ShafeekaSayyid, Haley Stearns, andHayley Usherwood won firstplace at the competition. Thejudges unanimously voted theHill team first place ahead of11 other schools. This is thefirst time the Hill School haswon the competition.

As the end of her term as thefirst RBC Woman Executivein Residence approaches, PatYouzwa notes two thingsabout her appointment: it’sgone by very quickly, and it’sbeen a challenge, as the firstperson in the role, to craftinitiatives that would have animpact and be meaningful forthe Hill and Levene Schools’students.

It’s a challenge she’s met well.She’s given fourteenpresentations to classes,ranging from a second-yearbusiness class to an ExecutiveMBA class. She’s alsoorganized two major events: afall screening of the filmDream, Girl, a documentaryabout inspiring and ambitiousfemale entrepreneurs, and,this spring, a breakfastmeeting featuring guestspeaker Deborah M. Kolb,Ph.D., the Deloitte EllenGabriel Professor for Womenin Leadership at SimmonsCollege of Management, Co-Director of the Negotiationsin the Workplace Project atthe Program on Negotiation atHarvard Law School, and anadjunct professor at INSEAD.Both events were followed bypanel discussions, the firstfeaturing womenentrepreneurs, and thesecond, three women inexecutive leadership roles,who spoke about their own

experiences.Youzwa says her classpresentations, rather thanbeing academic, were a wayfor her to provide herpersonal perspective as anexecutive, “to engage studentsand give them an opportunityto talk to me about what myexperiences have been, andwhat might be useful to themas they plan their owncareers.”

The screening of Dream, Girl,drew 150 people, and verypositive feedback. “Peoplefound it very interesting andengaging,” Youzwa says. Sheadds she was very pleased tosee many students attendingin addition to people from thecommunity.

For the March 22 breakfastwith Dr. Deborah Kolb,Youzwa chose both thespeaker and the panelists. “Ihad an advisory committee, agroup of volunteers, whom Imet with to seek their adviceon what type of initiativeswould be of value to people inthe business community,government officials, students,and faculty. One of the topicsidentified was second-generation bias inorganizations, and its impacton leadership roles forwomen—and how womencan, understanding this,

negotiate conditions of theirwork, and help changeorganizational culture as well.”

Second-generation bias,Youzwa explains, are policies,values, and attitudes thatappear neutral, but effect menand women differently: suchas a woman not beingconsidered for a projectbecause of the assumption shewouldn’t be interested inextended travel, having ayoung family at home.

At the breakfast, Kolb gave amore down-to-earth exampleof second-generation bias: anorganization focus on stand-up meetings, which fails torecognize how thatdisadvantages women wearinghigh heels or who are short.

Basing her talk on her 2015book Negotiating at Work,Kolb advised woman (andmen, too) how they caneffectively negotiate fordesired jobs, support,resources, credit, newopportunities, work schedule,or change. Tips includedknowing your value, andfinding ways to make it visible;assessing your leverage, beingclear on what happens if adeal can’t be reached (“theiralternative may be worse thanyours,” Kolb pointed out);enlisting allies; buildingrapport; framing your requestin terms of what’s good for theorganization; and beingwilling to offer something inexchange for what you want.She also talked about how todeal with resistance andoffered ways to get a potentialagreement back on track.

The panel discussion featuredAndrea Robertson, Presidentand CEO of STARS; KimUlmer, RBC RegionalPresident for Manitoba,Saskatchewan, and NorthWestern Ontario; and CathyWarner, Marketplace Leaderfor Deloitte Saskatchewan.Each provided her owninsights into negotiation andwork-life balance.

Asked for a concluding nuggetof advice, Robertson offeredtwo: get your ego out of theway, and realize you can’t be

successful unless you aredoing something deeplymeaningful to you.

Warner’s advice was that“understanding the otherperson’s perspective is key,”because negotiation is allabout getting to the “win-win,” where everybody issatisfied with the outcome.

Ulmer concluded with fiveguidelines: know your worth,know your facts and business,speak with determinationabout them, know when topush, and know when to letgo.

For Youzwa, Kolb’s talk was “away to empower women toposition themselves tosucceed.”

With Youzwa’s term windingdown, it’s time to look aheadto her replacement, expectedto be announced this spring.“Pat has made greatcontributions as the inauguralRBC Woman Executive inResidence, and the Hill andLevene Schools of Businesslook forward to building onher efforts,” Acting DeanDavid Senkow says.

“Whoever comes in after meneeds to work closely with theDean and the business schoolto ensure the program is well-articulated and understood,and that initiatives insure thesuccess of this program intothe future,” Youzwa says. Inparticular, she’d like to seemore initiatives that involvedirect student engagementand participation.

Youzwa lauds the generoussupport of the Royal Bank ofCanada. “There are funds toexpand the program,” shesays. “The opportunity existsto build something evenbigger and wider into thefuture because of theirgenerosity.”

“There is interest in havingexposure to people who haveactual experience in executiveroles,” she concludes. “I’vebeen really pleased to be ableto share some of mine.”

For the first time in 13 yearsof competition, a team fromthe Hill School of Businesshas won the annualOrganizational BehaviourCase Competition. The eventtook place at RyersonUniversity in Toronto inJanuary. Making theachievement even sweeter,the judges were unanimous invoting the team of HayleyStearns, Haley Usherwood,Shafeeka Sayyid and FrancisOdum in first place, bestingteams from 11 other schools,including Richard Ivey, theUniversity of TorontoScarborough campus andConcordia University, thedefending champion for theprevious seven years.

The four Hill students beganpreparing for the competitionin October 2017, holdingweekly four-hour practicesessions examining businesscases and problems. Theyinvited various HumanResources professionals andtheir faculty coach, JustinFeeney, Assistant Professor inOrganizational Behaviour, toprovide feedback during thepractice sessions. During

those gatherings, and even thenight before the competition,Feeney encouraged the teammembers to discuss how the“big picture” principles oforganizational behaviour andthe “nuts and bolts” of humanresources intersect. Teamleader Francis Odum says thisapproach was the basis oftheir strategy for success.

“We mastered HR principlesand theories; we had amechanical process fordeconstructing business cases,and distributed roles todifferent team members,” heexplains.

Feeney agrees that theformula was effective,observing that the Hill School

team was the only one tosuccessfully identify howtalent management solutionscould be used in examiningthe case used in thecompetition. The other teamsfocused exclusively onorganizational behaviourtopics, he noted.

All four team membersagreed that participating inthe competition was a greatexperience, opening upopportunities to meet industryprofessionals and otherstudents from across thecountry, and bringing with itthe realization that they hadbecome better students. Theyalso expressed gratitude forthe support they receivedfrom the Faculty for travelcosts and the coaching theyreceived.

Shafeeka Sayyid, a third-yearmajor in Management,observed that the Hill teamwas up against some verylarge and prestigiousuniversities, “… and beingfrom a smaller region, it wasdefinitely intimidating. Onething I took away from theexperience was that you

Delayed flights, lost luggageand the resulting sleepdeprivation were not enoughto keep Hill School ofBusiness fourth-year studentsOlivia Arnal and AmandaKostur from taking first placein the Accounting category atthe Inter-Collegiate BusinessCompetition (ICBC) held inJanuary at Queen’s Universityin Kingston, Ontario.

ICBC began in 1978, and isCanada’s oldest and longest-running undergraduatebusiness competition. It nowannually brings together morethan 170 student teams fromover 40 business schools inCanada and beyond for eightcompetitive events. Thecompetition is a two-stageprocess: during thepreliminary round held inOctober teams are presentedwith a complex businessproblem. Their writtenanalysis and recommendationsare reviewed, and the top fiveor six teams in each of theeight competitive events areinvited to the final round,where they are given five anda half hours to prepare theirsolutions to the business case.

A panel of judges made up ofindustry leaders and eventsponsors chooses the top threefinalists.

Arnal and Kostur are among19 teams from the Hill Schoolto make it to the final roundsince 2010. Arnal says she washooked on the ICBCcompetition after making it tothe final round as a member ofthe Marketing team in 2016.(That year the Hill SchoolHuman Resources team alsoadvanced, and finished first.)

Arnal and Kostur may havehad an edge since they hadrecently spent 30 days in closequarters together during oneof the school’s study abroadprograms in Paris, in June2017. It also helped that thetwo began preparing for ICBCas soon as classes began lastSeptember, and that theirstrengths complemented eachother. “I’m more of a numbersperson” says Kostur, “so I did alot of the calculations andexhibits, while Olivia is verygood with strategy andconsulting, so she focused on alot of the overarching businessconcerns. Together, we make awell-rounded team.”

Preparation for thecompetition included somelate nights, poring overtextbooks, and a lot ofguidance and feedback fromtheir faculty coach, NolaJoorisity, as they tackled foursimulations and rehearsedtheir presentations.

Later, at a victory celebrationback in Regina, Joorisitydescribed Amanda and Oliviaas poised, polished, articulate,professional and engaging intheir presentation. “Theydidn’t just do the accountingnumbers, but also consideredthe marketing, humanresources, operations andstrategy.” Their performanceachieved “celebrity status” inKingston, she adds, with bothof them identified as topcandidates by some of thesponsoring companies at theevent.

After graduating, Kostur willbegin her career withaccounting and consultingservices provider Virtus Group

(with plans to pursue her CPAdesignation). After assessingseveral offers, Arnal chose tolaunch her career as aRelationship Manager Traineewith Innovation Credit Union.Both agree their ICBCexperience had boosted theirconfidence, and helped themrefine their presentation andproblem-solving skills, insightsthat are similar to those ofalumna Katie Osborne(BAdmin ’12), who was amember of the Hill SchoolMarketing team that placedthird at ICBC in 2011.Osborne - now an AccountPlanner at Bravo Tangoadvertising agency in Regina -says the experience ofproblem-solving underpressure at ICBC helps her inher day-to-day work withclients. “I feel fortunate tohave had the chance toparticipate, and I wouldrecommend students take thetime - and put in the effort - tobe a part of this wonderfulprogram,” Osborne says.

You might think it odd that apolice officer with almost 25years of experience wouldreturn to university for amaster’s degree in business.Inspector Sheree Ortman ofthe Regina Police Service, whoobtained her Masters ofAdministration in Leadershipfrom the Kenneth LeveneGraduate School of Business in2015, begs to differ.

Ortman joined the PoliceService while pursuing anundergraduate degree inphysical activity studies. At thetime, she was one of onlythirteen women on theService. Today, about twenty-two percent of the policeofficers are women.

Among other things, Ortman isa Critical IncidentCommander, overseeing all ofthe emergency services teams(SWAT, Crisis Negotiators, theExplosives Disposal Unit)when situations like hostage-takings and armed andbarricaded persons arise.

Ortman decided to pursue adegree at the LeveneGraduate School as she movedup in rank and found herself inpositions focused on strategicplanning. “At the time, therewere limited professionaldevelopment opportunities in

the Police Service with regardto leadership. I thought it wasimportant, if I was going tooversee a number of differentsections, to grow moreacademically: to understandhow to motivate employees,empower them, and help themreach their fullest potential.”

She took two classes a yearover five years. “As a CriticalIncident Commander who issubject to call-out 24 hours aday, I thought that would bemanageable.” She achieved therank of Inspector in 2012, andin 2015, received her Mastersdegree.

“Policing is driven on the backsof our employees,” Ortmannotes. “It’s a very difficultoccupation and workenvironment. We have highexpectations of our officers,who face traumatic eventsevery day, work with very littleto no supervision, and workshift work, twelve hours at atime, sometimes fourteen orfifteen hours. In addition,because of the confidentialnature of their work, it is oftendifficult for officers to get theemotional and psychologicalsupport that they need. It wasimportant for me to continueto grow and learn what I coulddo to help them meetorganizational and personal

expectations and keep themhealthy.”

Her classes reinforced analready existing interest indiversity. Her fellow studentsnot only came from manydifferent occupations, but frommany different countries. “Itreally did expand myperspective on how to look at aproblem from differentviewpoints, and to value thoseviewpoints.” She also found itenlightening to getperspectives on issues from anon-police viewpoint. “Idiscovered there weresolutions from other sectorsthat we could utilize. Wesometimes miss these solutionsbecause we tend to narrow ourfocus and pigeonhole ourselvesinto the police environment.”

Today, she conducts workshopsin diversity, unconscious bias,and inclusion with SandraSteen, one of her instructors(in human resourcemanagement) at the LeveneGraduate School. “BecauseI’ve lived some of thechallenges, I can understand alittle more clearly some of theobstacles diverse employeesface.”

She also conducts leadershipworkshops focused on suchtopics such as problem-solvingand decision-making.

Her master’s program alsoemphasized for her theimportance of teamwork. “As aCritical Incident Commander,you manage a number ofhighly specialized teams.You’re dependent on theirinput, feedback, and opinionswhen it comes to solving highlystressful and volatile situations.Your frontline employees arethe ones closest to the work.They can offer you most of theinsight and potential solutions.As a leader, you should listenmore and talk less.”

Another advantage of abusiness degree for a policeofficer? “There’s a businessside to policing: budgets,strategic objectives, trainingissues, human resourceissues…aside from my trainingas a Critical IncidentCommander, a large majorityof my responsibilities arestrategic rather thanoperational.”

Ortman highly recommendsthe Levene program. “If youstop growing, you stopimproving,” she says. “I thinkeveryone should takeadvantage of opportunities togrow and expand theirexperiences and knowledge.”

Kirandeep Kaur grew up inIndia, and has lived in Canadafor the past seven years,leaving her well positioned forher capstone research projectas an EMBA student in theKenneth Levene GraduateSchool of Business. For herEMBA capstone project, Kaurchose to explore how theinfluences of nationality,culture and ethnicity mightaffect the emergence ofwomen leaders in India andCanada.

Kaur completed herundergraduate degree inComputer Science andEngineering in her home stateof Punjab, in northern India, in2010. After graduating shedecided to move away fromhome, taking a post-graduatediploma in WirelessTelecommunications fromHumber College in Toronto.She landed a job with WindMobile in Edmonton, butfound that Saskatchewan’sImmigrant Nominee Programoffered a quicker path to awork permit with residencyoptions, so she moved toRegina. While studying for herEMBA at the Levene Schoolshe also works as Director ofHomelessness Partnering andAdministration with YMCARegina.

“My cousins in India tell me Iam a role model,” Kaur says,

“but in my opinion I’m notdoing anything special. I askedmyself, ‘Why is this such a bigdeal?’, and that led me toinvestigate factors affecting theemergence of female leadersin Canada and India.”

Kaur developed fourhypotheses about womenleaders in the two countries,and adopted a qualitativeapproach to empiricallyinvestigate these hypotheses.“My perception is thatculturally, Canada is moreencouraging of female leadersthan India, and that Canadiansrespond more liberally towardthem than Indians,” Kaurexplains. “I also proposed thatethnicity and culturedetermine a person’sleadership style, regardless ofnationality, and that femaleleaders in Canada tend to bemore direct and authoritativethan in India, due to culturaldifferences.”

The process of tracking down12 to 15 willing interviewees ineach country revealed amarked cultural difference.Cold calling women leaders inCanada worked well inrecruiting participants, but didnot work in India. Recruitingparticipants there required herto rely on family networks andreferrals. Based on the small

sample size, she alsoconcluded that female leadersare more approachable inCanada, are represented over agreater age spread (almost 60per cent between 46 and 75),and are working in a widervariety of occupations. InIndia, such women tend to bean emergent group between18 to 45 years of age (three-quarters of participants), andconcentrated in academics,banking and insurance,reflecting the prestigeassociated with working in amore secure, air-conditionedoffice environment.

Authority and power dynamicsemerged as one of the maintopics in the interviews,revealing that ethnicity andculture do influence leadershipstyles: most of the Indianwomen leaders reflected traitsof a more authoritative style,while all of the Canadianwomen interviewed mostregularly reflected acollaborative style. One Indianparticipant told Kaur how styleinfluences perception: “Ifsomeone doesn’t haveauthority, they are not a leader;they are just a manager.”

Assessing her project, Kaursays having the opportunity tolisten to the experiences oftalented leaders was the most

rewarding part, emphasizingfor her the importance ofmentors in one’s professionallife. Learning about thechallenges these leaders facedas women, and how theyovercame those challenges alsohelped her to map out her nextresearch goals. “Earning aPh.D. has been a dream sinceI was a teenager,” Kaur says,“and this project broughtclarity to my thoughts onfurther research into women inleadership roles.”

Jason Drummond was bornand raised in Regina—andborn and raised to be anentrepreneur.

His father, Gary Drummond,was a local lawyer who startedseveral businesses: amongothers, he was co-founder andpresident of Direct Energy, apublic utility company thatultimately sold to a Britishconglomerate, and formerpart-owner and president ofhockey operations for theArizona Coyotes.

Jason played basketball for theUniversity of Regina whileobtaining his Bachelor ofAdministration, graduating in2003. “It’s given me a goodstrong base, an ability tounderstand general businesspractices and challenges,” hesays of his degree. He alsolearned a lot playingbasketball, “competing, beingchallenged, losing andwinning, playing with diversegroups of people.”

After a couple of years as ajunior analyst with PFMCapital, he started workingwith his father, in real estateand energy. Over time, hefocused on managing a

diversified investment portfoliowith investments all over thecountry. In about 2012 hestarted to put more focus onSaskatchewan and the Reginaarea.

Drummond is a partner inQueen City Sports andEntertainment Group, whoown the Regina Pats HockeyClub, and is a managingdirector of York PlainsInvestment Corp., Leo’s Group(which owns the Leopold’sTavern and Victoria’s Tavernpubs in Regina), and isinvolved in Green Acre CapitalFund, a private equity fundfocused on the legalizedcannabis industry.

Leopold’s Tavern came aboutfive years ago because, Jasonsaid, he and some friends feltthere was a lack of places inRegina for like-minded peoplewho wanted to hang out. “Wewanted to open somethingsmall and cozy. It didn’t cost alot and we were prepared forfailure. People told us itwouldn’t work because of thelocation, lack of parking andour lack of experience. Nextthing you know we were hiringmore staff.” There are nowthree Leopold’s in Regina, two

in Saskatoon, one in Calgary,and one planned for Winnipeg.

The ownership interest in thePats made sense forDrummond because he playedhockey himself for ten years(though not at a high level).He saw an opportunity to helpcreate a good experience forRegina’s fans. “It’s been a reallyfun experience, in particularseeing the city rally around theteam last year in the playoffs.”

York Plains InvestmentCorporation was born in 201l.With his partner Shawn Dymin Toronto, Drummond isfocusing a lot of York’sattention on Saskatchewan.One project, opening thissummer, is a 15,000-square-foot co-work space on BroadStreet, called Path Cowork,connected to the DoubleTreeHotel. “The idea is, you get outof a traditional sort of office,where there are closed doorsand plenty of walls. It’s moreopen, more casual, more of acommunity. You shareamenities and resources.Hopefully you share someideas and get your business toa better place in thatenvironment.”

Drummond says in the pastfew years he’s made aconscious decision to seekopportunity in Saskatchewan.“I think we realized we caninfluence things here, we havea finger on the pulse, weunderstand what this provinceneeds and doesn’t need.”

Drummond has six children,ranging in age from seven tonineteen. “When I was thatage, people were leaving theprovince. I want my kids tofinish their school, high school,university, or trade school inSaskatchewan. I’d like forthem to have that choice toleave if they want, but also tohave the choice to stay herebecause there is opportunity,exciting things they can workon, a career they can pursue.”

Ultimately, he says, “I wouldlike to see the province knownas very entrepreneurial. I thinkwe are, but historically wehaven’t celebrated thatenough. It would be good forthe province if we got over thatand owned the fact there’s a lotof opportunity here, and lot ofsmart people.”

As she prepares to graduatefrom the Hill School ofBusiness, Olivia Arnal knowsshe took a risk four years agoby applying only to theUniversity of Regina, but she isabsolutely certain it was theright move.

“I was so impressed with theUniversity of Regina, whichsent recruiters right to ourschool (a K-12 school withabout 100 students in Eastend,Saskatchewan) for one-on-oneconversations with us aboutthe programs offered,” sheexplains. “Also, the Hill Schooloffers a collaborative programwith the University ofSaskatchewan that allowsbusiness students to transitioninto the Law program thereafter three years. Law was myoriginal goal going intouniversity, so this program wasa large factor in my choice ofschools.”

Arnal’s experiences, however,encouraged her to re-directher career path from law to thebusiness program at the U of R, including some verypersonal reasons. In recentyears Olivia and her familyhave faced two profoundtragedies: she lost an older

brother, Blake, in a farmaccident a few years ago, andyounger brothers Lyndon andSean in another farm accidentjust weeks before she was toenter the Hill School in 2014.It was a vulnerable time forher, but the first weekreassured her that she’d madethe right choice.

“Being from a small town I wastold no one would care who Iwas,” Arnal recalls, “but this isnot true. Every singleprofessor, teaching assistantand staff member absolutelycares. If it had not been for thesupporting and caring facultyin the Hill School I would nothave made it through the firstsemester, let alone a degree.”She fell in love with the school,and with business, and realizedthat three years was not goingto be enough.

Arnal was one of 14 Hillstudents who spent June 2017studying in Paris. “I neverthought I could take off amonth of work to travel, butParis was life-changing; itchanged me as a businessstudent and as a person.” Shehas also participated inmentorship programs offeredby the Hill Business Students

Society and Hill School, whichenabled her to connect withbusiness leaders, an experienceshe says, “… absolutelychanged my perception ofbusiness and the world. Iwould call mentorships likethis a must for futurestudents.”

Besides emotional support,Arnal also points to thefinancial help she has received,including the Paul and CarolHill Scholarship in BusinessEthics, a Most PromisingStudent scholarship funded byU of R retirees, and aSaskatchewan Chamber ofCommerce scholarship. In thespirit of “pay it forward”, shewas a founder and is a directorfor the Arnal Boys MemorialBursary for Young Farmers,which now distributes more

than $50,000 annually, andcontinues to grow.

“I have to credit some of thesuccess of this bursary to theprofessors and mentors I havehad, for the great advice andknowledge they’ve given me toapply to this bursary, which isso close to my heart.”

As she neared the end of herfinal semester, Arnalconsidered job offers fromseveral companies, and did notbase her decision on money,paid overtime or vacation days.“Not only has the Hill Schoolenabled all of the opportunitiesthat resulted in job offers,”Arnal observes, “but it has alsotaught me the value in aligningvalues and morals with thecompany you choose to workfor.” At the end of herdecision-making process, Arnalchose to become aRelationship Manager Traineewith Innovation Credit Union.

With success comesrecognition, and for MuradAl-Katib, CEO and Presidentof AGT Food and Ingredients,2017 brought a bumper cropof global, national and localhonours and awards. Theseincluded receiving the OsloBusiness for Peace Award, theEY World Entrepreneur ofthe Year Award, appointmentas Chair of the federalgovernment’s National Agri-Food Strategy Roundtable,and receiving theSaskatchewan Order of Meritand an Honorary Doctoratefrom the University of Regina.

All of the honours he hasreceived, Al-Katib explains,stem from what he calls the“compassionate upbringing”he received from his parents,growing up in Davidson,Saskatchewan. His fatherFatih served as a family doctorin the small community, andhis mother Feyhan, less thanten years after arriving thereknowing no English, becameonly the second woman inSaskatchewan to be elected tothe council of a RuralMunicipality. She later servedas Mayor of Davidson for nineyears.

“Growing up in Davidson Iwas aware of the importanceof agriculture, and familiar

with rural life,” Al-Katib says,“but my mother and fatheralso told my siblings and Ithere was a bigger world outthere.” Perhaps because ofthis combination ofinfluences, Al-Katib says theidea of creating jobs in ruralSaskatchewan had been in hisblood for a long time beforehe left his position with theSaskatchewan Trade andExport Partnership to create alentil processing company,Saskcan Pulse Trading, whichlater became AGT.

From his company’s modestbeginnings - including goingdoor-to-door persuadingfarmers to grow the red lentilsmost in demand in globalmarkets - Al-Katib has ledAGT to become a publicly-traded $2 billion-a-yearcompany employing about2,200 employees, includingapproximately 650 in

Saskatchewan. His efforts inopening new and emergingmarkets have helped pulsesbecome an integral part ofSaskatchewan’s economy,reflecting the company motto:From Producer to the World.

Al-Katib received the OsloBusiness for Peace Award -along with Elon Musk, by theway - for his advocacy forsustainable agriculturalpractices, and for an initiativeto deliver 4.5 million cartonsof staple foods - through theRed Cross and Red Crescent -to Syrian refugees. Theinitiative provided 700 millionmeals to refugees in 2016. “Iwas deeply touched to begiven the award by a Syrianrefugee,” Al-Katib notes. Thejudges for the 2017 EY WorldEntrepreneur of the YearAward also recognized hissupport for sustainableagriculture and what he calls“compassionateentrepreneurialism.” In a way,he muses, he is not worthy ofthe awards, because hebelieves the concept of socialentrepreneurship is outdated.To him, it is a necessity. “If we(business leaders) don’t do it,we are in trouble,” he says.“In the end consumers willdemand social corporateresponsibility.”

Closer to home, Al-Katib hasserved for four years as chairof the Advisory Board for theLevene Graduate School ofBusiness, a group of businessand community leaders thatprovides information andguidance to help the schooladvance its strategy anddirection. As for the honorarydegree he received from theUniversity of Regina in 2017,the phone call cameunexpectedly from PresidentVianne Timmons on a Sundaymorning, on what became forhim a very emotional day.

Dr. Andrew Stevens is both anAssociate Professor in theFaculty of BusinessAdministration and representsWard 3 on Regina CityCouncil: an unusualcombination, yet a natural onefor Stevens, who has a longhistory of communityinvolvement.

Stevens was born inSaskatoon, where his fatherworked in construction andhis mother for Federated Co-operatives. In the early1990s, with the constructionindustry in a slump, the familymoved to British Columbia.Stevens returned to attend theUniversity of Saskatchewan,where he studied sociologyand, in his fourth year, met hiswife, Jennifer Richards.

After graduating in 2003, heearned his Master’s (in 2006)and his Ph.D. (in 2011) atQueen’s University. “It waseye-opening for me. Therewere people from all overCanada, with totally differentlife experiences, and Queen’shas a history of communityengagement.” While there, hewas elected president of theSociety of GraduateProfessional Students.

With his Ph.D. in his pocket,he started looking for work—

and ended up at theUniversity of Regina, eventhough, “It was a differentworld: I’m from sociology, thiswas a faculty of businessadministration.” But he foundthe faculty both encouragingand very community-involved.“That’s part of the social fabricof the U of R. You couldn’t askfor a better workplace.”

He became involved in thecommunity himself, servingon executive boards for theCanadian Centre for PolicyAlternatives, BriarpatchMagazine, the UnemployedWorkers Help Centre, theRegina and District LabourCouncil, and the University ofRegina Faculty Association,and volunteering with theRegina Open Door Society.He didn’t pay too muchattention to municipal politics,although he heard good thingsabout Shawn Fraser, the CityCouncillor for Ward 3, “themost historically anddemographically rich part oftown,” as Stevens says, whosepeople have “a more urbanperspective” and “wantRegina to be more than just abig prairie town.”

When Fraser decided not torun again, people startedasking Stevens if he would. “Isaid no a bunch of times,” he

said. But eventually, he saidyes.

“I saw the city as a kind of ablank slate. The economy wascresting. I thought, ‘There’slots that we can do here, a lotof hunger for newperspectives.’”

With the help of a“tremendous support group,”he put together a platform,ran—and won. “Since then,it’s been trying to work on andsharpen those promises intodeliverable action.”

Stevens says he’s learned newthings about policies, housing,and labour relations while onCouncil, all of which tie intohis research interests, whichinclude the sociology of work,labour studies, and industrialrelations.

One thing that has struck himis how fast-paced it is. “You

make decisions over theweekend with four or fiveyears of history. A lot of it’s onyour own shoulders to figure itout.”

Nor can you make everyonehappy. “A decision thatpleases one infuriates another.People are quick to judgebased on a headline. You can’tcontrol every messagebecause every message hastwenty different interpreters.”Still, he says, “I like howpassionate people can be, howinterested in improving theirlives. It’s an opportunity forme to ask what they thinkshould happen.”

Last August Stevens’s six-year-old son Logan was diagnosedwith cancer. Stevens,determined to spend as muchtime with his son as needed,almost resigned, but thanks tosupport from colleagues andpeople in the community,decided to stay.

“I thought, ‘If I’m going tostick around, I need to dothings that will leave a positivemark,’” he says. “In the longrun I’d like to make this city,with others, a better place.”

Dr. Shelagh Campbell haslived and worked acrossCanada, and everywhere hasbeen struck by one notion:“People spend a lot of theirlife preparing for work,traveling to and from work,and spending time at theirjobs, and an awful lot of thosepeople are dissatisfied andunhappy.”

That realization has becomethe focus of her academicresearch. “I was prompted togo and learn more about howpeople come together in work,and what can be done toimprove the quality of thatlife.”

Campbell, born in Labrador,grew up there and in thedistrict of Ungava in northernQuebec, traditional territoryof the Cree, Innu, andNaskapi Nations. “Coming toRegina, much later in life, waslike coming home in manyways, because we’re veryaware of, and interact with,indigenous people here in thecontext of traditionalhomelands.” Also, she adds,“The weather here is just likethe weather there.”

Campbell earned herBachelor of Commerce(Honours), from Queen'sUniversity in 1984, and wentto work as an auditor for the

National Bank of Canada,traveling coast to coast. It wasvisiting a lot of differentworkplaces and speaking to alot of different workers thatled her back to school: shereceived a Master’s ofIndustrial Relations from theUniversity of Toronto in 1990.

Over the next few years,Campbell says, she worked inmining, packaged goods,health care, education, andgovernment: “Just about everyindustry except broadcasting.”

While she was responsible forspecial initiatives for the NovaScotia government, CrownProsecutors in the provinceeffectively unionized. “I wasthe point person on themanagement side to negotiatetheir first formal, structuredagreement.” Those intense,difficult negotiations helpedmotivate her to go back toschool for her Ph.D. inManagement, which shereceived from St. Mary’sUniversity in 2011.

“Why are people in an eliteprofession, self-governed,looking to collective action tomeet their unmet need?” shewondered.

Much of her subsequentresearch has similarly lookedat professionals’ relationship

with labour activism andunionization. With colleaguesin China, for example, she hasstudied the effect on auditorsin that country of the movetoward a market economy, abig ideological change forcingprofessional bodies to catchup quickly.

As a co-researcher with theCentre de rechercheinteruniversitaire sur lamondialisation et le travail,Campbell (along with manyothers) has received fundingthrough the Social Sciencesand Humanities ResearchCouncil of Canada (SSHRC)to conduct research oninstitutional experimentationin the world of work. “It’sabout innovation, butinnovation from a humanperspective,” Campbell says.“I’m interested in how peopleexist inside traditionalstructures but innovate tomeet new needs.”

Always interested inconnecting her research to thecommunity, Campbell hasshared research findings withthe Canadian Association ofCrown Counsel andconducted professionaldevelopment sessions forthem. It was while she wasdoing a post-doc study intothe working conditions ofpublic-sector lawyers that the

job at the University of Reginacame up. She liked theinstitution, her colleagues,and the way the Faculty isstructured. “It was a reallygood fit for me,” she says.

Several new instructors werehired at about the same timein 2012, forming a kind of“cohort” within the Faculty:intriguing to Campbell,because, “I’m interested inhow informal groups coalesce,how they create identities.”

It’s great to live in anoccupational community likethe Faculty of BusinessAdministration, sheconcludes. “Your colleagueshelp you stay focused andmove things forward. We havea wonderful atmosphere herein our faculty for that kind ofcollaboration and mutualsupport.”

Nineteen students in aLevene GSB consulting classhave completed two “realworld” projects for the UnitedWay of Regina (UWR). The“live” cases are examples of agrowing emphasis onexperiential education at boththe Hill and Levene Schools,with the vision to be the mostexperiential business schoolsin Canada, according to BruceAnderson, Instructor inStrategy and Policy, who isleading the consulting course.

Anderson had previously used“live” cases in strategy andentrepreneurship courses,often having students analyzea case written about a localbusiness, and then inviting thefeatured business leader tothe class for a discussion.Applying this approach, thestudents integrate theirclassroom learning into a realworld example of how workhappens and build their softskills, such as communication,he adds.

Organizations are delighted towork with the students,Anderson explains, in part, ofcourse, because “free” isattractive; but moreimportantly because of thestudents’ independence,strong research skills, andtheir fresh perspective, points

echoed by Amanda Lanoway,Director of Engagement forUWR, and Judy Shum, theProject Lead for theexpansion of the 211Saskatchewan initiative.(Saskatchewan 211 is a web-based information and referralsystem listing thousands ofcommunity and social servicesavailable across the province,being developed by theUnited Way organizations inSaskatoon and Regina).

Before the course began,United Way CEO RobynEdwards-Bentz and Andersonmet to identify a suitablebusiness problem and adesired outcome for theproject. Edwards-Bentz notesthat the students in the classreflect current or potentialdonors and volunteers, whichhelped in determining thescope of the projects put tothem.

“We identified two priorityareas for them to study andprovide feedback: to improveour communications toencourage giving amongyounger and more mobiledonors, and to increaseawareness among those inneed, and other referralagencies, of the benefits of theSaskatchewan 211 initiative,”Edwards-Bentz says. Five

UWR staff members thenprovided the students with anoverview of the organizationand high-level informationabout the business case,followed by a question-and-answer session. Studentsorganized themselves intoworking groups, with onemember in each groupappointed to serve as theirprimary contact, handlingfollow-up questions andclarifications with UWR staff,who met with the studentsagain in March to help themfine-tune their diagnosis ofthe business problem.

“I found it very valuable todiscuss our challenge with thestudents and learn from theinsights provided by theirskillsets, includingcommunications, dataanalysis, finance and strategicplanning,” says Lanoway.Shum adds she liked that theproject was “real”, and thatthe students were trulymaking a meaningfulcontribution to theorganization’s work.

Even before the final meetingin April to hear and discussthe students’ final findings andrecommendations, Edwards-Bentz and her colleaguesrecognized the benefitscoming from the project. “We

now have research, findingsand recommendations that wewould otherwise not have. Inaddition, there are now 19individuals who are betterinformed about the uniquerole of United Way in thecommunity. This was anexceptional opportunityduring a time of decliningcharitable giving, far morecompetition for limitedresources, and increasedneeds in our community.”

When projects are wellorganized, and theexpectations are realistic,Anderson notes, the outcomescan be very good and verypractical. Organizations learnfirst-hand about howMillennials think, hecontinues, and can even scoutfor potential employees. “And,the students have practicalexperiences to show on theirresumes.”

It is with great sadnessthat we reflect on thepassing of Dr. Subba (Muthu)Muthuchidambaram,Professor Emeritus. Dr. Muthu passed away onNovember 2, 2017 at theage of 85. Muthu was bornand raised in India andreceived a Ph.D. at the

University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1968. He moved toRegina and started work as a professor in the Faculty ofBusiness Administration at the University of Reginawhere he remained for 35 years. He was known as anindividual with strong values and a gentle nature. Hewas a dedicated educator, trusted colleague and valuedmentor and role model. The Faculty is thankful for hiscontributions and friendship over the years and willgreatly miss his regular presence in the hallways.
