The Celebration of Sacraments

Infant Baptism: The Sacrament of Baptism is regularly celebrated on Sunday during or after the Eucharistic Liturgy. Registered parishioners are asked to arrange for the Baptismal Preparation Class and the Liturgical Celebration by calling the Parish Office.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults: RCIA is the process of growing in your faith and love of God. Weekly gatherings take place from September until Easter. If you are interested in learning about Catholicism and joining us please call Deacon Tom at the rectory at Historic St. Patrick @ 419-243-6452. Penance: The Sacrament of Penance is celebrated at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at IC, 9:30 a.m. at HSP and 10:30 a.m. at IC every Sunday or by appointment.

Matrimony: Anyone planning to be married must contact the parish at least six months in advance. The exact date and time of your wedding should not be determined until after consultation with a priest or deacon. If either party has previously been civilly or religiously married, the Presider is not permitted to set a date for the wedding without resolving the previous marriage.

Pastoral Care of the Sick: When a parishioner is admitted to the hospital, nursing home, or confined to home because of age or infirmity, please call the Parish Office. Parishioners are ready to visit and to bring Holy Communion. When one is seriously ill, the healing Presence of the Lord should be requested in the Sacrament of the Sick.

Dear People of God, I’m often asked why I don’t leap to the forefront after some big disaster to comment. The answer to that is many-faceted. First off, the letters in the bulletin are provided weeks in advance to make sure we meet deadlines since the bulletin is printed in Columbus. Often disasters don’t cooperate with the necessity of having the copy down there well ahead of time to get the bulletin delivered before the Sunday Mass! Equally important is to focus on these tragedies after the uproar has settled to make sure the readership is less emotionally distracted and more intellectually adept. Unfortunately, we humans have a tendency to leap off the log and into the raging river before thinking about those rapids just around the corner. Time allows us to better grasp the immensity of the situation and draw conclusions based on solid fact rather than conjecture and, equally unfortunate, mistaken reporting provided by a media which has to meet tighter deadlines than I do with these letters! Time also helps us overcome the cultural tendency to give even the worst disaster its “fifteen minutes of fame” and then move on to something else. A real disaster leaves behind effects which may endure for years and which demand more than a “Breaking News!” announcement on the television. As an example, I’m sure we all remember the Columbine incident yet how many of us can quickly recall how many students were killed and how many injured? Can we readily bring to mind the name of the shooter at Sandy Hill let alone the names of the families whose lives continue to be wracked by the losses experienced there? Do we remember how many lives were lost in the tsunami that came ashore in Japan? Can we identity the victims of the teen-aged shooter in Cleveland? Have we followed up on the psychological studies of the people who perpetrate these terrible acts here in the U.S.? By holding off for a while it might be possible to articulate ways and means of preventing such acts rather than just bemoan them in the moment. So here’s a fact to chew on: Those who commit acts of random violence intending to kill as many as possible are almost always from broken homes. Not just single-parent settings, but where domestic violence and disrespect for a spouse and/or children has been the norm. So there is an answer to preventing these events: improve family life and grow respect for others. In the Church, we refer to this as love God with your whole mind, your whole heart, your whole soul, and with all your strength and love your neighbor as you love yourself. Acts of violence are the result of a culture which has failed to prepare young people, especially vulnerable boys, to love themselves appropriately so it is difficult or even impossible to love others.

There will be a craft and angel sale on Sunday, Nov. 3rd after mass. Judy Schwind has a lovely collection of angels which she is offering to sell, donating proceeds to Outreach. Linda Garcia has been crocheting pumpkins of various colors and will also be selling them at that time. If there are other “crafters” who have items they would like to donate and sell, bring them over! (smaller items only please)

Friday Faith Sharing is off to a good start! We had Part 1 on the sacrament of Penance, and will visit Part 2 on Penance this Friday. These are video presentations that last about 30 minutes, preceded by a light lunch beginning at noon. Join us!

Thanks to all who were able to stop down to Mayores Senior Center on Saturday for the Outreach Mexican Dinner! It seemed, at first, like parking would be a challenge, but Tonda, our Mayores rep and hostess, went over and above to make it work. The support of all is appreciated! Thanks, especially, to the Outreach Crew who were “manning” the kitchen, along with a younger volunteer. They chopped, diced, sliced, stirred and fried for many hours….and thanks too for the guys who did all the packing up and picking up at the end of the evening. Thanks also to those that just got “sucked in” due to kindness…that’s why we say “Darby Volunteers are the Heart of it all!
