We are open for public Mass, while we recognize that many are eager to return to Mass in our churches, it remains im-portant for those who are el-

derly and otherwise at risk to refrain from returning to public liturgies until it is manifestly safe to do so. All the faithful continue to be dispensed from their Sun-day obligation until further notice. Those who are sick must stay home. Those considered high risk and their caregivers are strongly encouraged to stay home. When coming to Mass it will look differently. Since we will have to sanitize after each service we will be celebrating Mass in the parish hall. This is so that we can make sure all areas are cleaned with ap-propriate cleaner. The pews in the Church can only be cleaned with warm, soapy water and that does not satisfy the CDC regulation. We are also allowed only 33% of capacity. So, we will be offering more Mass times to accommodate this. We will only be able to have 75 people attend Mass at a time. We have a form posted on the website that you can access by going to www.parishsfds.com under the about and contact us tab. The direct link to the form is https://parishsfds.com/covidsurvey . This form will help us schedule ahead of time and keep our oc-cupancy in regulation. We are asking you to please fill this form out and come at the time se-lected. We will be making sure our Parishioners are able to attend and if there is room for others, they will be let in after we have all entered. Mass Time Options – Sing-up required. Daily Masses: Tues. 6:00 pm, Wed. - Fri. 8:00 am Weekend Masses: Saturday 4:00pm & 6:00 pm and Sundays at 8:30 am & 11:00 am The doors will be opened 30 minutes prior to each Mass time and will be locked when we reach full oc-cupancy or when Mass begins, whichever comes first. It is imperative that you keep the time that you have scheduled. If you need to change or update it, please contact the office. Please enter through the Parish Hall doors from the parking lot side, which will be the only entrance avail-able. The doors will be propped open for ease of en-trance. Here are some other changes that you need to know prior to coming to Mass. These are all driven by the Governors guidelines and have been approved by the Bishop:

• Anyone over the age of 2 must wear a mask at all times. If you are not able to wear a mask, please do not plan to come to Mass as you will not be let in with-out one. If you have a child that can’t keep a mask on, they cannot come. • We do have sanitizer, but please bring your own if you have it. • There cannot be any singing. • There will be someone directing you where to sit. We will fill in from front to back to keep social distance guidelines and you can only sit with people within your household. • We will exit from back to front and can’t gather in the parking lot. There will be someone directing you when to leave. • The collection basket will be out under the large crucifix on the wall. Please put your envelope or do-nations in the basket when you arrive. • During Communion –Fr. Bruce will come to each person and give Communion in the hand. You cannot receive by mouth at this time and there will be no Cup. • Staff will be at all Masses, if you have questions please ask one of them. They will be able to assist you should a need or questions arise. Bulletins are available for you to take after mass, it is also available on our parish website. All other re-sources can be found online as well. Some sites are posted on our website as well as the Diocesan web-site at https://owensborodiocese.org/ Bishop Medley has released a statement as well as the guidelines and it can be read on this link: https://owensborodiocese.org/return-to-public-mass/ Fr. Bruce will also not be able to hear confessions during this time. Some have raised the question about the possibility of providing general absolution to the assembly upon resuming public Mass. The Bishop discussed this and has stated that it is not clear that our circumstance would meet the church’s criteria for this act. Catechesis may be made to the faithful re-garding paragraph 1452 of the Catechism on making a perfect Act of Contrition. Please be patient and kind during this transition. It is new to all of us and we will get through it.

The Social Jus ce Commi ee needs some volunteers to help our parish family. We are in

need of 8 adult volunteers to complete the projects for those in need.

There are 2 outdoor pain ng projects and 1

landscaping and trash removal project. This will be a half day of work, prayer, and fellowship.

Lunch will be provided.

“But who do you say that I am?”

Jesus retreats with his disci-ples to the forested hills and refreshing streams of Caesa-rea Philippi (in the northern tipof Israel between Lebanon and Syria) for some private time with them to reflect on what they have seen and heard. After asking what others say about him, he ask his disciples “But who do you say that I am?” Despite reli-gious, social and family influ-ences that prevented others from recognizing the Messi-ah, Simon Peter accepts re-sponsibility for his own faith and declares, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus uses the occa-sion to give Peter (The Rock) responsibility for preserving and passing on that faith to

others. As a consequence of our baptism we each have a share in the responsibility for preserving and passing on that faith. That requires a mature and constantly grow-ing faith. A simple test: How would we answer Jesus if he ask, “But who do you say that I am?” What would we say to other who ask, “Who is Je-sus?”

It is important to read today’s Gospel and next week’s Gospel as two parts of a single story. These readings are a turning point in Matthew’s Gospel. This week we hear Jesus name Simon Peter as the rock upon which he will build his Church. Next week we will hear Jesus call this same Simon Peter "Satan" when he reacts negatively to Jesus’ pre-diction about his passion and death.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus asks his disciples what people are saying about his identity. The disciples indicate that most people believe that Jesus is a prophet of Israel. Then Jesus asks his disciples who they believe that he is. Simon Peter answers, identifying Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of God. Jesus commends Simon Peter for this profession of faith, indicating that this insight has come from God. Be-cause of Simon Peter’s response, Jesus calls him the "rock" upon which Jesus will build the Church. This is a word play on the name Peter, which is the Greek word for "rock." Peter is then given special authority by Je-sus, a symbolic key to the Kingdom of Heaven. Peter will play an important role in the early Christian com-munity as a spokesperson and a leader. In today’s Gospel, Peter’s recognition of Jesus’ identity is credited to a revelation by God. This will contrast sharply with Jesus’ rebuke of Peter in next week’s Gospel. When Peter rejects Jesus’ prediction of his passion and death, Peter is said to no longer be thinking as God does but as humans do.

The use of the term church in today’s Gospel is one of only three such occurrences in Matthew’s Gospel. Peter in this Gospel is being credited as the foundation for the Church, a privilege granted to him because of his recognition of Jesus’ identity. The Church continues to be grounded in the faith that Jesus Christ is Lord.


Saint Augustine of Hippo Bishop and Doctor of the Church

Aug. 28th St. Augustine, also called Saint Augustine of Hippo, (born No-vember 13, 354, in Tagaste, Nu-midia (now Souk Ahras, Algeria)—died August 28, 430, Hippo Regius (now Annaba, Algeria); feast day August 28), bishop of Hippo from 396 to 430, one of the Latin Fathers of the Church and perhaps the most significant Christian thinker af-ter St. Paul. Augustine’s adaptation of classical thought to Christian teaching created a theological system of great power and lasting influence. His numerous written works, the most important of which are Confessions (c. 400) and The City of God (c. 413–426), shaped the practice of biblical exegesis and helped lay the founda-tion for much of medieval and modern Christian thought. In Roman Catholicism he is formally recog-nized as a doctor of the church.

Catholic Architecture & Furnishings—What does it mean? Nearly every detail of a traditional Catholic church building has a precise and rich significance, pointing to important aspects of Catholic faith and practice.

"Visible churches are not simply gathering places but signify and make visible the Church living in this place, the dwelling of God with men reconciled and united in Christ . . . In this 'house of God' the truth and the harmony of the signs that make it up should show Christ to be present and active in this place." (CCC 1180-81)

Perhaps the most common elements of the nave are the pews and their kneelers. Most commonly pews are formed by a wooden bench with a back. Padded kneelers are another common feature. The traditional arrangement of pews is unidirectional — that is, one behind the next, facing the sanctuary of the church. Pews contribute to making the nave look like a church; they are a part of our Catholic patrimony and have commonly been used in the West since at least the thirteenth century, when

they were designed as backless benches. By the late sixteenth century most Catholic churches being built included wooden pews with kneelers and high backs. But even before the time when pews were commonly used, the faithful still knelt during much of the Mass.

Kneeling has always been a distinct posture for Catholic worship; first, in adoration of Christ, and second, as a posture of humility. Significantly, Catholic worship includes both adoration and the humbling of oneself before God. The pew is simply meant to accommodate this particular posture of worship.
