Dear Friends,

The campus is alive with brilliant color, as if a painter working from his palette trans-formed the grounds with his artistry. So often we go about our daily routine and don’t stop to see the beauty that surrounds us. It is important for us all to stop and smell the roses even if it is only for a brief moment.

The month of May is upon us and Commencement is just around the corner. Our seniors are both excited and apprehensive about what the future holds for The Class of 2009. As we all know, graduation marks the end of one adventure and the start of a new journey.

May brings many activities, events and Knox traditions. Students will participate in the Ring Ceremony, the receiving of Red & White Blazers, Senior Prom, Senior Projects, Sen-ior Tree Dedication, Student Talent Show, Knox’s musical Little Shop of Horrors and the Rose Leaves yearbook dedication.

The Parents’ Association will be holding their final meeting at Bella Vita City Grill, 430 North Country Road, St. James (across from 7-11) on Thursday, May 14 at 7pm. The final meeting will be “Dutch Treat.” We hope there will be a large turn out of current and new parents (2009-2010). The evening should be relaxing and enjoyable. We plan on reviewing the school year and preparing for the next. Please contact Christine Cleary for more infor-mation ([email protected] or 631-686-1600).

Several weeks ago, the entire school community took part in Knox International Day, cele-brating the various cultures of our students, faculty and parents. Brenda Pigou, World Lan-guages Chair, organized the program. Students and faculty sang in their native languages, performed costume dances and held a unique fashion show. Afterward, there was an inter-national food expo featuring delicacies prepared by students, faculty and parents. The spread rivaled Harrods.

Our Science Fair featured projects created by all our science students. The projects were very interesting and each student was very proud of their work. The science students and their teachers are to be commended for their efforts. Next year, the Science Fair will take place on Friday, February 5, 2010.

A Headmaster’s Assembly will be held on Memorial Day at 11am in Houghton Hall Library. At the assembly, two of our faculty members, Janice Zingale and Laura White, will be recognized for their service to The Knox School. That evening, there will be a tradi-tional Memorial Day cookout with all the fixings for students and faculty.

Next month will be our last Beacon for the school year. We are open to any suggestions and comments you may have.

Best wishes,

Friday, April 10th 6:00 am came up suddenly. Six sleepy Knox students arrived at the sta-bles, helped load the horses (Keebler, Quincy and Duncan) and we all headed to Thomas School of Horsemanship in Hunt-ington for the annual Junior Olympics. Brianne Sullivan ’09, Jessica Wen ’10 and Gabby Wessler ’11 prepared to ride, and just as importantly, DJ Nam ’10 (our alternate), Matt Behar ’12 and Lauren Biello ’09 became groomers, videographers, photog-raphers and food and confidence dispensers. Although overcast, the weather was good. We competed in 9 classes and won 3 second place ribbons and 3 fifth place ribbons. Our "waterloo" were forgotten courses. Everyone came home with 2 ribbons each, com-

peting with 24 other riders from across Long Island. Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Smith were very proud of all our Knox students with regard to their team spirit, helpfulness and support of one another. Mistakes were accepted as just a part of life and were always met with a "you'll do better next time" attitude. We were proud of them as examples of what Knox expects from them as young adults and from a riding point of view, they were definately competitive. This was Bri Sullivan’s ’09 and Lauren Biello's ’09 last Junior

Olympic experience as they are Seniors. We, at the barn, will miss them next fall. P.S. Thank you for your good behavior; Quincy, Keebler and Duncan- we couldn't have done it without you!

Ninth Grade Visits The Metropolitan Museum of Art On April 16th the 9th grade and the Shakespeare class went on a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. When we got off the bus we had lunch in Central Park. We never knew that most of Knox students were scared of pigeons! The group got into the mu-seum and we all were given a purple clip, it was not the best fashion state-ment, but they didn’t look too bad. We first started out as a group and began in the Arms and Armories ex-hibition. It was fascinating. I liked the samurai armor, and there was also medieval armor from Europe. When we were finished look-ing at the armor, we moved to the Byzantine Empire exhibition. It was full of interesting decorative pieces and lots of ancient scriptures. After looking around an Elizabethan room we split into two groups.

The Shakespeare class split into groups if its own. My group went to the Egyptian exhibit with the freshmen following close behind. The freshmen moved onto the Ko-rean, Chinese and Japanese exhibits and we continued to move through the exhibits quickly on our own. We saw furniture, paintings and many other interesting artifacts from different time periods. Before moving on to the final destination, some people went to look at the Im-pressionist art. They said it was really interesting with subtle blends of color and a slight haze to the pic-tures. We finished off our trip and returned to Knox having found that museums don’t have to be boring!

First Annual Grandparents’ Day Was A Success The Knox School was thrilled to an-nounce the First Annual Grandparents’ Day this year! The school invited all students to bring their grandparent(s) to school with them for a day. Knox welcomed fourteen grandparents to campus on April 2nd. Before grandparents went to classes with their grandchild, they enjoyed coffee and baked goods served during registration. The day concluded with lunch in Houghton Hall. Guests were entertained by the vocal ensemble, enjoyed a solo vocal performance by Aaliyah Picanso ’13 and Sarang Koo ’13 played the piano. Taylour Dickerson ‘12, the winner of the Poetry Out Loud Contest, recited “Phenomenal Woman” by Maya Angelou. Over all, the program was a great success and the students can’t wait until the Second Annual Grandparents’ Day!

Ms. Rodriguez took her Honors Spanish V class to a Spanish restaurant in Port Jefferson on Friday, March 27th. The name of the restaurant is "Costa de Espana," and it provides a touch of Spain to the Long Island Sound. Both students, Bianca Gracie ’09 and Alex Burst ’09, had the opportunity to order traditional food such as: arroz con pollo, sopa de lentejas, and a delicious side order of frijoles. This was a great experience for the two seniors who enjoyed the company, the warm setting, and this authentic Spanish cuisine. They are looking forward to visiting more restaurants and experiencing other Latin American dishes in the future.

Dear parents and guardians: Although the weather has been cool, the daffodils are now in full bloom and our

home by the shore is quite beautiful in the spring sunlight. As usual, our students have been very active both in and out of the classroom. At the beginning of the term, Model United Na-tions Club students prepared a slideshow for the school documenting their activities this year; they are planning a trip to visit the United Nations in late May. Mr. Staebler took his Honors Art History class on a tour of the Museum of Modern Art in early April and most recently, Mr. Naron’s Geographical Cultures classes (Grade 9) and Mrs. White’s Shakespeare class visited to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Mr. Naron’s classes viewed art and artifacts from the Byzantine period. Mrs. White’s Shakespeare students, who are reading Henry V and learning about the Battle of Azincourt, visited the armor exhibits. On campus, my French II classes prepared Quiche Lorraine in my kitchen. Other April events include the International Fair, sponsored by the World Language Department and the Science Fair, sponsored by the Math/Science department. Students are working hard on their projects for both events and we are confident that both of these events will be successful. If you haven’t already put the date on your calendar, don’t forget to write in the spring musical, “Little Shop of Horrors” on May 8th and May 9th.

The curricular offerings for the 2009-2010 academic year have now been finalized and will be published shortly on Edline. Students will be meeting with their advisors to discuss their course requests. Rising seniors will also meet with their college counselors to discuss their course selections for the coming year. New courses for the 2009-2010 academic year include Conceptual Physics (Grade 9), AP Statistics, AP Computer Science, Modern Cultural Geography (Grade 9), and Comparative Religion (Grade 11). There are also term electives in Astronomy, Oceanography, and Current Topics in sci-ence for those who have completed their lab science requirement. Vittoria Marzot will be teaching AP Biology in the Ad-vance placement science rotation. There are also changes in the English curriculum. Eleventh graders will now complete two terms of American Literature and twelfth grade students will complete two terms British Literature. The English de-partment will offer term electives in the spring open to both grades.

Seniors involved in Senior Projects submitted their final proposals on April 17th. Those seniors who opted not to complete a project will continue to attend classes during this period. Sharon Lawrence and Carol Christensen serve as the co-chairs of the Senior Project Committee which includes department chairs Stephen Pendley, Linda Pack-Butler, Brenda Pigou, Matt Frageau, and Laura White. One of the more interesting developments in this year’s senior projects is the medium of communication with students during their time off campus. Committee members, on-campus faculty advisors and fellow senior project participants will be reading the students’ online journals/blogs daily via NING, an online networking site. Advisors, committee members, and students will then be able to post comments and questions to each other on the site. It promises to be an exciting two weeks.

If you haven’t visited campus recently, we invite you to do so soon. We welcome all parents and guardians to visit our classrooms, take part in on campus activities, and see firsthand a Knox education in progress. Please log on to Edline for more information on up-coming events at the Knox School.

George J. Naron, Dean of Students The warm weather has made a brief appearance so far this spring! The athletic teams are into the heart of the season, and we are looking forward to the spring musical; Little Shop of Horrors, and the Senior Prom. Jun-iors interested in becoming Dorm Proctors for the next school year are being interviewed by residential life faculty over the next few weeks, for the 2009-2010 school year. Our students have been very receptive to the weekend trip schedule and have made a number of sugges-tions for trips that we will offer in late April and May. We hope you will be able to join us and share in the tradi-tions and activities that make Knox such a special place for our students.

We still need your support in following school policies and procedures.

1) Parents must check out students leaving the school before 5:00p.m. on weekdays in the Main Office

2) Please be sure to fax in Weekend Permission Forms by 1:00p.m. the Thursday before the weekend requested. Students may not leave until after 5:00p.m. on Friday afternoon and must return by 7:00p.m. on Sunday evening (seniors back by 9:30p.m.).

3) Day student parents, please call in a student absence to the Main Office (631) 686-1600 no later than 8:30a.m. that morning.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about student or school policies and procedures.

Do you remember that feeling when you stared across the gym at the painted faces of your oppo-nent? Do you remember wanting to pummel your best friend because he/she is on the opposing team! Mr. Allison and Mrs. Zingale do!! That is why this year, for the first time, Mr. Allison and Mrs. Zingale are challenging you to compete for your team by supporting the Knox Fund. This fund is extremely important to the school because it helps narrow the gap between tuition costs and actual operating expenses. Contributions made between March 1— July 1, 2009 will be tallied and a WINNER declared. So pull out those Red and White dollars and support your team. May the best team win! Denise (go red!)
