Wills for

Heroes

Coordinated by Timoney Knox, LLC, attorneys and legal staff were part of a recent “Wills for Heroes” program, a free legal service that provides Wills, Living Wills, Health Care and Financial Powers of Attorney to first responders, military veterans, their spouses and partners. Fifty (50) first responders/veterans and spouses attended, including a Vietnam Vet, a Korean War Vet and a 94-year old World War II Vet. Timoney Knox representatives called the experience ’humbling.’ Timoney Knox attorneys: Tom Boulden, Andrea Procton, Kate Harper, John McAneney, Christine Gordon and Jim Jacquette.

Not all heroes wear capes, but they all possess a robust and mindful heart. There are many heroes throughout

the FWBA community. This issue of “Connections” proudly highlights some of them.

Lee Benson was sworn in as Upper Dublin Police Chief in March 2017, replacing Terry Thompson, who retired after 42 years of service.

Chief Benson started as a patrolman in Upper Dublin in 1985 and was promoted to detective, sergeant, Deputy Chief and now Chief. He attended the FBI National Academy in 2003. The UDPD, established in 1928, is charged with the protection of life and property within Upper Dublin Township. The department is a

AMY BROWN The FWBA Executive Board recently welcomed Amy Brown to its volunteer ranks. Amy replaces Tone Brady, Somerset Properties, who served the board and the FWBA well during his volunteer tenure. The FWBA board sincerely thanks Tone for his insightful service.

Amy Brown has lived in Upper Dublin since 1994 and has been an active FWBA member for more than three years, attending and assisting with many functions and bringing guests with her as prospective members. She will be part of the FWBA’s Membership Committee and looks forward to meeting new business representatives.

To fulfill its mission, the department employs 40 full-time sworn police officers, six Police Communication Officers, a Records Clerk and an Administrative Staff Officer. The UDPD is

dispatched to “Calls for Service” by the Montgomery County Communications Center (911). There are two primary department divisions, Administration and Patrol, with three support units identified as Communications, Detectives, and Records, as well as several specialized units addressing Bicycle Patrol, Highway Patrol, Major Incident Response, Medical Response, Narcotics Enforcement, Professional Standards, and Tactical Response. The Fort Washington Fire Company was formed in 1908 to protect the lives, property and environment of the citizens and visitors of Upper Dublin Township and neighboring communities. This mission is accomplished through vigilant training, fire prevention education, professional development, pride and teamwork. The department is made up of an all-volunteer team, which includes Line Officers, Administrative Officers, Engineers, Fire Police and a Board of Directors. The FWFCo is the primary provider of Fire/Rescue services for the township, which is approximately 13.2 square miles with a population of about 26,000 people. The fire company also serves the Township’s primary center of business, the FWOP, which is 536 acres with 65 buildings and six million SF of building area. The FWFCo was awarded the 2008 UD Medal in the Non-Profit Organization category. A few of the safety and educational programs offered include:

In the July 2016 FWBA newsletter,

details about the reconstruction work of two aging bridges over Pine Run on Vir-ginia Drive were reviewed. The Township

plan was successful and the work was completed within a 12-month timeframe. The bridgework was part of $30 million for

infrastructure improvements in the park. Building two high hazard dry dams over Rapp Run and Pine Run, completed in

2013, at a cost of about $18 million, was done to protect properties. The dams are built to withstand 9 to 15 inches of rainfall

for 2 to 3 consecutive days. The return on investment will be recaptured in reduction of roadway water damage, clean up costs,

material replacement costs, hazards, res-cues, and loss of work time. These and other future improvements

aim to strengthen investments for property owners through multiple efforts to attract and maintain a strong tenant base.

For these reasons, a General Municipal Authority was adopted in September 2016. The GMA consists of five appointed mem-

bers who are tasked to research, review and develop fee structures proportionately for needed improvements and the busi-

nesses that directly benefit from them. An

authority raises money by issuing bonds to pay for a particular project. All of the pro-posed actions are central to the long-

range goal of competitively positioning the FWOP in the current regional marketplace. GMA meetings are held at the Town-

ship building on the first Friday of the month at 7:30 a.m. They are open to the public. A quorum

is required for any special action to be taken. 2017 Board Members:

The Upper Dublin Police Department and Upper Dublin School District employees participated in the first annual Black Student Union

sponsored charity football game. UDHS students served as team coaches and referees. Ticket sales and refreshment purchases raised money for Officer Carroll, a local police veteran and for BSU club events. One team prevailed, but it goes without saying that both teams are winners!

Upper Dublin Aquatic Club is a parent-governed youth sports organization with a first-class professional coaching staff that offers training and competition at all levels in swimming,

diving and water polo. UDAC is a member club of USA Swimming, the Suburban Aquatic League, AAU Diving, and American Water Polo. UDAC athletes compete at the local, regional, national and international level and have earned awards at all levels. Private lessons are available in partnership with the School District. U.D. High School student Tyler Seabrook led a drive to recruit bone marrow donors. His registration drive resulted in 50+ people signing up to donate! Tyler served as the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader for Activities for Boy Scout Troop 542. As a result of this project and achievement in the areas of leadership, service and character, Tyler earned the highest rank possible, that of Eagle Scout. “FWBA NORTH HILLS READS” Students at the summer camp programs and activities in North Hills got a brand new “Book Nook” area with new books, reading rug, bean bag chairs, bookcase and more, all through a surprise donation from ESD, Inc. during the FWBA Kids ‘n Smiles Toy

Drive last December. For many reasons, including extra toy donations from the UD Police Department, the funds were not all used. Elishe Gee, Educational Director and the school district supervisor of curriculum discussed recent research results that

found that giving kids 12 books to read over the summer was as effective as summer school in raising students’ reading scores. From there the “FWBA NORTH HILLS READS” project was initiated to give students 12 new books. The photos show the excitement a new book brings or the pleasure at having a story read out loud. ESD, Inc. has been an ongoing supporter of a variety of charitable ventures in and around Upper Dublin and was the 2015 recipient of the Upper Dublin Medal as an Outstanding Community Business.

Rush Hour Run The 2nd annual Fort Washington Rush Hour Run, presented by UDP&R and the FWBA, was held in June to raise funds to enable under resourced children attend UDP&R Summer Camps. In reality, the funds actually help the entire family as parents do not have to worry about finding and paying for summer childcare services. Eight families were helped directly through this event. Fees from the 70 runners and the generosity of FWBA

The Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association is a non-profit land trust founded in 1957 to protect the quality and beauty of the Wissahickon Creek. A small, committed group conceived of the WVWA to address the dangers of flooding posed by the Creek. The group was sensitive to the interconnectedness of water, land and the inhabitants of the Watershed. A watershed is an area or ridge of land that separates waters and which drains surrounding streams and tributaries into a flowing singular larger body of water, such as a creek, river or ocean. Decades of replacing land and forests with housing, commercial development, paved parking areas and increased roadways has resulted in a reduction in the amount of water that seeps naturally into the ground. As a result, creeks and rivers flood more often and bring more pollutants into our water. Whatever happens to the surrounding land in our communities affects the water quality of the creek. Economic Forecast for 2017 and Beyond

The FWBA regularly plans meetings focused on “Economic Forecast” for the region and nation. Manufacturers’ Golf & Country Club hosted “The Feds” as the presenter for this informative and meaningful topic. MGCC provided a scrumptious hot buffet for members in its newly-renovated, charming facility. Ryotoro Tashiro, Economic and Public Outreach, Federal Reserve Bank of Phila. was the program presenter and made the presentation and insights available to FWBA members.

FBLA GOES WEST ….The 2017 Future Business Leaders of America Club held its National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, CA this summer. UD High School had 19 qualifying competitors, which is a new school record, and 12 students earned trophies as top 10 finishers! PA-FBLA included over 500 students, advisors and family members. In total, there were more than12,000 in attendance representing 47 states, Brazil, Cayman Islands, China, Europe, Haiti, Korea, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands. The Future Business Leaders of American Club celebrates its 75th anniversary. The active club at UDHS works with the FWBA on various projects. The Association of Fundraising Professionals of Greater Philadelphia has selected Peggy Brennan Dolan to receive the Lifetime

Achievement Award, which will be presented in November at the National Philanthropy Day Luncheon in Center City. The award highlights her dedicated efforts with the Kelly Anne Dolan Memorial Fund. It was standing room only at the Meals on Wheels Benefit Brunch & Silver Foxes Fashion Show at Normandy Farms in June. Fifteen snazzy men and

ladies, SAAC members and/or MOW volunteers, hit the runway and re-defined what aging looks like. Extensive research reveals that programs like MOW enrich lives and also reduce

healthcare costs. Dedicated volunteers deliver

complete nutrition and a friendly visit to over 350 recipients daily across lower Montgomery County.

From a recipient: “After my wife died, I was depressed and had trouble

making meals,” said Harry. “Meals on Wheels helps me

with food, but is also a bright spot in my day.”

Outrunning Senior Hunger 5k Run/3k Walk ~ Sat., September 16 at Montco Community College, 8 am. Discounted entry fee before

Virginia Drive roadway redesign (Road Diet)

and Cross-County Trail construction project

will begin, with the first of four phases. Note,

no road closures are anticipated. The second

and third phases are fully funded and will be

constructed in 2018 and 2019. The fourth and

final phase, along Delaware Drive, has

received funding commitments, with additional

grants being sought to reduce the local

funding obligation. This work is estimated for

2019 and 2020.
