This Old Body (of Christ)

Autoimmune Disease—one of those inconvenient instances where the

human body attacks itself.

Mine comes in the form of arthritis—in both of knees; one worse than the

other. I walk up and down the stairs like a 2-year old-right foot one stair, left

foot same step. Repeat. On really bad days my “normal” walking stride I

refer to as a cross between Frankenstein’s Monster and Fred Sanford.

For years I have suffered through the pain that comes and goes. But, lately

I’ve noticed how my malfunctioning knees are affecting other joints. During

the times when my knee won’t bend properly I can feel my hips, back and

ankle working overtime to compensate...and they don’t like it, at all!

The Lord made me think about how His body—the church– and how when

one member (ministry) malfunctions the others must (or should) take up the

slack and work harder, overcompensating for the one that needs

assistance.

I’ve not stated anything most of us don’t know already about the body of

Christ. [Preaching to the choir.]

So, let me ask how functioning is your ministry? Or, how prepared is it for

an unexpected case of “autoimmune disease”? Is the rest of your particular

body prepared to take up a portion of Christ’s work when another area is

temporarily walking like a toddler? Will others pitch in (like it or not) for no

other reason than Kingdom work must never cease.

Imagine every single usher bedridden with the Flu. What would happen if

all the preachers were snowed in two states away at a conference? After

the custodial staff all break out in an awful rash after using a

new cleaning solution…

In my “old age” I’ve been asking the Lord to show me more of

Himself. Jesus used parables of everyday

A n d t h o s e members of the body which we think to be less honorable, on these we bestow greater honor; and our unpresentable parts have greater modesty, but our presentable parts have no need. But God composed the body, having given greater honor to the part which lacks it, that there should be no schism in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another.

could relate. So, if He can use my everyday aches and

pains that come along with the blessing of getting older to

make real His Holy Word, imagine if you allowed Him to

what He can reveal to you.

Our heavenly Father desires to have with His children a

relationship that brings us closer with each passing day.

MUSINGS OF A SENIOR CITIZEN

My Primary Sunday School class has been discussing the importance of praise.

When asked to define praise, they use examples of waving Holy hands, shouting, singing,

and dancing. These are all very important aspects and activities of praise. When asked if

these things can be done daily, they agreed that you do them at church. We talked about

praising at home and at school. They opined that it can be done at home, but might be too

disruptive at school.

I offered a definition of praise-an expression of thanks to or love and respect for

God. One writer stated that we can praise God by studying His Word; by dancing, praying

and by proclaiming His mightiness. The children were able to conclude that we can praise

Him in many ways and in many places. The limitations are the ones we place on it.

It made me think about my personal practices related to praise. I tend to be

reserved and conservative in my worship. Oh, I do not mean that I am too stiff to worship;

I just like to listen and take it all in and to personalize it later. I do not try to out -talk the

preacher. It is my experiences that when I am talking I do not hear what is being said. For

me there is a time to listen and a time to speak. I am a contemplative worshipper. Listen

and think.

Daily, I meditate on the Word. I pray for greater understanding so I can align my life

with God’s purpose. I engage in discussions with people who are dwelling in the Word

and who have the Word dwelling in them. I seek God’s presence in my life and in my

living. And ultimately, I feel the joy that only His presence can bring to me. My praise is

manifested in my dealings with the world. I seek to present to the world my joy at serving

a living God. I am an ambassador for Christ. My praise goes beyond the walls of the

church. My praise is manifested in all I do.

So, if you do not see me doing a holy dance or waving my hands during a church

service-know that God gets all of my praise; it just does not look like someone’s else’s

praise. He is Holy and receives the whole praise and glory.
