    The sound of her sobs di ed away on hi s ear s. The bed was war m, andhi s eyes heavy wi t h sl eep. He dozed f i t f ul l y, and t hen sl ept unt i la sudden wi l d cr y f r om hi s wi f e awoke hi m wi t h a st ar t .
