Note: The telephones above are special purpose instruments. Weatherproof instruments are self-explanatory - generally for use outdoor. Certified/Colliery/Mining telephones are used wherethere could be a danger from explosive gases. Various mechanical and electrical precautionsare taken in the design of theses instruments to prevent sparks reaching the external atmos-phere. Dials are mechanically isolated from the inner part of the instrument, capacitors areshunted across bell coils, 'atmites' are employed to shunt high voltages and low outputmagneto's are employed amongst other things. The use of handset cords is sometimes eliminat-ed by connecting the earpieces with a metal tube, the transmitter is then mounted on thefront of the instrument.

Flameproof telephones are for use in hazardous situations where damage might occur to a normaltelephone instrument.

'Surface Types' are used on the surface of mines where spark isolation is not so critical.
