Possible resources to support the following lessons

If possible using real money would be a valuable resource to support the

following lessons especially lots of change. If this is not available I have included some printable money if you

are able to print this out. However, you do not need actual

money, anything can represent money for example, children could use dried pasta to represent money, pebbles or stones, biscuits, or pieces of paper. Anything around the house that you

have a large quantity of.Please also see this website which is full

of great money games.

Lesson 1- Writing amounts of moneyLesson Approach

1.To begin this lesson, show children the In Focus task and state that Ruby is not sure whether or not she has enough money to pay for the smoothie. Ask questions like; How much does the smoothie cost? How much does Ruby have?

2.Work through Let's Learn 1 to show the class how to answer the problem. Use the diagram to discuss together that there are 10 10ps in £1. Ask children how would we write 10p? Explore this together, ensure to explain to children we can write 10p as £0.10, this is important that children see that 10p is a part of £1.

3.Look at the Let’s learn 2 and ask children how much money is there? Then show children that the diagram shows that 5 10ps is the same has 50p which is the same as half of £1.

Discuss different ways of writing 50p ensuring that you show 50p can be written as £0.50

4

4.During Guided Practice, children are writing down amounts of money in pound formation for example,

40p is the same as £0.40

60p is the same as £0.60

5.Once your child has completed the guided practice they can have a go at the Independent task.

Lesson 3- Comparing amounts of money.

Lesson approach

1.To begin this lesson, show children the In Focus task and tell them your friend cannot decide which fruit and vegetables to buy and wants to compare the prices. You may need to copy and paste the image on to another document and make it bigger to be able to read. How can we compare the prices? Which digit do you think we should look at first when comparing the amounts? Why? What if this digit is the same, what should we compare next? Which item is the most expensive/least expensive? How do you know?

2.Together look at the Let’s Learn 1, here you are comparing the price of a mango and a pineapple. Discuss comparing the price of these items together. How much is each item? Together, compare the pounds.

3.Work through Let’s Learn 2, do the same comparing the pounds and so on, talk together

13

and explore these. Discuss that the tomatoes and oranges both have the same digit in the pounds column so that means we need to compare the value in the pence column.

4.Work through Let’s Learn 3 in the same way.

5.During Guided Practice, pupils are comparing amounts of money.

14

6.Once your child has

completed the guided practice they can have a go at the Independent task.

7.If your child has completed this and wish to complete a challenge this has been included.
