Walter’s Word – Association

This month’s word of “Word-Association” is “retreat.” I’m not talking about “run away!” However, in some ways it is that, a temporary running away for the purpose of refreshing, re-energizing and relaxing. This last week I had the opportunity to do this with 3 other Director of Missions. It’s been a while since I have had this kind of opportunity and I realize now how much I have needed it. When was the last time you “retreated?” Let me write to you church members who may be reading this. You need to urge and even pay for your pastors to take a retreat! Trust me on this, they will love you for it, and it will in benefitting them also benefit you. Alright, now let me write to the pastors, and by this term I am speaking to the ministry staff people of the church. You need to retreat for a few days. Out of town, off the grid, out of touch. Whether it is with your spouse, family or a few other ministers – get away for a time of refreshing. Being in a retreat setting with other ministers is important, they know what you are going through, you can share common thoughts, you can encourage each other, you can learn from each other – you’re just doing it in a relaxed, non-conference type arena. I love the old saying for ministers – If you don’t come apart from time to time, you will come apart. Church members, I encourage you to help your ministers with this, let them get away, help them get away, it will encourage them more than you know.
