E 16-20
JUPAS – The Mechanism
Role of participating institutes
Determine the “criteria for selection”
& “position for participants of each programme”
Conduct “Interviews” & “Admission tests”
Make “offer”
Role of JUPAS To proceed the matching process
1. Each of applicant’s selected programmes will give her a “Rating” in accordance with its criteria for selection, given by the participating institutes.
2. Such rating will then determine her position
in the “merit order list” of each
programme of her choices.
How JUPAS works?
Programme C

Confidential
Programme B
Merit Order List

Programme A
Merit Order List Student A xxx Student B xxx Student C xxx
Confidential
3. The computer system will match (the "iteration process") the order of preference the applicant has assigned to the study programmes of her choice with the position she has been placed in each merit order list of these programmes.
How JUPAS works?
JUPAS – The Iteration process
According to the information provided, find out the programmes that will be offered to the following students:
RED student ORANGE student YELLOW student
BLUE student PURPLE student

RED student:Programme A ORANGE student:Programme C YELLOW student:No offer BLUE student:Programme D PURPLE student:Programme D
Result
Factor affecting the result The Academic Performance!!!
How THEY rank the applicant > How the applicant rank them!
The applicant will be made an offer of the highest priority on her programme list for which she has the required rating.
How JUPAS works – The Iteration Process
Statistics of 2013 Entry
Total no. of applicants: (incl. degree / associate degree / higher diploma)
69,397
No. of Main Round offers: 18,239
(26.28%)
Degree: 14,746 (80.85%) AD/HD: 3,493 (19.15%)
JUPAS 2013 Entry Distribution of main round offer by Band
Admission to Local Institutions through 2013 JUPAS
Conclusion – Successful admission?
Depends on applicant’s “relative competitiveness” !
e.g. the more people achieve 3322 2 or above, the higher the cut-off points for general degree admission
Depends on how applicant place her choices “AFTER” the release of HKDSE
e.g. marginally over the cut-off points place less competitive courses / universities up front?
Chances for interviews / admission tests?
NOT by LUCK!!

How can parents help?
27 Sep 12,經濟日報
Experiences (GOOD & BAD ) Growth!
Don’t take them away from your kids!
