Welcome to another edition of the Bowler, that comes hot on the heels of some busy weeks. Open Bowls and the consolidation of Associations have

been at the forefront with several successful amalgamations already confirmed. The appointment of one administration has obvious benefits that flow on to establishing a competition program that conforms to the Open Bowls Policy. I trust that any Associations that are yet to commence these discussions take time to consider the benefits and in need contact Bowls SA for assistance.

Bowls SA is committed to investing in Volunteer recognition, appreciation and development programs that are crucial to the sustainability of Clubs, the sport overall and are a fundamental tool for encouraging engagement between the Bowling sector and the wider community and economy.Good news is the announcement of the strengthening of the partnership with Clubs SA which will fund a new Volunteer Training initiative over a three year period to support volunteer development. The program will see computers, purchased by Bowls SA, utilised for development and training volunteers.

Holding Seniors Supa Series events in conjunction with Volunteer Appreciation Days are an excellent complement to training and accreditation days. These have now been held in a number of areas and planning is underway with local Councils to see these rolled out across all areas of the State. Showcasing the sport and stimulating community awareness is an essential part of what Bowls SA is about. Further details are available on Page 6 and on the Bowls SA website www.bowlssa.com.au

As we begin to plan and prepare for 2014/15 and I look through the good news stories over the past playing year I am really impressed with the range of activities and the potential for these projects to have a positive impact on society. Conversely there is still room for improvement in communication and ensuring that members are kept informed is an ongoing challenge.Utilising social media has provided an instant communication tool through Facebook News Feeds and Twitter and I encourage you all to ‘Like Us’ on Facebook. The expansion of the use of the IMG IT system will also allow direct and regular communication with members and I encourage members to provide their email address during the registration process.

A record attendance of 314 at the Awards Night was, I believe, an indication that the sport is moving in the right direction. I urge Clubs to consider the criteria for the Volunteer of the Year and the Club of the Year Awards and submit nominations.I trust you will all take time to enjoy the break and come back ready for the new season.

Page 4: SA Bowler June 2014 Edition

Another pennant season has been completed and I trust it has been as enjoyable for you as it has been for me. For some they believe it has been very successful

as they were part of a winning side or team but as I have expressed at some of the presentations, congratulations should go to all that participated as with most sports there can only be one winner but participating on and off the field in our sport deserves congratulations.

What a marvellous venue for our Annual Awards Night; the Magarey Room at AAMI Stadium. It was fortunate that this had been arranged as with the additional numbers attending we would not have been able to fit into the previous venues. We are currently going through debrief of the evening as we do with all our events and I am confident we will again see improvements to this very special night of the year. Thank you to all that attended and congratulations to those that received awards on the night. A special congratulations and welcome to our five new inductees into the Hall of Fame in Margaret Shillingford, Wally Bonaguro, John Jenkins, Kenn Rogers and John McDougall OAM.

A recent innovation from our CEO Mark Easton and staff has been the ‘Volunteer Thankyou’ forums that have been conducted in some areas and are planned for other Regions in the future. We owe so much to our volunteers and it has been a pleasure to be able to establish this innovative way of acknowledging their efforts. These events have normally coincided with a Seniors (Over 60’s) Bowls Tournament, a film day and some training, if requested by the Region, and we have been fortunate to have considerable support from Local Governments.

Moonta Memorial Bowling Club was the venue for our inaugural Champions Week and they have set the bar very high for future host Clubs. The Moonta members were the perfect hosts making everyone so welcome and conducting a magnificent event. I am aware that the location and format was not to everyone’s liking however it was a first and like any new initiatives all aspects will be reviewed for future years. The greens were excellent, the setting perfect, the bowling second to none and the spectators provided with enthralling events. Once again the biggest challenge came from Mother Nature with a mixture of wind one day and rain the next but even that could not spoil a special week in our calendar.

Throughout the year several amalgamations of Associations have either been completed or are going through the process which is very pleasing to the Board and our Staff. The efficiencies that will be gained from these amalgamations will certainly make life a lot easier and bring our sport further into line with 21st Century thinking. Congratulations to those that have completed the procedure and for those that are still in the process, you have the support of the Board and Staff.

In closing I feel it necessary to remind Club and Association administrators of the need to receive, amend if appropriate and formally adopt all policies that have been or will be forwarded to you from Bowls SA.

A topic that is currently foremost in Clubs is the selection process particularly where the Open Bowls pennant competition format has been adopted. It is essential that Clubs ensure that their Selection Policy or Guidelines are in place; are well understood by all members and followed throughout the season to ensure that they do not face any Equal Opportunity challenges. Selection is one of the hardest roles within any Club as the biggest majority of bowlers believe they are better bowlers than the selectors believe. A closing thought:

Blessed are they who can play a sportBlessed are they who can still be taughtBlessed are they who accepts with graceTo play in any selected place

Enjoy your off season. I look forward to meeting many of you again either on or off the green.

business operators is $1,250. For the person smoking, whether an employee or customer, the maximum fine is $200. On-the-spot fines can be issued. Many Clubs have outdoor areas (such as verandas or courtyards) where patrons have been able to smoke. Since November 2007, smoking in these areas is no longer permitted if these areas are more than 70% enclosed. The dimensions of the space, or the use of plastic blinds or other structures to weatherproof outdoor areas, may cause the area to be considered enclosed. If the area is enclosed smoking is not permitted. An area without a ceiling/roof will not be considered enclosed. This ban on smoking in outdoor areas that are enclosed has applied since December 2004.

As of 31 May 2012, local councils and other incorporated bodies are now able to apply to have an outdoor area or event declared smoke-free.Applications need to be made in writing but before applying, please contact the Tobacco Control Unit on 8274 3451 to discuss your proposal.

Bowls Australia has announced that Community Development Officers will now been known as Regional Bowls Managers.

The change of title is a better reflection of the role that they undertake within the community; managing the growth of bowls, and will be easier for stakeholders to understand.

In South Australia the sale, distribution, use of tobacco and areas where smoking is prohibited is regulated by the Tobacco Products Regulation Act 1997.

Employers have a legal responsibility to protect the health of their employees and there is increasing community support for smoke-free, safe and healthy environments.

Laura is a rural town situated 40 kilometres East of Port Pirie in the State’s mid north. Like all small country townships it has a vibrant history. It is famous for Golden

North Ice cream which has been produced in the area since 1923 and is also the birthplace of renowned poet C J Dennis whose first poem was published in the Laura Standard newspaper. With a population of around 600 it is typical of the many small settlements that dot the landscape of South Australia. Like so many others the township also has a bowling club which fields both Men’s and Women’s Pennant teams in North Western Bowling Association. The club has around 50 members with the men competing in Boucher (1st Division) and Mahood (3rd Division) and the women in 1st and 2nd Divisions. Over recent years they have had some success on the greens with the men’s 2nd Division team taking out the O’Shaughnessy premiership in 2008/09 and then going on to secure the Boucher 1st Division title the following season. It is the first time that this feat has been achieved in the history of the North Western Association. It was a great win for the promoted club and the four rink winning team which included three father and son combinations. Max Kleinig had returned from skipping Premier One in the city and he skipped alongside dad Anthony; Todd Brand played, as did father Geoff and the late Brenton Prior and son Jake also played. In 2012/13 the women’s 1st Division side grabbed the Premiership for the first time in 54 years. There are plenty of positives as the Club moves forward and at the helm is a President who we are sure is the youngest in the State to hold this important position. Todd Brand was 22 years old and is in his first year in the important role. He is a young man with plenty of energy and a vision for the future and when he talks of his club it is with an enormous amount of pride. Mother Helen also competes in Pennant competitions and when I asked her to tell me a little about the family’s involvement in bowls some interesting facts emerged. Her father Charles Newman and his brother Jack were builders

and built the Mount Pleasant Bowling Club clubrooms. She would have been well aware of the time involved in the game and from 2006 she remembers the trip to Adelaide on a Sunday morning ferrying Todd to State Under 18 training under Coach, Leon Crane. In season 2007/08, aged 16, the young bowler made the Under 18 team and went on to represent the State in NSW, WA and Adelaide. Since that time he has gone on to represent the Upper North Region in the Country Round Robin and Prestige Medley and returned to Adelaide again this year as Skip in the Country Round Robin team. At such a young age Todd Brand has achieved a lot in his chosen sport and when one spends some time talking of his experiences and what he feels the future will bring it is easy to see why he is President of the country club. Todd began bowling in 2006 when he somehow found the time to play junior cricket in the mornings and lawn bowls in the afternoon. The enjoyment of that experience has stuck in his mind and is a driving factor as he looks to the Club’s future. “We have a strong focus on encouraging younger bowlers to become members of the Club” he commented during a recent interview. “Small country towns struggle for members but Laura has continued to attract younger bowlers. We have the youngest member base in the North Western Bowling Association. Our aim is to retain and promote our youth and we have two bowlers, one aged 15 and one aged 24, who have recently joined our ranks. They were recruited from tennis and cricket and in their first year of bowls both play in the men’s Division One side. Playing against the best Pennant bowlers each week accelerates their development.” He went on to say that like all clubs Laura has its problems around selection time but the development of the younger generation of bowlers is important to the future of the Club. “With a positive outlook hopefully the younger group of players will attract others to move from cricket and tennis sooner rather than later. They will be able to play bowls with the same people they played cricket and tennis with. It should reduce the generation gap and the perceived impression that bowls is only played by old and retired people.”

SA BOWLER | June 2014 | 7

Page 8: SA Bowler June 2014 Edition

As a welcome to players, Adelaide Shores hosted a BBQ and drinks at the start of both the Men’s and

Women’s Carnivals, giving members from all over the State a chance to get together for a bit of social interaction.

The 2014 Men’s Country Carnival was held in warm conditions, with the predicted heatwave not eventuating which allowed all games to be played.

Duane Edwards from Tailem Bend took out the Men’s Country Carnival Singles for the first time prevailing over good friend Darren Niblett from Murray Bridge in the final 25-9.The Country Carnival Men’s Pairs saw the Kadina team of Roger Spry and Bruce Hines team up to claim the title 23-10 over the Ceduna combination of Ben Barnes and Bernie Blums, while in the Country Carnival Men’s Fours the Port Elliot combination of Robin Binney, Lance Cleave, Dean Clohessy and Bronte Smallacombe teamed up to win their first title 18-9 over the team of Phil Whyte, Gerard Glynn, Gerard Berden and Steve Davidson of Birchmore.

The 2014 Women’s Country Carnival, played in the last week of March, proved again to be a popular event. In the Women’s Country Carnival Singles, Heather Richards from Port MacDonnell won the final 25-9 over Dianne Murch of Bordertown to claim the title for an impressive third year in a row.The Country Carnival Women’s Pairs saw Lee Anne Shinnick and Carol Shillabeer of Port Augusta come through to claim their first title over Christine Keller and Pauline Eichner from Hahndorf 16-11.Curramulka team mates Pat Joraslafsky, Yvonne Dodd, Sandra Redding and Cindy Thompson claimed the Country Carnival Women’s Fours title convincingly 24-11 over Dorothy Deed, Catherine Searle, Shirley Bennett and Maxine Northcott of BHAS.

Thanks must go to both the Marion and Lockleys Bowling Clubs for their wonderful hosting of the Finals, and to all the Clubs who hosted qualifying rounds of these two events. As always, without our dedicated volunteers, umpires and markers these events could not run so thanks must also go to them.

Country Carnival DrawsFor the last six years the Country Carnival draws have been included in the SA Bowler. While this has been an excellent way of providing information to all members, it has always been a concern that the need to close entries in time to produce the magazine has meant that draws were frequently incorrect at the time of distribution. Many entrants find it necessary to withdraw for a number of reasons and there are also many players who weren’t in a position to enter by the early closing date but since then find they would be available to play. Therefore to provide for the inevitable changes and ensure that correct draws are available the decision has been made to cease including the draws in the Bowler.Entrants will be asked to provide an email address at the time of entering, so that draws can be emailed directly to them. The draws will also be available on the Bowls SA website.

CHAMPIONSWEEK

2014

The inaugural Champions Week was held from April 24 – 30. The event will be hosted on a rotational basis, between country and metro, and this year Moonta Memorial Park Bowling Club did a tremendous job in preparing for and hosting the event and thanks must go to them for their wonderful efforts during the week. The dedication of their volunteers who covered a variety of roles such as green keeping, kitchen staff and bar staff was much appreciated and contributed to the fantastic event.

Many players commented on the fast pace and condition of the greens, as well as the wonderful food supplied throughout the day (and night).

Bowls SA would like to acknowledge in particular, Club Secretary Rob Ryan and President Kevin Coates for their work in the lead up to the event and throughout the week, and also the support of the Copper Coast Council. The event comprised a total of 140 games and players were, as always, very thankful for the commitment of the officials, both umpires and markers, who gave up their time to assist throughout the week.

Sunny skies prevailed for most of the week, with mild temperatures. The event almost concluded without any inclement weather, however with a downpour overnight, many players turned up Tuesday morning to see the greens underwater after a tremendous soaking. Thanks to the Wallaroo Bowling Club for enabling the use of their facilities for the first round on the Tuesday, while back at Moonta the green keeping team did a fantastic job working hard to have the greens open and in good condition to commence play back at Moonta in the afternoon.

During the week minor scheduling issues occurred when players advanced in different events, however the understanding and flexibility shown by the players affected was greatly appreciated, and the feedback taken will be used to make next year’s event bigger and better.

In the City…

Saturday Premier sides reverted to games played over 25 ends and the Adelaide Blues were looking to pick up their third consecutive flag in Premier One. In the Thursday Premier One competition Holdfast Bay

was ready for action as the players readied themselves for a charge at back-to-back titles and after a season of record temperatures and rainfall both clubs achieved their aim. It appeared to be a long season as the Bowling Gods let loose. Along the way our Saturday elite bowlers found themselves playing four Friday night games and a “double header” as the changeable weather had a major say in proceedings. Despite often playing in uncomfortable conditions there is something special about battling the elements with your friends in search of a Flag.

For the Adelaide Bowling Club elite squad it was a season of ups and downs but at the business end of the year the players again came out firing on all cylinders. Going into the Final series with a double chance the Blues dismantled Ascot Park to the tune of 53 shots in the Semi-Final. It served notice that

the playing group was on song as the team entered its third consecutive Grand Final. For much of the 18-game regular season Ascot Park appeared to have the competition at its mercy. However that first heavy defeat to the Blues found the club battling for a Grand Final spot. In the Preliminary Final at West Lakes the Ascot Park Lions met the Marion Hurricanes and found itself 26 shots down early. However a great comeback performance saw the club hit the front on the 93rd end before taking out the game 96-91. It is indeed a strange game that we play. Against the Hurricanes, Dave Stockham and his rink were high on the list of good players. Against the Blues the touch disappeared. On the final day of the year at Holdfast Bay, Adelaide won on one rink of four played, that of Brett Davis whose rink of Dave Thulborn, Chris Firth and Steve McDonald never missed a beat in a sensational 35-14 defeat of Dave Stockham. It was left to the remainder of Davis’ team to play smart bowls and a controlled performance by all 16 players saw Adelaide take the Grand Final 98-89. The nine shot victory sits the club’s current side alongside some of the best that the State’s oldest club has produced.

Pennant Season 2013-14

2013-2014BY JOHN BEVIN

AFTER THREE YEARS OF INTENSE ACTIVITY IN THE LEAD UP TO WORLD BOWLS 2012, SEASON 2013-14 PROMISED TO DELIVER A REGULAR PENNANT YEAR THROUGHOUT THE STATE.

18 | SA BOWLER | June 2014

Page 19: SA Bowler June 2014 Edition

WrapThe win also contributed to another bit of history. In the lower South East, Mount Gambier as the oldest regional bowling club in SA also picked up a Pennant this season. It would be at least 15 years since the duo have picked up titles simultaneously. In Premier Two North, at the same venue, Gawler produced a single shot Grand Final win over Kensington/Marryatville after a replay of the 100th end and an umpire’s measure. It will go down as one of the Premier competition’s greatest Grand Finals and Gawler re-enters Premier One after a lengthy stay in the Division Two North competition. In Premier Two South, Hawthorn, after a year in the second tier of competition, returned to Premier One defeating Minor Premiers the Brighton Bombers twice in two weeks over the final series. A hard fought Preliminary win at Brighton put the club straight through to the Grand Final at Holdfast. On that day the Hawks were irresistible in a 108-69 defeat of their opposition. Packed with experienced bowlers Hawthorn again looks ready for Premier One in season 2014/15. High quality northern side Salisbury will return to the Premier Two North competition and perennial elite club Payneham will play in the second tier after demotion at the end of the year. In the lead up to the Thursday final series a string of surprise results kept the competition on the boil and it wasn’t until late in the season that the final four became obvious.

A comprehensive defeat of Payneham to the tune of 82-36 saw Holdfast Bay look likely contenders early and with Prospect-Broadview also beating the Panthers, 60-55, two of the competition’s favoured sides entered what was to be a close Grand Final. In the final analysis Holdfast picked up a 50-46 win at Ascot Park to take out its second consecutive Pennant title. In the Premier Two North Grand Final, Tranmere defeated Semaphore 73-49 with all rinks up.

In Premier Two South, Hawthorn matched its Saturday side moving through to Premier One after a 62-43 win against a courageous Happy Valley. The Valley made the Saturday and Thursday Premier Two South finals as the players celebrated the year of the Club’s 30th Anniversary. Not a bad result. One metropolitan club that can be very proud of its performances over the season was Tranmere. Between Saturday, Thursday and Wednesday competitions the players picked up seven Pennants in what was a sensational performance.

Around the Country…

Despite heat wave conditions after Christmas, Pennant competitions in the country areas went on unabated with all the swings and roundabouts we expect. In the Great Southern Division One Saturday

competition McLaren Vale banked its fourth successive flag after a slow start to the year and some early losses.

In the Thursday Open competition in the same region Goolwa took all five of its teams into Grand Finals on the one day at Encounter Bay and came away with the Division One Flag; two of Goolwa’s sides playing off for the Division One flag. For the Riverland’s Berri Bowling Club winning Flags has become an art form. This year’s 32 shot Saturday Grand Final victory against Loxton however will hold special memories for those involved. The passing of club member and Bowls SA Hall of Fame inductee Audrey Hefford during the season saw the highly successful club’s bowlers go into the final day of the year with plenty to play for. Audrey had had a significant impact on the Saturday and Wednesday competitions during the first half of the year and she will go down as one of the State’s best ever bowlers. Both sides again picked up Pennants. Berri has now won five consecutive Saturday Flags and 12 of the last 15 while the mid-week Division One women’s team has gone even better taking out its seventh consecutive title this season. The crack team has been successful in 12 of the last 16 flags. There is always something different popping up in bowls and the following should make interesting reading. Ken Stokes was a member of Berri’s successful Saturday side while brother Barry played in Yorketown’s winning Division One team in the Upper Yorke Peninsula. Third brother Brian turned out for Moonta’s Second Division side and also picked up a Pennant. Three

Pennant Season 2013-14

brothers all from different regions and each grabbed titles this season. Talk about a gene pool.

Something different to ponder over; in Northern Yorke Peninsula, Wallaroo in search of an elusive Pennant entered the finals as Minor Premiers and with a double chance but went out in straight sets. It is amazing how often teams in both the city and country bow out in consecutive finals and the playing group from Wallaroo can take comfort from the company of both Brighton and Ascot Park this year. The Copper Triangle is an area of high quality bowls and Moonta which had won the previous two Grand Finals went into this year’s event looking to bank three in a row. However a strong Kadina combination took out the Pennant and will take bragging rights in season 2014/15 after a competitive year of bowls.

In the Lower South East, Mount Gambier Red took out the Division One Saturday Pennant with a long overdue win against the Association’s powerhouse Mount Gambier RSL Red. The Division One side won its last flag in 2001/02 with its Red team getting up. Prior to that the club also grabbed the 1997/98 title at a time when only one team was playing.

In the Thursday competition Port McDonnell Women’s side went back-to-back with a solid defeat of Mount Gambier to win two of the last three titles. The club has picked up the Pennant in 2005/06, 2011/12 and 2013/14 in a fantastic effort for such a small club. To put the icing on the cake Port McDonnell also grabbed the Open competition to go back-to-back.These are just some of the stories of the 2013/14 Pennant season.

Arguably Bowls SA’s most prestigious events, the Men’s and Women’s Prestige Medleys were held at the picturesque

Victor Harbor Bowling Club over the March long weekend.

The Women’s event on Thursday and Friday saw Eyre Peninsula emerge victorious in a thrilling one shot victory over Metro North while South Eastern finished third after a 4 shot victory over Upper Northern.

On Saturday the selected bowlers representing Metro and Country battled it out in the Schroeter and Kennedy Shields, in conjunction with the Kenn Rogers Trophy for the Under 18’s. The Metro men prevailed in the heated contests

The Men’s Prestige Medley followed on the Sunday and Monday with Metro West taking out the honours for the second year in a row over Yorke Peninsula and the Upper Northern men claiming third place over Metro South.

Thanks go to the Victor Harbor Bowling Club for their fantastic facilities, greens and their wonderful volunteers who kept all players and officials fed and watered. A thank you also goes to the Umpires who gave up their time to assist over the weekend.

After a season of weather extremes with records set and our pennant season in disarray; a situation no greenkeeper wants, after all we are paid to prepare

and maintain greens so that they may be utilised; the 2014 Federation Week in Canberra was ready to kick off. On Friday May 2, twenty greenkeepers including a handful of social members headed off in two 12-seater buses. Cold weather greeted us at our first stay, the half-way point of Hay. Apparently on the day we left it had been the coldest May day ever recorded in Adelaide. Needless to say the South Hay Hotel did a roaring trade that Friday night and their hospitality was commendable. After a night in the Big 4 Caravan Park we were off early to Canberra. The Pinnacle Apartments are situated near the Manuka Oval and it didn’t take long before all greenkeepers from across the Nation were meeting up at the local Eastlakes Football Club.Sunday was the official start of the week at the Queanbeyan RSL Bowling Club with registration, lunch and the first test in a Fours pennant format when the boys played the Big V and were victorious, 65 – 43.Monday at the Tuggeranong Vikings Bowling Club began with a Nuturf education session followed by Singles, Pairs and Fours. All SA teams made it through the knockout series which was encouraging and after lunch

they headed back out to play their 2nd test against Queensland. After being well down early on they

recorded a hard-fought win 77-67.Weston Creek Labor Club hosted play

on Tuesday which began with another education session presented by Gold

Sponsor, Syngenta talking on their insecticide Acelypryn followed

by a machinery display and a discussion session.

After lunch we headed onto the green again for the

3rd test against NSW

and again we were victorious 81-63. This was to be a big day for everybody as after dinner the 4th test was played under lights against the Big V with yet another win 68-59. Needless to say we took a bit of thawing out after that!Wednesday started off with a walk to Manuka Oval for a tour of the facilities which were fantastic but we were astounded to learn that the only toilets for the outer public areas were portaloos! From there we did a tour of Parliament House which was an experience to remember, and in all seriousness it is a building for every Australian to be proud of. It was great to see and hear how it all happens and the stainless steel flag pole is a sight to be seen; the flag being bigger that a double-decker bus! From there we travelled to the RUC Canberra North Bowling Club for a quick education session on the fungicide Instrata followed by lunch and then the Semi-finals.Nathan Pederson did brilliantly to come from well down to beat the previous Singles winner from NSW to make it to the final. Both SA pairs won their respective finals to make it an all SA Grand Final but unfortunately both SA Fours combinations lost to make that an all NSW Grand Final. On Thursday we travelled to Queanbeyan Bowling Club where Federation President, Wade Turner and his troops are based. Wade has a fantastic reputation and he wasn’t about to disappoint anyone; the greens and surrounds were immaculate. After another education session in the morning the 5th Test was played against QLD and again we were victorious 101-48. The Grand Finals saw SA finish runner- up in the Singles losing to Queensland; SA were champions of the Pairs and NSW champions of the Fours. Some weary faces arrived at the Belconnen Bowling Club on Friday morning for an open discussion on green keeping into the future. Some very diverse and passionate opinions were expressed after a week

of networking and sharing each other’s experiences within the industry which enabled us to recognise the differences and similarities between the four competing States. The 6th test was then played against NSW where we lost a closely fought game to eventually take out the series on a count back! This was the first time since 1987 that the test series has been won back to back since 1987 and the first time since 1999 that an away State has won it! The Wind up Dinner at Manuka Oval that night was an excellent finish to what was a most enjoyable week; the catering and hospitality at all clubs was very impressive. A special highlight of the night was being there to see Wade Turner receive Life Membership. The professional presentation of the greens and facilities at all clubs was inspiring and for the few younger apprentices on the trip I’m sure it was a real eye opener with regard to the extent of how far our industry has progressed and will continue to do so into the future. These events take a lot of hard work in organising and the combined forces of the NSW and ACT Bowling Greenkeepers Associations did a splendid job which made it one of the highlights of our careers. To all SA Greenkeepers well done and I encourage your fellow comrades to be involved so that we may all enjoy the next Federation Week to be held in Victoria in 2017.Thank you also to all our sponsors; the uniforms were again sought after by the other States.

With some new faces in the team and with youth leading the way the Wombats kept the winning tradition of the past few years alive. All up the team came away with four medals in the revamped championships, with the haul being one Gold, two Silver and one Bronze. That means four members of a team of six came home with a medal which is a great effort. Unfortunately the Wombats just missed out on the overall team aggregate trophy but it was a tight race. If only we could find some lady bowlers, we could take it right up to the NSW team. The pairing of Liam Buckley and Zac Guy in the B5/6 Pairs did the side proud defeating the Queensland team of Anthony Bonnell and Syd Achilles 18-9 to win the Gold Medal. These two young university students have been playing together for a couple of years now and are proving to be a force to be reckoned with.

In the B5/6 Singles Liam carried his Pairs form into the Singles to make his way into the Final but unfortunately had to settle for Silver on this occasion losing the Gold medal to Paul Kirton from Victoria in what was a very high standard Final.

One of our new bowlers, Chris Flavel, proved he will be a great addition to the Wombats team by winning the Silver in the B7/8 Singles competition. Unfortunately he came up against NSW player James Reynolds who was fresh from being named in the Commonwealth Games side to go to Glasgow later this year. All the same Chris put on a great display and was never outclassed. The stalwart of our team, Barry Charity won his game 21–19 in a closely fought tussle to successfully take out the Bronze in the B7/8 Singles section.

While our other new member Steve Quinn didn’t come home with a medal, he showed he will be an important part of our team and gained valuable experience. The team would like to thank our Team Manager and Coach, Steve Guy and our two helpers Jim Fawcett and Alex Edgar for their assistance during the trip. Barry gets a special mention for saving the team money by carrying everyone’s bowls in his car so they didn’t have to pay extra airline fees. The Wombats are grateful to DRSSA for the subsidy to assist costs and for their help in the arrangements. We also thank Clearview Bowling Club and the other members of our squad for their continued support.

The SAPSASA for Primary School Students and the SASSSA Secondary Schools, 2014 Lawn

Bowls Championships were held at Holdfast Bay Bowling Club on Friday April 4 and Monday April 7 respectively.

SAPSASA ChampionshipsThe SAPSASA Girl’s Singles saw Haylee Studham from Port Wakefield Primary emerge undefeated after the round robin games to claim the Gold medal. Madison Bailie from Mark Oliphant College won the Silver and Malory Strachan from Angaston Primary School earned the Bronze after some fantastic games. In an extremely close final Jack Trenorden (Lenswood Primary) took out the Boy’s Singles by one shot over Fergus Rowntree from Ardrossan Area School, with Danyon Greenslade from Riverton Primary School claiming the Bronze medal. In the Open Triples, Tanunda Primary School dominated which resulted in Tanunda 1 playing Tanunda 5 in the Gold medal match. Tanunda 1 prevailed with Lenswood 6 winning the Bronze.

SASSSA Championships On Monday morning the SASSSA Championships, for High School Students, began and after some superb games in the sectional play, the finals came down to a ‘Battle of the Brothers’ in the Open Singles, with Josh Studham and Nathan Studham from Balaklava High School battling it out for the Gold and Silver, while twins Preston Kaufer and Mason Kaufer played off for the Bronze.Josh claimed the Gold medal over brother Nathan after jumping ahead early, but despite Nathan closing the gap he ran out of ends and his young brother recorded the win.Preston prevailed over Mason by one shot to claim the Bronze. In the Open Triples the Loxton High School team finished strongly over the Heathfield High School trio to claim the Gold, while Mount Compass Area School netted the Bronze medal. Thanks to Holdfast Bay for the use of their excellent facilities and greens; and the volunteers in the kitchen, as well as the numerous coaches and markers who assisted on the day.

Super Sixes | Australian Sides

Following the Regional Night Owls Qualifying rounds the top four teams from each of the seven participating regions were invited to

compete in the 2014 State Night Owls Final at Walkerville on April 13.

Clarendon team Haffey’s Heros took out the title from runner-up Bellends of Port Noarlunga and coming in third were Raggies of Modbury. The Haffey’s Heros team comprised six players during the season and the four that played in the final were Gary Bennetts, James Goudie, Justin Williams and Dani Eley. The other members were Matthew Bennetts and Michael Williams. At the Awards Night, West End representative Andrew Smith congratulated the winners and presented them with their trophies.Thank you to Walkerville for hosting this year’s finals.

This year South Burnie, Tasmania was the venue for the Super Sixes and Australian Sides Championships held March 28 to April 3 and in

preparation for the anticipated tough conditions our players had spent time in the lead up preparing for the expected slow and heavy greens. In the initial event, the Super Sixes, Adam Forbes and Max Kleinig claimed SA’s only medal with a fantastic game to secure the Bronze in the Men’s Pairs. Both the men and women had excellent starts to the Australian Sides defeating last year’s winners NSW. As the week progressed the sides kept themselves in the mix until the home sides of Tasmania cut both teams off in their runs to the finish. Highlights of the week included the SA women’s nail biting win against old foes Victoria, claiming a payback for the SA v VIC Series loss in January and the men’s rink of Adam Forbes, Carl Schapel, Simon Dorr and Wayne Ruediger finishing second on the rink ladder, just missing out on the best performed rink by shots difference. A fourth placed finish for both sides, and a fourth placed finish overall was disappointing for the players, but they can hold their heads up knowing that they were in the mix and can take away from the experience for next year’s Sides Championships in Yokine, Western Australia.

THE SILLY SEASONThis time of year can be described as the “Silly Season” with a high percentage of members heading north for some warmer winter weather or putting the bowls away; not to be seen again until after the AFL’s special day.

It is also the time of the year when we all must attend our club’s Annual General Meeting and raise our hands to vote for the Board which we believe will steer our club in a direction of profitable stability and on green success.

It’s fair to say that just about every club throughout the State will have had changes to their Board of Management, which highlights the need for every club to have in place a working Strategic/Business Plan so that new committees have continuity that allows them to follow a direction set down by previous management.Strategic/Business Plans are not

as daunting as they sound. Bowls Australia have developed a simple two page template that can be easily filled out from your club’s wish list. So no longer do you have to reinvent the wheel or write a document the size of “War & Peace” - we have it available for you at the touch of a button.

Ian and I are more than willing to sit with a Club’s committee and work through the document to get it to a point of adoption by their Board which will provide a working document that can be added to and subtracted from at each Board meeting, but ultimately giving direction to each new Board of Management. If your Board would like to have the assistance of Ian or me to help out with your Strategic Plan, please contact us.

Unbiased Opinion

YOUR FINAL TRANSACTIONEveryone knows the importance of

having a Will. It is appropriate for a number of reasons to talk about

Wills, estates and disputes that can occur, and which are now occurring far more frequently than in the past.A Will will dictate what happens to your affairs, assets, belongings, property, and just about everything else you can think of that you collect over your lifetime.Everyone should have a Will, particularly after the day you start working and accumulating assets.Your Will should be reviewed frequently, more frequently as you get older, and when things change even more frequently, with new relatives, marriages and events that cause you to reflect upon your Last Will and Testament. Marriage and divorce can change a Will and at any great moment of change in your life, you should get legal advice about a Will and about what should be occurring in relation to it. Sometimes, just a chat with your legal advisor about the status of your Will will be enough. It may well be that it is still adequate for all purposes. The complexity of Wills does change depending on what stage you may be in in your life. For example, having children may mean you set up trust arrangements which appropriately deal with the issues such as payment of school fees, and the like.Dying without a Will, where you do have substantial assets, creates a lot of problems for those who remain. The cost

of administering an estate where there is no Will is far greater than that where there is one.Contrary to modern myths, your estate does not all go to the state in the first instance, where you leave no Will. It is generally divided up amongst your spouse and family members, and only in circumstances where there are none of those around does the state collect it.The second issue to consider about a Will is, what happens upon your death? You appoint executors to look after your affairs, and it is a good idea to often have more than one. Often, they are partners, and sometimes they are professional advisors. Whoever it is, it has to be someone you trust implicitly to look after your estate. An executor is legally responsible for doing everything in respect of an estate. It is an onerous position and many legal obligations in relation to it. In most estates, in my view, you would be well advised to at least get an initial appraisal from a lawyer as to what, if anything, you have to do, and whether or not that lawyer can assist you with the task.Sometimes, the task is quite difficult, particularly in an estate where there are a number of assets, and where there are assets such as shares.Given that we are a wealthy country in the main, most people require legal advice about estate planning while they are living, which should include their Wills. Planning while alive makes the path after death a lot less painful for your executors and beneficiaries. The obtaining of Probate or Letters of Administration (in the case of dying without a Will) can take some time. There is no such thing as an average estate. You may need to wait for up to 12 months for an estate to finalise, but many of them can go on for years, depending on the size of the estate. People who have concerns about a delay should raise it with the executors, who have an obligation to keep beneficiaries informed, and executors can always enquire of their lawyers, if it is with a lawyer, as to what is occurring.Very few estates are tidied up in a matter of a few months, and this needs to be remembered. The third area that is beginning to impact on our community is the area of challenging Wills and estates after the death. In the modern world, a family unit is often made up of a number of different parties, including more than

one partner over time, and children from perhaps separate marriages or partnerships. The area can get quite complex. The law in this state does allow a court to intervene in circumstances where they think a Will is inadequate in providing for someone that it should. The cost of such an exercise is not small and early intervention and early settlement of such disputes is paramount. What happens otherwise is that the assets of the estate can be consumed in what is often a bitter fight between the parties involved in the challenge. To know whether you have an entitlement, you will require legal advice from a practitioner who practises in the area. Given that we are living longer, that our population is growing, and that there are some elderly Australians with significant assets, you can anticipate that the area of disputation will probably increase rather than lessen - all the more reason for drafting it adequately in the first place if you can. There are limits as to who can make a challenge, and whether you can be successful or not depends on a range of factors. You would do well to get legal advice in any situation such as an estate dispute very early. If you have never created a Will, and you are working and over 21, put one in place. If you are an executor of an estate, consider getting some advice as to your obligations, and consider whether it might be better to have a lawyer do the work, rather than yourself. If you are involved in a dispute, get good advice and early. When you think about all the commercial transactions we do in a lifetime, we put a lot of effort into making sure they work out appropriately, such as mortgages, business arrangements and the like. The same effort and thought needs to go into your final business transaction, which will be the day your Will takes effect.

Aust-wide Tours We can all improve for next season• Seek out your accredited Club Coach and get them to

have a look at your delivery, stance etc. • Make time during the off season to continue with regular

“individual” practice, in all weather conditions, playing all lengths on both hands including playing to off line and in the ditch jacks.

“The Perfect End” DrillRequired 3 JacksObjective

(1) Roll 1st jack and draw within a mat length.(2) Roll 2nd jack and draw within a mat length.(3) Roll 3rd jack and draw within a mat length.(4) Accurate controlled weighted shot or drive at any jack/bowl target with remaining bowl.

• If first draw shot is outside of a mat length, your aim is then to correct with the second bowl and draw a shot within a mat length of that same jack.

• Never draw more than two bowls to the same jack.• If you miss drawing within a mat length to one of the jacks

with your first bowl, you will be left with a jack to carry back to the other end showing you missed playing the “Perfect End”.

your skills level.Give yourself a challenge

Make it “within a mat width”

REGION 1David Babb David started his illustrious bowling career in l969/70 at the age of 35 as a member of the Sorell Bowling Club in Tasmania. During his seven years at Sorell, David won the Club Championship Singles for three years and also won the Southern Tasmania and State Champion of Champion Singles and was runner up in the State Triples. Due to work commitments David then transferred to Rosny Park in Hobart in l976 and later to Penola in the Southeast. Here he joined the Penola Bowling Club where he served on the committee for l5 years and as President and became Secretary/Treasurer of the Lower SE Bowls Association for four years. David won numerous championships and had repeated successes at Country Carnivals where he was in the winning Fours, runner up in Pairs and a Singles winner. In l995/96 he joined the Mount Gambier Club. During his playing career David represented the Lower SE for 22 years in Round Robins and Prestige Medleys and at the age of 65 was runner up in the Open Singles. Other career highlights were a Singles win against South Africa; skipping the winning Pair against New Zealand and as Skipper of the winning Triples team against Scotland.Although now in his 80th year David is still a very fit and competitive bowler; still winning and still feared by competitors.

What does a Club do to recognise a member who has given outstanding service as a volunteer over a long period of time? This dilemma recently faced the Nuriootpa Bowling Club with the passing of esteemed member Ken Reichelt. There was hardly a day when Ken wouldn’t be at the Club doing anything that was required.Ken also served as a Board Member and his wife Shirley said, “He should have taken his bed to the Club as he was always there!” It was resolved that in recognition of Ken’s outstanding volunteer work and his attention to detail, the Wednesday morning volunteer group would be known as the KR’s Volunteer Work Crew. Each volunteer at their own expense purchased a memorial polo shirt embroidered with the Club and Ken’s Work Crew details. Ken’s wife Shirley and daughters were invited to present 14 volunteers with these shirts. Unbeknown

pennants. Merna was recently presented with her Super Veterans Badge.

REGION 7Region ChampionshipsKangaroo Island bowlers were keen to play the Region 7 Championships finals on home turf and this year being only the second time for the Island resulted in a large crowd of locals taking time out to barrack for the Island players. The Ladies’ Fours saw Birchmore up against Yankalilla and although the local team tried hard the Yankalilla four registered a good win. The Men’s Fours was a much closer game and when the last end began the KI team were in the lead by a single shot. The opposing team from Victor Harbor had several close bowls early but great bowls from Phil Whyte and Steve

Davidson enabled KI to register a win.In the Pair’s games the Great Southern team of Coralie Sheldon and Fran Radbone proved too good for the valiant KI pair of Pattey Burry and Claire Downing, while in the Men’s Pairs the KI pair of Darryl Hammat and Brenton Speed slipped well behind the Great Southern team of Graham Walling and Peter Guerin and despite coming back strongly Great Southern registered a 14 -11 win. During the afternoon Judy Bell and Brenton Speed recorded big wins in the prestigious Singles events. The Triples resulted in the Parndana team having a good win against Great Southern and the Mixed Pairs saw Great Southern win a tight game. Congratulations go to Kingscote Bowling Club; it was yet another example of Kangaroo Island doing a magnificent job of hosting a major sporting event. Thank you also to Sealink for their support.

Great Southern Women’s Bowling Association - Historic Event

The Final AGM of the Great Southern Women’s Bowling Association was held at the McLaren Vale Bowling Club on Tuesday April 22, 2014. For some it was a sad occasion but also a historic one. The Association will amalgamate with the Men’s Association on July 10, 2014 and will adopt the name of Great Southern Bowling Association. The Women’s Association was formed on May 29, 1956. The Association had recorded another great season with 501 players from 13 clubs participating in 30 sides in four Divisions for the 2013-14 Pennant. Margaret Borlase kindly donated the shield for the Division 4 Pennant. The Publicity Officer made mention of the wonderful coverage the Association received from the local publications; Southern Argus

in particular. The meeting concluded with the President declaring that the Great Southern Bowling Association be dissolved and the books and financial records be closed on July 10, 2014.

REGION 10Clarence Gardens On Wednesday January 29 with 60 club members in attendance, all attired in their Knights uniforms, Clarence Gardens Bowling Club President Pauline Herring welcomed Mr Jay Weatherill MP, Premier of South Australia and special guests. Other dignitaries in attendance were Steph Key MP, Member for the seat of Ashford; Michael Picton, Mayor of the City of Mitcham; Kristen Manson, Manager Property, Sport and Recreation, City of Mitcham and Mark Easton, Chief Executive Officer of Bowls SA.The Premier in his address highlighted the important role that sporting and other clubs play in local communities and the work carried out by club volunteers. He also conveyed and congratulated the club on their successful bid for a $97,000 Community Recreation and Sport Facilities Program grant to install a synthetic bowling green. Project supervisor and club grant writer Dean Cresswell stated that “this grant along with a $30,000 Mitcham Council grant will cover approximately two thirds of the cost of installing the green. It is estimated that the new green should save around $80,000 over its 10 year life taking into account factors like greater green availability throughout the year and a greatly reduced requirement for watering. The club and its members thank both government agencies for their generous financial support and extend an invitation to private companies and local businesses to also become involved in this innovative project through sponsorship arrangements.”After the speeches Jay and Steph were invited to demonstrate their prowess on the bowling green by delivering a number of bowls. Both showed potential for future development.Once formalities were concluded members and guests were invited to partake in a morning tea provided by Bedford Industries.

You Be the Umpire

A marker officiating at a major event is asked by one of the players to show them the “jack high” position. Can the marker do this? A player claims that his bowl, which has come to rest partly on the green and resting on the jack which was earlier played into the ditch, is a toucher. Is he correct? While checking bowls before a major tournament, the umpire notices that a player has painted a small red dot on one bowl in his set. Would this set be approved? A player’s bowl splits in two when hit by a fast drive. Who is responsible for agreeing to a replacement and what happens to that end being played? During a severe wind squall players are forced from the green until it passes. When they return to the green, players on one rink notice that some of the bowls and possibly the jack have moved but cannot agree on their original positions. What should happen?

The 21st National Friendship Bowls Carnival conducted by the Bowls Past Presidents Association of

Australia was played on the NSW Central Coast from April 2 - 8, 2014, and what a great place to hold such an event! With rivers, mountains and the sea in abundance it’s a tourist’s Mecca.Over 250 attended from all States and the ACT, including a strong contingent of 80 South Australians. Many went by car and caravan, others by plane as well as Winston’s bus of 30 bowlers and partners. In spite of some rain, four days of Men’s and two days of Women’s competitive bowls were played in good conditions. Our ladies set the standard, giving us back-to-back flags; the team of Dianne Leathers (Mannum), Kristeena Kirchner, Faye Rolton and Faye Campbell (Murray Bridge) being the only undefeated team and undisputed winners. What a great night they had when presented with their trophies by National President Bert Dodd. Congratulations! Our men were not to fare so well, with the honours going to Queensland 1st, ACT 2nd and NSW 3rd. After a great start, winning both games on the first day, the team of Peter Ward (Port Lincoln), John Kwaterski (Strathalbyn), Maurie Gerschwitz and

Vic Brown (Ardrossan), were overtaken by Graham Leathers (Mannum) and the Murray Bridge trio of Graham Rolton, John Campbell and Barry Kirchner, who were the best performed SA team and finished 7th overall. Both Barry and Vic’s teams won five of their eight games, but Barry had the greater margin. The facilities of the Terrigal and Ettalong Bowling Clubs were tremendous, with nothing in SA being comparable. Games were well run, with great greens. In addition to bowls, bus and train tours were included in the program, which were highlights of the Carnival week. In particular the 6½ hour cruise to four famous islands and four amazing waterways on the picturesque Hawkesbury River was tremendous. Those on Winston’s bus enjoyed a great 15 day holiday taking in weekend visits to local attractions and on their return trip, around the coast to Lakes Entrance, they included a Dolphin Cruise. At the conclusion of the Presentation Dinner, SA State President Rex Wilson and State Secretary Don Priestley were inducted as National President and Secretary respectively. The 22nd National Carnival will be held in Adelaide, May 13 – 19, 2016 and planning has already commenced.
