Workers protest against raids in London’s Chinatown as MPs debate the Immigration Bill (Pic: Socialist Worker)The Tories’ new Immigration Bill returned to Parliament for a second reading.Left wing Labour MP Jeremy Corbyn was set to force a vote as Socialist Worker went to press, so that some opposition to the offensive bill would be recorded. The government has tried to rush the legislation through, accompanied by scare stories about how immigrants supposedly abuse services. It will remove the right to appeal against deportation until after it happens. It will force landlords and other staff to behave as border guards checking on the immigration status of people they work with. There were two protests on the day. People in London’s Chinatown blocked roads in anger at a wave of immigration raids on their workplaces. And at a protest outside parliament organised by the Movement Against Xenophobia, Habib Rahman from the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants called the government’s actions “cheap posturing”.

Service“London would not be London without immigrants,” he said. “We service London—look on buses, tubes and hospitals.”Unite political director Jennie Formby said, “Anyone who cares about democracy should not be prepared to tolerate this hateful legislation. We will stand shoulder to shoulder with everyone fighting to see it gets defeated.”Joseph Choonara from the Socialist Workers Party said, “The bill is a brutal attempt to scapegoat migrants. It’s a green light for landlords to use racist practices. “It’s about turning people into border guards.”Jeremy Corbyn said, “Last week I was at Mile End tube. I saw two immigration officers dressed like you and me. People were surprised when they were stopped and didn’t want to work with them.“But two police officers said you have to show your papers. It made me think of Apartheid South Africa.”Jack Tan from Bradford told Socialist Worker, “This is a nation of immigrants and it’s about time the government stopped kicking us.”

Thousands told to get out - by a textThe UK Border Agency has sent out thousands of texts telling people to get out of Britain—including to people who have lived here legally for years. The texts say, “Message from the UK Border Agency. You are required to leave the UK as you no longer have right to remain.”Human Rights lawyer Suresh Grover received one of the texts. He put in a Freedom of Information request and was told that 39,100 such texts were sent out. Suresh arrived in 1966 and is a British citizen. He told the Independent newspaper, “I think it’s outrageous sending people random texts without knowing who they are sending them to. I was angry but I was also bemused, because of the work I do.“But I think people who don’t work in this area may take them seriously and be worried they don’t have the right to live in the UK. It’s horrific.”The texts are being sent out by Capita as part of a £40 million government contract.

Myths and vague numbers behind health tourism scareThe Tories produced two reports claiming that, contrary to what all experts have said previously, migrants’ use of the NHS is a problem. One Daily Mail front page said that “health tourism” costs £2 billion a year. The report it quotes actually puts the figure at up to £70 million. It adds this to various other vague figures to get to a cost to the Health Service from migrants of £1.7 billion. The report warns that, “There is a great deal of uncertainty in the results” and “all of the values should be used with considerable caution”.It puts the annual running cost of the NHS at £91.5 billion. So even if the vague figure were true it’s less than 2 percent. Some figures include people from the European Union who have a legal right to access the health service.

And they ignore the fact that migrants who work in Britain pay tax and already help fund the NHS.

A man and his wife were awakened at 3:00 am by a loud poundingon the door. The man gets up and goes to the door where a drunkenstranger, standing in the pouringrain, is asking for a push.

"Not a chance," says the husband, "it is 3:00 in the morning!"He slams the door and returns to bed.

"Who was that?" asked his wife.

"Just some drunk guy asking for a push," he answers.

"Did you help him?" she asks.

"No, I did not, it is 3:00 in the morning and it is pouringrain out there!"

"Well, you have a short memory," says his wife. "Can't youremember about three months ago when we broke down, and those two guyshelped us? I think you should help him, and you should be ashamed ofyourself!"

The man does as he is told, gets dressed, and goes out I into thepounding rain.He calls out into the dark, "Hello, are you still there?"

"Yes," comes back the answer.

"Do you still need a push?" calls out the husband.

"Yes, please!" comes the reply from the dark.

"Where are you?" asks the husband.

"Over here on the swing," replied the drunk.

Redi Tlhabi, warm-hearted, charismatic and loved throughout South Africa is as well known for her 702 and Cape Talk radio show as she is for her TV performances and Sunday Times newspaper column. In this astonishing debut, Endings and beginnings, she makes the painful journey back to her death-marred childhood, a journey in which she eventually finds peace and allows her demons to rest. Redi grew up in the '80s in Orlando, Soweto, with thoughts and emotions so intense they nearly swallowed up her childhood. It was a time when Soweto was under siege from two forces - apartheid and endemic, normalized crime. It was not strange or unusual to refer to so-and-so as 'the rapist' or so-and-so as 'the killer'. It was also at this time that her father - her hero - was violently murdered, his body discovered on the street, with one eye removed. The perpetrators were never found, and the neighbourhood continued to talk about how he had to be buried without his eye.

And then Redi meets Mabegzo: handsome, charming and smooth; Mabegzo, rumoured gangster, murderer and rapist, a veritable 'jack-roller' of the neighbourhood. Against her family's wishes she develops a strong and sometimes uncomfortable attraction to him. Redi herself doesn't understand why she is drawn to Mabegzo and why, at eleven, she feels the way that she does for this man known to many as a menace. Then he too is found lying dead in a pool of blood, two years after the death of her father. Redi has to remind herself to stay sane. Endings and beginnings is Redi's quest to find out the truth about the circumstances surrounding her father's death. As an adult she visits his grave and decides to find the people that killed her father and ask them why. She also goes on a quest to finally humanise Mabegzo who was hated and abhorred by so many when he was alive. She visits and speaks to his family, friends and neighbours and pieces together the life of this man who came fleetingly through her life but whose presence she would feel for a long time to come

Instead of spending money on decorative party accessories, here are a few things you can do on your own and yet stand out.

1. Just choose a flat woven basket for yourself. See to it that it has a wide base and the rims are not more than 2 inches in height.

2. Now, place about 2 empty containers, such as old jam bottles, beakers, or even glasses, on it. You can accommodate up to six glasses as well, depending on the size of your basket.

3. Next, take 2 different types of flowers and foliage in bundles, one type for each container. This obviously means that you can choose more than two types of flowers if you have more than two glasses in the basket.

4. Now, slowly place each kind of foliage in the separate glasses and do not commingle them with the other type as they look nicer in clusters. However, make sure that they form a canopy covering the base and the bottles below. Spread the clusters out a little bit. If you notice that the containers can still be seen from the sides, given their height, arrange some ornamental ferns and dry hay on the inner edge of the basket, just above the rim.

Voila! Your collage of variant flowers is ready and believe me they make for beautiful centerpieces.

A Flower Basket Collage

Potpourri for Bath-timesThis craft is the easiest thing to make and it will be able to lure your young one to take a bath without much ado! You need the simplest of things for this creation. You need to have a brightly-colored and patterned organza pouch (a muslin one would also do), a colorful ribbon, and an assortment of dry herbs.

Now, these herbs should be of the variety that have soothing effects on people. Check the list below to find out which ones fit your bill.

Page 29: SA Expat - UK Edition December 2013

1. Now take these herbs (any number of them, depending on availability) and make your kid stash them into the organza pouch.

2. Help him/her to make a beautiful bow with the ribbon while tying up the open end of the bag.

3. Next, make him/her hang it from the shower head or a faucet in such a manner that when you turn the hot water on, it runs through the pouch, washing over the herbs.

This will fill the bathroom up with the wonderful aroma of these herbs and attract your kid to enjoy his bathing sessions. Inhaling the aroma of these herbs will also soothe his body and help keep temper tantrums at bay!

Jarred Brownie MixHere's an idea that is not only easy but very tasty as well. Yes, you can gift this to a friend on any occasion or just like that and see her smacking away her lips to glory.

1. Take a simple air-tight glass jar. Now layer the ingredients in the jar just as shown in the image.

2. Take a decorative piece of paper and write: "Mix all the ingredients in the bottle. Then add 3 beaten eggs, ⅔ a cup of vegetable oil, and a dash of vanilla extract. Blend all the ingredients well to make a uniform mixture. Now bake for 35 minutes at 350°C in a well-greased pan". Place this instruction card on top of the walnut layer.

3.Now place the lid on the bottle. Cover it with a decorative piece of cloth and tie it up with some twisted jute strings or even ribbon swirls, if you like.

Tomato BredieOriginal recipe makes 6 servings

"This is a traditional South African meal, and is good winter fare. Bredie is an old Cape name for a dish of meat and vegetables stewed together so that the flavors intermingle. The gravy is rich, thick and full-bodied, and is obtained by using meat with a fair amount of bone and fat, rolling it in flour and browning it before the vegetables are added. The flavor improves if left a day or two before eating. Nice with brown rice."

IngredientsIngredients

1 tablespoon vegetable oil3 1/2 pounds lamb or mutton breast chops, chopped into portions2 tablespoons cake flour1 large onion, chopped2 1/4 pounds fresh tomatoes, chopped1 teaspoon salt1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper6 whole white peppercorns2 bay leaves1 teaspoon brown sugar1 tablespoon white vinegar1 dash Worcestershire sauce1 cube beef bouillon cube2 medium potatoes, quartered (optional)

DirectionsDirections

1. Heat oil over medium-high heat in a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan. Dredge meat in flour, and cook in hot oil until well browned.2. Stir in onions, and cook until onions are soft, about 5 minutes. Mix in tomatoes. 3. Season with salt, black pepper, white peppercorns, bay leaves, brown sugar, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and beef bouillon cube. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer for 1 1/4 hours. Stir occasionally, making sure nothing sticks on the bottom of the pot.3. Stir in the potatoes and cook for an additional 45 minutes, until the potatoes are done and the meat is tender.

Getting expert helpThe law can be complicated and you need the best advice. Solicitors can help with a range of issues and specialist solicitors can provide additional expertise.Getting expert helpWhen you have a specific legal issue, it's helpful to have a solicitor with special experience and expertise in dealing with problems or issues like the one you're facing.

All solicitors are qualified to practise law in general and firms of solicitors are able to offer legal services covering a wide range of matters. However, individual solicitors within firms may specialise in only one or two areas of law. If the firm of solicitors you normally use is unable to assist you with a particular matter, it will refer you to a firm that is able to help you. Alternatively, the firm you normally use may seek advice on your behalf from a solicitor or barrister who has more specialised legal knowledge in the area you require help with.

Areas of practiceSolicitors provide information to the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) about up to six areas of law in which they specialise. The information they provide is entered into our Find a solicitor database.

You can use the 'areas of law' drop down list in Find a solicitor to search for firms of solicitors based on the 'areas of law' of the individuals who work in them. Solicitors don't need to hold a specific accreditation or qualification in the areas of law they list as specialities on Find a solicitor.

Finding a specialist practitionerA guaranteed way of identifying a specialist legal adviser is to search for members of an accreditation scheme.

The Law Society and Solicitors Regulation Authority run legal accreditation schemes which help to connect you with the specialist legal help you need. All accreditation scheme members have demonstrated expertise in a particular area of legal practice, such as family law, planning law or conveyancing. Accredited practitioners need to pass a range of stringent tests, and assessments to the satisfaction of either the Law Society or the SRA, and are proven and monitored regularly. To find out more about these schemes visit our accreditation scheme pages.

You can find an accredited solicitor on our accreditation scheme search site.

Finding a specialist practitioner on Find a SolicitorYou can use Find a solicitor to see whether a solicitor is an accreditation scheme member. Look for this sign - Accreditation tick - next to the name of firms listed in the search results; it means that at least one solicitor in the firm belongs to an accreditation scheme.

How it all Began: ISBE’s meetings started in the mid 70s shortly after the publication of the Bolton Report in 1971 which led to the emergence of entrepreneurship as a legitimate public policy target and focus for academic research. By 1977 these ad hoc, informal meetings of the early small business and entrepreneurship researchers had become a full annual conference which is still running 34 years later.

The Institute is formed: Originally an annual conference hosted by a different university each year, it was not until 1989 that the researchers formally organised as the UK Enterprise Management and Research Association (UKEMRA). Three years later, in 1992, the name was changed to Institute for Small Business Affairs (ISBA). In 2004, recognising the increased focus on entrepreneurship in policy and research, the organisation became the Institute for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ISBE).

Our past activities and achievements: Through the years as well as the ISBE conference, ISBE has held many regional events in the form of doctoral work shops, work shops on all aspects of entrepreneurial education and research, policy think-tanks and debates in response to government iniatives and other contemporary issues, and practical, skill building work shops for small business practitioners. ISBE has produced many publications such as books, reports, research papers and conference outcomes. In addition to this ISBE provided a network for those in the field of small business and entrepreneurship allowing collaboration, debate and sharing of valuable insight, knowledge and best practice. In this way ISBE sought to contribute to the world of enterprise by disseminating knowledge and skills, platforming the latest research, supporting entrepreneurial education and encouraging debate.

RAKE Fund

Research and Knowledge Exchange (RAKE) Fund

The ISBE Research and Knowledge Exchange (RAKE) Fund provides financial support to new research activities from academics, third sector organisations, consultants and practitioners. The fund was created with the aim of assisting the exploration of issues, challenges and opportunities surrounding entrepreneurial activities and small firm performance and to encourage and promote cutting-edge research which is relevant to both the development of policy and practice.

Sponsored by Barclays and Economic and Social Research Council and launched in 2009, the fund has a call for applications each Spring

“Kristine Bell believes that more research is needed before carbohydrate counting can be recommended as a clinical standard in diabetes care. At the same time it would be a challenge to find a control group with which to compare, as the method is so common.- This is still the best known way to match insulin to meals, she says. But as doctors we must emphasize that the foundation for the way we eat is still a healthy choice of foods, and that insulin should be matched to foods, rather than excluding carbohydrate-containing foods in order to take less insulin.

The above is from an interview with a researcher and physician in a Swedish Diabetes Magazine. I don’t know if she’s talking about diabetes type 1 only, in which case the above is just stupid. If it’s also about the most common form, type 2, it’s just crazy.

Equally Stupid Advice

Let’s play with the idea that we’re talking about some other disease than diabetes. Then the advice given would be as follows:* If you have a peanut allergy, you should continue to eat “healthy” amount of peanuts and take a matching dose of allergy medicine.* If you’re lactose intolerant, you shouldn’t avoid milk. Instead, you should take extra lactase tablets with your milk to minimize discomfort.* If you suffer from liver failure due to alcohol consumption, you should continue drinking “healthy” amounts of wine. There’s always the option of a liver transplant, should you need one.* If you have high blood pressure, you should not eat less sugar, starch or salt. You should eat a “healthy” amount, and take some more blood pressure medication!* If you’re gluten intolerant, you should continue to eat “healthy” bread and match this with immunosuppressants. All these ideas are of course silly nonsense, based on erroneous preconceived notions about what constitutes “healthful” foods.

A Smarter Alternative

Diabetics should think the same way as all others that suffer health problems from certain foods: avoid them.Anyone who isn’t stuck in old ideas that healthy foods should contain a lot of flour/starch will have a new, revolutionary alternative:Less blood sugar-raising food makes diabetics require less blood sugar lowering-medication. All diabetics may benefit from this. http://www.dietdoctor.com/http://www.dietdoctor.com/

We provide a professional service and offer an honest and accurate diagnosis. We believe in enabling the patient to aid their own recovery through proper discussion, education and support and we never prescribe treatment that is unnecessary or inappropriate. We care about each and every patient and our personalised and individual approach is very important to us.

I care passionately about good health and wellbeing and believe that prevention is better than cure. For this reason I focus on educating my patients and my Pilates clients in key areas such as posture, alignment and exercise. However I do recognise that even the most well intended people have unexpected problems from time to time and so I also provide a full range of treatments to aid recovery. If you get the chance, please also take a look at my Osteopathy section for more information on this.

Osteopathy takes a holistic approach to treatment. What that means is that Osteopaths don’t just focus on the part of you that hurts but instead take time to understand all the relevant factors which could be contributing to the problem. This includes things like your lifestyle, work activities and leisure pursuits but also considers whether perhaps you’re having an unusually stressful period in your life which could also be taking its toll.I hope you like what you read in this web site and that I’ve been able to answer most of your immediate questions. However, please feel free to ask more by getting in touch with me either by email or phone. My contact section will give you all the information you need for this.

Kind regards and I look forward to hearing from you.

What are National Trails?

National Trails are long distance walking, cycling and horse riding routes through the best landscapes in England and Wales. In Scotland the equivalent trails are called Scotland’s Great Trails. There are 15 National Trails. Walkers can enjoy them all, cyclists and horse riders can enjoy the Pennine Bridleway and the South Downs Way, as well as sections of the other Trails. In total, England and Wales have around 2,500 miles (4,000 Km) of National Trail.

How did National Trails come about?

Walking in the wild and beautiful parts of Britain became increasingly popular in the early decades of the Twentieth Century. After World War II the desire to keep areas of Britain “special” and to protect them from post-war development led to the establishment of National Parks, Areas of Outstanding National Beauty (AONBs) and Long Distance Routes (now called National Trails in England and Wales). The first Trail was the Pennine Way, opened in 1965. How are National Trails looked after?

Each Trail in England and Wales has a Trail Partnership made up of the local authorities responsible for the path on the ground. Usually there is a dedicated National Trail Officer or Manager with responsibility for keeping the Trail up to the high standards set for National Trails. Maintenance work is carried out by the local highway authorities together with landowners often with the help of volunteers. Funding for National Trails is provided by national government through Natural England and Natural Resources Wales and also by local highway authorities and other funding partners. Promotion of National Trails is carried out by Walk Unlimited; a social enterprise dedicated to encouraging walking.

England Coast PathEngland Coast Path

What is the England Coast Path?

The England Coast Path will be a new National Trail around England's coast. It's not ready yet but work is underway to make it happen.

When it is complete people will have the right of access around all our open coast for the first time ever. But it is more than just a path, where appropriate there will be extra space where you will be able to rest, relax or admire the view.

A similar initiative has already happened in Wales, you can find out more on the Wales Coast Path website.

Why is it needed?

England’s coastline is spectacularly beautiful, rich in wildlife and hugely popular.

None of us lives more than 75 miles from it and as a nation we make over 70 million trips a year to enjoy its splendours. Walking along it is even more popular than lounging on the beach yet we don't have a right to walk around our nation’s coastline. Over half of our coast has no access, or has fragmented access that is of little value.

Even where the right to walk along the coast exists it is unpredictable. Some coastal paths are very well looked after but in other places they are impassable and it's not easy for the public to know what to expect.

The Government recognised the need for better access to our coast and in 2009 passed the Marine and Coastal Access Act. This started the process of developing a long distance walking trail around England's coast and Natural England are working hard to make it happen.

What benefits will it bring?

Once complete the England Coast Path will allow people to walk around the whole English coast. People will be confident that wherever they are on the coast there will be clear, well-managed access in either direction – whether they are seeking a short stroll or a more challenging hike.

New Years Eve, always a time for reflection and one last shindig before you start the New Year clean and fresh and that resolution of drinking less and gyming more always seems to be top of the List. Every year in the Scottish city of Edinburgh, approximately 80 000 people from all over the world gather for one of the biggest and best street parties, The Hogmanay. Hogmanay is the Scottish word for New Years Eve and is usually a bigger and more significant celebration than Christmas in the country. The festivities have somewhat changed from a couple hundred years ago where everyone used to dress up in cattle hides, run around the village and get hit with sticks by fellow villagers. With a combination of live music, an impressive Fireworks display at midnight, many street bars and a whole lot of boys in skirts, the evening is a success waiting to happen. If you are looking to get into the local culture a bit more, there is an exclusive event arena with an outdoor dance floor where you can listen to traditional Gaelic folk music and dance the night away with locals. Usually waking up on the 1st of January is not always as enjoyable as the night before where you were bringing in the New Year with a tequila shot. Luckily the the Scots have the perfect solution to cure your hangover blues…The Loony Dook. The event started in 1987, has grown in numbers from year to year and is now a fundraiser for charity. Participants and spectators gather at The River Forth, dressed in nothing but fancy dress costumes (taking a less is best approach) and brave the icy water. With outside temperatures reaching -1 degrees Celsius and the water only slightly warmer this is a sure way to shock the hangover out of your system. After all has been said and done, Edinburgh is a beautiful city filled with history, culture, cobble stoned streets and friendly locals. A great city to start your clean slate for 2014. First Festival Travel is offering excellent packages to this exciting festival:* 5% discount when booking online and mentioning SA Expat.* Coach and Accommodation packages from London.* Accommodation packages only – Hotel and Hostel.* Street Party tickets are included.* Opportunity to go to The Loony Dook or a day trip to Stirling Castle on 1st January.* Haunted Graveyard walking tour 1st January, in the evening.* Organised Bar nights – 30th and 1st with great drink specials and exclusive areas for our passengers.* 31st Dec – We organise a pre New Years Eve party during the day and the street party is in the evening.

The inaugural WTF World Grand Prix will be hosted in Manchester, the home of GB Taekwondo, from 13 to 15 December. Three other World Taekwondo Grand Prixs will be staged around the world next year, leading up to a Grand Prix Final at the end of 2014. Each Grand Prix will feature the top 35 ranked athletes in each of the four Olympic taekwondo weight categories for both male and female.

The rankings will be determined before each competition and the host nation of each competition will be allowed to add one athlete, per weight category for both male and female.

The top four ranked athletes qualify directly to the quarterfinals, while eight of the remaining 32 athletes are seeded based on their rank.

The Grand Prix Final will take the top eight ranked athletes from each respective weight category who will be seeded based on their rank.

UCI BMX Supercross World Cup Series 2014

The BMX Supercross is raced on a 350m circuit. Eight riders launch themselves from an eight-metre high ramp and race over a track alternating bumps, banked corners and flat sections. The battle for first place is fierce, as it is necessary to finish in the first four of the heats to have a place in the next round and then in the final. Depending on the lay-out of the section, the riders try either to land quickly in order to gain speed, or to gain height (riders reach up to nearly five metres high).
