DESCRIPTION

Looking for an innovative way to introduce oral health literacy into a classroom setting? In Philadelphia, St. Christopher’s Foundation for Children’s Community Oral Health Initiatives and Kid Smiles have instituted an “electronically distributed” oral health literacy program with a grant provided by Oral Health America. This program allows students to learn about oral health through reading, writing and arithmetic. Teachers can download these supplemental activity sheets, share them with their students and reinforce god oral health habits. During this webinar, Judy Gelinas, RDH will demonstrate the value of oral health “live” presentations to the value of electronically distributed oral health activities.

Kids Smiles Education & Outreach Programs

DENTAL CENTER PROGRAMS:

Dental Detective Academy (DDA)A comprehensive oral health education program designed

to be delivered in the waiting room by our Educators and

Volunteers.

Volunteer ProgramDental students support the delivery of the DDA and other special projects while gaining valuable exposure to the Kids Smiles model

of public health dentistry.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS:

EducationKids Smiles Community Educators provide innovative oral health education throughout the communities that we serve. This programming is suited for all ages and is delivered in Head Start and day care centers, as well as at public, private, and charter schools.

Dental ScreeningsKids Smiles Dentists and Dental Hygienists provide visual screenings, noting the overall oral health of a student, as well as possible decay or urgent need. These results are shared with parents and the school. Phone calls are made to parents of children with possible decay or urgent need, allowing for Kids Smiles to provide access to care.

PreventionMobile dental equipment is used in school settings to provide comprehensive preventive services by Kids Smiles Dentists. Results are shared with the children’s parents and the school, and follow up appointments are scheduled at our centers.

Primary Care PartnersThe Kids Smiles oral health education program is delivered in primary care waiting rooms by our Community Educators. This effort allows us to educate entire families about the importance of oral health while directly appointing patients with dental exams at our centers.
