After four decades of overseeing one of Greater Victoria’s most unique golf properties, Cedric and Dorene Steele will see the final putt sunk on their Prospect Lake Golf Course Nov. 30.

Following this golf season, the long-time owners of the lakeside nine-hole course are retiring and their son, gen-eral manager Shawn Steele, will focus on new endeavours.

“This decision is bitter sweet for Dorene and I,” Cedric says. “We have taken great pride and pleasure in watching people come to golf and

enjoy the relaxed camaraderie and scenic, natural beauty at Prospect Lake Golf Course.”

“I think for many families in the area, the golf course represents an important snapshot of time,” he adds.

The Victoria Home Reno-vation & Decor Show turns 30 this year, and to celebrate, host Evergreen Exhibitions is offering free admission to this weekend’s Early Spring show at Pearkes Rec Centre.

Featuring 160 exhibitors, the show opens Friday and continues right through the weekend, introducing home-owners to the latest trends and innovations in home decor, building and renova-tion, energy-efficient prod-ucts, landscaping and more, says Evergreen’s Doug Hope.

“We’ve come to Victoria for 30 years so to thank peo-ple for their support, entry to the Early Spring Home Show will be free,” he says.

Evergreen’s first-ever spring show in Victoria, fans of the fall show can expect more of their favou-rite themes. “Kitchens and baths are always the No. 1 and No. 2 projects around the home,” Hope says.

“Kitchen and bath remod-elling and new products,

especially energy-efficient products, are what people are most interested in.

“There’s a wide variety of home improvement, ren-ovation and home decor (booths). People can shop under one roof and compare the many different products and vendors.”

Those with recreation property or a large backyard in which to escape will also want to check out the 2015 version of the 3,000-year-old yurt that will be on-site, inspired by the traditional, portable Mongolian tent-like structure.

Evergreen is also welcom-ing the spring home show season with a give-away basket. Check it out at this weekend’s show, then sim-ply “like” their Facebook page, and follow up by entering online. The contest closes May 11.

“It also represents the culmina-tion of many years of privileged experiences that allowed us to keep the golf course going through ebbs and flows of a changing industry,” Cedric says. “We are most proud, however, of the won-derful friendships forged at Pros-pect Lake with the members and staff – many who have been with us for over 20 years,” he adds.

The family has no plans to sell the Prospect Lake property and is looking for those wanting to lease the property to provide rec-reational opportunities. “Our goal is to select a partner with recre-ational interests who will love the

land as much as we do,” Shawn says. Possible uses include moun-tain biking, rock climbing, disc golf or a day camp, and the low-bank water access makes the beach-front ideal for activities like kayak-ing and canoing, he adds.

“Our community promise is to ensure that the lake and the land will serve as a long-term legacy for the ongoing enjoyment of fami-lies,” Shawn says.

Zoned for day-use recreation/commercial use, of the property’s 35 hectares, 14 hectares are dedi-cated to the golf course, while 18 hectares remain as forested lands, and the remaining 3.2 hectares is protected land.

The family would also consider

several complementary programs, rather than a single lease, Shawn notes.

In the 1970s, Dorene was one of the first women to enter into the industry on the management side and “as one of the first women managers in the province, she did an amazing job,” Shawn says.

When the Steeles bought the property, it had no irrigation sys-tem and the greens were watered by hand. When a severe drought brought on a disease that killed all the greens at once, Dorene over-saw the entire replacement pro-cess, remaining undeterred when saturating rains followed during the installation of the new greens. “I was out there with a legion of

volunteers – the ground was so wet and muddy you couldn’t even lay down sod – it was sliding away. We were actually staking it down to get it to stay,” Shawn recalls with a laugh.

Starting at the course at 16, sometimes mowing the greens at 4 a.m., Shawn earned a bachelor of commerce degree and a diploma in golf course management. “I have a deep admiration for the golf course and the experience we provided people,” he reflects, promising a special final season as the family pays tribute to the members, staff and greater com-munity who have supported and enjoyed the course over the years.

“The other thing I’ll go away

with is that we’ve had such a strong community impact.”

At the same time, as his par-ents eye retirement in what Shawn acknowledges is a bitter-sweet decision, he will focus his energy on his recently launched business Charity Gift (charitygift.ca). As a long-time volunteer passionate about social enterprise, “I wanted to find a way to help out and this was a natural evolution of that,” he says of the site that makes it simple for individuals to donate directly to charities.

The golf course re-opens April 18 for its final season under the Steeles, and will close perma-nently Nov. 30.

The Blenkinsop Valley Community Association (BVCA) is hosting an evening meeting with artist, author and columnist Robert Amos.

Amos will speak on The Importance of Community and has authored several books with a particular interest in painting local neighbourhoods.

The event will be held at 7 p.m. on March 4 at Cordova Bay elementary school, 5238 Cordova Bay Rd. Everyone is welcome.

Last fall, the community association hosted a successful project, Artists in the Valley, with public artist and landscape architect Illarion Gallant. Established landscape artists were matched with Blenkinsop Valley land owners for the purpose of painting and photographing scenes from the valley.

Get ready for senior boom

Take a look through our special Saanich Care Guide today and you’ll notice a few rather telling statistics.

It seems our aging population – much like the rest of Canada – is on the cusp of a retirement and senior boom. No surprise there.

At the time of the 2011 census, about one-fifth – or 18.3 per cent – of the Saanich population was 65 and older. But compare that number to Saanichites aged 60 and up (30 per cent of the population) and you soon realize we’re in for a bump in demand for senior-specific services in the immediate future.

We’re a mecca for retirement, not only thanks of a mild climate, but also because the municipality is pursuing its goal of becoming an age-friendly poster child. (Admittedly, it still has a long way to go on constructing sidewalks to encourage pedestrians.)

Through the District’s enviable network of recreation and community centres, active living is accessible and largely affordable. Aging at home will be a key facet in maintaining health care services as demand increases, and the District does a good job of informing seniors on its available programs through Parks and Recreation’s Active Living Guide.

As Coun. Susan Brice points out, Saanich will soon embark on a recreation strategy for older adults, one that appeals to all levels of fitness and ability. But the municipality can only do so much. Our Care Guide also highlights how families do heroic work as they care for aging parents at home. As long as those families can access support services when needed, the model is one to applaud. Saanich Volunteer Services Society does an amazing job of plugging the shortfalls in public service through its network of 150 volunteers who help about 1,000 mostly-senior clients each year. Half of those clients live alone.

In his inaugural speech last December, Saanich Mayor Richard Atwell also vowed to create a mayor’s advisory committee on seniors issues, though no word on when that might be established, but the District is moving in the right and necessary direction to deal with a senior influx.

What is Saanich protecting with the Environmental Development Permit Area bylaw if they haven’t confirmed whether there are sensi-tive ecosystems on these residential properties?

Are we to believe that mayor and council in 2012 adopted this bylaw with the intent that something of value such as a sensitive ecosystem needed protection, but that in the three years since then, the District has done nothing to confirm there is anything of value on these prop-erties they’ve locked down or that the restrictions they’ve placed on these properties are in fact protect-ing anything?

Perhaps the intent is not what the bylaw would suggest. Is it to simply protect or prevent these properties from developing? Is it to somehow enhance the tree bylaw?

Looking at some of the proper-ties affected by the EDPA, it would

appear they are often larger parcels of land that border higher density. Are these affected properties then simply being made to create green space for over densifying the neigh-bouring properties?

Australian venisiona head-scratcher

My wife and I recently made sumptuous use of a Christmas gift certificate our son had given us for a meal of meals at Victoria’s iconic grand old hotel.

The food, service and ambience were superb – could not be faulted.

I asked a waiter in passing where my venison had come from,

thinking Vancouver Island or the mainland, and was stunned when told me it came from Australia.

On the walk home, I could not help but wonder about my son’s cost having to include bringing venison to Victoria from Australia, and the ship or airplane that brought it here burning tons of fossil fuel and pumping tons of pollutants into the atmosphere, all while we have deer romping in the streets and gardens of Oak Bay and other local neighbourhoods.

Is this a consequence of market forces at play, or some government-flaunted international trade agreement? Please, somebody, enlighten me.

Y OU MAY have seen the recent picture in the Saan-ich News about the odd old shoes found here in the attic of the McRae House. This interesting find got me thinking about life in days gone by when relying upon neighbours for assistance was second only to

having a large brood of children to help with the chores. Per-haps these words will ring true with some of you and hope-fully compel you to think about volunteering with us here at Saanich Volunteers.

Saanich Volunteer Services Society, located in the McRae house on Cedar Hill Golf Course, is a nonprofit society known as A Community of Neighbours Helping Neighbours. We offer one-to-one direct volunteer service for those who need help to live independently.

With only four part-time employees, we successfully pro-vide rides to appointments, shopping, support with garden-ing, friendly visiting and many other services to approxi-mately 1,000 Saanich residents over the age of 19 (but mainly seniors) through the outstanding efforts of 150 volunteers.

As a society that has existed since 1992, we look for vol-unteers to support the citizens of Saanich. In doing so, we realize that we are asking for your skills and time to help with our cause.

What may surprise you, however, are the findings of recent research that illustrates that volunteering with us may actu-ally be helping you.

Saanich Care Guide A resource for seniors & their familiesEnjoying life never gets old

SINCE 2006, the Dis-trict of Saanich has been recognized as a leading municipal-ity not only by B.C.,

but globally by the World Health Organization.

A report was created at the time, in which the District was lauded for its inclusivity of seniors.

The report also included a series of recommendations to better service the aging demo-graphic. Saanich has already implemented many of those recommendations, though the

work is still ongoing. “With the proportionate increase in our senior demo-

graphic, we’re lucky in Saanich to have a community seniors department. It allows us to do more,” says Julie Wallace, Saanich community programer for older adults.

Thirty per cent of Saanich’s population (109,752 in 2011) is over 60 years old, while 18.3 per cent is over 65 years old. Wallace’s role is focused on seeking out what’s needed and what barriers are out there for seniors.

Programs such as Take Heart, which is designed for men and women of all ages who have experienced a heart attack, heart surgery, angina or other cardiac event, is one example of the many offerings Saanich has put forth, she said.

“Take Heart is targeted for a specific group. It’s all

part of trying to accommodate for the increase in the number of seniors as we move into the demographic shift,” she says.

A big part of the thinking that goes into Saanich’s pro-gramming is creating an inviting program and ensuring it reaches isolated seniors, whether it’s an aquafit class or educational seminar on falls prevention.

“We find one of the hardest things is getting people to the rec centre for the first time. We’re blessed with first rate facilities that host all sorts of programming, but the hard part is still as simple as getting someone to show up,” Wallace says.

“Stepping foot in a centre, until you do it, you’re ner-vous about it, and yet most people stay with the class once they start it.”

It’s all part of aging in place, or staying at home. The longer you’re there, the more necessary it is to retain your mobility and independence, Wallace added. It’s a common theme considered in the District.

Open the Saanich Active Living Guide and there are clear indicators of the intensity levels for each class – the guide uses one heart for lower activity levels and three hearrts for the higher levels. Most activities are open to all age groups.

Last year, Saanich updated its original 2006 report as an age-friendly city, filling in the many improvements that have been made using a best-practices mentality.

“It’s a lens to put over all of our developments and initiatives, to ensure the best practices and age-friendly accommodation,” Wallace said. “We’re always asking ourselves, ‘How is recreation meeting that mandate?’” •

This demographic shift is occurring worldwide and in 2008 Saanich participated in the World Health Organization Age-Friendly Cities Project. As Chair of Healthy Saanich at that time, I had an opportunity to work with a wide range of professionals and volunteers to help define the best methods of planning to make our community more flexible and responsive to the needs of an aging population.

Areas of importance include defining best practices in outdoor spaces, buildings, housing, social inclusion, recreation and community support and health services.

It is now time for us to focus on an Older Adult Recreation

Strategy to ensure that our programs are available for the widest range of seniors regardless of age or ability.

The social benefits that result from participating

in fun and fitness ensure maximum health benefits and allow seniors to live independently for as long as possible.

We know that trans-portation and finances are potential barriers for someone choosing to take part in healthy recreation activities so it’s critical that these needs are met.

The physical and mental well-being of our older residents is so important to ensure

they have a full and happy life. As Chair of the Parks Trails

and Recreation Advisory Committee of Council, I look forward to working on this important strategy.

We know that if we make our community accessible, inclusive and safe for seniors that in fact it will be accessible, inclusive and safe for all ages in Saanich. •

In many global cul-tures both pres-ent and past, elders have been supported within the family.

But in North America and other Western coun-tries, supporting seniors has not only become an industry unto itself, it’s also put a new demand on social programs who strive to fulfill their com-munity mandates.

“There’s been a demo-graphic shift in the Cana-dian landscape, and many of the challenges we’re facing with our aging pop-ulation used be dealt with in the family network,” said Patricia Jelinski, CEO of United Way Greater Vic-toria.

“We have people who’ve never been mar-ried, or never had chil-dren, or they’re divorced. Whatever the case, they’re alone, and some-how the family network has eroded.”

That erosion leads to isolation, which is a cata-lyst for depression, mal-nutrition and premature death, Jelenski said.

Targeting isolation is key, and there’s no one way to do it. People slowly grow apart from their network and are largely unaware when they’ve slipped into a state of depression.

United Way supports a variety of seniors pro-grams in the region by funding organizations such as James Bay New Horizons, Silver Threads and Saanich Volunteer Services Society.

“Programs pull people into the community and provide a sense of belonging, so it’s about making sure there are pro-grams available for people to belong to in the area where they live,” said Lee Anne Davies, director of community investment with United Way Greater Victoria.

“You need that network, so people will be there to notice if your health starts to fail,” Davies said. “Sometimes you don’t notice or are in denial, but others will look out for you.”

Local philanthropist Bev King is a United Way supporter who stepped up to create a Sunday dinner program at the James Bay New Horizons community centre, making Sun-days a little less lonely,” she said.

Inspired by friend, King reached out to the New Horizons through United Way to discuss ways she could help them to make Sundays a whole lot more fun and meaningful for local isolated seniors.

It started in October with a bi-weekly Sunday dinner program with nutritious themed hot meals, entertainment and games that proved to be very popular. The program has grown to become a weekly event, thanks to King’s support.

“I think about how much the elderly peo-ple in my life have given to me, to my family and to my world,” King said. “This genera-tion has been through so much in com-parison to my generation. Giving to create something as simple as a welcoming din-ner event just for those seniors who are on their own, it’s worth it just to see them having such a good time together over a classic Sunday dinner.”

It’s been a long road for Robyn Hamilton and her three sisters.

Their 83-year-old mother was diagnosed with dementia in 2011, and the four sibling have split duties, in addition to home support, to help their

mom continue to live at home in Saanich.The dementia actually dates back further, but it

took some time to identify and diagnose, Hamilton says.

“One day, she had decided she wouldn’t cook any-more and we didn’t take it as a sign. The multitasking of cooking was too much,” she says.

In hindsight, Hamilton’s family realized the signs had been there nearly four years prior to diagnosis. Her mom (who the family asked to remain anony-mous) lost her husband in 2004. They were a team, the kind of soul mates who finished each other’s sen-tences, Hamilton says.

The role reversal is poignant for Hamilton, as she was once the dependent child in need of gentle care from her mom. Now, it’s her mother taking time to look at every little window display on the street, constantly filled with a sense of amazement, Hamilton says.

“Dealing with (dementia) is not an easy thing at first, but I feel badly for people who are away and don’t get to share the time with a parent (aging) with it,” Hamilton says. “It’s such a time of vulnerability.”

Dementia is looming as a worldwide epidemic, with 35 mil-lion already suffering from the disease – more than the popula-tion of Canada.

Once Hamilton’s mom was assessed by Island Health, the sisters rallied to create a more complete monitoring sched-ule, ensuring mom was taking her medicine and getting to necessary appointments. Mom was originally diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, but was re-diagnosed with vascular dementia as her symptoms progressed at a slower rate.

Studies show the brunt of adult children taking responsibil-ity for a parent with dementia are the daughters.

“What’s interesting to see is it’s often a daughter that takes action, but either way, it’s always a difficult decision to make if the parent can stay at home, and finding the right amount of care,” said Gail Snider, executive director of Saanich Volunteer Services Society.

The volunteers from SVSS have been a “Godsend” the last few years, Hamilton says.

But she and her sisters are now at a crossroads. Two of the three are in town and at least one of them is with

mom each day, in addition to 30 to 40 hours of home care per week. The fourth sister lives in Langley and takes mom for a full

week every two or three months.But now mom wants to move homes, and it isn’t an easy

situation.“As we’re headed to a higher level of care it’s unnerving,”

Hamilton says. “It’s reaching a point now where it’s harder for us than it is for her. She says she wants to move, she says she’s lonely even though she sees so many people. Every time we look at a new place for her she declines.”

Mom is driven daily to a lodge in Oak Bay where she partakes with a dementia-oriented group. It took three months to settle in, and now it’s a key part of her stimulation, Ham-ilton says.

“She’d soon realize during the car ride where we were headed and ask, ‘We’re not going to that lodge are we?’ Then one day she called me to ask when we were going next.”

If it wasn’t for a keen sense of humour, the situation could be a lot more difficult, Hamilton adds.

“Mom was always funny, and she still is. She has her spontaneity and wit, and it brings relief.” •

SAANICH VOLUNTEER Ser-vices Society may boast as many as 150 volunteers, but it’s still not enough, says longtime board member

Blair Matheson.“Some put in more time then oth-

ers, but it isn’t really a matter of how much time you put in, it’s just a mat-ter of how many volunteers we get,” he says.

In addition to being on the board, Blair also drives seniors once a week, while his wife Laureen drives

three to four days per week.Driving is the bread and butter, but

there are other ways to volunteer, says Laureen, a lifelong Saanichite.

“You have your regulars that you drive, but other days you’re on call to help whoever needs it, so you not only maintain ongoing relationships but meet new people, too.”

Every person has a story and brings sometimes 80 to 90 years of insight and knowledge.

“You look forward to it,” Blair says.Keeping seniors mobile through

driver services is also a key element for the new Better at Home move-ment, which aims to keep seniors

living at home in a healthy way longer.

Studies are showing that people are happier and

healthier the longer they can live in their own home. It also eases the burden on the health care sys-tem while opening up spots for those who need assisted living.

Better at Home is set to take off later this spring, based out of Broadmead

Care. One of the benefits

is Better at Home will cover the cost of having a cleaner visit the home. However, the program reassuringly depends on the person’s ability to actually maintain their indepen-dence.

“We’re at a new place where baby boomers are independent longer,” says Gail Snider, executive director of Saanich Volunteer Services. “It used to be that caring for elders was done within the family.”

Now that seniors’ desires for inde-pendence – namely, living at home – are being recognized, communities can better serve them, Snider adds.

“It all comes back to volunteers, which we’re constantly in need of (at Saanich Volunteer Services),” Blair says. “In some cases, volunteers use their expertise, such as accountants doing free tax returns.”

But mostly, it’s drivers that are needed.

“You’re not just driving, often you’re escorting someone into an appointment, doctor or otherwise, filling out forms,” Laureen says. “Or you’re asked to shop with them or just go for a walk. One thing for sure is you’re always talking.” •

L IFE IS a give and take for Ivan Swed-berg, a regular volunteer at the Vet-erans Health Care Centre, a part-nership between Veterans Affairs and Broadmead Care.

Swedberg is a regular facilitator of con-

versation and coffee, and has been since April of 2014.

“My mom is 100 and she lives in Sas-katchewan where she receives volunteer care so this is a type of payback, in a way,” Swedberg says, who previously spent three years volunteering with Alzheimer Soci-

ety’s Minds in Motion program at George R. Pearkes Community Centre.

“I enjoy it, I get a lot of it and you feel good at the end of the day, these guys are real characters.”

The Veterans Care Centre is a day pro-gram and Swedberg shows up once a week for four hours, during which time he chats with the visiting vets as they engage in an activity and break for a meal.

“At any given time we have about 200 volunteers, we really do rely on them to make our programs and services success-ful,” said Kelly Sprackett, co-ordinator of volunteer services at Broadmead Care. “We have a stable core of volunteers but we also have a regular turn over of about 90 people, so we’re always in need of more.”

Broadmead has been successful in recruiting students, but there is an ongoing need for retired or mature volunteers who can handle a more challenging role with a level of independence.

While the veterans visiting during day programs are blessed to be living at home, 90 per cent of the residents at Broad-mead have moderate to advanced dementia, and improving their quality of life hinges on volunteer contribu-tions.

“We’re looking at a shift, where we’re moving volunteerism away from sup-porting larger, activity groups towards smaller activities, creating more one-on-one time for person-centred care,” Sprackett says.

“That way we can support (residents) and examine their interests and engage them in a way that’s meaningful (for them).”

It also means engaging with people in activities they don’t feel confident in doing on their own, such as with the residents of Broadmead’s Nigel Program for adults with disabilities between 19 and 55 years old at the time of admission.

The call for volunteers is easy, as it can be a matter of a few hours a week.

“In our Nigel and Harriet houses, one of the other areas in which we need help is people willing to escort residents to their health appointments in the community, rid-ing the Handy Dart with them,” Sprackett says. •

W illiam D. Kello Wil-son started his trucking and deliv-ery company in 1962. By 1980, he

expanded into transportation and there is still road ahead for the 83-year-old who hasn’t yet retired from his job behind the wheel.

His son, John, manages the com-pany, while Kello does what he’s always done best: driving buses and vans.

The semi-retired Saanich resident also drives twice a week for Saanich Volunteer Services Society, where he escorts some of the 1,000 older and younger regular users of the service to appointments and engagements that keep them independent.

“Doctor offices, shopping malls, groceries, whoever wants to go and wherever they want to go, that’s what we’ll do,” says Wilson, one of 150 volunteers with SVSS.

Gone are the days when Wilson regularly bused a load of school age kids to Mount Washington (gone too is the snow, for that matter). Back then he’d open the door and the

kids would race out. He’d open the storage compartments and the kids would ravage through the compart-ment for their gear.

Driving is a much more civil expe-rience now, he says.

“Most people I drive use a walker. Sometimes we visit their spouse in a (care) home, lots of visits to the hospitals. Or haircuts, we do that a bit, too.”

Wilson volunteers because he enjoys the interaction, and because he might one day need to rely on the service himself.

“Maybe a few years down the line, that’s the way I look at it. But you know, you’ve got to enjoy dealing with people if you’re going to do this, and I sure do. Everyone is so appreciative and grateful.”

If there’s one gripe as a volunteer driver, it’s finding a car parked in a handicapped stall with-out the pass hanging from the mirror.

Otherwise, you won’t

hear a negative word from Wilson. “One thing I notice, it’s often peo-

ple who’ve lost their spouse that I drive, because it was their spouse who did the driving.”

Wilson has five grandkids, while Wilson’s Transportation has a fleet of 140, including buses, vans and shuttles. •

Discovering Iceland and Land Rover’s new sportReykjavik, Iceland.It’s as though we are driving over breakfast cereal.The “crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch” sound of the crisp snow below the all-new 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport’s cabin is both appetizing and unnerving.The studded tires bite into the slip-pery surface, which calms the nerves but visibility is slim to none – save that illuminated by our headlights – and traction changes after every rotation of the rubbers. Yet, I have confidence in myself, the tires and a vehicle whose DNA stems from a lineage of predecessors born in environments devoid of traction.Though it’s 9:08 a.m., the sun has yet to show itself and a blanket of pitch black envelops the country. To add to the ambiance, Iceland is a place where mythical beings are embedded in its folklore! As we traverse the topography, it’s almost as though one of the Norse gods, or trolls, is looking over us from above and shaking a sifter of powdered sugar. This dusting of snow is a fanciful act of beauty in the dark setting.I can’t see much around me. At all. But I know that one side of the trail we’re navigating is a steep drop off. While I’d love to drift the compact luxury SUV through some fantastic curves on these abandoned roads, now is not the time to try to be a hero. I’ll wait for another opportunity and the absence of a cliff.In 100 metres, we will be turning left onto a street whose name I couldn’t pronounce correctly even if the prize was a large sum of money. Streets in this part of Iceland are not marked per se. We best follow the GPS-based instruction if we want to stay on track.Iceland’s sliver of sunlight per day during the winter

It might be frigid and rough outside, but not from where I’m sitting.The Discovery Sport will be available with one engine in Canada, and a great one at that. It’s a 2.0L, turbocharged 4-cylinder with 240 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque. It’s then matched with a 9-speed automatic transmission whose shifts are as smooth as some of the ice we’re driving upon. It doesn’t feel underpow-

ered yet is relatively humble in power numbers. Regardless, for what most people will do with this, it’s plenty.There’s also room for up to seven passengers (there’s a 5+2 configuration with stadium seating available) and a wading depth of 600mm (24-inches), which we tested out as we crossed a river. Yes, a river. Just don’t open your doors for any reason in the process.Other premium features include six USB out-lets, 829L of cargo space behind the second row seats and an infotainment system that is fairly intuitive to use.Throughout the day, our travels took us over almost every imaginable surface in Iceland: snow, ice, gravel, rocks, rivers, pavement, water and more.When we ended our adventure in Reykjavik, the “tap,

tap, tap, tap” of the studded tires resembled that of a mouse tap-dancing. The pitter-patter over the cobblestone streets meant our day was done, but not without being filled with everlasting memories. Iceland, a country that is hauntingly barren yet its winter beauty suggests a feeling of warmth (along with its geothermal baths and activity.)And the companionship of the Land Rover Discovery Sport only added to the magic of the world’s northern-most capital city. The Land Rover Discovery Sport is set to arrive this spring and has a starting MSRP of $41,490.

Not that long ago, if an all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicle was on a buyer’s shop-ping list, the options were largely limited to SUVs and trucks. Today the automotive landscape has exploded with manufacturers offering many more AWD vehicles. In fact, 48 percent of all vehicles purchased in Canada come with AWD or four-wheel drive (4X4). For Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Can-ada (Formerly Chrysler Canada) the percentage is even higher, at roughly 58 percent. Thanks, in part, to the success of the Jeep brand and the many vehicles sold under that off-road-ready marque. The latest entry, the Jeep Renegade, will be arriving at dealerships around April but just last week I had a chance to drive this small Jeep in classic Cana-dian winter conditions just outside of Montreal.

LooksThe setting for the winter driving pro-gram was at ICAR, an enthusiast’s racing facility built on the abandoned aprons and taxiways of the old Mirabel airport, including a slalom course, road coarse and off-road adventure. The bold orange Renegade instantly jumped out against the howling wind and at-times, whiteout conditions. The Renegade is built in Eu-rope on the same platform that Fiat uses to make the all-new Fiat 500X. This cost sharing, multi-vehicle offensive is what

has helped Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) to be so successful over the past few years. The engineering and design was done in Michigan to insure the Renegade has all the classic Jeep char-acteristics, from the round headlamps and classic Jeep grille, to the trapezoi-dal wheel arches, appropriate ground clearance and overall bold styling. The Renegade is smaller than the Compass and Patriot models in the lineup, helping to promote the red-hot, small crossover segment even further. InsideWith a high seating position and boxy roofline, the Renegade has a lot of headroom and large windows, making

this compact crossover feel open and airy. The dash and surrounding trim is filled with eye-catching touches, like the speaker grilles and air vents that come painted for more panache. The front seats are supportive and provide a nice look down the long hood, making this feel more “trucky” The back seats offer plenty of room in this class and the cargo area is what Jeep calls class leading. Prices start at $19,995 for base Sport model with front wheel drive (FWD) and the first AWD model starts at $25,995. The volume leader will be the North trim with alloy wheels, starting at $27,494 for an AWD version. The problem will be the higher end trims,

like the $31,995 Limited, that look pricy compared to a bigger to a compact SUV, like a Honda CR-V, with a much more powerful engine, vastly bigger interior and a $30,000 AWD starting price.

DriveFCA didn’t just have the Renegade to drive in frozen weather, rather a selec-tion of the seventeen vehicles they offer with AWD or 4X4 capability. They were clear to point out that nine of the twen-ty-six models have AWD available even on the base trim. The Renegade’s base AWD system is a lighter weight active powertrain that can disconnect the rear wheels to save fuel but reconnect them in a fraction of a second if the tempera-ture drops of the windshield wipers are turned on. On dry pavement, the system only needs to detect the slightest wheel slippage to engage the AWD capability. In addition there is a terrain select knob in each model that lets the driver choose between auto, snow, sand, mud and

rocks to alert the Renegades’ traction control, stability control and engine/transmission electronics to keep the Jeep moving in different situations. The ultimate is the AWD system with a low setting for crawling over rocks, some-thing Jeep purists appreciate.

VerdictThe Jeep Renegade follows on the heels of some other stylish compact crossover vehicles like the Kia Soul and Nissan Juke that provide a bit more flair, rather than just practicality. This new Renegade also has the advantage of being equipped with two sophisti-cated AWD systems to keep it ahead of the pack. The base engine is a 1.4L turbo 4-cylinder with 160hp but this model is only available with a 6-speed manual transmission; if the buyer wants and automatic, the larger 180hp 2.4L 4-cylinder is fitted with a class leading 9-speed automatic. There is a whopping $2,990 premium to get the larger engine and automatic on the Sport trim and just $1,495 on the North, excluding the price premium to get AWD. At the end of the day this Jeep has a very attractive exterior and interior and is something fresh in one of the hottest segments in the market. The price can jump very, very quickly if the buyer wants AWD and automatic. Time will tell if buyers will spend the extra to buy the higher end models.

You’ll probably see, hear and read much about an all-new Volvo called the XC90 in the coming months. The XC90 will be the first com-pletely new, all-Volvo vehicle in a very long time and that’s mainly because of what’s been happening, behind the Volvo logo, in recent years.The XC90 is the first vehicle built on a new and adaptable “SPA” chassis structure designed for large and midsize vehicles. “The XC90 is the first of eight new models within the next three years that will be built on this new adaptable platform,” said Marc Engelen, President and CEO of Volvo Cars of Canada Corp. Volvo is also currently working to a new “CMA” small car platform. It will underpin and spawn a new generation of smaller vehicles and, according to Engelen, some of these will also be coming to Canada. Good news for Volvo fans who lament the discontinued importation of its smaller 30 and 40 series vehicles. The first production Volvo car was made in Sweden way back in 1927. Designed to survive the country’s rough roads and cold temperatures, it was nicknamed “Jakob”. Structurally strong vehicles with highest level of passenger safety have become fundamental Volvo qualities and the brand has a “Designed around you” build philosophy.Marc Engelen has been with Volvo for 22 years and served the company in Sweden, Germany and Belgium before accepting the Canadian leadership appointment in 2012. He was part of the Volvo negotiation

group that led to the Zhejiang Geely Holding of China takeover of Volvo Cars, in 2010. The trucking, heavy duty and marine sides of the business are now under separate ownership, called AB Volvo. Both companies share the Volvo brand name and logo and co-operate in running the Volvo Museum.Prior to 2010, Volvo was under Ford Motor Company ownership, as part of its now defunct Premier Automotive Group, which also included Jaguar, Aston Martin and Land Rover. “When Ford took over they brought in a lot of Ford managers to align Volvo with Ford systems, procedures and processes,” said Engelen “Since the 2010 takeover, Geely has not appointed even one manager to Volvo Cars (outside of China, where it operates two Volvo production facilities). Geely has invested heavily in Volvo Cars and as long as the company continues to deliver on its long-range strategy plan, it does not plan to interfere with current operations. The big items on the Volvo restructuring shopping list were to have its own platforms, its own engines and its own electrical architecture.Redesigned and new editions of the S60 and the V60 have been added for 2015, in addition to XC90.

Don’t drive your truck in a watery graveSpring-like weather means the back woods trails are already beckoning us out here in the west.While my Driveway colleagues seem to have spent the last month plowing through snow and ice back east, I’m raring to get out there in our beautiful back yard.However, there are a few things to think about before you head out into the back roads of British Columbia this spring, to find yourself driving through those swollen creeks and rivers. Think about that water entering areas of your truck, believe me, you would prefer it did not do so! – Your truck’s transmission, transfer case, and front and rear differentials must be vented to compen-sate for changes in air pressure as temperatures go up and down when you drive, but when you are driving off road in wet conditions the most likely

place for water to enter is through those vents. Water that gets in contaminates the lubricants that protect parts, and that can lead to bearing and gear damage. To keep water from getting into areas where it should not be is fairly easy. Attach a rubber hose, or vacuum hose to each vent, and then extend it to a high location on the truck. The length of tubing required will depend on your vehicle, but 30 – 35 centimetres should be enough.Before you begin, locate the vent on each compo-nent. Determine if each vent is a tube or a cap style. If it is a tube style make sure that the hose fits tight and secure it with a small hose clamp, leaving ex-cess hose length to route upwards. Cap type vents are usually screwed in mushroom shaped. Remove the cap from each one by unscrewing it. Use this for a sample and buy a nipple vent with the same

thread size and replace the cap with the nipple.The new vacuum hose for the transmission and transfer case vents can be secured along the frame or body to the firewall with plastic tie straps (do not over tighten and pinch the hose) and from there up into the engine compartment. Make sure to secure the end. Leave about 8 centimetres and bend it downward. The front differential hose is to be routed in a similar fashion but allow enough slack for axle movement. The same goes for the rear differential but instead of running it to the front, direct it up between the bed and the cab of the truck. When you have finished, check the tubing to make sure it is free of kinks and positioned away from hot exhaust or engine parts.Now you are ready to go through creeks and mud

holes with very little chance of water to enter the vents. Water can still enter components through other routes, so be sure to check the color of your differential and transmission fluid after each trip. Axle grease turns a light brown color when mixed with water. Automatic transmission fluid turns pink when mixed with water.

For most of her life, sports was a sanctuary for Patti Dawn Swansson, a place where she could be among friends.

Often picked on by bullies because of her petite size, Swansson turned to sports as a refuge.

Those who bullied her soon found she was a talented athlete in both hockey and baseball, and left her alone.

Her sports prowess took her into the newspaper business, where she wrote sports, and eventually became a sports editor and columnist for the Winnipeg Sun.

But for more than 50 years, she was living a tortured existence as a woman trapped inside a man’s body.

“I knew from the time I was eight years old I was different,”

says Swansson, 64 and a Victoria resident.

Swansson, though, lived life back then as Pat Doyle, a rough and tumble sports editor, working in the world of macho professionals.

“It was tough going into team dressing rooms to hear the language,” she recalls. “The contempt [athletes] held for gay people and for women. The misogyny was terrible.”

After several years, Swansson refused to go to dressing room interviews and found her sources elsewhere.

Seven years ago, she became true to herself, beginning the process of gender reassignment. It started with

hormone therapy and ended with surgery in 2009.

Swansson’s long struggle has a triumphal ending of sorts, at least in the newspaper world.

Last month, she returned to Winnipeg as one of the inductees to the Manitoba Sports Writers Hall of Fame.

“The phone call came out of the blue,” she says. “I started to laugh because

I’ve been out of the business so long.”

Swansson moved to Victoria in 1999 and toiled at a variety of jobs.

There were cleaning jobs, work in an antique store and even a brief stint as sports editor of the Victoria News.

The induction in the hall of fame is something special.

“I just did my job, so to be recognized, it was lovely,” she says.

But to those who know her, Swansson did more than just come into work every day and do her job.

Swansson is one of the finest journalists longtime friend and former co-worker Dave Komosky ever came across.

“Patti is very serious about the newspaper business. She has a really nice touch with words and humour,” he says.

Komosky first

worked with Swansson in 1972 and was a coworker at both the Winnipeg Sun and the now-defunct Winnipeg Tribune.

Along the way, Swansson has had a huge influence on many people’s careers, in media circles from Toronto to Winnipeg, adds Komosky.

To Swansson, though, she hopes the biggest influence she might have is on a gay youth who has aspirations of becoming a sports writer.

“I don’t know a gay sports writer in Canada, male or female,” she says.

“For me to get this award is what it represents. I hope a gay youth reads about it, hears about it and can understand that if I can do it, then they can do it. They won’t have to hide in the closet any longer.”

While the Mt. Douglas Rams may be most well-known for their provincial No. 1 football team, this weekend the Rams AAAA senior boys basketball team will host the Island championship in hopes of matching their football team as a provincial competi-tor.

Featuring seven of the best high school basketball teams from the Island, the 65th Annual AAAA Island Championships opened Thursday (Feb. 26) and con-tinues through Feb. 28 at the Gordon Head school.

While as a young team, Mount Douglas enters the tournament as underdogs, they’re quick, and with skilled players like Gavin Cobb and Clayton Archibald, they’re aiming for top spot, said coach Chris Ball.

With Oak Bay ranked in the top five in British Columbia, they should be the favourite to win the Islands, while Cowichan, Dover Bay, and Mount Douglas will battle for the second berth to provin-cials.

The Camosun Chargers wom-en’s and men’s volleyball teams enjoy two distinct advantages heading into this weekend’s Pac-West provincial championships.

Not only did both teams fin-ish in the top two in league play, earning a bye into today’s semi-finals (Feb. 27), their players get to sleep in their own beds, as Camosun is hosting the event at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence (PISE) in Saanich.

And the way his team dominated possible semifinal opponent Van-couver Island Univer-sity Mariners in the final week of regular season play – winning 3-0 last Saturday at home and 3-0 in Nanaimo Feb. 21 – shows the Chargers are hitting their peak at the right time, he says.

“I think it definitely gives us a mental edge, we knew we beat them and we weren’t doing anything special; we were just doing what we normally do,” Sadowski says of the VIU match. “It was nice to kind of send a physical and psychological message to them …”

The Chargers – whose Greater Victoria-trained players also include middle Douglas Water-man and leftsides Mark Severinsen and Taran Silas of Belmont, leftside Cameron Fennema of Pacific Christian, libero Elion Wong of Oak Bay and setter Gabriel Duval of Reynolds – have won matches against every team in the PacWest this season.

That includes the nationally No. 1-ranked Douglas College Royals, who are a near shoo-in to be playing in Satur-day night’s B.C. final at PISE.

Keeping such a fact in mind will give the Char-gers confidence as they battle to secure B.C.’s

lone nationals berth, Sadowski says.

“We know we’ve beaten them in the past in league games, so it all comes down to who plays that little bit better,” he says. “Vol-leyball’s definitely one of those sports where anything can happen and any team can beat another on a given day.”

Chargers men’s coach Charles Parkinson said the results against VIU give a good indication of how far they’ve come as a team this season, and a validation of all the training they’ve done to get here.

Camosun finished the season with an 18-6 match record, 60-27 if you’re counting indi-vidual sets won/lost. They come into the pro-vincials ranked No. 8 in Canada, an odd situ-ation considering the Columbia Bible College Bearcats, who finished fourth in the PacWest, moved up to No. 4 in this week’s Canadian College Athletic Asso-ciation ratings.

The stellar regular season sees the Char-gers ranked No. 2 in Canada behind only

Led by Courtenay native Hilary Graham, who tops the team in various attack catego-ries including kills (2.79 per game), aces (0.57) and total offence (3.50 points per game), the Chargers have a bal-anced attack and killer defence.

Not only did both teams fin-ish in the top two in league play, earning a bye into today’s semi-finals (Feb. 27), their players get to sleep in their own beds, as Camosun is hosting the event at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence (PISE) in Saanich.

Real estate prices in lower Van-couver Island are some of the high-est in Canada, hence, the abundance of houses with a “mortgage helper,” or what is officially called ‘additional accommodation’ in the MLS.

Here are three things buyers should know before and during the process of purchasing a home with a suite.

Firstly, what are your lender’s requirements? Does the suite need to be tenanted with a minimum amount of rental income or can the suite be vacant? How much of the rental income will be used to qual-ify? Some lenders use 100 per cent while others accept much less.

Also, does the suite have to be legal or is ‘illegal’ acceptable? Does a basement area that just needs a kitchen to make it a suite, qualify?

Knowing such details is critically important, as is illustrated in a sale I was involved in a few years ago.

I had a property listed with an empty, full-height basement. It was a perfect candidate for the creation of a suite. Several times I asked the agent representing the buyers whether they were financially quali-fied to purchase the property. The agent insisted they were and on that basis the offer was accepted.

However, it was discovered that, although it was within their price range, neither the buyers nor their agent had made themselves aware that their lender required the home to have an existing suite. It was a waste of time and disappointing for everyone involved.

Secondly, the Residential Tenancy Act has very specific rules regard-ing the sale of a home where ten-ants occupy a suite. Buyers may not legally ask for vacant possession of a suite simply because they want to put their own choice of tenant in the suite. Buyers may only request a seller to end a tenancy agreement under the same circumstances that a landlord can do so.

The most common reasons are: a) if you want to use the entire home for yourselves or if you are pre-

pared to leave the suite vacant for 6 months, b) if you intend to rent it to a member of your immediate family, meaning parents or children, or c) if you plan to do major renovations.

Painting and other minor things don’t count. You are required to pro-duce permits to prove your renova-tions are major.

Thirdly, if none of the three sce-narios above are applicable, then you must accept that the tenants come with the property. If this is the case, they are either an asset or a liability and need to be investigated, just as you would other components of the property.

In the conditions of a purchase agreement, you should require a

copy of the rental agreement as well as an opportunity to interview the tenants before removing your con-ditions.

For instance, if you are allergic to cigarette smoke or cats and the ten-ant smokes and /or has a cat, both of which may be allowed under the existing rental agreement, you may not wish to proceed.

Otherwise, be prepared to go to arbitration to receive permission to give your tenant notice to vacate. There is no guarantee you’ll win, because you knew or should have known the situation before you pur-chased the property.

Another scenario is if the rent is significantly below market. If the

tenants remain, it will take years to raise it to market standards, because the annual rate of rental increase allowed by the Residential Tenancy Act is quite minimal.

Suites are a great financial boost in purchasing a home and provid-ing cash-flow on a monthly basis, but there is more to being a land-lord than collecting rent cheques.
