Case Study | SAAoneSize: 1000 employees Location: The Netherlands Industry: Construction

Large civil engineering jobs usually involve a range of firms. The Schiphol, Amsterdam, and Almere highway project, called SAAone, is a case in point. There are four main partners, but others are brought onboard from time to time.

Sharing knowledge and plans is vital for smooth progress. So if each partner firm used only its own systems, making headway can be difficult. SAAone sought an innovative way of creating its own IT shared service center.

“ FlexPod is a real game changer. It’s fast-delivering, highly secure, and very user friendly.”

John Kools, Program Manager, SAAone

Four firms are working on SAAone, a major Dutch road-building project. They can’t afford to work in siloes. A Cisco® private cloud means each firm can securely access the same data.

In just 11 weeks, Cisco FlexPod gave SAAone exactly what it needed

Secure access for all accredited partiesA private cloud based on FlexPod, which combines Cisco servers and switches with NetApp storage, gave SAAone a single data center that each party can access securely. Because it comes as a single per-integrated system, SAAone was able to get it up and running in just 11 weeks. New users are granted access as and when they need it. Plus FlexPod gives SAAone the reports it needs to show its public sector client that work is on track.

Self-service and almost self-supportingIncluding many self-service and automation functions, the private cloud means users can do most IT tasks themselves. It’s also very stable. SAAone has had no downtime in the two years since it went live. This means it doesn’t have to spend much on looking after the system. “Before we would’ve needed one IT person per 100 users,” says John Kools, program manager. “Now we have just two technicians for over a thousand customers.”

More economic user optionsAt the same time, SAAone saves money on license fees because it only pays for users who are on the system at any given time. That’s a small fraction of the total number of workers. And it’s cheaper than paying per endpoint, because each user may have more than one. Plus, it means SAAone can adopt a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) program without added costs.

Breaking new collaborative groundSAAone is proud of the way it’s solved the data center challenge. Not only is the private cloud great for the project, but it’s also a new way of doing things in the sector. The project partners are able to work collaboratively with each other, getting the job done more quickly.

Another benefit is the entire FlexPod system comes from a single vendor, so SAAone has to make only one call if things go wrong. “FlexPod is a real game changer,” says Kools. “It’s fast-delivering, highly secure, and very user friendly.”

Help available right down the roadFor now the main aim of SAAone is to finish the project on time and on budget. But the consortium also won the contract to support the road for 30 years. “The private cloud provides plenty of room for the data and system needs that could arise over time,” says Adelbert de Vreese, project director for SAAone.
