24-25 AUGUST 2019SA’S LARGEST REGIONAL SHOW
BRINGING COMMUNITIES TOGETHER
President’s Message Welcome to the 163rd Gawler Show season.
The Year of Indigenous Language, an opportunity to involve our Indigenous Community, moving forward sharing their communities.
We had a Record Show Attendance last year and thank all our Sponsors and Patrons for making this possible.
Each year I say a big Thank You to our Staff for their hard work, it is becoming so much harder; putting on a massive Show like Gawler involves many hours, continuing from one show to the next, improving where we can. I really appreciate your commitment
and truly thank you from the committee and myself.
I would like to thank Leonie Rex for her volunteering and her role of Entries Administrator. The AGM in November Raff Piccolo stepped down from the Committee; Claire Forgie, Janet Done and Rebecca Bolton, were welcomed to the Management Committee.
We have been working with Town of Gawler on a Strategic Plan, and maintenance program, looking at ways to utilise our property. The committee continues to explore new ideas and experiences to all who attend.
This year we will be having a Friday night Event “Secret Show Business” making the most of our Show.
It has been a big year with some very needed upgrades to the office and meeting room. Thank you to staff and Families for making this happen.
In January we welcomed our newest staff member Donna Noble who is the new Entries Administrator.
Work has now commenced on the Gawler Show Archiving Project supported by a Town of Gawler Community Grant. Gawler A.H. & F. Society member and former Committee person, Helen Hennessy has begun the exciting task of sorting through several lifetimes of records.
We congratulate, our Young Rural Ambassador Sasha Selleck and Rural Ambassador Jade Smith on both being Runners Up at the NASA Dinner in March.
This year we are pleased to announce our new Fireworks Sponsor Taylor and Forgie and welcome their increased support.
We look forward to our 2019 Show.

Family of Volunteers
Isaiah Tesselaar Isaiah Tesselaar holds many roles within the Gawler Show, he is the current Young Rural Ambassador Runner-Up, a Photography Judge and is also on the Gawler Show Youth Team Committee.
It seems volunteering at the Gawler Show is a bit of a Tesselaar family tradition, having three generations of their family volunteering at the Show.
It all started with Nic & Marcene, his grandparents, who have been volunteering for 38 years now. It was Mary Cockshell (Life Member) that first got them involved, back when they owned a chicken farm at Kalbeeba and Mary asked them to judge eggs.
From there Nic & Marcene’s son Peter (Isaiah’s dad) became involved as a steward and then judge and has been judging for approx. 29 years, Peter continues judging for the Produce Section today.
It doesn’t end there, Peter’s wife Chantelle (Isaiah’s mum) was the Show Secretary for 4 years.
This is where their son Isaiah became involved helping with the grounds team setting up the Show from a ripe old age of 8 years old.
Isaiah was one of the founding members of the Youth Team that was formed 7 years ago, and at the time was filled with the children of volunteers. Isaiah’s sister Kialani
also joined him on the Youth Team for several years. As a youngster Isaiah would enter his work into the Junior Handicrafts and Photography sections.
Nic & Marcene continue with their involvement today as the Conveners of the Produce Section and now have 2 other grandchildren Bailey & Felix assisting as Stewards.
It is volunteers like the Tesselaar Family that have been involved generation after generation that keep the Show going. Without their hard work and dedication, the Show would not go on. We thank them and all our volunteers for all their wonderful assistance.
Isaiah was one of the founding members of the Youth Team that was formed 7 years ago.

Gawler Tractor & Engine Club Display
Some people walk, some ride bikes or horses but we like to play with old tractors, engines and machinery.
Since 1985/86 a handful of members have been displaying their old machinery as a feature of the Gawler Show and formed the Association in 2002. Since then the Association has progressively grown and continues to expand as the interest in old machinery grows.
Some members like to restore their machinery back to as near as possible to the original and others just like to keep them in their “working clothes.”
The Gawler Tractor & Engine Association ‘Where Yesterday meets Today’.
Take some time out from the hustle and bustle of the Gawler Show and head over to the Rec Centre for free ‘learn to play’ games presented by Table Top Warfare. This is a fun, relaxed, family friendly way to learn Pokémon & Magic; The Gathering card games as well as a wide variety of boardgames.

“Community really is in our DNA at Beyond Bank.” said John Morrison, Beyond Bank Community Development Manager.

“As a customer-owned bank our aim is to build a stronger and more prosperous community for our customers. Our reward program offers like-minded community groups, clubs and causes, who partner with us benefits that support their community.”

Getting to the show
Off the Couch with Ethan is the brain child of Year 11
Gawler student, Ethan White. Launched in 2018, when
Ethan was only 15, it is a travel show aimed to inspire
young people and their families to get off the couch
and into the great outdoors, to visit the stunning
places Australia has to offer. Ethan started to mix his
two passions of travelling and filmmaking together,
forming travel-type videos of his family adventures.
“Video production is such a great way to get your
message across to a wider audience” he said. “As I moved into high school, I realised that
a lot of young people my age did not get the opportunities to go travelling and camping
with their families.” Through hard work and determination Ethan’s show is now aired on
Adelaide’s community TV station, Channel 44, and later Melbourne’s Channel 31.
Ethan is also Gawler’s joint Young Citizen of the Year for 2019, awarded for his large
contribution to the local community. “This is something I am extremely passionate about,”
he said, “but to be recognised for your efforts
by the local community is an absolute honour.”
The Society worked closely with Ethan in 2018
to showcase the Gawler Show over several
episodes. This year, we are lucky enough to
have Ethan back as our roving reporter. “I am
so excited to compere this year’s Gawler Show.
The Show is such an awesome community event
and it will be my pleasure to host it across the
weekend.”
If you would like to view Ethan’s episodes, check
out his website: offthecouchwithethan.com.au. Also, be sure to like him on Facebook and
follow him on Instagram, to stay up to date with his travels!

Year of Indigenous LanguageThe United Nations General Assembly has declared 2019 the International Year of Indigenous Languages (IY2019) to raise awareness of the crucial role languages play in people’s daily lives.
In Australia, of the estimated original 250
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages,
only around 120 are still spoken. Of these
approximately 90 per cent are endangered.
IY2019 is an opportunity to continue raising
awareness and taking further actions to improve
preservation and promotion of Australia’s
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages.
With this in mind, and to help celebrate the
International Year of Indigenous Languages,
the Gawler Show would like to introduce a
Literacy section to our list of competitions in
2020.
If literature is something you are interested in, we are looking for a passionate leader to Convene the section. For more information contact Donna Noble, Entries Administrator on 8523 1477.
While you are at the Show why not visit one of the many indigenous attractions we have on offer.

History Matters
Medals, posters, trophies, ribbons, certificates, show books, minutes and correspondence are all vital parts of any organisations history. Thanks to the Gawler Show Archiving Project the process of sorting through several lifetimes of records has begun. With support from the Town Of Gawler Community Grant this project is being led by Helen Hennessy and will build on the work already undertaken by Mary Peacock (nee Cockshell). “Outside of the region’s Birth, Death, Marriage and Cemetery Records this might be the most comprehensive list of the people who lived, worked or did business in Gawler over the past 165 years”, said Helen.
Throughout the years there has been a keen emphasis on promoting the skills and commitment of local producers. There has always been a focus on including children and celebrating the contributions of both men and women. Without these records who would remember that our fireworks display began as early as 1883! Interestingly, wine making has a very long and proud history at the Gawler Show thanks, in part, to the German settlers at Buchsfelde.
There will be a chance to see some of the Show’s history at this year’s Show so come along and check it out. You won’t be disappointed!
If you wish to donate items from the Gawler Show’s history. Please contact Kate Cowell on 8523 1477. Your contributions will be gratefully accepted.
For more information on the Gawler Show Archiving Project, including how other Community Groups can go about such a project please contact Helen Hennessy on 0413 331 004 or [email protected]
