Sabbath Renewal
Another reason why the Sabbath day was blessed is that He who formed this world in six days foresaw that man would turn towards evil and would, as a result, go back to the ground, descend to Hades, and be imprisoned there; and this whole world would grow old and useless because of man, but would be renewed by God becoming man. This renewal was effected when God incarnate descended into Hades through death and declared there on the Sabbath the recall of souls. It was because He foresaw that this would happen on the Sabbath that He rightly deemed it the only day worthy to be blessed. However, although this work was secretly made ready on the seventh day, the Sabbath, everything was clearly brought to light and accomplished when the body too had been
summoned to immortality through the Lord’s Resurrection on the eighth day. This is why we call it the Lord’s Day. As Friday, the day of preparation, stands in relation to the Sabbath, so is the Sabbath in comparison with Sunday, which is obviously superior to it. As perfection and reality surpass beginning, pattern, and shadow, so is Sunday more excellent and honorable, because on it the exceedingly blessed work was finished, and on it we await the General Resurrection of all, the perfect entry of the saints into the divine rest and dissolution of the world into its elements.

When Jesus returned to Capernaum, it was reported that He was at home. And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room for them, not even about the door; and He was preaching the word to them. And they came, bringing to Him a paralytic carried by four men. And when they could not get near Him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above Him; and when they had made an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic lay. And when Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, "My son, your sins are forgiven." Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, "Why does this man speak thus? lt is blasphemy! Who can’t forgive sins but God alone?" And immediately Jesus, perceiving in His spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, "Why do you question thus in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Rise, take up your pallet and walk'? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins" - He said to the paralytic, "l say to you, rise, take up your pallet and go home." And he rose, and immediately took up the pallet and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, "We never saw anything like this!"
~Mark 2: 1-12
An Examination of Conscience for Lent
St. Augustine (who lived in the 4th century) said that the three
Lenten practices of fasting, prayer and almsgiving work to-
gether to turn us away from self-centeredness and help equip
us to love God and our neighbour more deeply. By opening
us to His love and mercy, they help empower us to become
His ambassadors in the world.
This Lent, as you prepare for the Sacrament of Recon-
ciliation, ask yourself how your life can better reflect and
become more like Jesus – who live completely for God and
other people, and not for Himself?
1. Jesus ‘went off to the mountain to pray.” (Mark 6:46)
- Are there subtle, or not so subtle ways that I have ignored
my relationship with God?
- Have I made time everyday to meet God in prayer? Do I
read, reflect and act on His Word to me in the Scriptures?
- Have I given priority to God on Sundays and holy days by
attending the Divine Liturgy and making a special effort to seek Him?
2. “Return to me with your whole heart, with fasting, and weeping and mourning.” (Joel
2:12)
- Are there areas of myself that I am holding back from God – secret parts that I don’t want to
expose to His light and His love?
- How much do I rely on the Lord for fulfillment, compared with the security I seek from money,
possessions, or other relationships?
3. “This ... is the fasting that I wish: releasing those bound unjustly ... sharing your bread
with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless; clothing the naked.” (Isaiah 58:6-
7)
- Am I doing what I can to stand up against injustice and to protect the unborn, the poor, and the
defenceless? Are there recent situations where I failed to follow the Holy Spirit’s lead in this?
- Are there situations in which I neglected to care for the people God has put in my life? Have I
resisted putting their needs before my own?
- Is there anyone I have failed to treat according to the respect and dignity he or she deserves as a
Child of God?
4. “Give alms from your possessions.” (Tobit 4:7)
- Have I been a good steward of the gifts God has given me? Do I use them for His glory?
- Am I an active supporter and contributor to the work of the Church and of the organizations that
serve the needy? Or have I been stingy with my time and talents?
- Are there situations in which I resist giving ‘alms’ of forgiveness to someone who has hurt me?
Is there anyone I need to forgive? Anyone whose forgiveness I need to ask?
“If you want your prayers to fly to God, equip them with the two wings of fasting and almsgiv-
ing.” – St. Augustine
Please keep in your prayers members of our parish, our family and friends who are
ailing, are in hospitals, nursing homes and those who are not able to join actively
in their community. If you or a family member is admitted to hospital and you
wish to have a priest visit, please be sure to have someone call the Parish Office to
make this request. Your pastor may have no other way of knowing that you are in
hospital.

Sign of the Cross
We often make the sign of the cross as we begin and end our prayers, when we celebrate the Divine Liturgy, for others when they leave their homes or before driving their cars, or even when passing by a church. Actually, the sign of the cross is in itself a very short prayer. With it, we appeal to God to make our prayers worthwhile and, at the same time, we profess two truths: the first is the deepest mysteries of the Christian faith which is the Holy Trinity - the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. When we say “In the name of,” we profess that we believe that there is one God. We don’t say “In the names of” starting it in singular and not plural. When we say, “the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,” we state that we believe that in one God there are three Divine Persons. The second truth that we profess is the saving work of Christ on the cross. This is shown as we trace the cross from our forehead to our breast and from our should to shoulder. This short prayer of words and action is not just a statement of our belief, but it is a vow to defend that belief, even if it means taking our own cross to follow Jesus, our Lord and Saviour.
