Aurora Public Schools Introduces SchoolMessengerAurora Public Schools is now using SchoolMessenger as the automated messaging system to communicate with parents and staff. This is the messaging system that APS and your school will use to contact you about emergen-cies, student attendance and other important information.

Keeping Students SafeStudents learn best when they feel safe. To actively maintain the safest schools possible, APS has formed part-nerships with law enforcement, fire and rescue agencies, as well as mental health, crisis, and social service organizations.
In the event of an emergency, APS has the following plans in place:• Allschoolshavelockdownandevacuationplansthatarepracticedregularly.• Allschoolshavestrongvisitormanagementpolicies.• Allschoolshavesecuritycamerasinstrategicplaces.• APShasahighlytrainedIncidentResponseTeamthatproactivelysimulatescrisisscenariostoensurestu-
dent and staff safety in emergencies.• MembersoftheIncidentResponseTeammeetwithschoolstaffannuallytoevaluateemergencyresponse
preparation.
Ensuring student and staff safety is a top priority for APS. If your child has a safety concern, please report it im-mediately to school staff or use one of the APS safety reporting tools at aurorak12.org/safety.
Ensuring Student Safety in a CrisisIn a school or neighborhood crisis, the Aurora Police De-partment or school administrators may place a school in lockdown to ensure the safety of our staff and students. Below are brief descriptions of lockdown levels.

Anytime an APS site is in lockdown, no one – not even par-ents – will be allowed into the building, nor will any stu-dents be released. Please know that this is done to ensure student safety.
Kinder NewsHello Kindergarten Families! Please continue to have your kindergartener practice tying their shoes and zipping their coats. Remind them to blow their nose with a Kleenex and cover their mouth when they cough. Also remind them to keep things (fingers, pencils, books, shoe strings, etc.) out of their mouths to prevent the spreading of germs.
Please keep practicing letters and letter sounds at home. There are many activities you and your child can do together to increase letter recognition and letter sound knowledge. We have sent home the sound card along with a list of the activities to practice with every student. If you need another copy, please let your stu-dent’s teacher know. If you received a list of Kindergarten High Fre-quency Words from your student’s teacher, please practice 3 or 4 words at a time until your child can read and write them from memory; then you can take on 3 or 4 new words from the list and continue until the whole list has been memorized. The list of words to learn is long, soitisimportanttohaveyourchildchoosejust3 or 4 to focus on at a time. Here are some dif-ferent ways to practice these words at home:1. Have your child write spelling words:
• Onpaperwithpencils,pen,markersorpaint
• Withchalkonasidewalkorpatio• Withdryerasemarkersonamirror• Typeonthecomputer• Withhis/herfingers inaplateofpud-
ding• With fingers in shaving cream on a
counter• Withfingerinsand• Withfingeroncarpetoranothertextured
surface (like the bottom of a shoe)2. Have your child spell the words out loud
while you are in the car or in line at a store3. Spell words using blocks, scrabble tiles, or
flash cards4. Combine spelling with physical activity:
have your child do jumping jacks, sayingone letter per jump, or while walking upand down stairs, saying one letter per step
5. Encourage your child to read! Good read-ers are good spellers.

Remember, homework is sent home in the Thursday folder. Encourage your child to do one or two pages each night and then bring it back to school eight days later on Friday of the next week. Thanks for your help and supportathome!Pleasedonothesitatetocontactuswithquestions.
4th Grade NewsIfyour4thGradechildisstatingtheiropinionsabitmorenowthanbefore,theyarejustdoingtheirhomework!ThisquarterinWritingwearelearninghowtowriteOpinionandArgumentEssays.Whenmakinganargument,students are asked to think of a thesis or statement of believe. Then they need to defend that thesis with rea-sons,facts,details,andexamples.Supportyourchildinthesenewskillsbyposingaquestion.Allowthemtoformanopinionandgiveatleastthreedifferentreasonsthatsupporttheirpoint.Anexample,“Shouldchildrenberequiredtodochoreseveryday?”Askyourchildwhattheythinkandlistentotheirwonderfulopinions. In Science, we are continuing to study the phases of the moon and making observations about what we see. Dur-ing math students are practicing their multiplication facts. Ask your student what number they are working on and practice giving them multiplication problems. For example, if your student says they are working on 6 then they are learning 6x1, 6x2, 6x3, 6x3, 6x4, 6x5, 6x6, 6x7, 6x8, and 6x9. Knowing these basic multiplication facts will help your child understand the larger number relationships.
5th Grade NewsIt was great to see so many of your families at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science on November 9. We will get free membership information to you soon. We are looking forward to our field trip there on December 13. We will be contacting you if you volunteered to help.
WehopeyouenjoyedyourThanksgivingbreak,andarelookingforwardtoWinterBreakaswell.
Although reading homework is optional and rewarded by us, we do hope your child is reading daily at home. We’ve been sending home chapter books this year with the expectation that kids trade them with us when they are done.
Thanks for your support.
