Sable Flower! The Sable Flower is a hexagonal crochet “block” made in the round with 4 colors. Ideal for scrap afghan projects. !!Materials!Yarn: The blocks pictured were made using “scrap” DK weight and some worsted-weight yarns. Center flowers included “leftovers” of Rowan CashSoft and Lopi Light. Background yarn for blocks was Cascade220 Heathers in Chocolate Brown and (discontinued) Jaeger tweed aran. Overall border for completed afghan used remaining brown Jaeger and Cascade. !Crochet Hooks: For your own blocks, use crochet hook appropriate for yarn. (Examples in photos made using a F5/3.75mm and a G6/4.25mm hooks on DK and worsted weight yarn. !!Skill Level!!!Pattern!Yarn A = center color, Yarn B = 2nd color in the center, Yarn C = flower petals, Yarn D = background color !FOUNDATION RING: Using Yarn A, ch4 and join with ss to form a ring. !ROUND 1: With same Yarn A, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), then *[1 dc into ring] 11 times, join with ss in to 3rd of ch3. (12 dc). Break off yarn A. !ROUND 2: Join Yarn B, ch3, then dc into the same space, ch1. Then *[dc x2 into the next space in between the Yarn A dc below, ch 1], rep from * 11 times, and join with ss in 3rd of ch3. (24 dc, 12 chain spaces). Break off Yarn B. !

ROUND 3: Join Yarn C (the color of the petals) and ch3. Skip the 2 dcs below and then *[1sc into next space between dc (the chain loop), ch 3], repeat *11 times, You should now have 12 chain loops, which you’ll use to make the 12 flower petals. !ROUND 4: Start this round in your first ch3 loop. Work *[1sc, ch2, 3dc, ch2, 1sc] into first loop. Then repeat * 11 times into the remaining loops to make your front flower petals. !ROUND 5: This round involves working behind the petals you just made in Round 4. Work ch5, then *[1sc into the back of the first petal edge, ch5]. Repeat *11 times, 1 sc into back of first petal to complete the final loop. These loops prepare your ring with loops for 12 more flower petals, but these will be bigger and tucked behind the first set. !ROUND 6: Start this round in your first 5 chain loop. Work *[1sc, 2ch, 5dc, 2ch, 1sc] into first loop. Then repeat *11 times into the remaining loops to make the 12 back petals. Break off Yarn C. 11 times, 1 sc into back of first petal to complete the final loop.

ROUND 7: This round involves working behind both sets of petals in order to start the background. Join Yarn D (the background color) and ch3, then *[1sc into the back of the petal edge yet again, ch 3]. Repeat * !ROUND 8: Start this round in your first ch 3 loop. Work 1sc, ch3, 1dc, ch2, 2dc, ch1, then *[move on to the next set of loops and 3dc, ch1, move on to the next loop, 2dc, ch2, 2dc, ch1]. Repeat *5 times, then (in last loop) 3dc, ch1, join with a ss into first chain. !ROUND 9: Work ch3, 3dc, ch2, 2dc, ch1, then *[move on to the next loop and 3dc, ch1, move on to the next loop and 3dc, ch1, move on to the next loop, 2dc, ch2, 2dc, ch1]. Repeat *5 times, then in last loop) 3dc, ch1, join with a ss into first chain. !ROUND 10: Work ch3, then work 1dc into every dc and chain space of previous round EXCEPT for “corners,” into which you work 1dc, ch1, 1dc. Break off Yarn D. !!!

! !!Finishing Notes

Afghan pictured in photos has 72 finished blocks, which were all seamed

together using single crochet. Then, to create a final border, three rows of double crochet were

added around the entire circumference. Final dimensions = 48” x 67” !

Knitter’s Dictionary What is “SABLE”? In knitting lingo, SABLE is a Stash Acquisition Beyond Life Expectancy. In other words, so much yarn stored in bins, in a

closet or in a barn that it would be impossible for the crafter to actually USE all of the yarn in his or

her lifetime.
