I lived in the mountains.

The mountains were safe.

But there was not enough food there.

My name is Sacagawea.

I am a Shoshoni Indian.

Chapter 1: How My Mother Died 5

The Minnetaree Indians lived on the plains.

The Minnetaree Indians did not like us.

We could eat buffalo.

But it wasn’t safe on the plains.

There was food on the grassy plains.

Thousands of buffalo lived on the plains.

6

The Minnetaree Indians killed my mother.

The Minnetaree Indians made me their prisoner.

7

The Minnetaree Indians made me their prisoner.

The Minnetaree chief made me his slave.

I had to live in the chief’s house.

Chapter 2: Prisoner8

Otter Woman was also a slave.

Otter Woman was also a Shoshoni girl.

9

She taught us how to make boats.

The chief’s wife was good to us.

She taught us how to grow corn.

The Minnetarees had warm houses.

But I did not like the Minnetarees.

The Minnetarees were lucky!

The Minnetarees had food.11

One day a white man came.

He looked like a bear!

Otter Woman and I called him “Old Bear.”

We did not like Old Bear.

Old Bear won Otter Woman in a bet!

Old Bear won me in a bet!

We had to marry Old Bear!

The chief liked Old Bear.

The chief and Old Bear played games.

The chief and Old Bear made bets.

13

Where were the white men going?

Old Bear said that they were going west.

They were going west to the sea.

Soon more white men came.

These men came in boats.

14

Old Bear wanted to help them.

He wanted to show them the Shoshoni village.

15

The Shoshoni had horses.

The white men needed horses.

The white men had guns.

The Shoshoni needed guns.
