June 10, 2018 Tenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

A Message from the Pastor

Dear parishioners, This weekend at our 11:30 a.m. Mass we will offer a

special blessing to our graduating high school seniors. This is always a special moment – they have grown in age, faith and wisdom among us, and now we send them out with a special blessing. This month we also bid farewell to our parish Coordi-nator of Youth Ministry, Katie Cavazzini. For the past two years, Katie has brought her deep faith and love for Christ and the Church to our parish and its youth. We wish her God’s blessings as she leaves and know that God will continue to bless her and do amazing things through her witness!

This also means that we are now seeking a part-time Coordinator of Youth Ministry (CYM) to start on or about July 1. Primary areas of responsibility are Confirmation catechesis and programs, teen youth ministry and peer ministry develop-ment. The new CYM will join our ministry staff and collaborate with us on many aspects of parish life. The candidate must be a practicing Catholic with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. Hours will include evenings/weekends. The salary is based on experience and education. By June 15, the candidate should send resume, cover letter and two references to: [email protected].

* Last Sunday the Church celebrated the Corpus Christi

(the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ). Pope Francis gave a very inspiring homily on the occasion, excerpts of which I’d like to share with you:

The Gospel we just heard speaks of the Last Supper, but surprisingly, pays more attention to the preparations than to the dinner itself. We keep hearing the word “prepare”. For ex-ample, the disciples ask: “Where do you want us to go and pre-pare for you to eat the Passover?” (Mk 14:12). Jesus sends them off with clear instructions to make the necessary preparations and they find “a large room… furnished and ready” (v. 15). The disciples went off to prepare, but the Lord had already made his own preparations ….

Jesus, then, prepares for us and asks us to be prepared. What does he prepare for us? A place and a meal. A place much more worthy than the “large furnished room” of the Gospel. It is our spacious and vast home here below, the Church, where there is, and must be, room for everyone. But he has also reserved a place for us on high, in heaven, so that we can be with him and with one another forever. In addition to a place, he prepares a meal, the Bread in which he gives himself: “Take; this is my body” (Mk 14:22). These two gifts, a place, and a meal are what we need to live. They are our ultimate “room and board”. Both are bestowed upon us in the Eucharist … In the consecrated host, together with a place, Jesus prepares for us a meal, food for our nourishment. In life, we constantly need to be fed: nourished not only with food but also with plans and affection, hopes and desires. We hunger to be loved. But the most pleasing compliments, the finest gifts, and the most advanced technologies are not enough; they never completely satisfy us. The Eucharist is simple food, like bread, yet it is the only food that satisfies, for there is no greater love. There we encounter Jesus really; we share his life and we feel his love. There you can realize that his death and resurrection are for you. And when you worship Jesus in the Eucharist, you receive from him the Holy Spirit and you find peace and joy. Dear brothers and sisters, let us choose this food of life! Let us make Mass our priority! Let us rediscover Eucharistic adoration

in our communities! Let us implore the grace to hunger for God, with an insatiable desire to receive what he has prepared for us.

As he did with his disciples, so too today Jesus asks us, today, to prepare. Like the disciples, let us ask him: “Lord, where do you want us to go to prepare?” Where: Jesus does not prefer exclusive, selective places. He looks for places un-touched by love, untouched by hope. Those uncomfortable places are where he wants to go and he asks us to prepare his way. How many persons lack dignified housing or food to eat! All of us know people who are lonely, troubled and in need: they are abandoned tabernacles. We, who receive from Jesus our own room and board, are here to prepare a place and a meal for these, our brothers and sisters in need. Jesus became bread broken for our sake; in turn, he asks us to give ourselves to others, to live no longer for ourselves but for one another. In this way, we live “eucharistically”, pouring out upon the world the love we draw from the Lord’s flesh. The Eucharist is trans-lated into life when we pass beyond ourselves to those all around us … In Christ,

So we, though many, are one body in Christ. Romans 12:6

STEWARDSHIP WEEKLY REFLECTION

June 10, 2018 10th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.” - Mark 3:25

Do your parish ministries complement each other or do they compete against each other? Is your parish “one Body of Christ” or a bunch of little, separate ministries controlled by human ego? The goal of all parish minis-tries is to bring people to Christ. All of our parish work should be for the glory of God’s name, not our own name.

SOUP KITCHEN COLLECTION The monetary collection for the Soup Kitchen is this weekend. A basket for your donations is in the vestibule of the Church. Thank you for your generosity.

ARCHDIOCESAN RETIRED PRIEST COLLECTION

Next weekend our second collection is for the Retired Priests of the Archdiocese. Thank you for your generosity!

PROMISES

Today's liturgy is full of promises. The reading from Genesis promises a final triumph over the power of sin and a return to a new creation. The reading from Second Corinthians promises that all who follow Christ will have to struggle. It also promises, however, that we can perse-vere if we but recognize that Christ is within us, renew-ing us daily, and giving us the courage and the strength we need to endure. The Gospel promises that doing God's will makes us "family" with Jesus, who forgives all sin and triumphs over evil. Today might be a good day for us to make some promis-es as well. We can promise to stop kidding ourselves about our own tendencies to selfishness and sin. We can promise ourselves to believe--really believe--that while we are not sinless, we are forgiven. We can promise our-selves to combat evil and sin by acting as sisters and brothers not only to the Lord, but to one another as well.

See You in the Eucharist… No, Really. An excerpt from a LifeTeen Blog post by Faith Noah https://lifeteen.com/blog/see-you-in-the-eucharist-

no-really/

“See you in the Eucharist.” It’s a simple reminder to us of the transcendence of the Eucharist—the power the Mass has to unite us. Only there, before the Eucharist, do we come together as one Church. Not one parish, or one diocese even, but one eternal, universal, and united Church.

The Eucharist brings us intimately close to each other, in such a way that cannot be experienced more fully until we reach heaven. Why is that? Well, Mass—the Celebra-tion of the Eucharist—is heaven touching earth like an un-foreseen kiss (or a sloppy wet kiss, if you’re one of those people). Each time we participate in Mass, we enter into a mystery that has been celebrated since Christianity’s gene-sis. We remember a God who has existed since the begin-ning of time. And we prepare our hearts for a paradise that will persist with no end.

And perhaps the most mind-blowing part of the Eucha-rist…you see Jesus. You see Him more clearly than you can ever hope to do through Scripture, each other, or even pray-er. Because the Mass is heaven on earth, it is a preview of how clearly we will see Christ once we pass from this life.

“I will not leave you as orphans,” He tells us. “I will come to you. After a little while the world will no longer see Me, but you will see Me; because I live, you will live also. In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you” (John 14:18-20).

From Katie Two years ago I was joyfully welcomed to Guardian

Angel as the Coordinator of Youth Ministry. At my first parish carnival experience I enjoyed delicious sausage and peppers and won a stuffed animal! Tuesday nights quickly filled with discussion on the Holy Spirit. Wednesday nights brought pizza and laughter. The weekends saw retreats, time spent with Confirmation families and sponsors, and beautiful, holy Masses. God’s loving presence guided every early morning, every late night, and every second in between.

At the end of this month I will be leaving Guardian Angel to pursue other endeavors. Serving in this parish’s youth ministry has challenged me to grow personally, spiritually, and professionally in ways I never dreamed possible. I am forever grateful. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Thank you to the parish teenagers who allowed me to journey in faith with them. Thank you to each and every parishioner who prayed for this ministry, smiled at me, or read one of my many emails. Thank you to the wonderful staff and cler-gy who selflessly mentored me. Thank you to our Good and Gracious God through whom we live and move and have our being.

To all, see you in the Eucharist!

Peace and Blessings, Katie

A CATHOLIC PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE

Four lectures given by Msgr. Richard Liddy, Director of the Center for Catholic Studies at Seton Hall University. The lectures will take place on four Thursdays in the summer at 7 pm; June 14, June 28, July 5 and August 2 – and will take place at Stafford Hall at Seton Hall. (Park in the Parking Garage and walk a short distance to Stafford Hall). All of us live by some philosophy, whether we know it or not. These four lectures will present a Catholic vision of life inspired by the work of Bernard Lonergan, S. J. (1904–1984) and his writings on human consciousness. Lonergan was a Canadian Jesuit the-ologian whose works have had a worldwide influence. Partici-pants will be asked to identify the elements of a Catholic and catholic, that is, wholistic, vision in their own experiences. “The audience I envision for these lectures are the people getting off the train each day from New York City in South Orange and surrounding towns and involved in various professions - business, law, etc. - as well as ordinary folk open to such questions as: Who am I? What are we for? Is there a God? Is there ‘grace’ that heals and redeems us?” These lectures are open to all. Short readings will be provided for each lecture. For more information, email Msgr. Richard Liddy at [email protected]
